Airline adapter question

I have a MBP (w/85 watt power supply). I am flying to Japan in April and the Boeing 777 that American Airlines runs have power ports that supply 70 watts (according to their seat map, our seats have them right under us). Given that the adapter doesn't charge the battery, will this be enough? It would be awfully nice to have use of my mac for the whole trip.
TIA
Edwin

Hi Edwin,
I’m a little unclear about your post, since if you were actually able to use the 85 W power supply it would both run your MBP and charge your battery. However, your 85 W AC power adapter *will not work* on the plane. There are two reasons for this, depending on plane specifics, but the bottom line is the AC power brick won’t work.
There are multiple versions of the Boeing 777. Some 777s have DC power with cigarette lighter-style ports, the while other 777s have AC power with standard US plugs.
According to the AA specs at SeatGuru.com, their 777s are the ones with DC power. If that’s the case for your plane, obviously an AC adapter won’t work. In that case, you need the Apple MagSafe Airline Adapter. Your reference to “the adapter doesn’t charge the battery” suggests you may already have one of these (but FYI, it’s not 85 W). If so, you are fine, and *the MagSafe Airline Adapter will power your MBP for the whole flight*. I would recommend starting with a charged battery, just in case, but I have used the airline adapter on long flights with no difficulty.
Your MBP’s 85 W AC adapter won’t work on 777s with AC power either, but in this case it’s because the adapter draws too much power. In general, airplane power supplies 70-75 W (you state 70 W). With the AC adapter, the MBP will not ‘know’ it’s plugged into an airplane power port, so it will trip the circuit breaker on the seat power (unlike with the Airline Adapter). If your seat has AC power, you can use a 60 W MacBook +not Pro+ AC adapter. Another possibility is to use your 85 W adapter with the battery removed; some reports indicate this will not trip the circuit breaker, but be aware that Apple doesn’t recommend running on AC without the battery because of the risk of sudden hard shutdowns (if you accidentally pull the MagSafe out, or (in your case) when they shut off the seat power for landing, or some other random reason; also, running on AC power with no battery will cause the processor to throttle back to 1 GHz.
Hope this helps...and have a good trip!

  • Apple MagSafe Airline Adapter for MacBook and MacBook Pro

    Does the Apple MagSafe Airline Adapter for MacBook and MacBook Pro work in cars to in the cigerete lighter and how does it work on a airoplane cause in airoplanes there is only a mike connection thats about it ?

    This is an alternative solution that works great for me. I always carry a small and lightweight DC to AC converter with me in my case when I'm on the road. It's a Wagan Tech Smart AC 100 USB that I picked up at Costco for under 20 bucks. 100 watt capability and allows me to use all my electronics and chargers on the road. I can use it to charge the cellphone, laptop, ipod, etc.
    Even includes a USB port on the side for charging USB based products and also includes the aircraft adaptor (and of course a cigarette lighter adaptor) and everything fits into a small cloth bag (included).
    http://www.wagan.com/htmls/detail-2382.html
    The link is for the newer 120 watt version but it looks identical otherwise. If you don't have access to Costco then check the link provided for either direct purchase or the availability of other resellers. There's a "where to buy" tab at the top of the screen. Cheers!
    P.S. I just noticed that you are from the U.K. I'm sure this will still work as your MacBook charger should autoswitch down to 110v input, you'll just need to make sure you have the North American plug installed. If not, I'm sure there are similiar DC to AC adaptors available in the U.K. Hope that helps!

  • Airline adapter/ trucks

    so i got the airline adapter to use on a flight that i'm taking next week. but just curious. will this adapter work in the standard cigarette plug in my truck w/o frying anything or will i need a power inverter?

    I agree, problem is they have to buy the MacBook adapter and use that as a starting point. Starts adding to the cost right up front. Thanks for the .

  • Does an Airline Adapter Charge the MacBook?

    I had hoped to charge my MacBook in the car, but all I get is a green light and Calculating????

