Airplay disconnects regularly

I am using an Apple TV 3'rd gen with a Macbook Pro 13" early 2011. They are connected to an Asus RT-AC66U, the mac wirelessly and the Apple TV with ethernet cable.
When I am using Airplay (either screen mirroring or just the audio) it keeps disconnecting (when listening to spotify) with probably 15-20 minutes in between.
It doesn't go to sleep (screen is still lit) when this occurs. I have the Magsafe adapter connected, and I have tried both 2,4GHz and 5GHz frequency on my router. It has the latest firmware and I am using the latest version of Mavericks, and the ATV is updated.
What could the problem be? I thought buying a powerful router would solve the problem, but it still happens.

Network issues can come about at any time. Mirroring requires a lot of resources, and is reliant upon a stable network. Ethernet would help rule out wifi issues, if you are unable to do so then it is especially important to get a network report, or test on another network (preferably a controlled one like Apple's). Also best to make sure there are no other activities occuring when attempting to mirror (other streaming, network backups etc)

Apple fixed it!   Update your firmwares everyone.
I have three AirPort express units broadcasting the same wireless SSID.   I can walk all over my house with AirPlay music streaming and it plays rock solid!  (even when you see the iPhone WiFi bars go from low to high as it jumps to the next access point!)

  • Airplay disconnects every hour

I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro running OSX Mavericks 10.9.2 connected using AirPlay to an updated AppleTV.  I am NOT running battery power.  Using iPhoto I am playing a slideshow on the TV.  The slidewhow runs seamlessly but the AirPlay connection automatically disconnects every hour (exactly one hour).
It is not a networking issue associated with any latency or interference.  There are no other devices on the wireless network; the environment is free of other sources of competing RF energy.  I have no overlapping channels, competing radios or other sources of RF energy in the same frequency range (I live in the country and the nearest home is more than 1/2 mile away).  There are no operating microwave ovens, bluetooth devices, cordless phones, baby monitors or other potential competitors in the area.  Even if such interference were present it would not account for an interruption that occurs at exact 60-minute intervals.  To further prove this I have verified that the problem still exists when connected via Cat5e.
When the AirPlay connection is broken the slideshow continues to play on the MacBook.  If I stop the slideshow and re-start it the mysterious 60-minute disconnect counter does NOT reset; it still disconnects exactly one hour after the AirPlay connection started.  This suggest the issue is not a timer or setting in iPhoto.
I tried unchecking the "Automatic graphic switching" box in the Energy Saver section of System Preferences but this actaully caused a random freeze in the slide show.
I suspect there is a setting somewhere that I am unaware of or have overlooked.  Has anyone had this problem or can you suggest a fix?  There are lots of posts on the Internet of people having AirPlay disconnect at irregular intervals but I cannot find one that addresses a non-networking-related every 60-minute disconnect.
    Any insight will be appreciated.

It may be worth looking at what your DHCP lease is set for on your dhcp server. If it is set for a 1 hour lease it may be the cause. You could try setting up the ATV and the Macbook Pro with a static IP or set your dhcp lease to expire at a longer interval, say 4 hours to see if it goes longer than an hour. I have seen dhcp lease setting cause this type of problem in the past.

  • Mac Airplay disconnects when computer falls asleep

Recently (and this is quite a new issue for me, probably after last Apple TV update), AirPlay disconnects right when the Mac goes to sleep. Apple TV stays on, just the AirPlay connection drops. I have to manually connect the computer again (with the AirPlay icon).
It didn't happen with previous versions of Apple TV and I set the sleep time to never.
    What could be the issue?

Same here on my iMac 2013 running Mavericks. As soon as display goes asleep, Airplay disconnects. Caffeine does not help.
Unchecking mirroring does not work either, leaving me with a screen resolution that's maybe fit for TV but unsuitable to work with when you want to carry on using your computer while music is playing on the Apple TV.
I start wondering if Apple is actually doing sufficient testing of their software. These are rather basic errors.

  • Airplay disconnecting when sending and recieving a message

I use Airplay on my iPhone to stream music from the music app to my Apple TV. When sending and recieving a message over Skype or Facebook, my phone disconnects from Airplay, pausing the music.
Is this a common issue, and are there any known fixes, or do i just have to wait for Apple to fix this in a future update?

