Airplay/home sharing question

Is it possible to bounce movies contained in my desktop itunes library back and forth from ipad and apple tv?
Say, for instance, I'm on the couch watching a movie and would like to start dinner in the kitchen. Can i take the movie with me on the ipad, picking up on the ipad where i left off from the apple tv? And then pass it back to the apple tv when I'm done cooking to continue watching on the couch again?
I tried doing this the hard way. I would stop the movie on apple tv, browse the shared library from ipad and find the movie and it would start just fine from where i stopped it. But strangely, I'd stop the movie from the ipad, browse apple tv for it and start it again only to find that it's not picking up where i left off from the ipad. It picks up where i stopped the apple tv to begin with, so i need to fast forward through the part that i just watched on the ipad in the other room to get to where i left off on the ipad.
Certainly there must be a better way to just pass the feed from itunes back and forth between multiple devices.
Thanks,
Jeremy

Welcome to the Apple Community.
- When I play music in ITunes on my computer, I want the same thing to play on the Apple TV.
You already seem to know how to do this.
- When I play my itunes music on the Apple TV (via Home Sharing or AirPlay), I want the same thing to play in iTunes on my computer.
This isn't possible.
- I want the pause/play/next track buttons to work on the Apple TV.
Works fine for me.
But if I select a new track on the Apple TV, it goes out-of-sync: the old track continues playing on the computer, and the new one plays on the Apple TV
That's because you can't use your Apple TV to control your computer.

  • Home Sharing Question # 1001

I know there are a lot of Home Sharing questions but haven't found the answer to this.
My wife and I have been able to share movies and music but not apps. She is on a PC and I am on a Mac.Not sure if that would make a difference.

    No answers to this?

  • Home Sharing Questions

    Hello,
I have two questions regarding home sharing while I am on vacation. I understand that if I am not on the same network, I will not have access to my files on my iMac or my PC, however, I do have two questions:
    1. If my iMac and my iPad are signed into the same VPN, will home sharing work if I am on vacation? Both my iMac and my iPad will be signed on to the same server.
    2. I have Xfinity as my Internet provider, and they provide hotspots all over the country that are free for me to use. Since my iMac/PC are on thee Xfinity newtwork, if I sign into the Xfinity hotspot while, say in Maine and my equipment is in Florida, will home sharing work?
My fear is that I must be logged into the same network ID, and they will not be available to me. However, I do have two Network ID's (one is a 2.4Ghz and the other is a 5GHz and they have different names, and Home Sharing does work if my AppleTV is on one and the iMac/PC/iPad is on the other.
The same questions I guess will apply to my AppleTV device, however, if I can get access to my Home Sharing on my iPad, which along with my AppleTV device, I will be bringling with me, I can always change the airplay to play on the AppleTV from my iPad.
Even though I have a WIFI Seagate drive that I use as both a backup and storage for my photos (I am a professional photojournalist) I have all my iTunes files backed up on that device (good thing because if an artist pulls their work from iTunes and you store it Apple's Cloud, it will be deleted) and had I not had a backup, all the Celtic Woman concert videos (close to $60 worth) would be gone
Anyway. thanks for taking your time to read this and considered answering.

PS. These questions are important for me as I plan to spend 3 months every year traveling throughout the country doing street photography and travel photography as I also shoot stock for Getty Images, so if my movies and music are especially my Home Movies (I have instructional videos and PDF files in iBooks that I may need access to) are not going to be available, I would hate to drag my desktop with me. I will take my WIFI drive and use its player to play my music, as while I can change the directories on my iMac to point to the external drive, I do not know of a way to do this on my iPad.
If I get a travel trailer to use instead of staying in hotels, I may just bring my iMac with me. But I really would like to leave it save in my house.

The answer to both questions is no.
It only automatically syncs new purchases from the iTunes Store between devices, and even then only tracks purchased after the option has been turned on. It won't do a catch up sync to start with.
Non iTunes Store purchased tracks have to be imported manually.
You can view all the tracks that are in the source library but not in the target library.
Then select them all and hit the import button.
All that will do though is transfer the music, it will not move playlists, etc.

