Airplay from macbook to AppleTV...

Apparently you can now share anything on your macbook to your AppleTV with airplay however I don't have the button on the toolbar and cannot see anyway to make it come up. Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

  • AirPlay from MacBook Pro to an iPad?

Can AirPlay be used to mirror a MacBook Pro (OS X10.9.3) to an iPad running iOS 7.1?
The support material from Apple (and most of the community discussions) concern getting Airplay from a Mac computer or iOS device to run to an Apple TV.
But there are some support/discussion elements that also suggest it would be possible to do mirroring from a computer to an iOS device.
FYI - I don't have an Apple TV.  And the Airplay icon does not appear in the Control Panel of my iPad.  My MacBook Pro Display Settings shows the capacity for AirPlay display, but does not detect any devices.   I've not installed any third party "air" mirroring applications.

    Hello 25th Floor,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I understand that you're wanting to AirPlay from a Mac to an iOS device.  AirPlay mirroring from your Mac is designed to only function with an Apple TV.  Please see the following article for what is required to use AirPlay Mirroring in OS X.
Requirements for AirPlay in OS X
    An Apple TV
Apple TV (2nd generation or later) with software update v5.0 or later.
AirPlay turned on in the Settings menu of the Apple TV.
A supported MacAirPlay Mirroring in OS X takes advantage of the hardware capabilities of recent Macs to deliver high frame rates while maintaining optimal system performance. The following Mac models support AirPlay Mirroring when using OS X Mountain Lion or later:
    iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)
Mac Pro (Late 2013 or newer)
    Which Mac do I have?
    A network
AirPlay Mirroring requires either a Wi-Fi (802.11 a/g/n) connection or an Ethernet connection to the same local network that your Apple TV uses.

  • I used to be able to airplay from Ipad1 to AppleTV, but now it doesnt support it.  Why not?

When I first got Apple TV about 2 years ago, I was able to airplay from my Ipad 1.  It wasnt called mirroring back then, but it worked the same.  Now it doesnt support that.  Whats up with that?  Is there a way to work around that?

Verizon is not doing that it is the mail that is doing that.
Check your device settings for email and read the owners manual as to how to set up mail to download. How you want it, leave on server, etc.
    Good Luck

  • Troubles with AirPlay from iPhones to AppleTV

It feels like our AppleTV works worse and worse with every software update. It worked flawlessly when we first bought it: our iPhones would easily connect to the AppleTV and stream music.
Now, many software updates later, it takes numerous attempts just to wake up the AppleTV and start streaming music from an iPhone. I typically have to start playing music on my iPhone first, then select AppleTV, then wait a few minutes and repeat the process several times until it works.
Things have become even worse after one of the last updates: AppleTV still appears as an available device from an iPhone, but selecting it and starting playing music does not wake the AppleTV up. I either have to wake it up manually using the remote or keep it always on.
Also, after one of the latest updates, AppleTV stopped supporting gapless playback when music is steamed from an iPhone. It happens only if I steam from an iPhone to the AppleTV: If I used headphones, bluetooth devices, or stream from a Macbook Pro, then it's normal gapless playback.
I tried resetting the AppleTV numerous times with no improvements.
I'm quite sure that the problem is not with my iPhone: the same thing happens with all our iPhones (we have several in the house). Also, I have recently upgraded from an iPhone 5 to iPhone 6, and it's the same story with the new device.
I'm believe that there are no problems with our wi-fi network: AirPlay works absolutely fine from the Macbook Pro every time.
    Can anything be done?

Just a quick update: I went to the Apple store today and my AppleTV was quickly replaced with a new one, even though my unit was over 2 years old. I checked the new unit at home an everything works flawlessly so far.
If you are experiencing wi-fi issues with your AppleTV similar to mine, check if your unit falls under the 2013 replacement program, before any troubleshooting. I've seen quite a few posts on different forums from people describing similar issues who are unaware of the replacement program. Somehow it went under the radar.
I came across the replacement program only after searching the web for AppleTV's randomly turning off (another issue that became very common in the last few weeks before the replacement).

  • Apple TV new- can I do Airplay from Macbook?

