Airplay icon missing in iTunes, unable to set up Airport Express

Got a new Mini yesterday, replacing an old underpowered model with a 2.5 Ghz, 4GB, Radeon model for running an HTPC setup. Woo Hoo!
Spent part of yesterday setting everything up. Very easy to do with the Assistant moving old files to new machine. Everything is running great. Strong signal to the new Mac from my Airport Extreme base station.
Except...
I am trying to switch my AIrport Express from being a network extender (not needed with new Mini) to running speakers/headphones in another room using Airplay.
I don't see the Airplay icon in the lower right corner of iTunes, and my AE does not show up in Airport Utility. Home Sharing is on in iTunes. Running newest iTunes 10.5.2. I have read all the support articles, but the missing Airplay icon is the stumper.
Any ideas?

Update: I think I figured out the problem.
1. I had to do a hard reset on the Airport Express to get it to appear in the Airport Utility list of devices. Use a paperclip to push the tiny recessed button on the bottom of the AEX and hold it until the light blinks green several times. This wipes the old settings.
2. Then I had to change the AEX settings from the old setup (WDS network) to the new "Join existing network."
3. The Airplay menu in iTunes appears and disappears depending on whether Airplay devices are detected. This is not in any of the Apple documentation that I could find. The AEX is there now. I choose "Multiple speakers" so music could play thru my regular HT speakers and also upstairs on the AEX.
Hope this helps someone else in the future.

  • Airplay Icon missing from iTunes 11.0.2.26 (PC) and Genius Sidebar

After upgrading to iTunes 11.0.2.26 my Airplay icon is missing. I've tried the simple fix that reportedly works where you switch to mini player, see the Airplay icon and then it stays when you switch to normal mode.
Firstly the icon does appear but it is grayed out and only pops up a volume control. It does not detect, display, or allow you to select output devices, Second, it is still missing from the normal size window.
This has been tried with and without restarting iTunes as well as reinstalling iTunes. I'd go for a downgrade but then it fails to work with the new iPads at all. I discovered that with my first iPad mini where it required an iTunes upgrade.
    Genious Sidebar
I figured Id just downgrade to 10.6.3 to get the genius sidebar back afterwards. WRONG, it will not synch or do anything without the newer versions of the iTunes software. Genius sidebar was the best thing about the software and they kept taking it away, brought it back for a few versions, then took it away again. It was and remains my favorite way to shop for new music. The remaining so called genius functions are just plain lame.
Airplay Icon Missing from Itunes on PC
I can hit my Airplay devices such as Apple TV and Zeppelin Air with iPads, iPods, and iPhones. Just not from the PC Console where is previously enjoyed it the most. So I know the devices are fine. They are all on the same physical wired and wireless network. Even when I put the Zeppelin on the wired LAN there is no Airplay icon in iTunes on the PC.

  • List of solutions for airplay icon missing in iTunes 11 (windows)

It seems like there are a lot of problems out there with airplay and iTunes 11.  I think it would be great if Apple or someone were to make some sort of diagnostic tool for airplay.
I am starting this thread in an attempt to collect some of the various solutions to the airplay problems.  Hopefully, other members of the community will add other solutions that they are aware of.
Problem: Can't find the airplay icon in iTunes 11 for windows
    1) make sure you are looking in the right place.  The icon will appear to the right of the volume slider in the normal iTunes view.  If iTunes can't find any airplay devices, this icon will not be present and the area will just be blank.
    2) For me (iTunes 11.0.5.5), I did some system work in Windows 8 64-bit, and installed AdAware, and uninstalled it.  I think this reset my firewall settings.  The airplay icon was missing from iTunes but I was able to do airplay from my iPad over the network.  I searched the start menu for "firewall", started "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security", and in the Inbound Rules list I saw that I had 5 entries that started with "Airport".  2 of them were disabled.  I double clicked on each disabled rule, and changed the action from "Block the connection" to "Allow the connection".  After hitting ok and doing this for both blocked rules, I restarted iTunes and the airplay icon appeared and everything works fine.
    3) A popular solution which has worked for me in the past has been to switch the program to miniplayer view.  There you will hopefully see an airplay icon.  Some people say you should select each of the entries in the airplay list here in order to get them to "stick."  When you switch back to normal view, the airplay icon should remain visible.
    4) I have seen someone update their dd wrt (open source based) router firmware and had the problem go away.
    5) Some have had luck unplugging their airplay device (ie: receiver) for a few minutes and then plugging it back in.
Please add to this list if you can!

