Airplay causing MacBook Pro to overheat

When I AirPlay video from the MacBook Pro to the tv, it overheats (fan goes like mad and won't turn off) but if I watch the exact same video on the monitor, it is fine. Do I have a setting wrong here, or is there something that I can do to help with this? The only time the MacBook Pro ever does this is when I send video through AirPlay - otherwise, there is no issue.
Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.

Hello 25th Floor,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I understand that you're wanting to AirPlay from a Mac to an iOS device.  AirPlay mirroring from your Mac is designed to only function with an Apple TV.  Please see the following article for what is required to use AirPlay Mirroring in OS X.

After I upgraded to 10.6.3, my MacBook Pro gets incredibly hot, then crashes with the message my 'Startup Disk is Full'

I would theorize that some third party application or extension is continually scribbling errors to disk, causing both the excessive processor use and the disk to fill up.
Check your logs using Applications->Utilities->Console for anything obvious.

You need to upgrade your OS. It's your responsibility to verify if your equipment meets the system requirements, not the Apple Store.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Macbook Pro 2012 overheats with Diablo 3

I just bought the new 2.6GHz 8GB RAM Macbook pro (non-retina) last week, and the machine overheats horribly when I try to play diablo 3 (even on the lowest settings). It runs fine for a couple minutes, then the aluminum becomes so hot that I cannot even hold my hand on it for 30 seconds. Also, the game begins to lag terribly. This overheating problem occurs during some regular internet use also and slows it down to the point where it's impossible to watch YouTube. I know it isn't my wifi connection since I run the same things on my iMac in the same room (not at the same time). Am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance!

My new 15" MBP (Same specs are yours) runs Diable 3 fine. Everything is turned up and it's very fluid.  I rest my MBP on a cooling pad to help with the cooling.  Mine does get hot, but I have played it for several hours with no lagging/stuttering (Caused by excessive heat).
Your MBP will run Diablo just fine (And WoW for that matter. I have everything set to Ultra and I push ~35FPS in SW.)
Instead of troubleshooting it, I would make an appointment with the Genius Bar, or if you don't have an Apple store close by, give them a call.  There is something wrong with your MBP.
Hope you get your MBP fixed quickly

  • Airplay on macbook pro 17" NOT WORKING!

    Howdy all --
I've searched around on this and other forums for a solution to this problem, to no avail.
    First, the specs:
Apple TV is running Apple TV Software 6.0.1 (6646.80.1) and in direct line of sight to Macbook Pro
Macbook Pro 17” is mid 2010 2.53 GHz Intel Core I5 with 8 GB RAM running Mavericks 10.9
Both are connected (strongly) to the same 802.11n wireless network
    What I'm doing:
I turn on the Apple TV and go to settings —> Airplay —> turned ON
I go to my Macbook preferences, choose Displays and get the following screen — nowhere does Airplay appear in this menu!
What am I missing? It seems like my hardware and software are both too current for me not to have Airplay mirroring/desktop extension capabilities.
    PLEASE HELP!

  • AirPlay from MacBook Pro to an iPad?

Can AirPlay be used to mirror a MacBook Pro (OS X10.9.3) to an iPad running iOS 7.1?
The support material from Apple (and most of the community discussions) concern getting Airplay from a Mac computer or iOS device to run to an Apple TV.
But there are some support/discussion elements that also suggest it would be possible to do mirroring from a computer to an iOS device.
FYI - I don't have an Apple TV.  And the Airplay icon does not appear in the Control Panel of my iPad.  My MacBook Pro Display Settings shows the capacity for AirPlay display, but does not detect any devices.   I've not installed any third party "air" mirroring applications.

  • Choppy video playback with airplay from Macbook Pro

I experience very choppy video using airplay towards my Airplay unit (3rd gen).
I am using a Macbook Pro (15" retina, late 2013 version) with these specifications:
    - Intel Core i7 2.7 GHz.
    - 16 GB ram.
    - 768 GB flash/SSD.
...and so on. I have the Mavericks OS installed (10.9.1).
When I duplicate or extend the screen of the computer to my Apple TV it is chopping EXTREMELY much. I am not talking a little bit - but it is not even watchable. I thought that it could be the router itself as the connection is (probably, correct me if I am wrong anyone) is directed from the computer - to the router - and then to the Apple TV, which could make the router like a filter in the process. And if something would prevent the signal from reaching the Apple TV with "full speed" it could prevent the actuall image.
However, when I am using the iPhone 4S and streaming video (both video found in my phone as well as streamed TV from apps such as Magine.com) the image flows completely flawless. There are not even a touch of lagging. It flows perfect, just as watching a movie directly on the TV.
The networking hardware in the phone is slower than in the Macbook Pro retina (late 2013) - both for sending and recieving data. But still... my iPhone works better than the Macbook Pro for the Apple TV. Even though that the processing, memory, graphic and networking power is probably a thousand times faster in the computer... it still performs really bad.
I have followed some discussion threads here (https://discussions.apple.com/message/22051725#22051725 and https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5734226?tstart=0 just as a couple of examples). I have accessed my router (Netgear Gigabit EVG 2000) and increased the Wireless mode to "up to 270 Mbps. I have also followed the previously linked threads and disabled the WMM (in the QoS-section). I felt that this made a little bit of a difference...
...when I am mirroring the screen and scale down the resolution to match the AirPlay screen (full-HD, 1920 x 1080) it works okay, but still chops quite a bit almost all the time. But if I extend the screen and want to watch TV at the same time as I am doing something else on the computer - then it chops so that it is not even possible to watch.
This have to be something either with the Mavericks OS or with my network settings - can anyone help me...? It would mean A LOT!

Curious why you think it would be my network when the same network is being used by the iPad 3rd Gen and iPhone 5 and they both stream without issue. As far as the other items you mentioned, all devices are up-to-date with the latest firmware/software and the latest MacBooks do not have ethernet ports. Speedtests that I have conducted also indicate that bandwidth is not the issue as the results show that the speeds received from the router are quite impressive.

  • HT201343 Airplay on MacBook Pro Retina

I am having trouble getting my MacPro Retina to connect with AirPlay AppleTV. I can see the library on my AppleTV but I cannot see AppleTV on my displays. I have Home sharing on, everything is on the same wifi network using an Airport router. I have a 3rd Gen AppleTV and a 2013 MacPro 13" Retina laptop running OSX 10.9.2. Also Airplay works fine on my iPad2 and on an iMac.

    Hello,
I am having this same problem and cannot seem to find the solution anywhere.  Everything has been attempted: Router reset (even though mirroring works fine on my iPhone and iPad 3), Software is up to date on both apple TV 3 and 2012 Macbook Pro, MBP has been rebooted and so has the Apple Tv.  The support link from above is of no help because it suggest that my computer/software is not compatible, but all the prerequisites have been met. Someone please advise.
