Airplay lag?

When I try to mirror my iPhone 4s it's really slow. I tried mirroring multiple times and everytime I try it takes like 20 to 30 seconds for my phone screen to show up on my tv. Also when I try to stream music over airplay there is a ton of lag and the music is really choppy and skips most of the song. What can I do to eliminate the lag? Or do I have a defaulty Apple tv?

The lag is mainly due to your internet connection. You could possibly upgrade your internet plan with your ISP or turn off all other devices that use wifi/internet. Adding to this, you could restart your modem or turn off other devices in your home such as microwaves which have been known to affect wifi. Hope this helps

  • Possible to Adjust Airplay Lag to Sync Multiple Airplay Speakers?

When playing to 2 different ATV2s, my iTunes music is not in sync between two sets of speakers.  Is there anyway to adjust the lag time to one of the ATVs?
    Here is my setup:
    - Living Room - one ATV2 hooked up to my TV via HDMI, with powered speakers hooked up to my TV's audio output;
    - Bedroom - one ATV2 hooked up directly to powered speakers (only used for music).
After reading through the forums, I am fairly certain the sync problem is due to the extra time my TV takes to process the audio signal before outputting the audio to the connected speakers.  But what I have not been able to find is a solution to this problem.  Basically what I need to do is delay the signal to the bedroom ATV maybe 0.5 seconds.  Are there any 3rd party applications that can fix this?  Will Apple ever release a solution?

    I just found something out about the Rogue Amoeba software Airfoil on another thread here. People are complaining that there is something wrong with the Pioneer recievers (my reciever as well) as this is where they experience the delay. I don't think they understand that the reciever, like your TV, is processing the signal before it outputs it to the speakers as opposed to basic powered speakers that just shoot the signal out. Anyway the aforementioned software has an option to delay the signal of the individual airplay devices. I have used this software before and it has given me fits with much more severe sync issues in the past, but that was years ago now, so maybe they have fixed that. I haven't tried it recently.  Anyhow, here are the instructions I found for individually syncing the devices using the Rogue Amoeba Airfoil;
We do offer a manual sync adjustment, as a debugging tool, in Airfoil. Please note that this is not supported for everyday use - on a network which is functioning properly, it shouldn't be needed at all. That said, you can try it if you like.
To enable the sync adjustment, follow these steps:
    1) Quit and re-launch Airfoil while holding down the option key. This will bring up the debugging window.
    2) Turn the Sync Adjustment debugger to On, and click Done.
Now each remote speaker will have an additional slider below the volume slider - that's the sync adjustment. The center is 0 offset, and the ends are +/-1 second. Adjustments only take effect when connecting, so if you're experimenting with it, you'll need to disconnect, adjust, and then reconnect to see how well it worked.
Airfoil will remember your adjustments after you quit, even if you turn Sync Adjustment off. (All that does is enable/disable the GUI, not the adjustment settings.)

  • Airplay lag only on iMac.

Im using a 27" late 2013 iMac, Apple tv 3. All are less than 2 months old..and I haven't got a clue what todo!
    Help!

Have just tried Airfoil and then there is no problem. So it must be an iTunes issue...

  • ATV2 Mountain Lion Airplay Lag

I have a MBP 2011 running Mountain Lion now and I was looking to stream video from it to the ATV2 we have in our living room however the mirroring is show dabilitating lag. For my router I am using an Apple Time Campsule with 2TB drive I tried using the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz signals with the 5 GHz showing slight improvement. When mirrioring is set up there is a major latency for any action, often around a full second for every action. Movies are unwatatchable, they continuously stutter, dropping up to 6 seconds per scene. When trying to stream nothing else was connected to the router. The router is up one floor in our house where the cable comes in but I don't know if that causes that much of a delay. I was wondering if there was any way to fix this. I was even thinking about buying an airport express and wire it to the Apple TV but I wanted to make sure this would fix it before I sink the money into it.

