Airline travel with imac 24?

I will have to travel occasionally on airlines with my new imac duo 24. Although it may exist, I have not found a post on this specific topic on this forum using the search option. The computer is too large for carry-on by airline (SWA) dimension regulations. What packing options for checked baggage would be best? I was considering using the original shipping container, but if it is manually inspected I doubt that it would be repacked appropriately. Also, the new iLugger bag for the 24 doesn't seem made for checked baggage application. An option is a large piece of luggage with bubble wrap around the computer and lots of surrounding clothing for cushioning. I am leaning toward this last option. Any other ideas or feedback?
Thanks

I would consider using the original packaging that the computer came with, though covering it with cardboard wherever it is obvious what is in the package. Be sure to insure it for the full value whenever shipping it, and keep a backup of its data somewhere that is not being shipped, as my FAQ explains:

  • Traveling with iMac

Is there any danger carrrying the iMac around when traveling from place to place? I have a padded case that was made for another much older computer but into which the iMac fits perfectly but without any kind of internal restraints to keep it from jostling about. Do I risk any internal damage to the iMac?

No there isn't any danger. The inerts of the iMac are fine for traveling. How do you think it gets from manufacturer to store (or your door). It goes though more bumps and bruises then than when you are traveling with it. Just don't drop it too many times

  • Traveling with iMac 21.5 inch

has anyone traveled with a iMac 21.5 inch? I don't have a special bag or anything, and think the computers box is too big fit in the overhead bin.

Air travel will be very tough, if not well nigh impossible. Trains may be a better option, if available. Is remote access to the iMac a viable option for you?
Does the machine have a mechanical HDD or is it a newer one with a PCIe flash drive?

  • Air travel with iMac (21")

I will be traveling by air with my iMac and have already checked with the airline that it will fit into the overhead and that it is ok to bring onboard.
However, I wonder whether I can just use the box the iMac came in (which I understand how iMacs are being shipped in general) or whether i would need a special bag such as iLugger or similar.
    Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

The box that the iMac shipped with should do the job, but check with the airline and use the actual dimensions.

  • Traveling with the imac 24"

    Hi everyone,
I have the late 2006 iMac 24" and i'm looking to bring this along with me for an overseas assignment. I've read about the iLugger and i've read about shipping the iMac using the original box that came with it.
Has anyone had any experience on traveling with the iMac 24". What are my best options for air travel with this? Appreciate your responses.

If I had to travel with my 24" imac, I would use nothing less than this:

  • Traveling with 2nd mac; need to sync iphone

I sync my iphone 3G to my imac 21" at home. I'm traveling with a MacBookPro. I purchased a movie on itunes to watch on my iphone on the plane flight home.
Is there a way to sync a single movie to my iphone without erasing everything currently on my iphone?
    Thanks.

    No.
The iphone will sync pics and itunes content from one computer at a time.
When you sync to another it will first erase the itunes content from the iphone, then replace with content from the new computer.

  • Am traveling with my iPod. Possible to add songs onto it from new computer?

I'm currently traveling with my iPod, and I picked up some CDs on the way. I have a new laptop with me, but it's not the computer I used to load my iPod. My iPod is hooked up to my main computer at home, an iMac, on which I store all my music. My laptop is void of all music. I was wondering if it's possible to import my new CDs onto my laptop's "blank" iTunes, then add the new songs to my iPod without erasing any existing music on it. If so, how do you do it?
    Thanks!

If I have the latest iTunes on my laptop, and I connect my iPod to this new iTunes that has nothing on it, will a popup ask me if I want to automatically update, or will it just do it?
A confirmation screen should appear before anything is deleted from the iPod.
Should I press command-option in case to prevent iTunes from automatically updating my iPod and thereby erasing my music?
    Yes.

  • IBook G3 network with iMac PowerPC G5?

I am looking to buy a used (pre-owned) iBook G3. I currently have an iMac PowerPC G5. Will I be able to network with these two? Perhaps, I am using the wrong terminology. Basically, if I create a file / document on the iBook, will I be able to access it from the iMac G5 and vice versa? Will airport allow me to do this or is that used just to have wireless internet? Or will I only be able to use it as a separate computer?
Also, when traveling with the iBook, will Airport allow me to access the internet at Wi-Fi cafes or hotels, etc?
Thanks for the help. I want to make sure I can do what I need to do before buying this iBook G3.

You will need a wireless router to do what you want to do.
My eMac (in OS 9) is accessible from my iBook G3 (OS X 10.3.9), my iBook G4 (OS X 10.4.9) and MacBook (OS X 10.4.10). I can get to any of the computers from the MacBook, which is now my primary computer (at least for fiddling around on the internet, i.e., here on Apple Discussions).
The eMac is hooked up to the router via Ethernet; all the portables, an iMac G3, and an iMac G4 are all connected via AirPort Cards.
So, yes, it definitely works (although I am not in the know about accessing the OS X computers from OS 9; I only know how to do it from the OS X computers to the OS 9 eMac, not the other way around).

  • Will a mini travel well? what precautions to take if I travel with it?

