Airdrop file sharing - what about ethernet?   How strange.

Overall I like Lion, but sometimes I wonder what Apple is thinking.  You have a file sharing app for your LAN, but then any wired computer is excluded?  You have Macs on the same LAN, why not allow Airdrop to work over the wired connection?
I suppose you would have to change the name.  Seems silly to have to leave the wireless receiver on with an ethernet connected Mac just to do Airdrop.
But really, other than that oddity, I like Lion.

Hi-
A suggestion as a possible simpler alternative-
The standard method of file sharing is structured so as to protect your system and your privacy by limiting the access and privileges of remote users. However in your particular situation, there is only one person - yourself- who already owns and controls both Macs, and so there is no privacy/security issue raised by granting full control to yourself when logged in remotely.
You might therefore therefore try it this way:
Enable File Sharing on both Macs. You shouldn't need to designate particular additional folders.
From the iMac: when you connect remotely to the MBP, enter  the username and password of the user account that is on the MBP, not your current iMac username and password.
You should then be effectively logged in as the MBP user, not the iMac user. You should be able to navigate to the place on the MBP where you want to save things, presumably within the Home folder of the logged-in MBP account. If the MBP account is an admin account, you could navigate to the Shared folder as well. The files that you save should end up being owned by the MBP user account, and therefore should remain editable once you are physically back at the MBP.
Likewise if you want to share files that are on the iMac, then when you are sitting at the MBP, connect by entering the username and password of the user account on the iMac.

    Wireless/airdrop/file sharing problems
I operate an IMac 3.06GHz and an Airbook 1.4 GHz
I frequently need to transfer files between the two, and in OSX 10.6, did so by setting the iMac to share the wireless connection and using drop box
This no longer functions in Lion (1.7.1).
    Symptoms are:
    1. Air drop simply does not function. Neither computer recognizes the other, even if they are adjacent.
    2. The Airbook will recognize the wireless connection, and is able to connect with some programs, but not all.
    3. For example, Safari is able to load news sites, but not gmail and a google search freezes, although a Bing search for the succeeds.
    4. Turning both Firewalls off has no effect
    5. Restarting both computers with new settings has no effect
    6. Neither machine shows in the sidebar of finder, therefore I am unable to access one from the other directly.
Any ideas or back to Snow Leopard?

  • XP pro file sharing and guest password - how to enable guest password?

    Hi,
I want to share files between two Windows XP pro computers. I would also like that these shares can only be accessed with a password.
Here's a description of my setup:
I have two laptops: over 1 yo Fujitsu-Siemens (FS) running on Windows XP pro (finnish) and a brand new Thinkpad T61 (TP) running on Windows XP pro (english). Both of theses computers have guest account enabled and these accounts have also been password protected. FS's guest account is called "vieras" because of the language settings and TP's guest account is of course just "guest". Guest account passwords have been enabled using "net user <user name> *".
I've disabled simple file sharing on both computers, set shared folder permission to only contain these users: TP - "Guest (TP\Guest)" and FS - "Vieras (FS\Vieras)". Both computers have F-secure on them so I've made firewall rules which enable following services both ways to a specific IP: Ping / ICMP echo request and reply ; Windows file sharing and network printers ; Windows network browsing ; ICMP / Internet Control Message Protocol. I've also enabled these services on Windows firewall.
These computers can connect to each other either via Wi-Fi access point (b-mode) or directly using an ad-hoc Wi-Fi configuration (g-mode). Obviously the latter is used for more bandwidth hungry file transfers. Also, sometimes a cross-over Ethernet cable is used as well for even faster file transfers.
Everything on my setup works just fine except just one thing. I connect to a shared resource by running the computer's IP address. When I connect from TP to FS it prompts for username and password. FS accepts both english and finnish names for  the guest account provided that the password is correct. But here's the problem... When connecting from FS to TP _no password or username prompt appears_. If I browse TP's shared folder sessions (under My Computer -> manage) I can see that FS is logged on as "vieras" i.e. FS's guest account.
Since I enabled FS's network shares over a year a go I can't remember everything I did to make it work. Every relevant configuration on TP and FS seem to be identical (e.g. "Security settings -> local policies -> security options -> Accounts: limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only -> enabled") but still TP accepts connections without password prompt.
I've tried to get TP's password prompts enabled for a while now without any success. I did a lot of searching on the subject but I could only find instructions on how to disable guest account password prompts for network shares.
Has anyone had similar experiences or does anyone know what I should try out next? Thanks...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Success!
I solved my problem by changing guest account passwords. I tried to keep things simple by using the same guest password on both computers. This however allowed FS to log on to TP without guest password for some unknown reason. My logic would tell me that having the same guest password would allow both computers to log in without password but this wasn't obviously the case. I guess Windows has its own logic that I can't figure out or this issue had something to do with different language setups. Anyhow my shares work now like I want them to work.

