Airplay intermittent with Apple TV, but fine with Airport express

I have a strange issue with airplay that I can't figure out.
At home: (Apple TV, Airport Time Capsule, and everything is within 10 feet of each other). Usually just using airplay from iTunes, but the same problem exists when I navigate to the library via apple TV.
•My MBP will stop playback randomly (A few seconds to a half hour). I assume that this is a buffer / streaming issue. However my iphone streams music without interuption for hours! So it would appear as though the problem is specific to the MBP
HOWEVER...
At work: (airport express and computer is within 5 feet)
•My MBP streams perfectly for hours (no issues)
I just can't figure out why my MBP is having problems at home. I've ran updates for everything I own (MBP, apple TV, Time capsule), but I still get inconsistent streaming! Frustrating.
Any insights, guesses, or other airing of grievances would be greatly appreciated!
thanks,
Brett

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

  • Airplay error with airport express and apple tv

I receive this message "An unknown error (-15006) occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device" when trying to play audio from iTunes on Macbook Pro to my airport express and/or apple tv. Both airport express and apple tv work fine with my iphone and ipad as well as streaming video from itunes library to apple tv from the Macbook. I have tried the previously posted solutions, but nothing has worked yet.

  • Airplay mirroring with airport express

As my title says , can i use airport express to wirelessly mirror my Macbook Pro with Retina display to my tv or i need an apple tv?
Is there any other solution to use airplay mirroring without apple tv?
    Thank you in advance

As a minimum you need the following for AirPlay Mirroring to work:
iPhone 4S (or later), iPad 2 (or later), iPad mini, or iPod touch (5th generation)1
Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation)
    Wi-Fi (802.11a/g/n) network
For the last item, you could use an AirPort Express, but you will still need an Apple TV to get the audio/video to the TV.

  • Does airplay work with airport express without wifi?

I would like to stream music from my Macbook Air to my stereo using Airport Express. However, it is my weekend home in which there is no wifi connection. Will it still work or does Airplay require a wifi conenction to the internet to work?

Yes, you should be able to get it to work. I tried it just now with an older AirPort Express, and it works for me, but the configuration and settings are rather unconventional.
Set the AirPort Express to create a wireless network with no security code— it may work with one but maybe not. Configure the AirPort Express in Bridge Mode with respect to the Internet, and assign it a static IP address of, say, 192.168.4.1.
I made a wireless connection to the AirPort Express from an iPhone 5 and was able to play music from my iPhone to speakers attached to the AirPort Express. Interestingly, the iPhone doesn't actually make a full connection to the AirPort Express but the wireless network name shows up in its Settings.
The iPhone has a self-assigned 169.x.x.x IP address, but I am able to choose the AirPort Express-attached speakers from the Music app on my iPhone.
There may be a cleaner way to do this, but one way or another you should be able to get it to work.

  • Help me out! I am trying to build my airplay system with airport express.

    hello,
I have 2 AIRPORT express (1084 old version and new version).
I am using my laptop in Den and new version of airport is connected to modem( this is Router) / printer for airprint.
I'd like to play music using my audio system in living room.
    1) If I connect old version of airport express to audio system, do 2 airports are going to work together?
-airport 1 = connected to internet cable and usb printer in den.
-airport 2 = connected to audio system in living room.

Yes, just configure the 2nd Airport Express to "Join" the existing network.
Turn on "Allow AirTunes" in the 2nd Express and connect to Stereo.

  • Apple TV 1st generation cannot use AirTunes with Apple TV 2nd generation or Airport express 2nd generation

Is it normal that Apple TV 1st generation cannot use AirTunes with Apple TV 2nd generation or Airport express 2nd generation? I want to play music synced in my ATV 1st gen. to a nymber of speakers in the house. In the list of speakers I can see Apple TV itself and my two Airport Expresses 1st generation but not my Apple TV 2nd generation or my Airport express 2nd generation. For the ATV 2nd gen. I found a solution: when I enable the Airplay setting of XBMC which is installed on my ATV 2nd generation, then AirTunes in ATV 1st gen. sees the speaker "XBMS (Apple-TV)". Itunes can in my Macbook pro can use Airplay with all my speakers, i.e. ATV 1st gen., ATV 2nd gen., Airport Express 1st gen., Airport Express 2nd gen.

Last time I checked ATV1 could not use Airtunes to send audio to an AppleTV 2 or 3 - highly annoying as you think they would have kept backwards compatibiility for audio, but it seems Airplay is more than a superset of Airtunes.