    Windows 7 64bit
    iTunes 11.1.2.32
Apple TV (New Shape) / Airport Express 3rd Gen.
I've had the issue of no Airplay button for the past few weeks. Strangely, it appeared randomly, but never stuck around for too long before disappearing. However, from reading this thread i uninstalled my wireless driver, and reinstalled from a generic windows search, and also installed Apple's Bonjour service (did this one after the other) and restarted my machine. All seems fine now, and the airplay button is there.
Thank you all so much for your inputs in helping get a resolution. I hope this works for everyone else with the issue.

  • Airplay icon missing in itunes windows solution

I have had trouble with itunes having the airplay icon show up. I use the remote app on ipad and was having trouble with it finding my iTunes library. I could play content on apple tv and stream from ipad to TV but the issue with the remote app not working and the icon simply being gone from itunes was driving me crazy. I tried the switch to mini player and the close the program and then start up and sometimes it would show up but after installing the newest version of itunes on the 18th it was gone. I made sure all the obvious things were right like having home sharing on both itunes and the device i was using, connected to the same wifi and not a guest account, updated router firmware, rebooted router, etc. Wouldnt come back up at all. Tried everything and then found something that worked and now can close out program and bring iTunes back up  and works everytime. I am using windows 7. I hope this might help someone who had the same problem I had.
    1) open control panel.
    2)Choose Network and internet
3)Select the VIEW NETWORK STATUS TASKS under NETWORK and SHARING CENTER section
    4) Choose the active network connection. It is usually name " wireless Network Connection 1" or something similiar.
    5) Click the properties button
    6) If the Internet PROTOCOL VERSION 6(TCP/IPv6) is checked, uncheck it, then click OK.
    7) Click CLOSE
    8) Restart iTunes and try to use the Home Sharing feature again.

Thank you. This solution works perfect.

  • Airplay Icon Missing in iTunes for Mac

If I use my apple tv then try to use itunes on my mac, the blue airplay icon switches from blue to orange. If I select the blue dots next to each of my airplay devices each line item device disappears. Once they're all gone the orange icon disappears entirely and I'm left with a grey area in itunes where the airplay icon normally is. I must restart itunes to get it back. I've had this issue sporadically for a few updates of itunes but with the latest update it now seems to happen every time. Does anyone know how to fix this?
It may be unrelated but playing internet radio stations that I've saved to playlists also makes the airplay icon disappear. I now must go to the full internet radio drop down menu to select a station to be able to play it over airplay.
I'm using the latest itunes, OS X, and all devices are updated. I've reset SMC and PRAM.
    Thanks.

  • Airtunes/Airplay not working in iTunes 9.2.1 via Airport Express (2012 model)

I bought an Airport Express device the other day specifically to stream music from my Macs to my stereo.
After installing the device I played a bit of music on a Mac running Lion. No problem at all.
However, I own an old Powerbook G4 1.5 GHz as well. This laptop runs 10.4.11 because Leopard is just too much to handle for this old laptop.
So, I tried to test the Airport Express. I can see the speakers in iTunes 9.2.1 but when I try to click the speakers iTunes "hesitates" just a little bit and reverts to "Computer".
Has anyone ever encountered this problem?
Is there a fix? (Besides making my laptop unusable by upgrading to Leopard?)

If I read the specifications correctly, both the second generation (aka, "802.11n (1st generation )) and third generation (aka, "802.11n (2nd generation )) AirPort Express do not support Airtunes on OS v10.5.6 and earlier.
    AirPort Express - Technical Specifications
AirPort Express 802.11n (1st Generation) - Technical Specifications
AirPort Express 802.11n (2nd Generation) - Technical Specifications
    Frustrating indeed.