I have the  ATV3, but have the same issue while using Airplay with Mountain Lion; though probably a little less lag than what you described. Switching my Airport to 5GHz made no difference from the 2.4 GHz. Once I ran a direct ethernet cable straight from the iMac into ATV it ran perfect. However, I had to move the computer downstairs to do it. That kind of defeated the point of Airplay. Good luck.

  • AirPlay lagging with MBA but ok with ipad

When I use my new macbook air to stream movies with airplay to atv3 quality is very bad. It is lagging a lot and general poor quality.
However if I use my ipad it works perfectly every time.
    Any ideas regarding this problem?

There's nothing that you can do on the ATV or MBA end to improve the throughput of the connection, there's no settings or adjustment everything is automatically negotiated. That being said there are numerous threads across all the portable sub-forums with user reporting identical problems: Portable laggy, iOS device not laggy.
These movies you're attempting to stream, are they not in iTunes? If they're in iTunes why not use the Home Sharing of iTunes option?
You can try some router adjustments, making sure it's set to 5GHz (if your router is new enough to support that) try adjusting channels, moving the machine closer to the router, reducing router transmission interference in the immediate area, etc.
There's also the method of wiring the AppleTV to the router via Ethernet or the machine to the router via Ethernet to improve throughput on one of the two ends.

  • Airplay Lag on iPhone 4

Updated to iOS 4.3 on all my apply gizmos.. ATV, iPad, iPhone4 iPods etc... Streaming to and from my iPhone 4 is Laggy... Takes a very long time to load and once loaded plays 1 second and has to rebuffer... plays another second... rebuffers (again for a very long time)... Simply doesn't work...
To and from the iPad (first one) works well and with fast loading time... Also just tried on my wife's iphone4... same thing...
Honestly streaming to the iPhone for me isn't much of an issue as I would be using the iPad for that, however streaming FROM the phone to the ATV was a feature I was really hoping for, as it stands now, useless...

Does your router support 5GHz? If so, your Apple TV 2 and iPad support it, while the iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4 do not.

  • Video AirPlay From Yosemite iMac Lag

When I AirPlay a full screen video to the Apple TV there is a small amount of lag / gitter.
I currently have the 3rd Generation Apple TV, updated.
I am also using AirPlay on an iMac with Retina 5K display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)
I use an E4200 Cisco router with the latest firmware.
    iStrumbler result:
S/N 71 db, Signal -24 dBm, Noise -95 dBm, Channel 157 (I'm only one using this channel in the area), Frequency 5785 MHz.
I have verified both Apple TV and iMac connected directly to my router with same results.
I have been using VLC as my video player.
The only thing that has worked for me was using Beamer  http://beamer-app.com
If I use Beamer there is no lag or bitter, perfect video!
I have posted about this similar issue in the Apple TV community and was suggested trying another router, so this morning I purchased the Apple AirPort Express and experienced the same lag/gitter results.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, I rather not purchase additional software (beamer), to resolve this issue.

    Thanks @vazandrew for quick response!
I set the Apple TV and iMac both connected directly to my router with the same results.
I have also used istumbler and Apple's Wireless Diagnostics provided with OS X.  My signal strength and noise are all strong and normal.
I also moved my wireless router to a new location just to be sure.
I'm using VLC to play the video, maybe there is another better player?  The video is running perfectly on the iMac just gitters on Apple TV display, it almost becomes unnoticeable after watching for a bit.

  • Airplay files from device lag/stutter

    Hello apple friends.
I got a apple tv. i use this brilliant app called air video HD wich works fine for streaming movies from PC to the apple tv. no lag and no stutter.
Also, mirroring games like modern combat 4 work without stutter. there is a delay in controls wich makes it unplayable, but no stutter.
...but here comes the problem. while air video HD can stream movies just fine(probaly by converting on-the-fly) it cannot play exactly desame file from my iphone 5s or ipad air to the third-gen apple tv. Well it actually can (tried VLC from app store) but there is alot stutter.
Its weird how everything else that i stream is without problems or stutter....but playing files locally(1080p, i want no less) results in annoying stutter.
How can i fix this? Is there a better player to use? Is on-the-fly converting and streaming consuming less data so i need faster connection?
i would like to add that the apple tv is wireless set up. no cable to router. only will do this cable to router if you really think this will solve the issue.
    any additional info required?
    Thanks!