  • Home Sharing Question

    Hey friends, Happy Canadian Thanksgiving.
I just upgraded to the new iTunes and I am wondering how I can get Home Sharing to allow me share music with my Fiance. We both download a lot of music (all of it purchased from iTunes Music Store) and we have our own separate iTunes Accounts.
How can I get Home Sharing to work so all the music one of us purchases is accessible to the other? If we can only use one iTunes account, we are willing to merge our accounts if there is a way to do that.
    Thanks!! -Juha

Taken from the help content inside iTunes:
*To share your library with other computers:*
Choose iTunes > Preferences, click Sharing, and select “Share my library on my local network.”
Select the items you want to share.
To require users to enter a password before they can see your shared items, select “Require password” and enter a password.
If you choose to share your entire library, its name appears in the iTunes window (below Shared) on other local computers set up to look for shared libraries. To change the name others see, choose iTunes > Preferences, click General, and type a new name in the Library Name field.
    *To turn off sharing:*
Choose iTunes > Preferences and then click Sharing.
Deselect “Share my library on my local network.”
*To import items from other libraries using Home Sharing:*
Choose Advanced > Turn On Home Sharing.
Type your iTunes account name and password, and then click Create Home Share.
Using the same user name and password, repeat steps 1 and 2 on each computer.
To import items from another computer, select the computer (below Shared), and drag items from its library to yours.
To automatically import iTunes Store items that are downloaded to a computer you’re Home Sharing with, select “Automatically import new purchases from [Computer Name].”

  • Home sharing questions....should I Share? Authorize?

A bit confused about Home Sharing (just bought a 2nd gen AppleTV).
We have two Macs in the apt - mine and my girlfriends.
I can start up Home Sharing on the AppleTV (I used my iTunes account as the Home Sharing account), so I can see my Library.
Now I believe if I want to set it up so her library will appear on AppleTV also, I need to start home sharing on her computer. If I set that up I think I need to use the same Home Sharing account as on the AppleTV (my account).
When I try to do this, it says I need to authorize the computer under my account.
So what I am wondering is:
    1. is her computer authorized both under her account and my account? I didn't want to authorize her computer under my account if that is going to wreak havoc. And if I do need to do that, can her computer than still play all the music that she purchase pre-non DRM files?
    2. is her computer "look like" just another computer of mine? So if she purchases a song, for example, is it billed to my account or hers?
    Thanks-

You cannot deauthorize computers to which you do not have access.
There is no need to do this, unless you reach the limit of 5.
Once you reach 5, you can deauthorize all and authorize the computers that are in use.

Why won't my Apple TV recognize any of my devices? Home sharing is turned on and they're all on the same wifi network...also, how do I know if I have a 1st 2nd or 3rd gen Apple TV?

If you have the 3rd Gen Apple TV here is some troubleshotting options.

  • HT4352 Home Sharing Question

I have bought a television series under one Apple ID on my computer. My computer is synced to my apple TV, but under a different Apple ID. Can I still sync that series to the TV even if it was bought under a different Apple ID?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Yes, just make sure it uses the other ID for home sharing.
Add the second account to the Apple TV at settings > iTunes Store and will also be able download and purchase from that account from the cloud.

  • ITunes Home sharing question

If I turn on Home Sharing can I import songs from my current Mac to a new Mac even though some music is imported from CD's? Can someone please tell mw about how long it takes to import 30,000 songs using home sharing?

yes, all kind of files may be copied by homesharing (audio, video, pdf, purchased as well as ripped files)
Can someone please tell mw about how long it takes to import 30,000 songs using home sharing?
not really - depends on the speed of your network connection and the size of those files

  • Another Home Sharing Question

I have 3 computers running Windows 7 or Vista, and iTunes and all have the same account and settings for Home Sharing. Computer A can see computers B and C. B can see A. C can not see either of the other Home Shares. There are no other apparent problems with the network. I can do normal Windows file sharing, access the Internet, etc. The only problem is iTunes Home Sharing.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked your firewalls? I'd try temporarily turning off firewalls and see if you can then access the machines via home sharing, in which case you can then pursue the opening of the appropriate ports as needed. I know having just installed Norton 360 v4, I had to manually open port 3689 on my PC (I did it just for my subnet, just to be safe).

  • Simple Home Sharing Question

I'm sure this is a basic question but I can't seem to find the answer.  Please any help us MUCH appreciated!  Here's the deal... I'm a long time iTunes and iPhone user and have a large music & apps library.  My wife has her own computer and recently got an iPhone... so I set her up using my Apple ID so we could home share.  This worked okay but with the release of iOS5 and iCloud... I'm confused.
My question is... how does iCloud play into this now?  We now have multiple comptuers and iPhones using the same Apple ID... so how does Find My Friend & Find my iPhone work?  How does syncing with iCloud work?  Will it seperate our contacts?
Last question... how would YOU set this up?  I don't want my wife have to repurchase the same music and apps... but she has her own laptop and iPhone.
    Thank you!

