Airplay: cables/connection with powered speakers

My M-Audio DSM1 powered monitors have analog inputs (balanced XLR or quarter-inch TRS jack connectors) and digital inputs (AES-EBU and S/PDIF).
If I want to connect an Airport Express (or Apple TV) to make an Airplay-based music/radio streaming setup which of the inputs would give me the best sound quality (or doesn't it matter?), and what cables or do I need to buy to connect the monitors to Apple's analog/digital audio minijack?

Hi jdiala,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
For your situation I think there is an easier way to get AirPlay.  There was a new feature added in iOS 8 where your iOS device and Apple TV don't have to be on the same Wi-Fi network.  As long as your iPad mini is running iOS 8, and your Apple TV is the newest 3rd generation, just follow the information outlined below to get AirPlay working between your devices.
Peer-to-peer AirPlay
With peer-to-peer AirPlay, your iOS device and Apple TV don't need to be on the same Wi-Fi network. If you have one of these products, you can use peer-to-peer AirPlay:
* iPhone 5 or later, iPad (3rd generation or later), iPad mini, or iPod touch (5th generation) using iOS 8 or later.
* Apple TV (3rd generation rev A, model A1469 or later) with Apple TV software 7.0 or later. Find out which Apple TV model you have.
To use peer-to-peer AirPlay, your iOS device needs to have both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.
Use AirPlay to wirelessly stream content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Take care,
Alex H.

  • Connecting non-powered speakers to iMac Intel

Is there a product that will connect non-powered speakers (that normally connect to a receiver), directly to the iMac Intel (mid 2006)? Either by a cable connector to the headphone port or USB?
I bought 2 Harman Kardon speakers super cheap last year, but have no receiver to power them. I guess I could buy a receiver but I don't really have the space for it. Today, I just bought the Griffin ProSpeaker Cable which connects non-power speakers to the iMac but found out it's for the older iMacs with 2.5mm port. The iMac Intels have a 3.5mm port.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi L.
Tried looking at the page your link directed me to but it was introducing a USB speaker. I know about the multimedia speakers for Apple computers but I'm looking at a way to use the speakers I already have.
I guess if there isn't a cable out there to help hook them up, I will have to purchase either a receiver and go through Airport Xpress or buy the multimedia speakers. (A bit more money than I was hoping to spend.)
    Thanks anyways.

  • Buzzing with powered speakers

I have powered speakers plugged in to my iMac Intel. When I open up Safari the buzzing gets very loud. The frequency and intensity of the buzz changes with different web pages. When I unplug the speakers the buzz goes away...obviously. Now here's the clincher. I reset the PRAM some time ago and the buzzing sound went away. When I powered down the computer a few days ago, then powered back up, the buzz returned. I have subsequently reset the PRAM a number of times, but this time the buzz doesn't go away.
    Any ideas?

    Have you done the following;
    1. Software Update 10.4.6
    2. Firmware Update 1.0.1
There is nothing specific from Apple, but folks in the Discussions occasionally report resolution to software/hardware issues after the updates.

  • Upgrade to iTunes 7.2 broke connection with remote speakers

There have been a few discussions about the inability of iTunes to connect to remote speakers in the past, and I found one that was answered regarding an upgrade to 7.0 back in September 2006 - b noir recommended the help article posted on his page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304371
My issue is the same as the one posted in Sept. 2006, but it only started when I downloaded the upgrade to iTunes 7.2. I see the remote speakers greyed out in my iTunes speaker list but can't select them. The fix in the help article above of configuring IPv6 doesn't help. Has anyone else run into this/have any suggestions for me? My wireless network consists of 2 Airport Expresses; the extension is the one hooked up to my speakers.
    Many, many thanks!

I'm experiencing something similar where my remote speakers are working well from my Macs (wired) and Windows Vista laptop (wireless) but do not show up at all from my Windows XP desktop (wired).
I do have Symantec Personal Firewall running, but I have (1) trusted my local internal network, (2) explicitly opened ports 3689 and 5353 and (3) tried it with the firewall disabled with no luck. I do not have Windows Firewall running, and I don't believe I have anything else that would be limiting network traffic. I do not have Bonjour or Rendevous services running. I can ping the AEs just fine (I have 3 AEs), and I am on the same subnet. I have selected LOOK FOR REMOTE SPEAKERS in the iTunes settings, and I am running the latest version of iTunes (7.2). I have also not tried downgraded to an earlier version of iTunes, but for now I'd rather get this fixed in another fashion as 7.2 works well from my other machines.
I hope the above description (with fixes recommended by other users in other threads) is helpful. I appreciate any input or feedback people may have.