    No it is does not work in a car. From the sales pages.
    +Important notes:+
    +Using the MagSafe Airline Adapter provides power for your computer but does not charge the battery.+
    +The MagSafe Airline Adapter is not compatible with automobile power ports.+

  • Old MagSafe Airline Adapter not working with MacBook Pro Retina

    I've got an old MagSafe Airline Adapter (one I bought when it first came out) that I'm trying to use with my MacBook Pro Retina (using a MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter). Sometimes the light is green, sometimes it is off, sometimes the battery icon in the menu bar shows plugged in, sometimes not, but in any combination, the machine is not maintaining charge; the battery discharges at a normal rate for just being on battery. For giggles, I borrowed my seatmate's year-or-two-old MagSafe adapter (the one with the right-angle plug) and plugged it into my machine (also using the MagSafe to MagSafe 2 converter). The light on that one turns orange, and though the battery icon shows "Not Charging", the battery is maintaining charge with the newer adapter. (My adapter, BTW, is able to maintain the charge on her 13" MacBook Pro.)
    Was there a change to recent versions of this adapter to make the new ones work with the Retina MacBooks where the old one will not?

    the green light on the mag safe turns on?
    you should reduce your usage to a very minimal amount as I'm sure the airline doesn't output a strong enough signal for you to be running full screen films with high res. Maybe you should close your macbook P and see if it is charged after a little while of not using it.
    turn your screen lights down, turn the sound gHZ down, quit all the downloadin'.
    if you must run flash make sure you have the latest version (from the adobe site).
    You're computer is intense and if you use it more then it's gaining, of course it going to be draining .
    But this is probably moot since you're probably on said plane now. or was.
    I'd imagine if you're not satisfied with the product you should return it detailing your situation.

  • Magsafe airline adapter

    Does anyone know whether the Magsafe airline adapter (which has been reshaped to look like a MacBook Air Magsafe connection) will work with a MacBook Pro? In the Shibuya Apple shop, some staff said it would be fine but others said it's only for the MacBook Air.
    Do the Air and Pro draw different amounts of power? Is the Magsafe connection different? Help!

    MBP draws 85w
    MB draws 60w
    MBA draws 45w
    BIG difference. however this claims to work with them all:

  • External preview display via. Mini-DVI to video adapter QUESTION

    Hello, I have been browsing this forum for a while, and this is my first question.
    I have a Macbook Core2duo running Final Cut Pro. I purchased a Mini-DVI to S-video/composite video adapter.
    I cannot get my work to preview on this external monitor. I would like to view the canvas on the monitor while working. I had this setup at school on a G5, but I cannot get it to work on my macbook. The only way apple suggests doing this is by setting up a camera via. firewire and then run from the camera to the NTSC video display (television). I would just like to do it via. mini-dvi to my television for previewing.
    Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you,
    Morgan Bressler

    From what I've been told, using the computer's video output isn't outputting a true NTSC picture. I was told when talking about how the Macbook Pros dropped the S-vdieo port that I shouldn't use that anyways, but rather to go the firewire route. THat was actually converts the video source to true NTSC instead of taking a computer output to a TV. While I have no doubt that it works, I'm willing to bet that you'll see a noticeable difference between the G5 S-video and your MB using firewire. Most consumer camcorders from the past several years do digital (firewire) to analogue (NTSC) conversion, so you probably don't even need a new box.

  • DVI to ADC Adapter question

    I've got a Quicksilver 933 (2002) and want to get the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro PC & Mac Video Card. I have a 17" Apple Cinema Display and want to add the new 20" Apple Display for an extended desktop. The ATI card has 2 DVI outs. I will need a DVI to ADC adapter. My question is, the adapters (see below) say they are good for connecting to DVI-D out and the 9600 card is DVI-I. Does this make a difference? Does anyone out there have experience running a set-up like this? I would hate to spend $200. on this card and $80. on the adapter only to find out I couldn't use the 17" Display.
    My other choice is the 64MB ATI 9000 Pro Mac edition. (This has both a DVI out and an ADC out so I would save ~$200.) I will not be doing any gameing, just extended desktop work with Photoshop, Flash and Dreamweaver. Would there be any noticeable difference between the 9000 and 9600 in these activities? As always, thanks for your input.
    AddLogix DVI - ADC Video Adapter
    Addlogix's DVI-D to ADC adapter allows Apple ADC LCD monitors to be connected to virtually any DVI computer systems and retain the USB hub feature as well.  The adapter combines the DVI and the USB signals from your computer and provides DC Power to the Apple Display.