    I have a new AppleTV.
I can send a few things (like from iTunes) to the AppleTV, but can't play a video from my MacBook over the AppleTV (like I can with my iPad).
    How can I do that?
Opps, looks like I already asked this.
But if anyone has new answers...

yes i can do that but dont want a wire between me and tv i wont need on with the ipad 2 when ios 5 comes out
    AirPlay Mirroring for iPad 2
Wow your audience in the board room, classroom or living room. AirPlay now supports video mirroring. Which means you can wirelessly — and securely — stream whatever’s on your iPad 2 to your HDTV via Apple TV. Everyone in the room sees exactly what’s on your iPad display up there on the big screen — even when you rotate iPad from portrait to landscape or zoom in and out on photos.2

  • Choppy video playback with airplay from Macbook Pro

I experience very choppy video using airplay towards my Airplay unit (3rd gen).
I am using a Macbook Pro (15" retina, late 2013 version) with these specifications:
    - Intel Core i7 2.7 GHz.
    - 16 GB ram.
    - 768 GB flash/SSD.
...and so on. I have the Mavericks OS installed (10.9.1).
When I duplicate or extend the screen of the computer to my Apple TV it is chopping EXTREMELY much. I am not talking a little bit - but it is not even watchable. I thought that it could be the router itself as the connection is (probably, correct me if I am wrong anyone) is directed from the computer - to the router - and then to the Apple TV, which could make the router like a filter in the process. And if something would prevent the signal from reaching the Apple TV with "full speed" it could prevent the actuall image.
However, when I am using the iPhone 4S and streaming video (both video found in my phone as well as streamed TV from apps such as Magine.com) the image flows completely flawless. There are not even a touch of lagging. It flows perfect, just as watching a movie directly on the TV.
The networking hardware in the phone is slower than in the Macbook Pro retina (late 2013) - both for sending and recieving data. But still... my iPhone works better than the Macbook Pro for the Apple TV. Even though that the processing, memory, graphic and networking power is probably a thousand times faster in the computer... it still performs really bad.
I have followed some discussion threads here (https://discussions.apple.com/message/22051725#22051725 and https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5734226?tstart=0 just as a couple of examples). I have accessed my router (Netgear Gigabit EVG 2000) and increased the Wireless mode to "up to 270 Mbps. I have also followed the previously linked threads and disabled the WMM (in the QoS-section). I felt that this made a little bit of a difference...
...when I am mirroring the screen and scale down the resolution to match the AirPlay screen (full-HD, 1920 x 1080) it works okay, but still chops quite a bit almost all the time. But if I extend the screen and want to watch TV at the same time as I am doing something else on the computer - then it chops so that it is not even possible to watch.
This have to be something either with the Mavericks OS or with my network settings - can anyone help me...? It would mean A LOT!

Curious why you think it would be my network when the same network is being used by the iPad 3rd Gen and iPhone 5 and they both stream without issue. As far as the other items you mentioned, all devices are up-to-date with the latest firmware/software and the latest MacBooks do not have ethernet ports. Speedtests that I have conducted also indicate that bandwidth is not the issue as the results show that the speeds received from the router are quite impressive.

  • AirPlay from MacBook to Mac mini?

I would like to use one of my mac minis in the office for presenting hooked up to a widescreen TV, however, I really want to AirPlay somehow from my MacBook to it? Is this possible? I realise an Apple TV would be best but I have a couple of mac minis kicking around...

    No.
You need an Apple TV for video or airplay supported speakers for audio.

  • Viewing content from macbook on AppleTV = confusing

I would like to view photos and videos from my Macbook on Apple TV. I don't understand why it is actually so confusing. On Apple's website regarding setting up Home Sharing, it doesn't say what you do after you turn on home sharing. Then what do you do? I still don't see any added functionality to then view my stuff. Please help me understand this:
    1) You can only view photos/videos through iTunes? You cannot go directly from  iPhoto or Quicktime to Apple TV? To view individual images?
    2) I did manage to turn on home sharing in itunes and select the photo albums to share, and then put them up on the tv ( though I can't remember how now ). I checked "invlude videos", but the videos do not appear. I have some AVIs and some MOVs, it appears the MOVs (recorded from iPhone) do appear, but no other formats?
I'm thinking it's actually easier to buy a cable and physically connect my laptop to the tv, and use the tv as the screen.
This whole thing is ridiculously picky! I know it's supposed to be simple but it's really not. Where can I get a thorough explanation on how this all works? Not the skimmed over generalities that Apple provides, but the detailed step-by-steps that include what you can and cannot view... I'm tearing my hair out here. Thank you.