  • Airplay icon missing using Remote app

I have an iphone 5, a 3th generation apple tv and an receiver Pionner Airplay compatible.
The apple tv plays streaming my music library stored on iTunes Match.
The songs are selected via the Remote app installed on my iPhone5.
While using Remote app, I can not send music from the ATV3 to the receiver Pioneer because the Airplay icon does not appear.
    I also made these tests:
If I use the remote control of the ATV3 instead of the Remote app, I see and I select the Pioneer among the members Airplay compatible
If I use the Remote app to control iTunes server installed on a PC instead of ATV3, Airplay icon appears correctly and I see the Pioneer among the components Airplay compatible.
    In conclusion:
Airplay functionality working correctly between ATV3 and  receiver Pioneer only if I use the remote control of the ATV3, but does not work if I use the Remote app from the iPhone 5 (Airplay icon missing).
    Any idea?

I've just bought an Apple TV yesterday and what a surprise to find this behavior as well. I use the remote app for everything about the Apple TV but swapping left and right to adjust the volume of the Airplay speakers doesn't work, so I need to use the physical remote only for that. Hope it's a bug that will be corrected. Doesn't make sense.

  • ITunes (and Airfoil) can see Airport Express but can't connect in Windows XP (error -15000) - firewall problems?

I am using Windows XP Professional 2002 w/ SP3 on a Dell Latitude E4300 laptop wirelessly connecting to my Airport Express 802.11n (firmware 7.5.2).
I can see my Airport Express in iTunes 10.4.1 and can select it via the Airplay button. iTunes even detects whether or not a speaker is connected to the Airport Express. But when iTunes tries to connect, it comes back after a while saying "An error occurred while connecting to the Airplay device xxx. An unknown error occurred (error -15000)."
A similar problem happens with Airfoil from Rogue Amoeba that I use to stream music from other apps such as VideoLAN to Airport Express on the same laptop. I can see that my Airport Express is available but when Airfoil tries to connect, it comes back saying "It appears that a firewall on this computer is preventing Airfoil from connecting to xxx Airport Express. Please check your firewall settings and try again."
I've set both Airplay and iTunes as exception programs in my Windows Firewall setting, and even added TCP ports 5000 to 5005 and UDP ports 6000 to 6005 to the exceptions as recommended by Airfoil. I've also disabled Symantec Endpoint Protection that Ihave installed. The only thing I can't disable is McAfee Endpoint Encryption, since I also use the laptop at work and I don't have permission to disableMcAfee.  I use this laptop to connect wirelessly with other devices such as HP wireless printers, NAS drives and other laptops on my home network and have never had any issues, so i think that this issue is specific to the Airplay software being blocked by some firewall (I am assuming Airfoil also uses Airplay).
I've tried this on different wireless networks and I have the same issue with Windows XP on my Dell Latitude E4300. I've also set up the network with no security, but the problem doesn't go away.
I also tried downgrading iTunes to 10.3.1 but won't work. I think it's an Airplay issue, not a specific iTunes issue, since I'm facing the problem with Airfoil as well.
How do I trace what is going on that is preventing iTunes and Airfoil from streaming to the AirportExpress within Windows XP?
I also have another Dell Inspiron laptop on the same network running on Windows Vista, and have no problems streaming music from iTunes or Airfoil to the Airport Express on the same network, even when the network is WPA-2 Personal (TKIP+AES) protected (I've seen other postings where WPA has been an issue, WEP has not, but in my case, this is not an issue). Ditto with my iPad2.
    Thanks for your help!

I have the same problem with Windows 7 64bit. ITune can see AE and stream Music well. Airfoil, TuneBlade (airplay soft) can also see AE but can't connect and stream music. I ' ve already tried to setup firewall Exception list, even turning off firewall off both windows and antivirus but still got the same problem with the message 'Airfoil was unable to connect to the remote speaker " ... 's Airport Express". Please check the firewall on the computer where " ...'s Airport Express" is running and try again'. Any help would be appreciated !.