My life will involve ping-ponging between two addresses over the coming year, and for vision reasons I'm not suited to using a laptop. Need a biggish monitor.
So, I'm asking you long-time mini users out there:
How would I fare if I get a mac mini and use it at home with my existing home peripherals, and buy a monitor and cheap keyboard/mouse to leave at the other end, and travel back and forth with just the mini?
I am wondering if it is too delicate to travel with.
I would not be expecting to use it in motels, airports, etc. while I am traveling. Just want to have it fully usable at both locations.
Has anyone else travelled with their machines, and has anyone found or seen a hard-shell case that the mac mini will pack into well?
    Thanks!

Hi "ed" - to answer your question, I haven't inspected one in person, but I'm sure that the top-end MacBook Pro displays would be fine for my vision.
However, then we start getting into budget constraints... that would be sort of a "Lexus" expenditure where my budget is more "Scion."
I can probably afford a bigger-screen laptop in the PC marketplace, but I haven't looked, actually -- I don't really even need to use a laptop as a laptop, if you see what I mean.
And if I want to switch to Apple, which now'll be a good opportunity to do, I can't afford any of their laptop options (if brand new) at all-- So, I think my only options, budget-wise, are:
    (1) to set up a mini at the other end with bare-bones KB and mouse, and a spare monitor I already have, and ferry the CPU back and forth as desired (sometimes would just leave it there).
Then, if as time passes my eyes get even worse, I can always upgrade to gradually-ever-bigger screen sizes.
Or, (2) to take a chance on a pre-owned smaller/older notebook, like the student-sized macbook, which I'd use the same way-- that would solve all of the airport/portability challenges, all right, but if it broke after a month I'd sure be wishing I'd gone with (1), wouldn't I?
I'm sort of timid about going with anything used, partly because I will be totally new to Apple, and it might not always be clear whether any problems I'd encounter with used equipment would be due to its own malfunction, or just to my own learning curve!!
I was hoping the Apple store website would have some reconditioned or "scratch and dent" laptops on offer, that would have a warranty, but there's nothing.
Thanks for listening! I'll think of your suggestion the next time I am watching the airline baggage guys muscle those checked bags around.... and I'll study how hard they really get slammed.
So far, I've never had occasion to put anything more delicate in a checked bag than a $5 alarm clock.... so I've never paid much attention.... but we've all heard the jokes!!

  • I have a problem with Imac mid 2010 graphics card (ATI Radeon 5670 512MB)

I have a problem with Imac mid 2010 graphics card (ATI Radeon 5670 512MB). When I play video formats like xvid, mkv, avi iMac freezes and emits horrible sound,in service said the problem is not overheating. Not a problem with memory or hard disk because I placed second correct parts. The same problem is with OSX 10.6.8 and 10.8.4 and other players.Apple hardware test found no problem and tech tool pro found no fault.
After five days of testing in the service they can not  found fault and it was decided to change the graphics card.
New graphics have been tested for two days but it is not reproduced divx ... but their test software which did not find any fault on the old graphics...
Do I have the right to complain if repair does not fix the problem because I use non apple softwere and video formats.

You could look at the System Profile for the info it presents for the card.  But why wouldn't you think it's not up to date if you have the latest install (according to your sig above)?
What program are you trying to run?  Is there anything in the system log?
I think it's the program that's having the problem and not anything with your video software.

  • I am traveling with my macbook pro and I forgot to install final cut express and quicktime pro before I left. How can I in a way download them for free on my laptop from where I am

I am traveling with my macbook pro and I forgot to install final cut express and quicktime pro before I left. How can I in a way download them for free on my laptop from where I am? I need them and don't want naturally to buy them again!!!
    Thank you

Assuming you purchased QT Pro, you can always download it again at no extra charge by logging in to your Apple account.
Regarding FCE, there is no way to download & install the product.  You need an original FCE install disk and your FCE serial number.
Final Cut Pro X (aka FCPX) can be purchased & downloaded from the App Store.

I have two Apple IDs - one associated with iPad and iPhone and the other associated with iMac and MacAir. I am going to lose the former e-mail address imminently and would like to associate all devices with just one ID. How do I do this? Thanks

Thanks - I guess it is like there were two of me!
I bought the iPhone first and it seemed natural to link it to the (work) e-mail address which was in constant use. The iMac for home use came next and it seemed natural to use my home e-mail address, particularly as I knew by then that I would lose the work address after my imminent retirement. The same logic went for the recent puchase of the MacAir. I am not sure what happened with the iPad (also a recent purchase) - iTunes seemed to puch me towards the same ID as the iPhone.
It is not a huge problem - just makes my persona look schizoid! Otherwise very happy with everything Apple.

I am new with iMac and I am trying to copy some file from my external HDD that a used with my PC but it does not let me also I can't delete anything from this HDD using the finder. Can somebody help me , please?

No, unfortunately, when you format a drive, it will erase all the contents. So you will need to find a temporary "storage" place to put the stuff using a PC so you have access to it. Then reformat using Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities). If only using with mac, format Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use GUID Partition scheme under Partitions/Options. After formatting, you can drag the files back.