  • Airplay audio (from iPad or iPhone) is continually dropping with AirPort Express.

On other support articles I have seen the suggestion to change Wi-Fi frequency, but I do not  have this option with my AirPort utility (V5.6.1) running on a Windows laptop.
Any advice would be gratefully received.
    Thank you

  • IPad and iPhone 4 and new 5s drop connection with airport express. This just started recently after working fine for a year. PC does not drop. Wifi signal fine. Help?

Streaming music with airport express and Apple TV to 2 different systems. No problem with Apple TV. iPad and iPhone 4 and new 5s keep dropping their connection to airport express. Airport express connection to wifi appears to be fine. No dropping by windows PC. This just started recently after working fine for a year. Help?

What does any of this have to do with the Apple TV?

  • Configuring the time capsule airport wlan function as "connect to wlan", the time caspule gets a correct IP adress from the other wlans IP range, but does not assign this to the ethernet ports. With Airport Express it worked!

Configuring the time capsule airport wlan function as "connect to wlan", the time capsule gets a correct IP adress from the other wlans IP range, but does not assign this to the ethernet ports. With Airport express it worked, the single Ethernet port got the IP Parameters passed through!
My setup is a Vodafon Esaybox connected to ISP. Time Capsule is not able to extend the wlan of the easybox, neither airport express can do.
Only the option "connect to wlan" is succesful.
With airport express I was able to connect my Sony Bravia TV to the lan via ethernet to stream pictures, the TV set got an IP adress from the easybox.
With the time capsule the easybox dosn't find devices connected to the ethernet ports to submit IP adresses. The TV set get another IP adress (169.xxx.x.x.) in subnet mask 255.255.0.0 and I don not now where from.
My notebook is a MacBook pro.
    Any idea????
    Thank a lot in advance!
    Kind regards

Neverthe less, could there be the chance, that this feature could be implemnented with an firmware update?
That would appear to be a question for Apple to answer. You can make suggestions to Apple here:
Apple - AirPort Extreme - Feedback
If the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule are configured to "extend a wireless network" they will provide additional wireless coverage....and...the Ethernet ports are enabled in this type of setup.
The "catch" here is that you must have an Apple router providing the network to be extended.

  • Does AirPlay work with AirPort Extreme?

Does AirPlay work with AirPort Extreme?

The AirPort Extreme does allow AirPlay to "pass-through" but it does NOT support receiving AirPlay streams to be played back through powered speakers or an audio receiver as it does not have any built-in audio circuitry like the AirPort Express models.

  • Mac OS X not working with Airport Express but Win XP is ok on the same iMac

    Hello everyone,
as the message says I am having troubles with Airport Express.
To say it quickly, I live in a house share in London, and everyone in the house enjoys the wifi without troubles. I do as well with my macbook from every point of the house.
The troubles are with the big iMac: with mac os the internet signal won't just work at all, pages take minutes to load with both safari and firefox, and most of the times the loading times out.
I thought it was a signal power problem, but the weirdest thing of them all is that... when I switch to Windows XP on the same iMac (and right now I am writing from that!) the internet works perfectly!
Then I switch to mac os again... and slow internet again!
Anyone has an idea of what could this be?
    Many thanks for the support

Yes, I just discovered this problem on my own machine.
I just wanted to check some settings and discovered that the behaviour of the GUI of Server Admin was somewhat "erratic": First this "no services are configured" message. Some of the configured servers were marked with the usual green "up and running" bullet, others dark grey - those were normally configured and running and clicking the appropriate line seemed to force Server Admin to check the actual state and then turned also green. But sometimes configuration pages were "greyed out", or while switching through the tabs Server Admin claimed that where were "unsaved changes" which should be saved (or discarded).
And then SMB: this was light grey, as usual when a service is not running and clicking on it I browsed through the configuration tabs - everything seemed ok (all my settings were correctly shown, configured as PDC with right domain name etc.) - and I started the service. Then suddenly the configuration settings changed to the default settings - no more PDC, but a "standalone server" with workgroup name "WORKGROUP"...
Looks for me, as if Server Admin lost it's "source" file for the configuration (the file in /var/db/smb.conf says, that it is automatically generated -- does somebody were the source file is stored?)...

  • Does Apple list available printers that work with AirPort Express?