  • Problems Setting-up Airport Express to Play Music thru External Speakers

    Hi:
I have an HP dv6500z laptop connected to an HP printer C6280 via LinkSys wireless network using the LinkSys 54G router and PrintServer. It works fine.
I purchased an Apple Airport Express and want to connect it to this network so that I can play songs from within iTunes through external powered speakers wirelessly. The powered speakers are connected to the Airport Express (AE).
The AE is plugged into the AC outlet and the speakers are turned on. The AE is roughly 10 feet away from the laptop/router, just across the room. The AE's
LED is flashing amber (It does not yet recognize the network). I installed the Airport Utility from the enclosed CD, downloaded all patch upgrades and it installed successfully.
Now, how do I tell the Airport Utility to recognize and connect to my existing LinkSys network, so that the AE recognizes it ? The instructions are not clear on this note...they say to run the Airport Utility and then follow the on-screen instructions. The instructions tell you that you will lose your wireless network connection if you continue...and you do if you try.
The same information comes up if you try to do a manual install.
How do I connect the AE to an existing network ? This information seems to be missing. If I go to the AirPort Utility Help and search and search on Setting Up AirPort Express, it tells me the following:
Connect your stereo or powered speakers to your AirPort Express using the mini-jack on the top side of your AirPort Express, and then plug your AirPort Express into a wall outlet.
Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a computer using Mac OS, and in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a computer using Windows.
Click Music in the toolbar, and select the Enable AirTunes checkbox.
Problem: What Music in What toolbar ? I do not see this...
Enter an iTunes speaker name and password. This is the name displayed in the pop-up menu at the bottom of the iTunes window.
Problem: Where does this information come from
If you're setting up your AirPort Express for the first time, choose Assist Me from the Base Station menu and follow the onscreen instructions.
It seems like something is missing from the setup.
Aaah...Just for the heck of it, I went under Base Station > Assist Me
and told it to continue even though the dialog box said it would change the network.
It displayed a tabbed dialog box where I could configure the AirPort Express, including a tab named Music.
    Note:
The following two items are listed in Apple's on-line Help inside of Airport Utility, and on the web, yet I did not see them inside of Airport Utility when trying t oconfigure my AE.
I did not see a checkbox to check, named Enable AirTunes.
I did not see any place for entering the name and password for my speakers.
I followed all of the instructions and things looked like they were going well until I clicked Finish.
Them it said something like it could not save the settings..try again.
Well, I did, but when I brought Airport Utility back up, it kept saying that it could not detect the AE,
and when I went under the Base Station menu, all items were grayed-out, so I couldn't do anything.
Please help... the instructions need to clearer and more detailed.
    Thanx, Dale
HP dv 6500z Windows Vista New Airport Express

    Hi:
    Thanx for your reply.
After several more hours of trial & error over the weekend,
I finally have the Green Light (LED) on the Airport Express.
And it stays green, even if I unplug it from the AC outlet,
and plug it back in later. I have the green light so this
tells me that I have gotten past one hurdle.
OK...in order to get this far, I had the AE wired to the
laptop or LinkSys router via an Ethernet cable. How do
I go about making this a "wireless" connection. LinkSys
told me how to take my laptop from a hardwired connection
to wireless, but it doesn't address the issue when you have
a 3rd party device hardwired that you want to make wireless.
    Side Note:
I have not tried this yet, but I found a note on the web that
stated something like this: after getting the green light,
this guy then disconnected the Ethernet cable from the AE,
unplugged the AE from AC power for a few minutes, plugged it
back in to AC power, and voila! ... he was wirelessly on his network.
OK...let's assume that my AE is now on the wireless network.
What type of special settings do I need to make inside of iTunes
in order to get sound to the speakers.
I have my powered speakers recognized by iTunes...I can select them.
But, it appears that something may be blocking my AE from talking to
my network...I keep getting a pop-up box from Symantec saying that it
is detecting a "virus" (for lack of a better term) at the IP address
that I set my AE to. Oh, yes...that's another question...
When manually setting up the AE, I have my router network's IP address
(dotted-quad) in the list of parameter settings, but...near the top of
the list, the Airport Utility software asks for your AE's IP.
Well, what is it ? Nobody has told me ... Where do I get it from ???
Or...do I assign an arbitrary value to it based on the dotted-quad below ?
The router has an IP address of something like 192.168.1.xyz. I know what
the xyz is for the router but, what number do I use here for the AE, or
does it matter as long as it isn't being used by another network device.
    My network is static.
So, after using a number not used by my network elsewhere (that I am aware of,
and...inserting a $ (to specify hexadecimal format)in front of my encryption password, NOT the router password (they intermix the naming of these) I finally managed to get the Green Light on the AE. Note: I am using the WEP-64 bit encryption which is also refered to a "40 bit" (No..not hexadecimal..$40 = 64) which is 40-bit to which a random 24 bit is added to give you 64 bit encryption.
    To summarize;
I appear to have the AE configured via hardwire (I have the green light).
In iTunes, I can see and select my powered-speakers from the drop-down menu in the lower right corner, but i am s not yet streaming (hearing) the music.
It appears that Symantic may be knocking me off the network, or not letting the AE talk to the laptop/router...I have not yet tried this, but another nugget that I found on this site says to go to System Preferences (where?), click on the Firewalls tab, click Advanced , and uncheck "Block UDP Traffic".
Is this what may be blocking my AE talking to the laptop/router ?
Any help/feedback would be appreciated...Thank you.
I'm getting close...but no cigar (yet).

