AirPlay automatically connects to unknown speakers

I'm on a large Wifi network that spans several schools. When I plug my computer into the stereo in my classroom, using the headphone jack, it often connects itself to some sound system in a different school that I've never connected to purposefully. It takes a while to switch back to playing though my computer. I'd like to tell my computer to "forget" this other AirPlay system, like I can tell it to forget Bluetooth devices, but I can't figure out how. Is there a way to do this?

Hi parsa._.13055,
If you are having issues with removing a network and/or setting the order preference for joining a network, you may find the following article helpful:

  • Airplay: cables/connection with powered speakers

My M-Audio DSM1 powered monitors have analog inputs (balanced XLR or quarter-inch TRS jack connectors) and digital inputs (AES-EBU and S/PDIF).
If I want to connect an Airport Express (or Apple TV) to make an Airplay-based music/radio streaming setup which of the inputs would give me the best sound quality (or doesn't it matter?), and what cables or do I need to buy to connect the monitors to Apple's analog/digital audio minijack?

    Hi jdiala,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
For your situation I think there is an easier way to get AirPlay.  There was a new feature added in iOS 8 where your iOS device and Apple TV don't have to be on the same Wi-Fi network.  As long as your iPad mini is running iOS 8, and your Apple TV is the newest 3rd generation, just follow the information outlined below to get AirPlay working between your devices.
    Peer-to-peer AirPlay
With peer-to-peer AirPlay, your iOS device and Apple TV don't need to be on the same Wi-Fi network. If you have one of these products, you can use peer-to-peer AirPlay:
    * iPhone 5 or later, iPad (3rd generation or later), iPad mini, or iPod touch (5th generation) using iOS 8 or later.
    * Apple TV (3rd generation rev A, model A1469 or later) with Apple TV software 7.0 or later. Find out which Apple TV model you have.
To use peer-to-peer AirPlay, your iOS device needs to have both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.
Use AirPlay to wirelessly stream content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
    Take care,
    Alex H.

  • Why doesn't Apple TV automatically connect to remote speakers?

When playing any content in iTunes through my remote speakers connnected via my Apple TV and receiver it initiates but there is no sound.
I have to manually change the speakers in iTunes from Apple TV to computer and back again to Apple TV to make the connection to hear the sound through my surround system. This is just an annoyance and at least there is a solution. However, this worked fine with previous versions of either iTunes or the Apple TV software.

Experiencing the same issue.  Everything used to just work.  I'm up to date on *everything* and it's all apple devices (airport extreme, appletv, 2 macbook pro lion, iphone4s, ipad).
My gut says it's the AppleTV since it happens from both laptops that have itunes.
Let me know if you find a fix.

  • Airplay mirroring automatically connecting to AppleTV

My Macbook Pro is randomly connecting to my AppleTV.  I do not notice until I try to use the sound on my MBP.  Even though I continually set the airplay mirroring to off it continually will automatically connect to one of the TVs.  Anyone else having this issue?

    Hey,
I'm using the exact same setup for my car, and am facing the exact issue.
I suspect the problem is from how YouTube app works. All the "What I am able to do" and "What I am NOT able to do" make me believe that when Airplay-ing a video with YouTube app on iPhone, it sends the url to Apple TV, asking Apple TV to download the video directly over its own network. With our network setup, the router is not connected to any internet source, resulting in endless spinner on screen.
I'm not sure if there's any workaround solution without turning on Hot Spot... please let me know if you found any.

  • ITunes cannot connect to remote speakers / Airport Express

    Hi Guys
This is a quick post with a problem & solution.
I've been searching for ages tonight to find a solution to my problem:
'iTunes suddenly cannot connect to my Airport Express Speakers" and could not find one answer on here, only a mixture of replies all over the net.
So, just incase some people are still looking for an answer:
    What I did...
    1. Go to System Preferences, Network.
    2. Click Advanced, on the TCP/IP tab, set "Configure IPv6" to Off.
Open up Airport Utility, go to the Music tab, set a password (I did this just for the sake of seeing whether iTunes noticed that the Airport was now password protected, then atleast you know it's talking!)
    3. Open iTunes, go to preferences.
    4. Click on the devices tab, untick "Look for remote speakers connected with Airplay, Allow iTunes control from Remote Speakers, Forget All Remotes.
    5. Close iTunes
    6. Open iTunes, retick "Look for remote speakers connected with Airplay, Allow iTunes control from Remote Speakers, Forget All Remotes.
    7. Connect to remote speakers worked!

    thanks Simius,
I just tried what you said to do, i had it in Automatic, but when I momenterely switched to manual the fields were all blank so I left them that way and turned on to automatic as you said and left it in auto, then tried to change itunes speaker to remote airplay and it didn t work.
so i don t know what else to do, I read alot about this in the last few days the bug seems to be related to the newest itunes upgrade and with the presence of the IP6V not turned off completely.
in the old system one could turn it off completely, now the off button is gone.
there are work around using terminal, I tried that but it doens t recognize my commands, so it didn t work either.
    anybody has any idea?
    thansk a lot
    D.

