Airplay icon missing on MBP

I have a 15" retina macbook pro and a 3-gen appletv, the home sharing, airplay mirroring fuction works fine until I recently switched to another high-speed internet (another router).
The airplay icon now only appear on my mbp after I reboot either router or appletv, but it will soon disappear a few minutes later. The weird part is, if I mirror my mbp to the appletv when the airplay icon appear, the function will continue even later on the airplay icon disappear (meaning mbp is still mirroring to appletv but the icon is gone). Furthermore, my iphone remote app can't detect either itunes or appletv at this point.
Before you guys start asking me back questions:
1. Reset & restore appletv did not help
2. All my devices filmware are up-to-date
3. Troubleshooting doesn't help a single bit
4. I had set IPv6 off, but it did not help either
5. I've done the port forward thingy on my router
6. Yes I had connected all my devices to the same network
7. I had tried to disable-enable home sharing, airplay but still no luck
8. Reboot router only work for mostly 20 mins and the airplay icon will disappear again
9. Using ethernet cable is not an option here, however the wifi signal is strong for both appletv & mbp
Basically I am frustrated and helpless with the problem after tried out all the solution I can find on google. The only problem I can think of is the router, because the problem doesn't occur with the old internet (old router). Can you guys please help me out? Do I really need to invest in one of the apple router?

What port forwarding thing, there is no need to forward any ports.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

  • Airplay Icon missing from iTunes 11.0.2.26 (PC) and Genius Sidebar

After upgrading to iTunes 11.0.2.26 my Airplay icon is missing. I've tried the simple fix that reportedly works where you switch to mini player, see the Airplay icon and then it stays when you switch to normal mode.
Firstly the icon does appear but it is grayed out and only pops up a volume control. It does not detect, display, or allow you to select output devices, Second, it is still missing from the normal size window.
This has been tried with and without restarting iTunes as well as reinstalling iTunes. I'd go for a downgrade but then it fails to work with the new iPads at all. I discovered that with my first iPad mini where it required an iTunes upgrade.
    Genious Sidebar
I figured Id just downgrade to 10.6.3 to get the genius sidebar back afterwards. WRONG, it will not synch or do anything without the newer versions of the iTunes software. Genius sidebar was the best thing about the software and they kept taking it away, brought it back for a few versions, then took it away again. It was and remains my favorite way to shop for new music. The remaining so called genius functions are just plain lame.
Airplay Icon Missing from Itunes on PC
I can hit my Airplay devices such as Apple TV and Zeppelin Air with iPads, iPods, and iPhones. Just not from the PC Console where is previously enjoyed it the most. So I know the devices are fine. They are all on the same physical wired and wireless network. Even when I put the Zeppelin on the wired LAN there is no Airplay icon in iTunes on the PC.

  • Airplay icon missing using Remote app

I have an iphone 5, a 3th generation apple tv and an receiver Pionner Airplay compatible.
The apple tv plays streaming my music library stored on iTunes Match.
The songs are selected via the Remote app installed on my iPhone5.
While using Remote app, I can not send music from the ATV3 to the receiver Pioneer because the Airplay icon does not appear.
    I also made these tests:
If I use the remote control of the ATV3 instead of the Remote app, I see and I select the Pioneer among the members Airplay compatible
If I use the Remote app to control iTunes server installed on a PC instead of ATV3, Airplay icon appears correctly and I see the Pioneer among the components Airplay compatible.
    In conclusion:
Airplay functionality working correctly between ATV3 and  receiver Pioneer only if I use the remote control of the ATV3, but does not work if I use the Remote app from the iPhone 5 (Airplay icon missing).
    Any idea?

I've just bought an Apple TV yesterday and what a surprise to find this behavior as well. I use the remote app for everything about the Apple TV but swapping left and right to adjust the volume of the Airplay speakers doesn't work, so I need to use the physical remote only for that. Hope it's a bug that will be corrected. Doesn't make sense.

