AirPlay confused

Can I set up 2 apple tv on the same network and iTunes account, and choose which apple tv I want to AirPlay to from my iPod 4g? or does only one apple tv,  show up on the AirPlay list when you hit the AirPlay button ?
I have one apple tv In my livingroom,  and want to set up a second in our kids room so they can AirPlay on their tv from their iPods .
So can I AirPlay on my apple tv in the livingroom.  Then the kids choose their apple tv in the bedroom to AirPlay to? All iPods on the same network and iTunes

Yes you can do that, if both Apple TV's are connected to the same network, they will both show up as an option in the AirPlay options on the iOS devices you have. You might have a bit of fun to begin with when the kids realise they can send content to either TV, but hopefully you can train them not to do that.

To check your model go to About This Mac (by clicking on the Apple icon, top left) and then select more info. If you wish to use mirroring you will need one from 2011 or later running OSX 10.8 or later. The alternative would be to use 3rd party software like Airparrot.
About AirPlay Mirroring in OS X

  • I have airplay button but it won't work from imac to ATV. Phones are a-go however...

    Current household setup:
-most recent imac that didn't get lyposuction. Not upgraded to 10.7.5. Currently sitting at OS update one before that.
    -2x Iphone 4S
-Apple TV, most recent model, updated to latest update.
    -Linksys 2600E wireless router
So currently, I can airplay and mirror from both iphones to the Apple TV with zero issues. Music streaming, youtube mirroring and browsing all works flawlessly. However, when I attempt to stream a .mp4 movie from itunes to the apple TV by either playing it on the imac OR playing it from the Apple TV it fails.
Everything worked perfectly until I updated the Apple TV to 5.1. The moment that update went through, it "broke" airplay between the imac and ATV. Now, in iTunes I still have the airplay icon and it's clickable to select Apple TV for streaming, but when it begins, it just sort of hangs then eventually times out.
I've managed to get it to work briefly (for 20 minutes) by changing some router settings, but nothing permanent.  From memory (I'm currently at work) the settings on my router are as follows:
    -WPA, non hidden SSID
    -MAC Address filtering OFF
-2.4GHZ on 20hz only (as suggested by apple support page)
    -5ghz on 20 to 40
-Port forwarded the following ports, now this is from memory so may not be 100% - 123, 3689, 5353  http://http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2463
-the band or channel signal is set to Auto for both.
These are the settings as recommended by Apple and it still doesn't work. I think that the 5.1+ update screwed with some wifi settings in the ATV airplay fuctionality but I'm pretty confused about everything. How come it works via iphones, but not from the imac? (which is also on wifi)
My iphone, iMac and Apple TV have the same home share account logged in, all on the same WIFI network, through the same router. It's odd.
If anyone has suggestions or answers, I'd be thrilled to try them out or look into them further.

  • How can I get AirPlay mirroring to fill widescreen? It works automatically for apps built for apple tv, but not Hulu Plus, for example, which letterboxes.

Airplay mirroring works great for apps (mostly video-related ones) with native Apple TV support, but for other apps - most notably Hulu Plus, it will only show letterbox on my 16:9 plasma TV. Again, my movies, tv shows and in-app videos like in CNN where there's a built-in AirPlay support will fill my widescreen, but apps that don't (Hulu Plus, games, photos) will not. Do I have to change the aspect ratio on the tv to 4:3? Will changing the resolution help.
How can I get mirroring to fill the entire tv screen, regardless of the app? Thanks.