When I purchased my Mac six months ago, I transferred my Quicken files to Quicken Essentials.  That worked fine until yesterday.  Now I'm getting messages that there is not application to open the files, or that it just plain can't open the file.  What gives here?  What happened?  How can I get back in?

Launch the Quicken application and try to open the file from there, if you haven't already. If that fails, and a simple restart of the computer doesn't help, try reinstalling the application. If that doesn't cure the problem, I would suggest you take this up in the Quicken Community:

    or with Quicken support:

You'll be most likely to get further help with your issue there.

  • Network file sharing not working anymore - how do I reinstall samba?

First off, I should say that I’m a PC guy who’s trying to get used to his Mac and figure out how to make it do what he wants.
So I’ve been having lots of trouble with my Mac mini. I got it this past summer and had various problems. I’d thought I’d gotten them all sorted out until this latest issue.
Here’s a quick summary of what I want to end up with: the Mac mini is supposed to be my TV computer. I have 4 external hard drives connected to it. I need to be able to access and fully manipulate the external drives over the network from a PC.
Enabling the basic samba sharing was easy. I got that working beautifully, but I was only able to access my home directory, not the external hard drives. After investigating on the Internet, it seems that I learned just enough to screw everything up.
I found out that I needed to “just” edit my smb.conf file, but I couldn’t figure out how to find it. It seems I can only get to it via Terminal or something. So I looked for alternatives.
I found a guide on Mac sharing beyond the home directory (http://www.creativemac.com/2002/10_oct/tutorials/samba021007.htm) and installed the Samba Sharing preference pane (http://xamba.sourceforge.net/ssp/index.shtml). This gave me a preference pane with both a GUI and a text editor for the smb.conf file. Seemed like a dream come true. I was even able to specify all the shares I wanted. It seemed simply and easy.
I did run into some trouble when I installed it. I got a bunch of error messages about files not being in their default location or how files needed to be updated. I thought that I had fixed all that, though I couldn’t fix the message about how files needed to be updated.
The problem is that whenever I clicked on “Start”, the entire thing crashes. Further, not samha sharing doesn’t work at all anymore. I’ve tried using the built-in samba sharing that used to work fine, but that does nothing.
I’ve tried removing every trace I can fine of the Samba Sharing preference pane I installed, but that hasn’t changed anything either. When I reinstall it, all my old settings are still there, so there must be some files saved somewhere, but I can’t find them.
I also tried installing Sharepoints (http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/), but that didn’t change anything either.
Currently, I can’t access the Mac from any PC. I can ping the Mac’s IP fine, but I can’t browse to it on the network nor can I go directly to it. I’m not even prompted to sign in, I just get a message that it’s not valid and I should check the address.
On the Mac, I can access the PC that’s on the same workgroup as it, but I can’t access any other workgroups (which I used to be able to do).
So… what do I do now? I can’t figure out how to reset everything and start over. Right now, I’d be happy with that. Then I can try dealing with the external shares again (and more carefully this time).

  • Guest Network really secure? What about Ethernet?

Quick question - I haven't find any similar topics in the forum.
I have set up a Guest network on my Apple Time Capsule. Everything great, isolated VLAN I get the point. What if the "guest" connects directly to the Capsule via Ethernet /RJ45 ?
    >> What are the risks, and what kind of resources he may have now access to ? I don't want to take the risks of personal data on the Capsule to be accessible through Ethernet.
Thank you for your help --AA

What if the "guest" connects directly to the Capsule via Ethernet /RJ45 ?
Then the "guest" will be on the "main" or "private" network, and the "guest" will be able to "see" other devices on the main network.
Whether or not the guest will be able to to actually connect to any other devices to access data will depend on whether he has the correct log on credentials for any given device.