  • Airplay icon missing in iTunes, unable to set up Airport Express

Got a new Mini yesterday, replacing an old underpowered model with a 2.5 Ghz, 4GB, Radeon model for running an HTPC setup. Woo Hoo!
Spent part of yesterday setting everything up. Very easy to do with the Assistant moving old files to new machine. Everything is running great. Strong signal to the new Mac from my Airport Extreme base station.
    Except...
I am trying to switch my AIrport Express from being a network extender (not needed with new Mini) to running speakers/headphones in another room using Airplay.
I don't see the Airplay icon in the lower right corner of iTunes, and my AE does not show up in Airport Utility. Home Sharing is on in iTunes. Running newest iTunes 10.5.2. I have read all the support articles, but the missing Airplay icon is the stumper.
    Any ideas?

Update: I think I figured out the problem.
    1. I had to do a hard reset on the Airport Express to get it to appear in the Airport Utility list of devices. Use a paperclip to push the tiny recessed button on the bottom of the AEX and hold it until the light blinks green several times. This wipes the old settings.
    2. Then I had to change the AEX settings from the old setup (WDS network) to the new "Join existing network."
    3. The Airplay menu in iTunes appears and disappears depending on whether Airplay devices are detected. This is not in any of the Apple documentation that I could find. The AEX is there now. I choose "Multiple speakers" so music could play thru my regular HT speakers and also upstairs on the AEX.
Hope this helps someone else in the future.

  • ITunes Airplay Icon Missing (iTunes 12, Windows 8.1)

    Hi, all.
I'm new to the forum and did search for this topic, but most items I found were for 2013 and 2014.
I just updated to iTunes 12.1.1.4 and run Windows 8.1. I have an Apple TV in the media room, Apple Airport Express hooked up to a speaker in the living room, and an iHome iW1 speaker in the kitchen on my network.
On my iPad Air 2, I can see:
    - Apple TV
    - Airport Express
    - iHome iW1
On my iPhone 6, I can see:
    - Apple TV
    - Airport Express
On my Windows machine, I can see:
    - Nothing. There is no Airplay icon.
I'm willing to write off the iPhone issue. The iHome product has always been a bit buggy requiring way more restarts/resets than I thought was reasonable. But the Windows missing Airplay icon is maddening. It's the only way to broadcast music to more than one speaker in my pseudo-Sonos setup.
I've tried various fixes (restarts, modem restarts, IPv6/IPv4 switch on & off) with no luck. Anyone else experiencing this problem and/or have a suggested fix? Thanks!

    Hey tomfrombothell,
I understand that you are experiencing some issues with your ability to AirPlay from iTunes on your PC. I do have some suggestions for you regarding this issue that can be found in the following article:

  • List of solutions for airplay icon missing in iTunes 11 (windows)

It seems like there are a lot of problems out there with airplay and iTunes 11.  I think it would be great if Apple or someone were to make some sort of diagnostic tool for airplay.
I am starting this thread in an attempt to collect some of the various solutions to the airplay problems.  Hopefully, other members of the community will add other solutions that they are aware of.
Problem: Can't find the airplay icon in iTunes 11 for windows
    1) make sure you are looking in the right place.  The icon will appear to the right of the volume slider in the normal iTunes view.  If iTunes can't find any airplay devices, this icon will not be present and the area will just be blank.
    2) For me (iTunes 11.0.5.5), I did some system work in Windows 8 64-bit, and installed AdAware, and uninstalled it.  I think this reset my firewall settings.  The airplay icon was missing from iTunes but I was able to do airplay from my iPad over the network.  I searched the start menu for "firewall", started "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security", and in the Inbound Rules list I saw that I had 5 entries that started with "Airport".  2 of them were disabled.  I double clicked on each disabled rule, and changed the action from "Block the connection" to "Allow the connection".  After hitting ok and doing this for both blocked rules, I restarted iTunes and the airplay icon appeared and everything works fine.
    3) A popular solution which has worked for me in the past has been to switch the program to miniplayer view.  There you will hopefully see an airplay icon.  Some people say you should select each of the entries in the airplay list here in order to get them to "stick."  When you switch back to normal view, the airplay icon should remain visible.
    4) I have seen someone update their dd wrt (open source based) router firmware and had the problem go away.
    5) Some have had luck unplugging their airplay device (ie: receiver) for a few minutes and then plugging it back in.
Please add to this list if you can!