  • AirPlay not connecting to Airport Express

For no apparent reason, my AirPlay will no longer connect to remote speakers.
On my Mac in the office, when I try to send music to AE-connected speakers in my kitchen, I get a -15000 unknown error message.
In Airport Utility everything looks fine - AirPlay is enabled.
    Definitely not a speaker issue.
    Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance.

    just solved it.
My main Airport Extreme base station was not seeing the AExpress base station.
In Airport Utility, I added the AExpress's Wireless MAC address under the Airport Extreme Airport/Access Control and all is happy now.
Not sure why it suddenly stopped working.

  • ITunes 8: I can no longer connect to remote speakers via Airport Express

Cannot connect to my remote speakers, worked before iTunes 8"
I have restarted the computer, iTunes, QT 7.5.5, run disk utility
I get the following error code (-3256) Apple KB research says:
AirTunes: Error -3256 when streaming to multiple AirPort Express units
You may see this message: An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker speaker_name . An unknown error occurred (- 3256 ).This occurs with iTunes 6.0.2 or later.SolutionIf you use a third-party firewall or router, make sure that it is configured to permit UDP traffic.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303157
I followed the KB link, tried KB solution, then I sent this off to Apple.
"Mac G5 2.0 Ghz, OS 10.5.4 just installed iTunes 8, one (1) Airport Express connected to remote speakers. Firewall under Sharing in System preferences does not offer firewall access. Firewall is under Security but "Advanced" is grayed out.
Cannot connect to my remote speakers, worked before iTunes 8"
I have restarted the computer, iTunes, QT 7.5.5, run disk utility, unplugged the airport express.
My G4 PowerBook running an earlier version of iTunes connects without problem.

I just got off a 30+ minute phone call with an Apple Support rep about this. I'm getting error -3256. The rep was patient and tried hard to solve the problem, but was basically clueless. I have a case number and was encouraged to call back tomorrow to speak with a product support specialist.
This stinks. AirTunes is my primary way of playing music from my computer. With no obvious way of rolling back to iTunes 7, this is a big deal.

  • I have programmed my Iphone to automatically connect to confcalls (dialing the nbr, pausing, dialing the PIN code). Works fine from the Iphone as such. When I connect my Iphone in Bluetooth to my car, only the phone

I have programmed my Iphone to automatically connect to confcalls (dialing the nbr, pausing, dialing the PIN code).
Works fine from the Iphone as such.
When I connect my Iphone in Bluetooth to the voice-driven system in my car (Mercedes C), only the phone number appears to be transmitted. Entering a conference call number via the Iphone while driving is not a good idea.
How can I fix this ?

That *****.  I sell electronics on ebay.  Before listing them, i have to test and clean them. I have worked with microsoft Zune, you could sync via wireless through the network to your host computer.
i was hoping Apple would add that feature or the ability to connect to my computer via WiFi or Bluetooth and sync it wirelessly...   It would be sweet to have the bluetooth and wireless opened up so you can do more than just  connect to headphones or a headset...
I upgraded to the iPhone 4 this past december, i am on replacement # 2 or my 3rd iPhone 4...  I was hoping for some upgrades in quality.  Also being left handed, it seemed to drop many calls and give me very poor reception.  i added a Griffin Elan Form Graphie case that covers all but the front, top button, bottom speakers and volume control buttons and the call and reception quality has improved.  But I sure would have loved to see some improvements in the quality and function of the phone...
Thanks for your input, i really appreciate your replies...

  • MacBook Pro won't automatically switch between internal speakers and display audio

I have a MacBook Pro that connects to a LED Cinema display.  It used to automatically switch between internal speakers and display audio when plugged in to the display but won't anymore.  I have to manually change it in System Preferences --> Sound. Does anyone know how to make it do that again?
    thanks,
    Ben

I just want to add, I have the same problem, and just want to help raise awareness of it.
1st, the problem only started recently (have been using the Thunderbolt display since it was released), I did not have this problem, and noticed it beginning only in the last month. (since January)
2nd, My particular setup, includes a hard drive attached to the firewire port on the back of the Thunderbolt Display (so, I am wondering if anyone else experienced this problem with a firewire drive being connected).
         My full setup:
              Macbook Air (2011)
             Thunderbolt display
Western Digital drive (attached to firewire of display)
3rd, If I go into settings, what I will see is the "Display Audio" is selected (but no sound coming out),
If I then select "Internal Speakers," a buffered "history" of all the sounds I did not hear is then played (pretty funny actually) - for  example, if I sent mail, adjusted the volume, and started playing a song.... it immediately plays all those sounds when selecting "Internal Speakers"
4th, If i then select "Display Audio" - it does nothing
5th, what I have to do, to resolve this is:  eject all my hard drives,  disconnect the thunderbolt cable, then reconnect the thunderbolt cable, and everything works as normal.