  • File sharing works great - now how do I get printer sharing working?

    Hello everyone.
This is my first post so please bear with me. I've been searching the archives for a similar problem but couldn't find anything that helps.
I have a MacBook running OS X 10.4.11 and an HP running Windows Vista Home Premium. This past week I've got my home network up and running via a wireless router, and now I can access the Mac from my HP, and I can access the HP's public folder from my Mac. Hooray.
Now I would like to be able to print wirelessly from my Mac to a printer that is connected to the HP.
The printer in question is a Canon PIXMA ip4500. It is installed on both machines and works fine when connected to either by USB. Printer sharing is turned on on the HP, and also this specific printer is shared if you look at the properties box in Vista.
On my mac, I open the Print & Fax box from System Preferences, then Add Printer > More Printers... I have set the first box to Windows Printing and the second box to Workgroup, and this brings up two items:
Ridlingtonspa (this is the name for my HP)
Sarah-Allmans-C (a truncated form of the name of the Mac)
I thought the correct thing to do here would be to choose Ridlingtonspa to bring up the printer on that machine, but when I do that I am prompted with a dialogue box:
Connect to the printer "Ridlingtonspa" as:
    Name:
    Password:
This is a little confusing as the printer doesn't have a username and password as far as I am aware. Also, as I say, that's the name of the HP not the printer. Anyway, I have tried my login details for the HP and that doesn't work. I have also tried the login details for the Mac and that doesn't work. Each time I get the message:
Unable to connect to server with the provided password and user name.
    Error 256
Does anyone have any ideas? This is really frustrating!
Many thanks in advance for your help.
    Rhyd

  • Does lightbox just enlarge the image of the original file? What about image resolution?

I'm in the process of buying cs5 (only have 3 which DW lightbox plugin doesn't support).  I'm interested in it based on all I've read on this forum.  It appears you don't have to have 2 images (one small one big) like you have to with a disjointed rollover, so how does it enlarge the image without losing a lot of resolution? Hope it's OK to ask a lightbox question here.

  • When I attempt to download the lastest OS iPhone update to iTunes, the file is too large for my internet carrier will allow.  My max is 400 MB and the file is what about 583 MB?  Options?  The same is true for the iTunes updates.

When I attempt to download the lastest version of the iphone 4 OS update or the itunes one for the desktop, the file is too large for my internet carrier.  It will allow only a 400 MB download versus the download size of 583 MB.  Suggestions?

You can download on your work computer, then place the file on your desktop of your home computer, if you want. Then:
    Launch iTunes
Option+Click (Mac OS X) or Shift+Click (Windows) the Update button
Select the IPSW update file you just placed on your desktop
Let iTunes update your hardware to the latest version
The .ipsw file is located here:
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
    Windows Vista & Windows 7: \Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
You will have to turn on "Show All Hidden Files & Folders" to see it.

How do I copy FOLDERS to or from my iPad/iPhone/iPod touch using iTunes File Sharing?
I know how to copy files to or from using iTunes file sharing but it doesnt seem to allow copying of folders

From your PC or Mac, you can copy a folder (and it's contents) into the DropBox folder. It will then sync ans will be available in your DropBox app on the iPad.
GoodReader includes built in connectivity to DropBox, will pick up the contents and then allow you to easily copy files to other folders within it, as well as open files in other apps on your iPad.

  • File sharing question

I have been trying to set up file sharing so i can access my files on my g5 desktop, with my macboook.
I store my movies on my desktop (G5) and am planing to just run a cable to my living room since i have set my macbook to play movies on my TV. what is the best way to set this up, i have tryed doing it wireless and it just laggs and is a hassle to try to log in. so i bought a crossover ethernet cable but realized i only have one input on the back of my G5 and that is being used by my internet.
so what is the easiest painless way to set up file sharing in my preferences.
is their another cable i can transfer files through other then a ethernet maybe a usb, or firewire?
how would you go about simplifying you file transfers?
and can i set up my front row to recognize files shared from desktop, on my macbook?
    thanks for your feedback.

    hey thanks for your reply.
i think im going to attempt using a router and all the existing ethernet cables i have.
but once i have set up file sharing in system preferences, how do I access it? the other computer shows up in my finder menu but it never actually connects, it just says connecting......
even when i hit connect as it does nothing.