    Windows 7 64bit
    iTunes 11.1.2.32
Apple TV (New Shape) / Airport Express 3rd Gen.
I've had the issue of no Airplay button for the past few weeks. Strangely, it appeared randomly, but never stuck around for too long before disappearing. However, from reading this thread i uninstalled my wireless driver, and reinstalled from a generic windows search, and also installed Apple's Bonjour service (did this one after the other) and restarted my machine. All seems fine now, and the airplay button is there.
Thank you all so much for your inputs in helping get a resolution. I hope this works for everyone else with the issue.

  • Airplay icon missing on iMac after installing airport extreme

Can't get my iMac to display the airplay icon after changing to the AirPort Extreme wireless router.
    Previous Setup:
Cable Modem ->LinkSys Wireless Router -> AirPort Express for Home Stereo access using Airplay
Accessed Airplay from iPhone 5S, iPad, iMac - all worked
    NEW Setup:
Replaced old wireless router with Airport Extreme
Cable Modem -> Airport Extreme -> Airport Express for Airplay on home speaker system
Airport Utility (v 6.3.2) see's both the Airport Extreme and the Airport Express
The Airport Express is in Network Mode of :Join a wireless network.  My AirPort Extreme wifi network is Why Phi
    The Airplay option is selected
My iMac does not see the airplay option in the menu bar.
Note:  The Airplay icon used to show up on my iMac before I had the AirPort Extreme.
My iPhone 5s see's the AirPort Express for airplay, and plays the music fine.
The display for my iMac is flagged to show for AirPlay but it doesn't see any devices.
If you know what I have missed, please let me know!  I loved the AirPlay option from my iMac, and would really like to get it back!

The AirPlay icon within iTunes appears when iTunes "discovers" that an active AirPlay-ready "speaker" is available on the network. In this case the speaker would be your AirPort Express base station.
It may be possible that the Express has not properly joined the Wi-Fi network provided by the new Extreme base station.
Anytime you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of that hardware. Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Please post back your results.

  • IOS8: why is the airplay icon missing from embedded web video players?

Can someone explain to me why the airplay icon that used to reside in the lower right hand corner of videos played inside safari or youtube or amblify is now gone? The only way I can use airplay is to mirror my whole phone from the control center which is kind of annoying. not to mention instead of my photos screensaver passing through when using amblify with my stereo and philips Hue, my guests have to look at the control panel for amblify. This is extremely annoying, is this a glitch or is this how iOS8 is supposed to function? ?f I am reading an article on my phone and I come upon a video related to the article its a lot easier to press that button than to have to mirror the whole phone from the control center . . .

    Hi Mr Sheppard,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
In iOS 8, the AirPlay icon () should still appear in the lower right hand corner of videos you play on your iPhone. This function is not currently working as expected on your device, and I know that causes frustration.
To troubleshoot the situation, I recommend the steps in this article:

  • Airplay icon missing in itunes windows solution

I have had trouble with itunes having the airplay icon show up. I use the remote app on ipad and was having trouble with it finding my iTunes library. I could play content on apple tv and stream from ipad to TV but the issue with the remote app not working and the icon simply being gone from itunes was driving me crazy. I tried the switch to mini player and the close the program and then start up and sometimes it would show up but after installing the newest version of itunes on the 18th it was gone. I made sure all the obvious things were right like having home sharing on both itunes and the device i was using, connected to the same wifi and not a guest account, updated router firmware, rebooted router, etc. Wouldnt come back up at all. Tried everything and then found something that worked and now can close out program and bring iTunes back up  and works everytime. I am using windows 7. I hope this might help someone who had the same problem I had.
    1) open control panel.
    2)Choose Network and internet
3)Select the VIEW NETWORK STATUS TASKS under NETWORK and SHARING CENTER section
    4) Choose the active network connection. It is usually name " wireless Network Connection 1" or something similiar.
    5) Click the properties button
    6) If the Internet PROTOCOL VERSION 6(TCP/IPv6) is checked, uncheck it, then click OK.
    7) Click CLOSE
    8) Restart iTunes and try to use the Home Sharing feature again.