Guys. Let's not get confused here.
-AirPlay mirroring feature 'mirrors' what's on your iPad 2 or above or your iPhone 4s on to your big TV via the Apple TV black box.
-Video apps that stream video (like native YouTube app) uses AirPlay which is different to mirroring.
-When you use the 'mirror' feature you get black bars all around (left/right & top/bottom)
-There are Games that use the full screen via the AirPlay mirroring feature and there are games that don't. It depends on the Game. For example download Asphalt 7:Heat and you'll notice you get widescreen display on the big TV but if you play Batman or Max Payne or others that don't support AirPlay mirroring then it you get black bars left and right.
-What's neat about the AirPlay mirror feature is that when you play Asphalt 7 with 'mirroring' set to on, the race is shown on the TV while your iPad shows something completely different (the route in real time with your rear view mirror)
-The Apple iPhoto app on your iPhone 4s or iPad 2/3 with AirPlay mirroring feature on you get a different experience. All of a sudden it goes full screen, and you are presented with their iPhoto logo.
-Those who have the first generation iPad don't have mirroring capabilities so the Asphalt 7:Heat games feature aren't available or the iPhoto app features. With iPad 1 you can only stream video or music or image slideshow (which all stream full screen). iPad 2 and iPad 3 can also do this but with the added benefit of 'mirorring' what is displayed on the iPad screen. Some apps take advantage of this, some don't.
There are no special setting on Apple TV to get rid of the black bars. You may be able to change the zoom settings on your actual big TV.
Hopefully this will clear this all up. I have the iPad 1 and recently upgraded to the new iPad 3. I also have an iPhone 4s. Same issues.
I don't think the AirPlay 'mirror' feature has developed fully yet. It has it's limitations but also has its advantages.

  • I have an iPod touch 5 16 gb and I have heard that it has airplay but it not showing up what do I do?

Hi guys so I have an iPod touch 5 16 gb and I'm very confused? I have heard ipod 5 has airplay but on my iPod touch i don't see like an airplay icon! Please help me because I'm very confused! I know my name is IPOD_GENIUS but I'm not a genius on this though! Lol thanks for the help maybe this can help someone else too!

If you have both a device that supports AirPlay, and the iPod has Bluetooth turned on, then it should appear in Control Center (swipe up from bottom).
If you are talking about AirDROP, then in Control Center, the AirDrop button is right below the volume controls. (This AirDrop only works with other iOS 7 devices with AirDrop enabled, not Macs). I have tested this feature, and it works fine.

  • Getting "There are no speakers connected to the AirPlay device " device-name "

For the past several years, I have had a stereo receiver hooked up to and airport express to stream music wirelessly from my iMac to stereo speakers.  All of a sudden, I started getting the message "There are no speakers connected to the AirPlay device "<device-name>".  So, what changed, we recently changed ISP from Verizon DSL to RCN cable, I changed my Apple ID (due to the ISP change), I upgraded all computers to OS X Lion, and I have a new iPhone5.  I can't tell you exactly when during the process things went bad, but I can tell you what I have done to solve the problem:
I checked that my devices are configured correctly. The network layout is as follows: I have an Airport Express on the 3rd floor of my house, along with the iMac containing the iTunes library, I have an Airport Express on the 2nd floor acting as a repeater, I have an Airport Express on the 1st floor acting as a repeater and connected to my stereo receiver and 4 speakers.  I control which set of speakers is "on" via the receiver.
I checked that I can get sound out of the speakers via the receiver by selecting FM and got radio to play, so I believe the receiver is ok.
I swapped this receiver with another receiver and got no sound and still the message "there are no speakers connected..."
I moved the Airport Express from the AUX port to the TAPE2 port to check the port.  Still no sound.
I checked the cable with a Bose box and got sound, so I believe the cable is ok.
I plugged a headset directly into the Airport Express and got no sound.
I swapped the 2nd floor and 1st floor Airport Express units, reconfigured the new 1st floor unit to turn on Air Play and still get no sound and the error message.
I am controlling the music using the Remote app on my iPhone.  I have configured the new device to use this library.
I am tired, confused and at a loss.  What can be going on here?

All that I can suggest is that you perform a Factory Default Reset on the Express to wipe the current settings and set it up again.
If you are still having problems after that, you need to take the Express to an Apple Store or Apple Servicer near you to let them have a look at what I suspect is a defective AirPort Express.

  • Itunes x64 Windows 8.1 Itunes 11.1.3, Itunes doesn't display airplay icon for multi speakers, it does appear when my iphone connects via airplay to my airport express being used for wireless audio. How to fix ?

Here goes, when Itunes is started (have tried pc reboot and itunes restart) no airplay icon, even though my airport express is connected to second stereo, with green light and confirmed newest firmware for device id A1264 etc. Can send audio to device and device works well.
    BUT
Itunes can only see the wireless speakers when another airplay device (my iphone) pairs and PLAYS via the wireless speakers. THEN Itunes shows the airplay icon, I can then pair my PC to the wireless speakers, connect (says can't play audio because speakers are already paired), disconnect iphone airplay and then the PC connects and can play through wireless speakers.
This is a long process, some sort of glitch etc. and I figure it's an airport express thing maybe that is not announcing itself on the WIFI until it pairs to my iphone, or maybe it's a pc problem that my airplay networking via my PC is not announcing itself properly to bonjour WIFI ?
    Hopefully someone can help me.
    Thanks,
    Laurent

    Open control panel.

