AIR question

Before I go and experiment I need to know the following.
If I have an fla with an animation which includes some as 3.0 done in CS5.5 and I re opened , changed the publishing to AIR for IOS and left the as file within the fla will this render correctly?
If not can I just cut the AS, remove , set a class and paste the AS inside the class and save then publish to AIR for IOS.
Will it work?
Reason I ask is I have some projects I want to combine into an app for IOS so rather than go thru the steps it would be easier to ask.
RD

Rendering on iOS - the same as on Desktop PC
You can write your App in CS5.5 as normal Flash Player application. Than simply change targeting ot Air for iOS, setup fiels needed and publish. It will work. Only one thing you must remember - in Flash Player on desktop you can load one swf into another and run AS for it. But on AIR for iOS you can't do this for security reasons.

  • Mid-2013 Macbook Air: question about the battery life

First of all, I'm sorry if these questions have been already asked, I've looked around and I've seen some answers, but none that fit my specific case.
I have had this computer since December (Macbook Air, 13'', Mid-2013), I've been using it for a month now. At the beginning, I used to use it until my battery was low (between 10 and 20%) and then charge it. Then I learnt that it's better to keep it plugged as much as possible (I have read this in other discussions and on the Apple page). The problem is that my battery is no longer a 100% of its capacity according to Cococnut Battery. It started with 99%, then back to 100%, then 98, 97... and now it varies from 97 to 98 (right now it says that my computer's current capacity is 6948 mAH). I don't know if this is normal, or if this is caused by the use I used to give to my macbook air at the beginning or by any other thing. I also have 19 loadcycles already. Besides, I have noticed that sometimes it jumps form 100% to 99% of battery pretty fast when I don't have it plugged, and I'm not sure if that happened before.
This is my first time dealing with a macbook and I don't know how these things are supposed to work, and I'm worried my battery might have any kind of problem and that's why itdoesn't have full capacity anymore, since I've been using it for only a month.
Also, sometimes it takes a little while to shut down. It usually takes 2 seconds, but sometimes it takes longer, maybe 20 seconds (first the screen turn white, then the loading icon appears and then it finally shuts down). Is this normal too for macbook airs?
    Thanks for the help!