  • Streaming music from iTunes 09 (Snow Leopard) to AirPort Express

Hi! I'm an elementary music teacher who travels to several schools. To make my life simpler, I set up airport express base express stations in my schools. This way, I don't have to worry about plugging and unplugging cables and running cables all over the room. Until my update to Snow Leopard and iTunes 9, this worked flawlessly! Now, I have major audio problems! I end up changing the channel and updating on my basestations, and that only solves the problem sometimes. On an "unofficial" Apple forum I found a post that mentions selecting "Multiple Speakers" to solve the problem, by streaming the music as well as playing it through the speakers on my MacBook Pro. Again, it only helps sometimes. Does anyone have a work around? I spoke with Apple Tech Support a few nights ago. They had me reset the PRAM and some other things, but that didn't help either. I don't suppose there's a way I could get iTunes 8 back on my machine either... Any help or suggestions anyone has would be greatly appreciated! Also, is there some way to let APple know directly this is a problem that they need to get an update to fix?
    Thanks!
    Paul

    it doesn't work with mp3 either ...
i can't stream music from my iMac G5 (10.5.8, iTunes 10.2.1) and from my macbook pro (10.6.7., iTunes 10.2.1). I tryed two diffrent Airport Express Stations, both reseted just to be sure and non of them can't connect with iTunes. iTunes tries to connect and after several minutes it just gives up.
    Airplay via iPhone works !

  • After iTunes update, cannot play through Airport Express

I've had this problem a few times.
You've updated iTunes and you can see your remote speaker(s) within the program, but when you attempt to stream to them, you'll get an error saying that there was a probelm connecting to your remote speakers. No amount of resetting or reconfiguring your Airports will fix it. Don't waste your time doing that.
A good check to show that your network \ airport is healthy, is if you have an iPod Touch you can stream right from there to your Airport Express. That will let you know that the problem lies somewhere on your computer.
You are most likely having this problem because of the Windows Firewall. A quick check is to disable your Windows Firewall, then launch iTunes and try to stream. If that works, you've found your problem. Reenable your firewall.
.....But wait. I checked my allowable programs, and iTunes.exe is allowed to pass? What gives? Well, the firewall is trying to make the console simple, and only lists the program as itunes.exe. Apparently, the firewall is looking at much more than just the process ID of itunes.exe. When the rule was set up, it likely also identified the allowable process by noting the time\date stamp or a hash of the file. During your upgrade, the filename stays the same, but the rest changes, and the windows firewall won't allow it to pass.
To fix this, delete the existing rule allowing itunes.exe to pass. Once that's done, you can recreate the rule using your new itunes.exe file. Now that it's allowing your new .exe to pass through the firewall, you can now play to your remote speakers again. Yeah, you don't HAVE to delete the old one, but it's a lot cleaner. If you don't delete the old, you won't know which is the "good" one if you ever have to troubleshoot at a later date.
I hope this helps. It drove me a touch nuts for a bit until I realized what was going on. Now it's part of my routine whenever I update iTunes.