Thank you. This solution works perfect.

  • AirPlay icon missing

    hi,
I can`t find the AirPly icon on my iPod touch 4g.iOS 5.01.
    Using Apple TV second Generation.
    Any help?
    Thanks,
    Amnon

I have the same problem (no Airplay icon on iPad2) but a different networking setup.  I'm wondering if that could be causing a problem of if it's even supported.
    Setup:
I'm on Verizon FIOS so must use the Verizon Router.  But to get house-wide wireless working, I have the wireless turned off on the Verizon Router and a centrally located Linksys router connected to the Verizon router.  I have wireless access through the Linksys router and also wired access to my Mac and two AppleTV2s through the Linksys router as well.  This all works fine.  The ATVs see iTunes on the Mac and my iPad2 and iPod Touch have internet access wirelessly all through the Linksys router.  I've also used the Remote application on the IPod Touch to control music play on iTunes.
Sofware on the iPad2 and both ATVs is current.
Since I don't show an Airplay icon on the iPad2, I'm wondering if Airplay even works if the AppleTVs are using a WIRED connection to the Mac running iTunes?
If Airplay does work in this environment, I'm wondering if there is some Linksys router settings (firewall?  other?) that needs to be tweaked to let Airplay work?
Note that I'm not exactly a networking expert (or a compter expert either).
    Any help/suggestions appreciated.

  • Airplay icon missing? first time set up

first time setting up apple tv. air play icon missing from my ipad 2, also the remote is controling my mac book. please help

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Make sure your iPad and Apple TV have the latest software and restart the io ad if necessary.
If you don't want to use a remote with your computer the easiest thing to do is just to turn the IR off. (System_Preferences/Security/General)
If you still want to use your computer remote then you must pair your computers remote with the computer AND the Apple TV remote with the Apple TV.
To pair a remote with a device hold down the menu and FF buttons together for six seconds or until you see a chain icon on screen (best take the computer into another room, or turn it off, when you do this)

  • Airplay Icon Missing in iTunes for Mac

If I use my apple tv then try to use itunes on my mac, the blue airplay icon switches from blue to orange. If I select the blue dots next to each of my airplay devices each line item device disappears. Once they're all gone the orange icon disappears entirely and I'm left with a grey area in itunes where the airplay icon normally is. I must restart itunes to get it back. I've had this issue sporadically for a few updates of itunes but with the latest update it now seems to happen every time. Does anyone know how to fix this?
It may be unrelated but playing internet radio stations that I've saved to playlists also makes the airplay icon disappear. I now must go to the full internet radio drop down menu to select a station to be able to play it over airplay.
I'm using the latest itunes, OS X, and all devices are updated. I've reset SMC and PRAM.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I am having a problem with Airplay. I have installed Mavericks on my iMac Mid 2011 type and noticed that the airplay icon does not appear on the menu bar as advertised by apple. I am able to play both music and video through the itunes but I am not able to do any mirroring. The airplay display does not even appear in the display settings. Also, I am prevented from using any other alternative solution such as AirParrot. It just gives me a connection blocked error. I have checked the firewall and all is ok. I would really appreciate some help.

  • TS2972 airplay icon missing on ipad for apple TV?

My kids had been using Apple TV and their iPod and iPad were connected to it. We had a power outage a few days ago and I believe that it may have caused them to somehow lose the icon on the ipad and iPod. We cannot figure out how to get them connected again. Please help!

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
        1.    Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
        2.    Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
        3.    Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
        4.    Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
        5.    Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
        6.    Restart your mobile device.