Those are only averages, for purposes of the battery 97 98 99 and 100 are the 'same thing'........theyre all estimates.
Normal on shut down, sometimes you can see a few seconds, sometimes 10, 15 seconds shut down.....depends on what and HOW much its shutting down before poweroff.   Normal.
    ON BATTERY USE:
Keep it plugged in when near a socket so you keep the charging cycles down on your LiPo (lithium polymer) cells / battery, but not plugged in all the time. When not being used for several hours, turn it off.
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
"Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time."
General rule to remember of Lithium batteries is:
Never drain them LOW  & dont always/often store them HIGH
While cycle count is commonly seen to be the “miles” on your Lithium Ion pack cell in your Macbook, which they are, this distinction is not a fine line at all, and it is a big misconception to “count charge cycles”
*A person who has, for example, 300 charge cycles on their battery and is recharging at say 50-60% remaining of a 100% charge has better battery usage and care than another person who has 300 charge cycles at say 15% remaining on a 100% charge.
DoD (depth of discharge) is far more important on the wear and tear on your Macbook battery than any mere charge cycle count.  *There is no set “mile” or wear from a charge cycle in general OR in specific.    As such, contrary to popular conception, counting cycles is not conclusive whatsoever, rather the amount of deep DoD on an averaged scale of its use and charging conditions.
(as a very rough analogy would be 20,000 hard miles put on a car vs. 80,000 good miles being something similar)
*Contrary to some myths out there, there is protection circuitry in your Macbook and therefore you cannot overcharge it when plugged in and already fully charged
*However if you don’t plan on using it for a few hours, turn it OFF (plugged in or otherwise) ..*You don’t want your Macbook both always plugged in AND in sleep mode       (When portable devices are charging and in the on or sleep position, the current that is drawn through the device is called the parasitic load and will alter the dynamics of charge cycle. Battery manufacturers advise against parasitic loading because it induces mini-cycles.)
Keeping batteries connected to a charger ensures that periodic "top-ups" do very minor but continuous damage to individual cells, hence Apples recommendation above:   “Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time”, …this is because “Li-ion degrades fastest at high state-of-charge”.
This is also the same reason new Apple notebooks are packaged with 50% charges and not 100%.
LiPo (lithium polymer, same as in your Macbook) batteries do not need conditioning. However...
A lot of battery experts call the use of Lithium cells the "80% Rule" ...meaning use 80% of the charge or so, then recharge them for longer overall life.
Never let your Macbook go into shutdown and safe mode from loss of power, you can corrupt files that way, and the batteries do not like it.
The only quantified abuse seen to Lithium cells are instances when often the cells are repeatedly drained very low…. key word being "often"
Contrary to what some might say, Lithium batteries have an "ideal" break in period. First ten cycles or so, don't discharge down past 40% of the battery's capacity. Same way you don’t take a new car out and speed and rev the engine hard first 100 or so miles.
Proper treatment is still important. Just because LiPo batteries don’t need conditioning in general, does NOT mean they dont have an ideal use / recharge environment. Anything can be abused even if it doesn’t need conditioning.
    From Apple on batteries:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/
    Storing your MacBook
If you are going to store your MacBook away for an extended period of time, keep it in a cool location (room temperature roughly 22° C or about 72° F). Make certain you have at least a 50% charge on the internal battery of your Macbook if you plan on storing it away for a few months; recharge your battery to 50% or so every six months roughly if being stored away. If you live in a humid environment, keep your Macbook stored in its zippered case to prevent infiltration of humidity on the internals of your Macbook which could lead to corrosion.
    Considerations:
Your battery is subject to chemical aging even if not in use. A Lithium battery is aging as soon as its made, regardless.
In a perfect (although impractical) situation, your lithium battery is best idealized swinging back and forth between 20 and 85% SOC (state of charge) roughly.
Further still how you discharge the battery is far more important than how it is either charged or stored short term, and more important long term that cycle counts.
Ultimately counting charge cycles is of little importance.  Abuse in discharging (foremost), charging, and storing the battery and how it affects battery chemistry is important and not the ‘odometer’ reading, or cycle counts on the battery.
Everything boils down to battery chemistry long term, and not an arbitrary number, or cycle count.
Keep your macbook plugged in when near a socket since in the near end of long-term life, this is beneficial to the battery.
    Peace

  • Ipad air question

i have an ipad air. very , very impressed. my wife has a samsung which is a great little machine, however... apple is not an orange... question- my ipad heats up , like the underside of some laptops ,  what do you think?

Depends on how hot it is getting, but yes, like and laptop of similar device, certain functions do cause the process to work harder resulting in addition heat (streaming videos, for example). iOS devices also do not have fans. Some case designs will exacerbate this. Uless it is getting to hot to handle, this is normal.

  • Buying First Generation Air-Question of Heat and Performance

Do the first generation AIrs handle simple video watching OK and is watching video choppy? Also are the fans very noisy during simple and normal operations like word-processing or internet surfing, or do these machines easily overheat?
    thanks

    Hey all,
I own a first gen MBA for about 3 months now. It is a highly durable machine and has never let me down. I do all kinds of stuff, from office applications to video editing and even 3d rendering using 3dsmax in a virtualbox running XP on the MBA. I take it almost everywhere I go.
My experience with heat is, that the most important thing is to keep the vents on the bottom clear. All my slowdowns and heat related issues came when these vents where blocked. I can hook the MBA up to my 1280x720 projector and watch a movie or two without slow down-issues. I put it on the floor and the vents are clear. Temp and fans go up, but no kind of performance problems. If you put it on carpet or on your bed, the problems begin, as than the ventilation gets blocked.
But, to answer the threadstarters question: performancewise you can do anything on the MBA as you would expect to do on any other Core 2 Duo-CPU. It has two cores, afterall. Problems is: if you cut the airflow to it, one of the cores is shut down.

  • 2 AIR Questions: Launching applications and Viewing PDFs...