I assume that if you are actually using the laptop to stream photos or music to the ATV, then it won't hibernate?
The details of that issue depends on whether or not you've got "wake on network access" enabled. Here's a cut and paste of the info from the relevant troubleshooting document:
    8. Cannot access my library when my computer is asleep
In order for Apple TV to access your library while the host computer is asleep, "Wake for network access" must be turned on.
Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and check (enable) the "Wake for network access" option.
In addition, the network that the host computer and the Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) is connected to must support Wake on Demand feature. This works by partnering with a service running on your AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule called Bonjour Sleep Proxy.

  • HT3819 Home sharing question

I currently have an outdated iTunes on my PC, but it says it isn't able to download the newest iTunes, and I want to transfer all my content to my new laptop, how do I do this? I'm looking for the easiest way possible to sort this issue. Is there any way I can easily move all the content to my laptop?

the appletv see the shared lib of the computer it only! connects with the computers shared lib for the appletv it matters not where the media is stored it gets the data from itunes on the computer you can put it in a nas or on a cd or on a floppy disk it's of no relevance for the appletv it sees only itunes

  • Apple TV 2 Home Sharing depends on Source Device?

So I've been running into an issue with Home Sharing on my Apple TV 2.  This is present on both the 4.2.2 and 4.3.2 firmware. (I own 2 Apple TV 2's. One vanilla and one running FireCore aTV Flash Black)
When attempting to play back video content from my Mac Mini (C2D, 2GB RAM, 2.0Ghz, Mid 2007) I was unable to load any HD content, and SD content was also pretty miserable. I recently discovered this when trying to play Dexter Season 5 HD from my Mac Mini to my Apple TV 2.  Both devices on wi-fi initially.
I tried this both from wired and wireless configurations, I tried switching my Airport Extreme to 5Ghz only, (which my Mac Mini lacks "n"), and no combination of configurations seemed to resolve the issue.
Reluctantly, I decided to try importing the TV Shows to my Macbook Pro (13", 8GB RAM, 2.4Ghz, Mid-2010). What I found was that everything now worked seamlessly.  I tried this wired, wireless, and even went so far as to hook my MBP up to the same network cable my Mac Mini was using to see if it had anything to do with the gigabit switch it was connected to.  In every scenario Home Sharing to my Apple TV 2 from my Macbook Pro worked as designed.
So this got me thinking.  Does the ability/quality to AirPlay/Home Share to the Apple TV 2 depend on the source device?  My CPU nor my RAM on the Mac Mini were ever troubled or maxed out by attempting to stream content to my Apple TV 2. This leads me to believe the only component that could be causing the issue is the GPU. My Mac Mini only has the Intel GMA 950 GPU, my MBP has a NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB.
It makes sense to me that the Apple TV 2 isn't really decoding the video file.  The hardware really isn't there to support decoding video streams. It seems likely to me that the heavy lifting is done by the source device and the transcoded video/audio is simply presented by the ATV2.
Does anyone actually understand the technical workings of AirPlay/Home Sharing?  Perhaps an iOS developer?
If this is the case I'm going to have to start looking to upgrade my Mac Mini.  It's about time anyway, but this would be the final tipping point in my upgrade debate.
P.S.: "Senior" community members who have nothing to contribute should refrain from responding to this thread only to pad their post counts. Legitimate responses only please.

Ok, I'm glad you've said that, now what documentation do you have to back that up? Where in the Apple documentation/support site can you point to backup your claim? Do you tested any configurations that would support your assumptions?
I'd assume that the Apple TV 2 does most of the work, but the evidence I have collected does not support that assumption.
You've just thrown your own response under the bus.  If the video is compressed, and the ATV2 is doing the decompression, you wouldn't need to worry about bandwidth, now would you?
This is EXACTLY why I don't come to the communities/forums anymore.  Every "know-it-all" thinks they have THE answer, but they are just as clueless as everyone else.  The difference being they are chasing a status, and not the true answer to anyone's actual problem or question.
If you would like to continue to dig this hole feel free. I'll take the shovel when you are done.
I've been moderated and banned by this forum before for calling this kind of behaviour out, and I'm sure this will happen yet again.
Does anyone else have documentation, proof, or some other concrete evidence to support how Home Sharing works from a device to the Apple TV 2?