That is silly - Facebook message notifications are tiny.  You can't provide some vague hand waving dismissal of the problem and blame network throughput.
I have the same issue - it's obviously a bug with iOS or Facebook.  Airplay shouldn't disconnect every time a new message arrives.  If I don't have Facebook open the same messages still arrive in the background and airplay works fine.
The issue is specific to a foreground app receiving notifications and then Airplay craps out.
    Come on Apple, fix this!

  • Airplay disconnection: port unreachable

    Hi,
I use my mac (on maverick) with an airplay speaker and I have a disconnection problem.
Sometime, the music is cut without specific reason. So I do some tests and I found some trails but I don't know how to resolve this.
If I play a mp3 320kb/s, it cut more often than a 128kb/s (it happens with 128kb/s notwithstanding).
So, the size of the music seems to play in my problem.
I run a tcpdump to see what happens when the music cut.
Here is when the music plays: 10.0.0.1 is my host. 10.0.0.3 is the speaker.
    18:34:22.197963 IP 10.0.0.11.54966 > 10.0.0.3.opennl: UDP, length 1018
    And when the music cuts:
    18:34:54.294150 IP 10.0.0.11 > 10.0.0.3: ICMP 10.0.0.11 udp port 6002 unreachable, length 36
So, it seems the speaker is unreachable.
My question is why ? I don't understand why the speaker becomes unreachable sometime, never on the same times.
    Thanks for your help.

AirPlay - What does this feature do with Airport Express?  Can I send my presentation to Windows and Mac notebooks of the audiances provided they all use the wifi network of Airport Express?
AirPlay is a means to stream audio and video from an iTunes source to an AirPlay-enabled speaker: AirPort Express Base Station (AX), Apple TV, or another vendor's AirPlay-enabled device. Check out the following Apple Support article for details.
USB port - It memtions for printer only.  How can a USB port for printer only?  I prefer using it with my portable hard disk in more practical conditions.  Is it because it cannot provide sufficient power to run the hard disk.  In this case, can I use a power adapter of hard disk and connect the hard disk for accessing the data only.
The issue is not related to power. It is because Apple did not include a file server function with the AirPort Express, like it does with the 802.11n AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule. There is NO option to connect a USB HDD to the Express' USB port for sharing it out to network clients.
On the other hand, if you have an actual NAS device, it can be connected to the Express' LAN port and it can then be accessible from network clients.

  • AirPlay disconnect while screen saver

Why does AirPlay with my MacBook Air 2013 always disconnect when screen saver on Apple TV starts? Any other device holds the connection during screen saver. With my MacBook I always have to click on the airplay icon again.
    Many thanks!

The remote still works. I just discovered this, to my great delight!
Don't touch the computer though -- if you have your screen saver set to require a password to unlock, touching anything brings up the password dialog. When that's up, the remote doesn't work. Not unreasonable, just something to be aware of.

  • HT1551 apple tv airplay disconnects

Apple tv 3g plays video from the itouch  to the tv then disconnects after atleast 1 minute.  What seems to be the problem. i tried via wireless and wired but same thing happens. it disconnects after 1 minute or atleast 2 minutes.

    It looks like network problem.
Can you try to connect Apple TV via cable to the router so only iPad is wireless?
This should improve the streaming quality. Also make sure you have a good WiFi signal which is not interrupted in a busy presentation room.

  • Airport Utility & AirPlay Disconnect | Internet OK

I am having intermittent issues with Air Play Disconnecting from my iPad and Mac Computers, which stops playback on the Apple TV. It occurs randomly. I have opened the Airport Utility when this occurs to find that it cannot locate the Time Machine--a rescan does not produce any results. Yet, at the same time, the Internet continues to be accessible through the Time Machine. and an Internet connection is shown on the icon on my computers
the connection will re-establish itself within time, 1/2 hour or more. Sometimes unplugging the TM and plugging it back in will fix the issue.
I'm using the new 3T TM; MAC with Lion, another MAC with Snow Leopard and second gen iPad.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

To other users with the same problem: an OS X Yosemite clean install will fix the issue.