I am thinking of purchasing Adobe Flex Builder 3 and planning to have the app run on multiple platforms.
    I have three major questions:
    1. In an AIR program, how do I go about opening/accessing Word documents and/or PDF files (whether by launching Acrobat Reader/Microsoft Word or opening it in AIR)?
    2. Is it true that an AIR application can not execute other applications? If so, do I need to add a plug-in for that (ie: Shu)?

  • New MacBook Air: questions about how to network (AirPlay, Time Capsule, Apple TV, etc)

    Hi guys,
I am the new owner of a MacBook Air 13" and I've decided to upgrade my home network. Can one of you please help me identify the additional products I need to purchase in order to achieve my desired goals?
Here is what I want to do:
    * I want to have a large, local, networked hard disk where I can store thousands of photos (iPhoto library) - looks like time capsule or possibly Airport Extreme would be good here
    * I want to access this iPhoto library from my MBA, MBP, and iPad 2. The photos will not be stored locally on any of these devices. Is this possible, and would I experience significant slowness due to this setup? Basically i want a local cloud with massive storage.
    * I could also be tempted to store my iPhoto library in Dropbox but I wonder if the laptops etc would support this? Also this much storage could get pricey.
    * I would like to stream music from services like Pandora and Spotify to my home theater system, which has all kinds of optical / coponent connections (Denon receiver). Ideally I'd like to do this from any of my devices including iPad and even iPhone. I do not use iTunes.
    * I would like to stream content from my devices to my TV including photos and videos, as well as basic mirroring functionality. Given I currently stream Netflix etc through Xbox this is the least important of all my desires. My tv has things like hdmi connections.
So guys do you think I can do this? Particularly the iPhoto part. Im really looking for a seamless experience in accessing my photos from any laptop.
Any tips on exactly what products I need to buy would be greatly appreciated.

    Pappasbike, welcome to the discussions!
"Now my confusion comes from reading about setting the TC in bridge mode."
"The TC is only a foot or two way from the AEBS"
Last item first....if the TC is this close, it might make more sense to connect the two devices together with an ethernet cable. (Always use ethernet connections when possible for faster speeds and more reliable connections.) You would connect one end of the ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports on the Extreme and the other to the WAN port on the Time Capsule.
Bridge Mode....You only want one router doing DHCP and NAT and that is being done by the Extreme according to your post. Since the Time Capsule is also a router, you would want to configure it in Bridge Mode so that you will avoid IP conflicts and double NAT errors on your network. Do this as follows:
Open Airport Utility and click on Manual Setup for the Time Capsule.
Click on the Internet icon at the top of the pane.
Now look for the "Connection Sharing" setting near the bottom of the pane. Select "Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update to save your new settings.

  • Javascript in adobe air question...

I have a VERY simple javascript password script that just
takes the password from a form and compares it... if password is
correct is redirects to correct html file. I know the script is
poorly written, but it does what I need for the time being.
    if (form.pass.value=="password") {
    window.location="page2.html"
    } else {
    alert("Invalid Password")
Although the script works, I can't seem to get it to redirect
to the page2.html when the correct password is entered. If I
replace the window.location with an alert it works so I know the
rest of the code is working fine.
Is there something I need to do in order to get
window.location to work in an adobe air app? or is there an
alternative that works? If there's an alternative, can you post
    example code?
    Thanks,
    Shannon

    I think you want window.location.href = "page2.html"
When testing your code in a browser to see if it works, use
WebKit or, if you're on a Mac,
Safari. These use the same engine as AIR. Testing on IE only tells
you that it's bug-compatible with IE, which isn't very helpful. You
can also try Google Chrome, which uses the same HTML rendering
engine as AIR, but not the same JS interpreter, so there can still
    be differences in behavior.
I don't want to oversell this technique. AIR does have known
differences with respect to the WebKit engine as used in standalone
browsers, usually for security reasons. Still, if you find your
code doesn't work in AIR, does work in IE or Firefox, but fails in
WebKit or Safari, you know it's your code that's broken, not some
    limitation in AIR.