    Hi Justin,
    Can I further the questioning instead of starting my
    own new thread?
    No, worries, Mate!
    I am in a similar situation.
    I have a 2003 Quicksilver 933 with dual display
    currently running.
    (Using a 17" Apple Display & a 17" Sony CRT).
    I eventually wish to either upgrade to a 20+ cinema
    display and use the 17" Apple display as my extended
    desktop, but that may still be down the road a bit.
    Until then, Im looking to ditch the CRT for a 15 (or
    so) LCD to dave on desktop space and make an attempt
    to match the 17'' Apple Display.
    Ok, on to the question.
    I purchased a ATI Raedon 9800Pro Mac Edition and then
    noticed it only have two DVI connections. This won't
    be a problem for the eventual LCD upgrade (which has
    DVI connection), but I need to purchase a DVI to ADC
    convertor for the 17" Apple display.
    The Radeon 9800 has DVI and VGA and S-Video output, I believe. If you want to run 2 LCD monitors, one of them will have to have a VGA input (which you can't get on Apple monitors).
    1) Can I expect any loss in quality/performace due to
    the conversion between DVI and ADC?
    No, if the adaptor funcftions properly, there is no loss from DVI to ADC.
    2) I believe there are mulitple brands out there
    doing this conversion. (Apple, Geffen, etc..) Any
    brand looking to be more preferred over the other?
    The Geffen adaptor is presently the only one which will support the 17" ADC CRT studio monitor (as well as the ADC LCD monitors).
    3) With the convertor will I still be able to power
    my mac on and off with the use of the display power
    button?
    You can power the Mac on, however, some adaptors don't allow you to power it off.
    Thanks for any help.
    Justin
    Cheers!

  • DVI to ADC adapter questions ...

    I just purchased a Mac Mini and decided to use my existing (and well loved) Apple display monitor. I read up on what I needed to make this happen. Purchased a used DVI to ADV adapter. The plan was to put the adapter on a switchable power strip and power down the adapter when not in use. The adapter doesn't seem to like that. I have to restart the Mac Mini a couple times in order for the monitor to boot up.
    My question is ... Does the power need to remain ON constantly on the DVI to ADV adapter in order for the monitor to fire up the first time? OR am I having issues with the used adapter?
    I appreciate the info and suggestions!
    Mike

    I believe I have figured out the solution!
    It's the order the items are activated.
    FIRST I start the Mac Mini ... than I turn the power strip ON for the adapter.
    It seems to have fixed the issue!

  • HT2792 Just purchased from an airport store the MagSafe Airline Adapter so I could use my MacBook Air on a long haul flight. But, the airline adapter plug doesn't fit the socket. Am I missing something?

    I purchased at the airport last week before a long haul flight the MagSafe Airline Adappter so I couod keep working on the MacBook Air without fear of the battery running out before I had completed the necessary work. The shop assistant assured me the kit worked on all planes but......the socket on the flight, both outbound and inbound, was the normal female 2 pin/3 pin socket that I used to use for my old thinkPad. What am I doing wrong? Am I missing something obvious here
    Thanks for any help you can offer.
    Geoff

    Hi CaptFred,
    Thanks for taking the time to respond. I understand your point and have indeed separated them. Since sending the message I have visited the Apple Store to check the picture of the accessory in case I was missing something and I wonder if I am missing the 20mm adapter but, over and above that, I just dont see the right size/shape empower port socket in the plane seat, only the traditional 3 pin/2 pin sockets. I wonder if the salesman was selling me a pig in the poke because the Apple Store also says that it fits some commercial airlines whereas the salesman told me it worked in all flights. I suspect I will need to go to the airline companies direct to see which planes have this particualr Empower port. In the meantime I am tempted to ask for my money back. Geoff

  • Mail adapter question

    I have a question regarding the mail adapter scenario.  Firstly data goes to ECC and some validations are performed and if there are any errors, ECC will provide me with some indicator saying this record has errors.
    Now, the same structures are used in the opposite direction and I have to count the number of error records based of that and send that info as an email. If I created a UDF to count the number of error records, how do I put that information in the email ?
    Is there anyway, I can capture that info in the mail adapter ?
    Any useful links will be appreciated.

    being from a Java background is that every method/function declaration is supposed to have the return type and I was told that behind the scenes Java is being run which is why I assumed that thats a return type.Again,  I am fairly new and I am in the process of learning things.
    For simple UDF (cache = Value), returns string.
    For advanced UDF (Cache = Context or Queue), returns array of strings.
    The problem is I did not understand the use of ResultList class in this case.

    use queue execution types but I am a little bit confused as to the usage of that.
    Because of u201Cqueueu201D function, the arguments that we define automatically become arrays, because PI is assuming that we want to operate on multiple input values with this function. That's the reason you are able to traverse through each and every value of the field "ecode".
    Any useful example would be appreciated.