    Check your firewall?
System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall
Also, under Advanced, make sure something didn't check "block UDP"

  • Not able to connect with remote speakers after successfully set up

I just finished setting up successfully (joining existing wireless network) but when I go to Itunes and select my remote speakers it just goes connecting to airport and then stops. Any ideas why?

You might want to try upgrading to the latest version of JavaMail (1.4.3), which makes use
of SSL somewhat simpler. Also, the file SSLNOTES.txt included with JavaMail has some
tips for debugging problems such as this, as does the JavaMail FAQ.
Most often this error is caused by not having the appropriate certificates in your local trust
store. The JDK normally comes with the required root certificates, but if you're running in
an application server environment you might be using a different trust store.

  • AirPlay automatically connects to unknown speakers

I'm on a large Wifi network that spans several schools. When I plug my computer into the stereo in my classroom, using the headphone jack, it often connects itself to some sound system in a different school that I've never connected to purposefully. It takes a while to switch back to playing though my computer. I'd like to tell my computer to "forget" this other AirPlay system, like I can tell it to forget Bluetooth devices, but I can't figure out how. Is there a way to do this?

    Hi parsa._.13055,
If you are having issues with removing a network and/or setting the order preference for joining a network, you may find the following article helpful:

  • Can I use Firewire 400 to iPod cable connection with my Touch?

Anyone know if it will work. I don't have USB 2.0 on my Dual 1GHz Tower. It works on the old click wheel style, same connection docking. Ideas?

You can add a PCI USB 2.0 card and it should work. Sonnet makes one that works pretty well:

though I've not had an iPod touch to try when we've had these cards installed.

  • Connecting To Wireless Speakers

This one is really bursting my brain. Bought my daughter a set of Vega Wireless Speakers with iPod dock. Now I have tried everything to get the iPod to play through the speakers and the only way it will do this is with the Aux cable provided with the speakers. Is there something I am missing here or do iPod's not play through these docking stations? Any help would be appreciated before I send the bloody things back.
    Regards

How they connect will depend on the speakers. If you can post the brand and model you're interested in, someone here might be able to offer opinions, but the manufacturer's web site should provide the details of how they connect to your MacBook; if not, be sure to verify Mac compatibility before you buy.

My apple tv3, serial no. C07JWBZ9DRHN is not powering on.  Connected with Computer, with micro USB cable with power on, it is not shown in Devices.  How to rectify

You have to remove all cables before connecting to your computer with micro usb. Power is only connected when using a 3rd gen device and done after the initial connection.

Apple used to sell the Apple Hi-Fi which I thought complimented the Express nicely.
They're both white -- I'll give you that.
What I was thinking of more when I said similar in design was the way that the AirPort Express simply hangs on a wall, no desk or shelf shape required, with the bare minimum of cables. By the same token, I'd like to have a small amp and/or speakers that could hang/be mounted on the wall and deliver music into the room via AirTunes -- without an octopus of cables and without having to dedicate an entire tabletop to it (audio should be heard and not seen.)
Well, that would be great, but there are way too many variations of audio equipment for people with all kinds of tastes to make for a worthwhile market. Whereas I might think it's silly to have more than a 100W stereo amp others would consider that pathetic.
If Apple could pack a 100W+ amp into something that hangs off a power outlet, more power to them. I was thinking more along the lines of 5-10W, or just enough to power some wall mounted speakers. That said, [these speakers|http://store.apple.com/us/product/TU902VC/A?fnode=MTY1NDA1NA&mco=Mjc4M jI1MQ] look somewhat promising. It looks like they could be powered off the USB on the AEX, so at least no power brick. Unfortunately, they don't look geared to wall mounting, and who knows what the audio cable connections look like (because the ad deceptively photoshopped them out of the picture.)
The Express's low power analog output, plus optical, not to mention an Ethernet port, router, bridge, a/b/g/n wireless access point and USB printer port in such a tiny package with a self-contained power supply is a such a generalist's piece of connectivity I can't imagine asking for anything more.
It is a pretty impressive package. But, I'm still asking for GigE in the next rev.