    Click the properties button
Find Internet ''PROTOCOL VERSION 6(TCP/IPv6)''  anduncheck it, then click OK.
    Click CLOSE
    Restart your PC and try.
    Reason For Problem
When u will use ipV6 , you have to setup your router and lan/wifi in ipv6 mode. Then bejour pass sound through ipv6 but when you use 2 mode ( ipv4 and ipv6 ) together benjour gets confuse some time it pass through in ipv6 and sometime ipv4 .if your router setup is ipv4 then, when banjour pass sound through ipv6 you will not see airplay button in itunes.

  • What do I need to run airplay?

I've been researching this for weeks and I'm just confused. Please help.
    What I want to do:
I want to play the songs off my iMac on my stereo in the next room and also be able to access those songs on a separate iMac (in another room, obvs).
I want to control it through my iPhone using Remote.
I may also, at a later date, want to run films and photos from the iMac to the telly (once I buy one)
    What I have:
2 x iMacs (different rooms, obvs)
    iPhone 4S with Remote app
    An iMac remote control
    Airport Extreme (not in use)
Wi-Fi (courtesy of BT Home Hub 3)
    Why I'm confused:
I thought it could all be sorted with an Apple TV, then I read somewhere I'd probably also need Aiport Express.
    THEN
Someone told me all I needed was the Airport Extreme instead
    THEN
Another person told me the Wi Fi I have would be sufficient
I have come to the all-knowing Apple Discussions for the precise explanation.

  • Stand alone VGA to AirPlay encoder?

Does anyone know of a stand alone device that can take a VGA input (or HDMI, DVI, etc)  and then output (preferably to Ethernet) AirPlay?
I'm looking for something where a computer is not required - a stand alone box.  Appliance if you will.
I can always hack up a Mac Mini and a third party video input box, but I'm hoping there is something less pricy and less complicated already out there!

    >>airplay is a format which connect to a device and push a video stream to it
    Yup...
    >>airplay is a peer to peer system and not a broadcast system
That's an interesting point.  I thought I saw someone using multiple devices with an AirPlay connection, but I may be confusing it with software like AirSharing.  Hmm...  a new point to ponder - thanks!

  • Why is someone's iPad trying to access an AirPlay code on my AppleTV- Gen 2?

Why is someone's iPad trying to access an AirPlay code on my AppleTV- Gen 2?
My wireless router is password protected.
I've even changed the AppleTV's identity from "living room" to something personal so that the individual isn't confused finding their own?
For a couple of days my iPad and computer were off and it still happened around the same time as well!
I thought in order to use AirPlay one has to be connected to my wireless network. I may be impatient for results, but last night I've refreshed my Netgear router in order to create a new pass phrase, password, hid my wireless network from others and such. I mean we just moved in our apartment 4 days ago, can someone really steal our router username and password that quickly!
Thank you in advance for your help!

I would suggest doing a restore of your Apple TV from recovery mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4367
And maybe put a password on your Apple TV.  Also try changing the name of your Apple TV to something non-generic.

  • Can Airport Express do AirPlay and AirPrint at the same time? Mine doesn't

I've just set up my Airport Express to join my existing network in client mode, wanting to use it for Airplay and Airprint. Both seem to work fine, but then they mysteriously stop working. I think it happens when I print something; that seems to mess up the device. Like, the Airport Utility will say the base station is no longer part of the network, but I can still print to it, and Airplay doesn't work. It's very confusing.

Just to clarify, I'm not actually using Airprint. It's a USB printer and I'm just printing to it wirelessly via the Airport Express.

  • Airplay icon not appearing on Macbook Air (mid 2011). Everything is updated, can someone please help me out??

Hey, so I just bought an Apple TV specifically to mirror my Macbook Air screen to my TV.
My Mac is mid 2011 so it whould be working, I'm wondering if there is a setting I have missed or something?
All other functions are working except the Airplay icon is not showing on my toolbar??
Anybody know how I can fix this??