  • JDBC adapter questions

    Hello all,
    I have been playing around with the JDBC adapter on my XI sandbox to figure it out.  I read through a few guides and I almost have a good handle on it, but there is still a big question lingering.  I have configured an example scenario in which I would like to pull data out of the USR01 table from the XI database and transform some user data and place it back in the same table.  I was able to get my connections correct and have the communication channel successfully execute SQL statements to alter the data.  For example, my <b>Query SQL Statement</b> in the sender communication channel is as follows:
    SELECT * FROM USR01 WHERE BNAME='ZTEST2'
    And the <b>Update SQL Statement</b> in the sender communication channel is:
    UPDATE USR01 SET BNAME='ZTEST'  WHERE BNAME='ZTEST2'
    This works fine and when I go to transaction se16 and pull up that table I see that the username gets modified when the interface is activated.  However, I haven't really figured out exactly how to configure the communication channel / data types so that I can run a SQL statement that will populate my data type that I created for mapping.  In other words, lets say I created a data type that looks as follows:
    mt_sender
        row
             MANDT
             BNAME
             STCOD
    And I want to populate that data type with data from the USR01 table (in the corresponding fields), what would my SQL statement look like in the sender communication channel?  I read a few weblogs on how to do scenarios like this, so I built my receiving Data Type to look like this:
    mt_receiver
         STATEMENT
              ROW
                   action
                   TABLE
                   access
                        MANDT
                        BNAME
                        STCOD
    But I still don't understand how exactly XI correlates the data types / mapping and transformations to the SQL statements....
    I'm having a hard time putting this into words, but basically I'm asking a rather high level question I think.  How does XI relate the data types to the data it pulls from the SQL statements?  How do I actually get the SQL statement to populate my data types so I can do mapping and then repopulate the database table again?  Does this make sense?

  • File adapter questions (beginner)

    Hi everyone,
    I two questions on two topics about file adapter.
    1. I have set up a File adapter for a CSV file to be the input file of my process. Now I would like to have an XML file as the input file, but the content is always ignored.
    here is the XSD :
    <xs:schema xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" targetNamespace="urn:Employees" xmlns="urn:Employees">
    <xs:element name="Employee" type="EmployeeType"/>
    <xs:simpleType name="InitialType">
    <xs:restriction base="xs:string">
    <xs:maxLength value="1"/>
    </xs:restriction>
    </xs:simpleType>
    <xs:simpleType name="AgeType">
    <xs:restriction base="xs:integer">
    <xs:minInclusive value="18"/>
    <xs:maxInclusive value="50"/>
    </xs:restriction>
    </xs:simpleType>
    <xs:complexType name="EmployeeType">
    <xs:sequence>
    <xs:element name="EmployeeID" type="xs:string"/>
    <xs:element name="FirstName" type="xs:string"/>
    <xs:element name="MiddleInitial" type="InitialType"/>
    <xs:element name="LastName" type="xs:string"/>
    <xs:element name="age" type="AgeType"/>
    </xs:sequence>
    </xs:complexType>
    </xs:schema>
    And now the sample XML file :
    <?xml version="1.0" standalone="yes"?>
    <Employees>
    <Employee>
    <EmployeeID>1</EmployeeID>
    <FirstName>John</FirstName>
    <MiddleInitial>N</MiddleInitial>
    <LastName>Smith</LastName>
    <age>24</age>
    </Employee>
    <Employees>
    How can I do that ? Do I need the Oracle XML Gateway ?
    2. In the BPEL console, I can trace the successfull processes. Alright ... But when I put in a file with the wrong format (eg: missing fields), the process does not even appear in the console. How can I trace them ? (completionPersistPolicy is "on").
    Thank you :)

    I'm interested in 2 question (missing fields) too.

  • 3rd Party AC-Adapter Question

    I bought a 3rd Party AC-Adapter for my iPhone and I have a quick question.
    I know the iPhone is required to charge w5 volts and not more, but it says on the box that the *Output DC* is 12V, but it also says 5V DC (regulated). Is this okay? Can I trust it to charge my iPhone? Will it affect the battery meter in anyway?

    Apple was very slow to license its proprietary MagSafe connector to other manufacturers, though it appears they've finally done so now. For the longest time, it was just impossible to find anyone selling third-party MagSafe adapters, and those who did were clearly buying Apple adapters at full price and cutting the plugs off them. It made their products exorbitantly expensive. That's no longer the case; you can find junk MagSafe adapters online now for less than $25. I wouldn't buy one, but you may want to consider that option.

  • Battery adapter question

    What does it mean when the adapter for the battery turns orange and then green and keeps flashing like that?

    Orange means the battery is charging. Green means the battery is fully charged. The charging circuitry turns off once the battery is fully charged and will not turn on until the charge level drops below 95 percent.
    If the light is constantly changing between orange and green then it means the battery is either not holding a charge or the control circuitry is not functioning properly.
    You can try two things:
    Have you ever calibrated the battery? If not that should be the first thing you try. The second thing to try is to reset the power management unit. If this doesn't resolve the problem take the computer in for repair (or replacement of the battery if that's the only problem.)