    Darryl Rehr wrote:
I have configured and re-configured my Airport Express, but I can't get it to receive music from iTunes.
iTunes does recognize presence of Airport Express (named "Stereo Cabinet").
However, when I select "Stereo Cabinet" in the pulldown menu, all I get is reduced volume output through my computer speakers... not through the stereo system hooked up the to the Airport Express.
I've had this problem for months... posted here some time ago, but got no response.
I am running 10.6.2 on an Intel Core duo Macbook laptop. This function used to work just fine, and I can't figure out why it no longer does. I think I had the same trouble under 10.5... but my attempts to figure it out were only sporadic (busy life, you know?).
    Can anyone help?
    DR
sorry if i ask the obvious but have you enabled airtunes like so ?

  • Trouble setting up Airport Express and Windows

I am trying to help a friend set up Airport Express to work with her Windows computer. The goal is to use the Airport Express so she can stream iTunes to her stereo system. There is an existing Linksys wireless network. First I tried to connect add the Airport Express to her existing wireless network. I was able to see the base station and I chose to add it to her existing network. I was able to go through all the steps updating the Airport Express. After the base station restarted, the configuration tool couldn't see the base station anymore. In iTunes on her Windows computer, I could see the base station but when I clicked to select the speakers, it wouldn't select.
I reset the Airport Express to factory settings and tried again with the same result.
I reset again and tried using the Airport Express to replace her wireless network and to also stream iTunes. In the configuration app I chose to create a new wireless network. I was able to set up the Airport Express as a wireless network and could connect her Windows laptop to the Internet through the Airport Express. But I had the same problem in iTunes: I could see the speakers in the drop down list, but I couldn't select them.
I've returned everything to how it was (Linksys wireless network).
Can anyone let me know how to make this work?
    Thanks

As I mentioned in my post, I followed the directions exactly. I used the same set of directions in the previous post. At the last step of the set up, the Airport Express restarts. After restarting, I got an error saying the utility could not find the base station. I reset the Airport Express to factory settings and went through the steps again and had the exact same result.
I am using an Airport Express at home with a Linksys router and I had no problem setting it up to join my network. The only difference is that I use a Mac at home. The one I am trying to set up for my friend is with a Windows XP machine.
Has anyone ever had this problem?

  • Problems setting up AirPort Express Base Station

I'm a real newbie at this, so pardon the ignorance in advance haha.
I just bought a new Airport Express base station. I wanted to be able to stream my music via iTunes to my living room. I'm just having problems getting the aiport utility to recognize the base station. I have the base station plugged in and everything. Right now it is flashing the amber light.
This is my set-up. I have a Netgear WGR614 54MBPS wireless G router connected to my broadband modem. From the router I have it connected to my desktop thats running windows xp pro. The network is up and running just fine. I can connect via any laptop or other device with wifi. Now, how do I get my wireless router to pick up the base station? Do I have to wrong idea here or something? haha. thanks in advance!

In the Airport Utility for your Airport Express, you should set the Airport Express in "client" mode. You might have to connect your Airport Express directly to your router with ethernet cable, while doing this. If you are using encryption, make sure that you enter the encryption number onto the express that your router/access point is using. Again, if you plug the Express directly into the router, you should be able to modify the settings quite easily. Once you unplug the express, it will blink orange for awhile (maybe a minute), so wait a bit.
    Good luck.

  • I set up Airport Express as Client, I can no longer connect to my wlan

I set up Airport Express in Client mode so that I could use Airtunes. My Router/modem is a netgear one and I use WPA.
I can no longer connect to my wireless network from my ibook.
If I plug in the ethernet to the router I can. I can also then see from the router that Airport express has connected itself to the router.
So what do I have to do to be able to reconnect to myibook to the WLAN?
