Airplay FROM Apple TV

We love the new feature of Mountain Lion which allows mirroring to Apple TV's connected to the same wireless network. Am I understanding that with the ATV 5.1 upgrade, we can now access our Mac FROM the Apple TV? Should we see the Mac in the list of devices in ATV Settings/ Airplay?

I'm having the same problem trying to stream audio from my AppleTV to my speaker connected to an Airport Express. I get no errors or any indication that there's no connection. When I select the Airport Express, I get a spinning wheel on the AppleTV and after a few seconds a check mark is activated next to the name of the Airport Express device, but no sound comes out of the speakers. Any ideas as to why this isn't working?

Your final sentence really makes the problem clear. If turning on remote speakers automatically turns off the ATV speakers it's not really clear what Apple thinks the point of this option is. Surely we often wish to turn on one or more sets of remote speakers in addition to the ATV so that we can spread the music throughout the house. And as you note, the original AppleTV could do this easily and gracefully. I too had really thought that they had really fix this - but it turns out they they still are forcing us to use the Remote app for playing through muli-speakers. How disapp[ointing.

Thanks for your help. Since I'm uninterested in loading all my photos (the only option) into photostream, I won't be able to use the settings in ATV. I guess I'm just stuck with using iPhoto on my MB Air. Thanks again.

Can access Apple TV via airplay, but can't get to internet or iMac from Apple TV. Whenever I try to put my info in it says to try later. When I test network it says network time has not been set. It has worked previously.

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
Restart your mobile device.

AirPlay mirroring from Apple devices to Apple TV not working

Hello, I just bought a Apple TV (3rd gen) the other day. I updated it to the newest firmware, but I still cant use AirPlay. I have a Macbook Pro (mid 2012) on mountain lion, a iPad 2 (ios 6.0.1), and a iTouch 4th gen (6.0.1), but I cant seem to get airplay to work on any of them. All devices are on the same wifi and airplay was turned on the ATV. On my macbook, I would go into System Prefs/displays, but would be told that no devices were detected for airplay. I have double clicked the home button on my iDevices and scroll to the left looking for the airplay button button, but nothing. I even turned on homesharing on all devices (to see if that would do anything for airplay), and made sure all devices were running the latest os. Does anyone have an idea on how I can resolve this problem?

The following steps may resolve your issue:
Apple TV: Basic troubleshooting

If your TV screen appears fuzzy or black (you see no video)
Make sure the television you are using supports the Apple TV resolution requirements. Please see the Apple TV technical specifications.
When you connect power, check to make sure the LED turns on. If the LED is not on, then verify with a known good power outlet or connect something else to the outlet you're using for Apple TV and make sure it works (such as a lamp or clock).
Make sure you're using the correct video cables and that they are connected firmly to Apple TV and to your TV.
Connect the HDMI cable directly into the Apple TV and your television, remove any third party devices or adapters.
Make sure the input setting you've selected on your TV matches the input you have your video cables connected to. See the documentation that came with your TV for more information.
Change the Apple TV resolution by pressing and holding the Menu and Up button for six seconds. The Apple TV will automatically cycle to the next resolution at approximately 20 second intervals. Pressing the Selectbutton will immediately cycle to the next resolution.
If you are connected via HDMI, try unplugging and replugging your HDMI cable.
If HDMI isn't working on an Apple TV (1st generation), try component cables instead (and disconnect the HDMI cable temporarily). Read more about HDMI vs component video.

Sorry, your profile says iPhone 4. Best to be specific or have things up to date in order to avoid misunderstandings and prompt assistance.
In any case you are still using basic airplay. You need to enable mirroring and this cannot be done within an app.

it can airplay from video apps but it can't mirror as in show the screen of the iphone all the time
so it pretty much works like the video out cables it will show video in movies, and youtube and other such supporting apps but will otherwise not give any output on the tv at all

It's actually iOS - I used to be able to use audio Airtunes on the original iPhone, but the AppleTV doesnot list on most of my newer devices in the Apple iPod/Music app.
Apple have deliberately omitted it for some reason while still supporting old Airport Express units.
The only workaround is to use Apple's Remote app to control iTunes on a computer and use the Speaker option there.