  • Connecting to remote speakers

Have brand-new MacBook. Was connected to remote speakers. Now connection has vanished from airplay icon pull-down list. Tried connecting twice. No luck. Any suggestions?

Yes, this problem is known since iTunes 9 and Apple does not fix it yet. I am ****** off. I have tried everything, change settings, restart both mac and Airport, change settings of wireless connection, but still iTunes connects to speakers randomly and today I can not connect, I am really ****** off!

  • HT4587 I can't locate airport express icon in itunes to connect my remote speakers wirelessly, can anyone help please?

Can anyone help please? I am trying to connect my remote speakers to my i-tunes library using Airport Express. Everything is connected and working using mt OS device (Ipod Touch 5th Generation) that works fine. I have tuned on home sharing and it says in itunes preferences that I am paired but according to the light on the airport express base station I am not connected to my existing wi-fi network. I cannot find the itune airplay icon anywhere in itunes nor can I find the network link by hovering my pointer of the network connections as suggested in the instructions that came with airport express. Would apprecaite some help please you can give. - thank you.

    hmmmmm.
i'm not trying to get rid of you here, but it might be worth also checking-in/reposting over at the Airport for Windows forum. when Airtunes things get sticky, i generally defer to iFelix or RJ in WI, and they spend a lot more time over there than they do here.
(traffic is so heavy in here at the moment that this thread might be buried out of sight before an AirTunes guru gets to see you.)
here's a link through to the Airport for Windows forum:

  • Headphone jack automatically connects to Apple TV

Whenever I put my apple headphone into my Macbook Pro at home with WiFi the computer automatically connects to the Apple TV and does not allow me to listen with headphone. I have gone into the System Preference and tried to switch the output to the headphones but with the WiFi on it does not allow me to switch it.

Power up the three devices and then click the "Mirroring" icon in the menu bar.
Airplay is for iTunes audio and video. Mirroring shows whatever is on your computer (or iOS device) display.

  • Choice: Auto connect to unknown WiFi -or-Get unwanted messages every time

Here's what I would like to happen (iPhone OS 4):
    1) Connect to my home & known wifi networks automatically (this happens)
    2) DON'T connect to any other networks unless I go to Settings > Wifi and choose one I want (this isn't an option)
    3) DON'T keep telling me about every goddam network in the street every time I get my phone out to use email / safari.
I know I can prevent the available network messages by having "Ask to join networks" off - but then I'm joining every unsecured network in town as I walk around - this is insane. I don't want to be opening up my email and password to snoopers on every unsecured network in town as I travel around. I want to use my cellular network providers data - that's what I'm paying them for.
But when I'm at home I want to automatically join my home wifi network. The rest of the time, don't keep hassling me about every network in the street. Don't join unsecured networks without me even knowing about it. Godammn bonkers.
The only way around this is to turn off wifi every time I leave the house. This is bonkers.

Not correct. I had a meeting for several hours in a hotel recently and when I went to use my phone I noticed that it had connected to the hotel Wifi network (which was unsecured). As my mail checks every 15 mins that means it was being downloaded on their network, which not what I want. Could this happen in an area with poor cellular connection / no service? There was some service when I went to use my phone but maybe it was a weak signal and had disconnected whilst I wasn't using it?
I've never been to the hotel before and didn't have an iPhone the last time I was in that town, so I've definitedly never logged onto that network and it wasn't a generic SSID - it was the hotel name and I've never logged onto another SSID with that hotel name.
That is when I switched "ask to join networks" on and hence the irritating messages every time I unlock my phone and use safari / mail.
I think the current method needs to be reversed in approach so that I have to go to settings to join an unknown network manually (which I do once in a blue moon), rather than the iPhone telling me about every network in the vacinity every single time I go to use mail / safari. I'm quite fine using the cellular data connection, but I do want to automatically connect to my home Wifi.

  • ITunes Error -3256 can't connect to remote speakers

iTunes is behaving erratically. I get a -3256 error when the app tries to connect to remote speakers via an AirPort Express.
Restarting iTunes allows me to connect. iTunes then works until my computer goes to sleep. When I wake the computer it hangs with the -3256 error again. Restart iTunes and it negotiates the network connection perfectly.
I ran AirTunes with no problem for years until version 8 of iTunes was released.
    I'm running iTunes 8.0.2

I'm having the same problem with my macbook pro (OS 10.5.6, iTunes 8.0.2) but NOT with my imac flatpanel 15". I get "An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker "Stereo". An unknown error occurred (-3256)." Restarting iTunes does NOT work for me.
My airport is administered by the older imac flatpanel. My girlfriend's computer - an older macbook pro - does NOT have this problem. Has anyone gotten an answer yet on this?
Is this a known bug since so many of us seem to be seeing it?