Check your Windows settings along this contribution from Chrism0:

Also check that the ports 5353 and 5354 (Bonjour (mDNSResponder), AirPlay, Home Sharing, Printer Discovery) are open on Windows Firewall.

  • Home Sharing and Airplay: fall 2011 major trouble in iTunes to APTV, IOS devices - detailed run-through.

Dear all, and dear Apple - as you know flagged trouble regarding Home Sharing to devices and to APTV has grown exponentially this fall and it is high time Apple calmly regained control over the situation. Get a grip, this is a fundamental "it just works" reputational issue.
Having read lots of community posts I am struck by how many crosschecks I have done and still cannot get Home Sharing to ´just work´ anymore.
    Symptoms of my troubles include:
    (1) In iTunes the Home Sharing house icon is nowhere to be found on the left hand side even though I have turned it on several times.
    (2) Airplay icon was visible in the lower right corner of iTunes for about two minutes last night but then vanishes.
    (3) My iPhone4S cannot find my shared library (under "More" or anywhere else).
    (4) And APTV will occationally load my Mac library to play a purchased tv episode but is highly unstable. 1 in 4 attempts succesful.
Ah, you say, "this all sounds like your home network is either faulty or the signal is not strong enough", or "you have not set up Home Sharing right".
    OK, let´s see...
The Airport Extreme station is right next to APTV, and is itself connected via ethernet to my router - and besindes my Mac can still find a strong signal via wifi. I access internet on my wifi-only iPad2 easily throughout the house, nice and strong signal. The APTV menu tells me the signal strength is excellent, and, most importantly - it worked a couple of weeks ago with no change in settings. I played my iTunes Library on my iPhone via Home Sharing, and I watched APTV TV episodes streamed from my Mac upstairs.
So far I have triple-checked the following settings:
Home Sharing on my Mac turned on under Advanced? yes. (House icon appears - until I press the "Done" button, then it vanishes).
Even though the House icon is nowhere to be found, is Home Sharing still "On" under iTunes Advanced setting? yes.
Under Preferences, Sharing, all ticks are carefully turned on? yes.
APTV Home Sharing: the same ID details, correctly entered?  yes. And for a little while, or on occation we have access to my library on APTV (but not the other mobile devices). Then it vanishes again (Computer menu on APTV telling me to turn on Home Sharing with ID etc.)
Mobile devices, under Settings/Music, are the Home Sharing details the same as those on your Mac/iTunes? yes.
All software on APTV, iTunes, OIS and Lion up to date? yes, as of 18/12 2011. For iTunes I have 10.5.2 (11)
I also reset Factory Settings on my APTV, which enabled us to watch a TV episode last night, but this morning it is gone again.
Within limits of how many devices I can share my library or iTunes with ? yes, 2 computers are authorised on my ID, and 3 devices are authorised on iCloud (iPad2, iPhone 4S and this Mac).
Have you tried the degrading, not-up-to-Apple-standard way of unplugging APTV/Airport Extreme/Mac power, and restarting your iPad/iPhone4S? Yes.
Does Airplay work from devices to e.g. APTV? yes it does.
Can I access the internet or rent a movie on APTV? yes.
Is this a strength issue with my Mac? Is my Mac fast/strong enough? Yes; it is a 3.06Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, running 8GB/1067 MHz/DDR3. 100GB of available harddrive space.
Dear community - what have I forgotten to do, please? Any ideas?
And Apple: please help your repeat customers with these issues - clearly there are some room for improvement here!?
Regards and best wishes for the Season.

I seem to have a similar problem.  I have a Macbook and a PC, both running the current version of iTunes.  On the APTV (also running the current software version), only my Macbook library shows up under "computers".  Home Sharing is turned on for both and my Macbook library shows up under "Shared" on the PC, but the PC iTunes library doesn't show up on the Macbook or the APTV.
My question then is: How is it that my Macbook iTunes library can show up on the PC and on the APTV, but the PC iTunes library doesn't show up on either?  If the PC can see the shared libraries, doesn't that mean it's on the same network?  Along those same lines, "Shared" libraries do NOT show up on the Macbook.  Again I ask, how is it that I can see the Macbook library on the PC, but the Macbook doesn't show any Shared libraries?
All of this worked just fine before the upgrade to iOS 5 by the way.  I had no issues seeing any library on any devices and the APTV found both computers.
Please help.  This is really annoying!