  • Milkmangames extension for AIR question AdMob question

First of all, I apologize for puting the post here, I didn't manage to get any reply from them so I figure they must be too busy.
Maybe someone here who used their AdMob extension could be kind enough help me here:
I am using their AdMob extension for iOS and Android and I come across this issue.
I have two scenes [in Flash] that uses the AdMob extension, an invisible Sprite in each scene is in charge of initialzing & destroying the Ad [AdMob.destroyAd()] and will initialize it again on the next scene.
However, after it has been destroyed and re-initialized in the next scene, I get an error from your extension saying it has already been initialized and the ad area turns blank.
Can I assume that internally, when AdMob.destroyAd() is called, they close it some time later instead of immediately ?
How do I fix this issue on my end ?

    var admob:Admob=Admob.getInstance();//create a instance
    admob.setKeys("a152834c2b8cce6");//set admob appid

    1) You can turn your Photoshop design to Adobe Air application the same way as Flash appl. Adobe Air just extending Flash as external, multiplatform and standalone application with a rich abilities.
    2) Don't understand you. But read step 1 - you can animate everything like in Flash

  • New iPad Air Questions

Once upon a time I had an iPad 2, and it was good. Yesterday I got an iPad Air. Was there supposed to be a manual anywhere? I did download it from Apple, but shouldn't it be on the device?
Is iCloud the preferred way to transfer data these days? I find iCloud annoying. I don't need everything on my iMac, iPhone and iPad. I want to select what is on each one.
Does Air Drop work between an iMac and the iPad Air? If not, why the **** not?
Does connecting the iPad Air to an iMac do anything at all? The iPad Air didn't appear on the desktop. Can I not transfer stuff via USB?
Thanks for any answers you might have.

AirDrop does not yet work between a Mac and an iPad/iPhone.  I suppose that they will add some of that functionality soon, but AirDrop on Macs currently functions quite a bit differently than it does on a Mac, so there's not a one-to-one correlation.
If you connect your iPad to your Mac, it should automatically pull up iTunes.  This is where you'll find the interface to interact with your device.  There will be a new tab/button in iTunes that lets you examine what's on your iPad, back it up, and even transfer some document-type files.  Ordinarily, though, there is no real reason to transfer anything via this method.  Your contacts, notes, calendars, etc., however, should already have synced up if you have activated iCloud.  And if you choose to use iCloud for iWork documents and whatnot, then they are automatically synced as well.  I'm not sure why you're unhappy with iCloud.  I find it to be a simple and unobtrusive way to never have to worry about what device or computer I am using.  All my stuff is just automatically everyhwere.  But if you don't like that, you can choose to save things to the Mac hard drive only, and you can turn off document syncing in your iCloud settings on your iPad.

  • Game rendering and memory optimization in AIR for Android

I am coding an engine for android that uses the fastest methods so I can rapidly make android and iphone (if possible) games.
    1) using GPU rendering, are the bitmapData functions like copyPixels accelerated?
in other words is it faster to use only copyPixels to render all my game objects to one bitmap or use separate sprites?
    2) this is a general air question, if I want to clear memory used, like for example when moving to a new stage and I want to delete those bitmaps that been used on the previous stage.
is there a function to force them to be removed from memory, or should I just remove all the references?
also if I remove all the references from an object it will be deleted if it's listening for events from another object?
    Thanks.

    1. Various forum posts and articles I've seen suggest a blitting approach like copying bitmaps together gives roughly the same performance results as separate sprites with GPU rendering.
Might be a good idea to setup a processor intensive game scenario and try each for comparison? I'l be interested in hearing how you get on.
TBH I haven't tried the copyPixels approach yet, so i'll be playing around with it myself soon.
    2. Yes, removing references is the way to get objects garbage collected. There are ways to force garbage collection, but they are hacky. Definitely not good practice.
And yes make sure you remove the event listeners because as you suspect, they will keep the objects alive.
There is an argument called 'use weak reference' which you can set to true when you add the event listener. This is intended to prevent them keeping objects alive, but I have seen situations where it doesn't work properly.