You are using the most complicated and failure prone options.  Streaming video over WifI rarely works well.  In your case you are trying to do it twice concurrently.  One WiFi connection to the device with streaming video and then a second wireless connection to AppleTV.  On top of which AirPlay is horribly bug ridden and un-reliable.
Just select the content you want to watch from the ATV menus.  It works very well and with none of the issues you get with AirPlay.
And to your last question yes you will have fewer issues if you use a wired connection for ATV.

  • HT204291 Really bag lag on AirPlay. Only just started happening

I have only recently started experiencing Lag on AirPlay. My Internet connection seems fine. I play songs through iCloud, it's just AirPlay that's become really poor. It was fine before. Any ideas would be really appreciated

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

  • Is it normal streaming video lagged through AirPlay?

I just got new iPad and new AppleTV, I played streaming video on my iPad, (which is an app using wi-fi bandwith), I also turn on AirPlay on iPad and mirror to TV through AppleTV2. The router is AirPort, I believe the mirroring also use wi fi bandwith, the result is that the video is lagged so much and can't even watch.
However, if I use AV cable connect directly from iPad to TV, the streaming video is normal, play perfect, so is it case normal? I don't know if streaming and mirroring use the double bandwith to cause the problem, any advice??
    Thanks

Mirroring always works fine for me, your network may have a problem such as interference.
Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.

  • Airplay from MBP works great. Any tips on optimizing lag?

We're using Apple TVs on a couple LED TVs in the office, and it works great! The ONLY thing we notice is some lag when mirroring our desktops via AirPlay (mouse tracking, refresh, etc) Not a big deal at all, but if there is anything I can do to optimize this, it would be great to know.
. We're all on < 2012 MB Pros or MB Airs, and have a 2012 Time Capsule running as our wireless router using 802.11n.

Such lags are invariably network related. You may be able to optimise your network by repositioning equipment or changing channels, otherwise it may require additional equipment.

  • Airplay mirroring with 2012 macbook pro ATV3 lagging

Hey! Just went out and bought a appl tv gen 3 for my new macbook pro 13"
Boy was I surprised by the lousy quality when turning on airplay mirroring...my wireless setup consists of a airport express (the older version) and the Apple tv. I tried mirroring with my ios devices too and it is lagging considerable - to the degree that I will probably return it to the store.
Watching the video reviews online and apple's commersials it all runs smooth so I'm also thinkng there might be a problem with my unit. The ATV has full connection in the status bar to my wireless. There is nothing wrong with my internet connection when surfing the web with the laptop or ios devices.
After doing some searches on the web I kind of get the feeling that it used to work, before 10.8 upgrade...is this true? In that case I might keep it and hold my breath for a fix. Otherwise it will be returned pretty quick.

Im having the same issue.  Airplay to apple tv 3rd gen works great on ipad 3.  On my $4000 macbook pro retina with 16gb and 2.7ghz cpu it keeps lagging and freezing.
    Can anyone please help us?

  • 6.0.1 : Apple tv lag when using airplay (mirror) on macbook pro...

    Hi,
I have recently bought a new apple tv (october 2013) partly for airplay (mirror) with my macbook pro.
Since the 6.0 version when i use my macbook i have some video lag..
I updated to the 6.0.1 and since.... it's worst !
I need your help i'm becoming crazy...
    1- My tv : Samsung UE40EH6030 LED 3D
    2- I'm using a 2011 mac book pro 2,3 GHz Intel Core i5 with 4gb memory (10.9 Mavericks)
3- I have checked my internet connection (best canal : 11)
    Thanks

Mac OS X 10.9.1 has fixed the problem for me.
    Pixelation is gone.
The delay between mouse/keyboard input and display is noticible but manageable.
Streaming video works well (with audio / video just a tiny bit out of sync).