  • File sharing in 10.4.8 server

hi i posted this in the macbook forum and they told me to come here...
i'm running os 10.4.8 server (not regular) and i can't figure out how to turn on file sharing. i know how to turn it on n 10.4.8 but not the server version. when i go to system preferances > sharing there was no personal file sharing. does anyon know how to turn it on?

You should use workgroup manager and serveradmin to configure most services on your server. More specifically, use serveradmin to turn on/off services and workgroup manager to , well, manage them.
Here's a great place to start.

  • File Sharing with AirPort or Ethernet - Both connected, what happens?

Here's the scenario. Two Macs are connected using AirPort to the local wireless network, with an AirPort Extreme Base Station as the router. The two Macs are also connected directly, to each other, using an Ethernet cable.
One Mac is set up to do +File Sharing+ (to be the file server). On the (other) "client" Mac, I want to connect to the "file server" Mac using the direct Ethernet connection (because it is much faster than even 802.11n wireless). For all other networking, including Internet access, I want both Macs to use the AirPort connection. Use Ethernet connection only for file sharing between the two Macs.
*Is there some way to force file sharing to use the Ethernet connection* (not AirPort), when both are available and connected?
I don't want to be too long-winded about what I have tried, but here is want I have observed. If I go to System Preferences Network pane and +Set Service Order+ (under the gear icon) so that AirPort appears first, both Internet access and file sharing use AirPort. If I set it so that Ethernet appears first in the sidebar, file sharing uses Ethernet and Internet access does not work (unless I also enable +Internet Sharing+ on file server Mac). If I switch the service order back to AirPort being first, Internet access goes back to using AirPort, but if I leave the file sharing over Ethernet connected, it continues to work over Ethernet (sometimes); it does not seem consistent. Sometimes it cuts off. Other times, the Internet access over AirPort become problematic.
Secondary question - *Is there some place I can look to see which connection is being used* at a particular moment, for file sharing?
The way I checked was by transferring a large folder and noting the estimated transfer time. A few hours is from AirPort being used; 20-30 minutes is Ethernet being used.
If it matters, the +file server+ Mac is a Power Mac G5 with Leopard and the client Mac is a Mac mini with Snow Leopard. I can make it happen, but the process is convoluted and it does not seem to work reliably or consistently, with either the file sharing or Internet access connection becoming inaccessible until I restart. I am willing to accept +UNIX command line magic+ as a solution; it just has to be a method that works consistently, and is understandable.

I don't understand what you just wrote. There is no category or forum in Apple Discussions that is generally about networking. There is a +Getting Online and Networking+ forum under Snow Leopard, and I suppose I could have posted it there. But if you have advice related to this topic question, I thinks it's OK for you to post a response in this topic, in this forum and category. If you don't know, that's fine. I don't know either. That's why I'm asking.
And this question is hardly +Networking 101+.

  • HT1549 How to do file sharing between OS X platforms without airport, airdrop, or router.

How do you do file sharing between OS X platforms without: airport, airdrop, a router, or existing intranet?

All Macs for many years have included Airport WiFi.  You should be able to create an Ad-Hoc network between any 2 Macs and transfer files via file sharing
The Airport icon on the menu bar -> Create Network on one Mac.  On the other Mac, choose -> Join Other network.
Besides a Firewire cable, you should also be able to connect an ethernet cable between any 2 Macs and they should see each other.
There is always a USB thumb drive and sneaker-net (hand carry files between systems via the Thumb Drive).
You could get a WiFi router, and use it to create a local network where all the Macs in the home could see each other.  That will work even if you do not have an internet connection.
You could get an ethernet switch and plug all the Macs into the switch via ethernet cables and they would all see each other.