You can do that but you'll need to use a 3rd party DVD player, there are a number of free ones that can be downloaded from the Internet, such as VLC. It's likely that Apple's license to distribute DVD playing software doesn't allow the playback to be streamed (AirPlay) to other devices that might be capable of recording it.

  • How to AirPlay from MacBook Air iPhoto?

Anybody know how to reproduce a video that has been downloded from iPhone into iPhoto (MacBook Air) to Apple TV?
I recently downloded all videos from my iPhone into my MacBook Air´s iPhoto to free space. When I played the videos on my iPhone, I was able to choose my Apple TV in order to whatch it on my TV.
Now that I have the video on iPhoto, when I play it, Macbook Air does not give the option to reproduce it on Apple TV. Same goes for Youtube and other videos played on my MacBook Air.

Mountain Lion (the next version of OS X) will have Apple TV mirroring built in.  Wait a couple months.

  • Airplay from Ipad to AppleTV gives:  "An error occurred loading this content.  Try again later." message

I am trying to airplay an app that streams episodes of bleach (an anime series),  however it has gives me the error message above.
I have tried soft booting (menu and down button, even restarting via general settings), resetting my Ipad, and setting my DNS on AppleTV to 008.008.008.008
    Nothing has worked
However, I have my Ipad is set up on a VPN, could that be a problem?  Also, i have the third generation Apple TV (not sure if that makes a difference).
    Does anyone have any ideas?
My current Apple TV software is 5.0.2 (4250) and says that it is already up to date.

It's not going to work unless you also have the same country VPN as your iPad is set to. The router that connects to your ATV is going to be your local ISP so different geo IP than what your iDevice through a VPN is spitting out.
To get this to work you need a router that allows VPN directly, then connect this to your ATV and you can AirPlay as much as you want...
    Hope this helps,

  • Airplay from Macbook (Mavericks) to apple tv 2 ends automatically

    Hi,
I have the problem that the streaming form my Macbook Retina 2013 to my apple TV ends automatically after several minutes (appr. 15min)
E.g. I stream spotify or itunes to my apple TV in order to listen to the music on my Hifi System.
Unfortunately, the stream stops after several minutes and my Macbook continues to play the music via its local loadspeaker.
I have tried to change the screensaver and power saving settings, w/o any success. Airplay still ends after several minutes automatically.
I'm pretty sure it's somehow connected to the power saving settings, since when I continue working on my Macbook the streaming won't stop.
Does anybody know which settings I have to change to enable a endless streaming btw. Macbook and apple TV?
Thanks a lot for your help in advance.
    BR
    Tobey

I forgot to say... Airparrot shows up in your system tray after you install. As long as you are on the same network as your Apple TV, just right click the Airparrot icon and select Apple TV as your Airplay device. Voila!
    http://airparrot.com
Then hook up your wireless keyboard and mouse and plop on the couch for some supersized web browsing.

  • Streaming iTunes rented movie with AirPlay  from MacBook Air doesn't show subtitles

In addition: the pictures weren't streamed flawlessly. Sometimes the picture totally disappeared.

Why use Airplay?  You can access the rental under the Computers tab on AppleTV - a new rentals category should appear.

  • Sound but no picture on Apple TV airplay from macbook

    Hi,
To give a little more depth to this. I was working on a presentation on my Samsung TV on airplay connected through Apple TV, I left the room and then the external display had gone blank.
I am able to connect with airplay and sounds can be played through the TV but the screen is blank. I can my Ipad and Iphone to the tv and everything works fine therefore I'm assuming I have somehow managed to sit on my laptop and done something. All software is up to date, running the latest version of Yosemite and as my other devices work I can only assume I have somehow turned off the display on my computer.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Websites and third party Apps need enabling before they will allow AirPlay of Video content. Some Website/App developers have not enabled their products, some simply haven't got around to it yet, others have stated that they won't be enabling AirPlay (likely as a result of licensing issues).

  • Airplay from iMac to AppleTV will only share video, no audio.

I am on Mountain Lion on my iMac, with a new AppleTV. Sometimes screenshare will work, sometimes it will only share video. I can't figure out why it happens, going into Sys Prefs won't let me select audio for AppleTV.

Can you select Apple TV as audio BEFORE you start the mirroring, this is often the problem.