I got the same problems on my E7-00.  The wlan disconnects 1 minute without activity. When I manually connect the wlan and use internet connection the wlan are connected as long as I surf.  This occurred after the last system update on my nokia E7. Previously this worked normally.
A friend of mine uses a Nokia E7-00 and has not implemented the last upgrade.  His wlan are connected as long he is in the range of the known wlan.
This bug must be the responsibility of Nokia to fix.

Airplay disconnecting when devise is idle.  Must reboot to restore.  Is there another solution?

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.

  • DSL Line Disconnections

    Hey guys, new poster here.
Recently my interent connection has been playing up somewhat, it's perfectly fine during the day but once it hits about 4 o'clock in the afternoon it periodically disconnects regularly in intervals of 2-15 minutes. I've checked and re-checked all my wires, inside phone lines and my router itself, none of which seem to be the problem.
I spent time watching my routers system log and whenever it disconnects, it reports that the DSL carrier is down. this leads me to believe that it's the external phone lines causing a problem, as this is something some of my friends have also had problems with before.
Is there anyway of getting this looked at or fixed?

  • Presenting Keynote via AirPlay Mirroring Limitations

I just finished an annual awards banquet where I display a Keynote presentation on two screens and thought I'd share my experience.
The presentation is on my MacBook Pro, and this year, instead of running cables to both projectors, I tried running one of them using AirPlay Mirroring to an Apple TV. The other projector was still connected through the Thunderbolt port. (AirPlay can't mirror to two Apple TVs at the same time.)
First off, I could only make this work with the laptop lid closed. That's because AirPlay only mirrors the primary screen, and the projector connected to the Thunderbolt port is secondary--unless the lid is closed. Keynote has no option to present to BOTH the primary and secondary screen--it's one or the other. This isn't a big problem if you have an iPad or iPhone, however, because you can use Keynote Remote on the iOS device to run the show, and that's pretty slick.
Here's the big problem... When the Keynote presentation is static on any given slide for more than a couple of minutes, the AirPlay connection is dropped and the screen goes dark. This happened to me every time an honoree was giving their acceptance speech. In order to restart the show I'd have to open the laptop lid, switch to Finder and reconnect AirPlay to the ATV--all of which is unattractively displayed on screen for everyone to see.
If anyone has a work-around for this I'd love to hear it, but hopefully Apple will look at presenting Keynote wirelessly as an area that needs improvement. If you're interested in this, please submit feature requests to Apple! http://www.apple.com/feedback/keynote.html
To summarize, the limitations I found are:
    1. AirPlay won't mirror to multiple Apple TVs simultaneously
    2. Keynote won't present to the primary and secondary screens simultaneously
    3. AirPlay disconnects after a few minutes of static screen activity

Sorry for taking so long. Go to Settings and scroll down through the list of apps to Keynote, select it, and you will see the iCloud setting. But this workaround has not worked for me consistently.  Don't make changes to the presentation until you turn iCloud back on.

  • Have to connect twice via Airplay to hear music?

It does this frequently, but regardless of reconnecting, updating, resetting, and reinstalling iTunes, in order to make the Apple TV function through Airplay while powered on, we're required to connect via Airplay, disconnect, and reconnect, in order to hear music.
This also can happen to iOS devices (iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3rd Gen, iPad 1st Gen)
    Any thoughts on this?
After doing this, it works just fine for a while and all devices can connect.
One trend I did notice is that my Windows PC sometimes would not see the Apple TV, and that if I connected via my iPod, it would appear once again on Windows. On OS X, it says it has connected, but nothing plays until I do the disconnect/reconnect.

I've had the same problem too, and have now solved it:
I also found that my iPod touch wouldn't automatically join my home metwork, though it would join other known networks. While searching for how to fix this problem (in addition to the problem that we all share on this thead of needing to type your password twice), I came across this suggestion, which fixed both problems at once:
    - Go to settings>wifi
    - Instead of tapping the network you want, tap "other"
    - Enter the name of the network manually
In my case, this seemed to jog my iPod's memory and it has never asked me for a password since.
I guess you have to have the iPod/phone set to join known networks automatically. If you don't have that for whatever reason, I'm not sure this fix would work.