According to other discussion threads I need Mountain Lion? I'm on 10.7.5 is that Lion? My Mac says I have no new software updates though? So confused!

  • Do ANY apps allow airplay?

The title of this thread states everything. I have been perusing a lot of these threads for quite some time now, and here's why: I got the AppleTV today and was very excited. Now I could buy and rent shows/movies and play anything from my iPad!! I was very confused when I tried to play a movie on HBO GO and all I got was the audio on my screen.
After troubleshooting and trying to read up, I found out that AirPlay for HBO GO is blocked!
    And Amazon...
    And Hulu...
    And Youtube through my Safari....
And basically ANYTHING I tried to play.
So here's the million dollar question. Why in the world should I not return this right now? I feel like Apple has an amazing product on their hands, considering the amount of people with an iPhone or iPad. But... why should we buy this if we can't stream anything?
Let's make one thing very clear. If I returned this tomorrow and took my hundred bucks, I wouldn't be mad at Apple. But... really? This sound of this Apple TV made me so excited, and I can't help but feel let down by the amount of potential amazing video data being blocked from AirPlay.
Sorry for the wall of text, and I really would appreciate it if someone could honestly tell me why (or maybe why not) I should stick with this purchase and not return it. I have a Playstation3, as well as a laptop with an HDMI cord I can connect to the TV. So I can already do this with either of those. The main thing for me was the luxury of not having to hook up the computer to the TV.

None of the streaming sites I know of have any sort of remote capability. Use one of the VNC apps and take control of your Mac's screen. Then you can control any application you wish.
    Regards.

  • Connecting USB Speakers to 2013 iMac without Airplay?

Have new 27" iMac (Intel i5 May 2013 build) and find no way to hook up external USB speakers.  System's preferences offers no external opiton beyond Airplay which I hope to avoid.  I don't know the distinction between USB 2 and USB 3, but wonder if my two year old speakers have an older version of USB connection and whether it will work.  Thanks for any help with this newbie question.

Thanks, BD.  I've been reading about target disk mode which sounds like it might be an appropriate solution for getting my photos and music to the new iMac.  If I understand it, it sounds like I would connect the old MBP to the new iMac with a Firewire 800 cable (with Thunderbolt adapter for the iMac).  The iMac would be running while the old MBP would be started up in Target Mode -- either by holding the T key while booting, or by restarting after selecting the Systems Disk in System Preferences>Mac HD>Restart.  The target MBP should come up in Target Mode and mount in the Finder on the iMac.  This should allow copying the iTunes Files from the MBP to iTunes on the iMac.  Similarly I've read this would enable me also to copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder of the MBP to the Pictures Folder of the iMac.  I'm nervous about whether copying is a simple drag-and-drop, or perhaps a multistage process that requires knowing where precisely to place the new files.  The process on the iTunes seems critical since I'm moving 125 GB.  Still, the concept seems like it might be relatively straight forward as long as I don't get confused about which computer is which, and whether I am dealing with the files themselves or the whole Library folder.  In the case of iPhoto, I believe I'm copying the whole Library from Pictures on MBP to Pictures on iMac.  On the iTunes, I'm not sure if I'm copying the files into the iMac iTunes, or simply copying the Library from MBP Music to iMac Music.  If you have any insight on Target Mode, it might help me decide whether that's the way to go.  Thanks for your replies.  It's nice to know someone out there actually understands this stuff.  Best, Dean

  • Airplay only playing sound

I have an iPhone 4 and just got the new iPhone 5 today and on both devices, airplay is only playing sound when I try to mirror a youtube vidio from my iphones to my appleTV.  When I set the iphone to mirror to my appletv, i get the message "this device can only play sound over airplay."
Any thoughts as to why??  Don't get it...

What an obnoxious reply.  It sounds like you are completely confused by what I was suggesting, so let me try again ...
I had suggested using the Remote app on your iOS device -- not the slim remote control that came with your ATV.  Using the Remote app on your iOS device is much easier than the ATV remote control, and using the iOS app is no harder (or slower) than navigating YouTube on your iOS device.
If you don't know what the Remote app is, then you're you're not only missing out on a great way to control your ATV, you're also showing your ignorance (or is it arrogance?)