Just bought an AirPort Express hoping that I could print wirelessly with my HP 1350 All-in-One, and it won't work. Found out after the fact that my printer doesn't support USB wireless printing.
I'm looking for a basic color printer to work with AirPort Express for wireless printing by other family members, and I'll continue to use my HP 1350 with USB for scanning and OCR functions.
Does Apple provide a list of recommended printers that will work with AirPort Express?
    Kevin
    PowerBook G4 1.5 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1 GB DDR SDRAM

    No Apple doesn't any more.
I have been maintaining a community created list.
    http://tech.ifelix.net/1013.html
This is an unofficial list of USB printers which are are compatible with the AirPort Extreme Base Station and Airport Express. Printers in bold have been added to the original list that Apple provided.
Printers in dark red are in fact the only printers I have personally tested.
Please also note that due to changes in the firmware of both the Airport Extreme base station and the introduction of the Airport Express some printers which are in this list may no longer in fact be compatible.

  • I have internet service on iMac but cannot get connection for Blu ray with airport express.

Why am I not getting internet connection for blu ray on tv with airport express?

Which exact model of the AirPort Express do you have?
Did the Blu Ray player connect wirelessly to the Express before or has it never been able to connect to it at all?

  • Extending a time capsule with airport express twice

    Hi,
I have been trying to extend my existing wireless network recently but it never ended up how I wished...
I have one 4th generation Time Capsule (A1409) and two Airport Express 802.11n (1st generation A1264).
All currently have MAC Address base authentication and no security in place for was of testing (security not relevant at this point in time).
When I extend my Time Capsule with either Airport Express this works like a charm, the LEDs are all green and connection works for client devices.
When I extend my Time Capsule with both Airport Express the same applies, everything works.
However what I have found not to works it extending my Time Capsule with one Airport Express and then extending this Airport Express with the second Airport Express. While all LEDs are green and the second Airport is seen in the Airport Utility, I find no client are ever able to connect to it and alway either connect to the first Airport Express or to the Time Capsule. This is an issue I the area I want to cover is pretty big and I need the second Airport Express for the additional reach.
I haven't found anything against this setup, it however appears you can't connect to the second Airport. The Airport Utility would even accurately depict the situation with Airport Express one dotted line to Time Capsule, and Airport Express two dotted line to Airport Express one.
However no connection seam possible to Airport Express two.
I have swapped Airport Express one and two, and in this case Airport Express gets the clients and Airport Express one now extending Airport Express two gets none.
Is this an expected behavior, i.e. should I give up or is there anything I can do about this ?

However what I have found not to works it extending my Time Capsule with one Airport Express and then extending this Airport Express with the second Airport Express.
Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature will only allow you to extend the signal one level, not two. It's possible to have more than one device extending the signal, but each extender must connect directly to the main base station.....not to another device that is already extending the signal.
The Airport Utility would even accurately depict the situation with Airport Express one dotted line to Time Capsule, and Airport Express two dotted line to Airport Express one.
This is an illusion. AirPort Express is "joining" the wireless network.....not extending it. When the Express "joins" a network, it can be used for AirPlay, or a remote printer could be connected to the USB port, but the Express will not provide any additional wireless signal coverage when it joins a network.
    Is this an expected behavior
Yes. I can try to look up Apple's support document that explains this if you want more information, but you may likely already have all the information that you need. Let us know.

  • Very Slow 12" Powerbook with Airport Express - 15" PB OK

    Here's my problem; Our 12" 1.5 PB is very slow with Airport Express but It is OK when directly connected to the cable Modem via Ethernet. We also have a 15" PB 1.67 that works great with Airport Express & Ethernet. The 12" PB takes approximately 4-10 times longer to load Internet pages than the 15" PB. Here's what I've tried so far without success;
    - made sure software was up to date (10.4.8)
    - turned off the A/E security
    - different A/E channels
    - moved the A/E base station to another location
    - a differrent A/E base station
    - a Linksys WRTG54 base
    - new Airport Extreme Card in 12" PB
    - ran Apple hardware test on 12" PB - checks OK
    - re-installed fresh OS and Apps from original install disks
    - Firefox instead of Safari
    - new user account on 12" PB
    - re-installed original 512 RAM
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Jerry,
You're not going crazy, by the way. I have the exact same problem with my 12' Powerbook. I even tried swapping airport cards with another Powerbook. No luck. Ethernet is ok.
    Any help is appreciated.
