AirPlay lossless question

I have my Mac Mini's iTunes library loaded with Apple Lossless albums (ripped from CD).
The Mac mini is a 2011 model.
I have a Pioneer X-SMC3-K, which supports AirPlay.
My question is, am I getting ALAC quality from the Pioneer when streaming over AirPlay from the Mac Mini, even though the Pioneer doesn't natively support ALAC?

Assuming Pioneer is using the same implementation across all its products (I have a VXS-1121 receiver), yes. It can send ALAC up to 16/44 over Airplay.

• IOS5 airplay pictures question

Hi, I have iOS5 on my verizon iphone4. I can play music through my computer via bluetooth with my iphone. Is there a way I can view pictures on my iphone on my computer using airplay over bluetooth or wireless? My computer is windows7.
Thanks

I also had a lot of problems after ios 5. Go back andcheck your settings in itunes. Make sure you have the movies and photos added to the library and have them selected to sync. Then resync and you shoulb be ok.

• Itunes/Airplay audio question

I recently purchased a Yamaha RX-V473 receiver. It is Airplay capable and I was wondering if I would be able to play 192 kHz/24bit audio files at full resoulution from iTunes on my Win 7 machine.

you should be able to as long as the two have the airplay transceiver you should be all set, i can say this with cofidence because I also use airplay with an apple tv and i can play it like i am looking at a dvd

• Airplay display question

I have been looking all over and I'm guessing it's either a silly thing or something that can't be done...
With the iMac and AppleTV I'm trying to get the iMac to mirror through Airplay on my HDTV. To use as a computer, not just to stream.
Of course unless I choose to favor the iMac in the monitor optimization (or unless I go for "extension" instead of mirroring, which is NOT what I wanna do), my screen placement gets all messed up on the iMac.
I may be peculiar, but I don't use full screen for all apps, and some apps I keep on top for a portion of the screen just so, and others 3/4th on that side and so on and so forth.
Whenever I hit "optimize for AppleTV monitor" (which I have to do if I wanna be able to read what's on my HDTV), it all gets messed up and resized on my iMac.
IS THERE a way to lock window positions or resolution?! Or to NOT have the iMac "follow" what is happening on the other monitor (sorry I can't find another way to explain it).
To each monitor is own resolution, I guess is what I would love... Or at least have the iMac remember what window goes where after I bring it back to iMac only.
Thanks!

Mirroring means an exact copy, so the screens have to share a resolution.
If you want to "NOT have the iMac "follow" what is happening on the other monitor" then you do not want mirroring.

• Airplay & Mirroring Question

I just set up my Apple TV.  Home Sharing is working fine (from my base PC where iTunes is located).  How do I do 'airplay' and 'mirroring' from my iPad, iPod Touch, and iPhone 4S?  And - can I use Airplay and Mirroring on a 1st generation iPad (running ios 5.1.1?
Thanks!

.....How do I do 'airplay' and 'mirroring' from my iPad, iPod Touch, and iPhone 4S?.....
Assuming both devices are on the same network and that AirPlay is not turned off on the Apple TV, then simply tap on the screen when you are watching content you wish to stream to your Apple TV, then tap the airplay icon that appears in the control bar, choose the Apple TV from the menu that appears.
When displaying the content you wish to mirror on the iPad 2, iPad 3 or iPhone 4s, double tap the home button (quickly) and swipe the bottom row of apps to the right to reveal the playback controls, tap the AirPlay icon and select your Apple TV from the list of available devices.
.......can I use Airplay and Mirroring on a 1st generation iPad (running ios 5.1.1?
Basic AirPlay yes, Mirroring No.

• Apple lossless question

hi, does apple lossless just pertain to CDs that are imported?
Would I be wasteing my time tring to burn cd quaulity music, by purchasing an iTunes plus album and burning wav? Is 256 the best I'll get from iTunes "today"? Not tring to sound wordy, but thanks in advance.

Apple Lossless can be used for music imported from CDs or converted from AIFF.

You cannot purchase audio content from iTunes with a bitrate over 256Kbps at this time.

• AirPlay question

I know that AirPlay is yet to be rolled out on iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads, but I have a question in anticipation of this.
I understand that AirPlay will allow you to stream content from an iPod Touch to the new Apple TV, and also from iTunes to the AppleTv and Airport Express. But, what I'd like to know is if one will be able to stream from iTunes to an iPod Touch?
The reason for me is that I have my Library in Apple Lossless format and so I can only have a small part of it synced to my iPod at any one time. It'd be nice, some evenings, to sit there and stream from my lossless library direct to my iPod and retain the quality.
This brings up a question about how to browse the library remotely though as i have an older (2G) iPod Touch which can't multitask, so I can't see it being possible to run the Remote App and AirPlay at the same time.
Questions, questions....

no doubt you are aware that you can stream music to a Touch already, even if it's only by way of 3rd party tools such as Airfoil or AirPhones.
as for AirPlay, see this: http://www.apple.com/itunes/airplay/
what would really be cool is to be able to stream video to mobile devices
stream from my lossless library direct to my iPod and +*retain the quality+*.
check the post by Tesserax in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11836398&#11836398.
Tesserax talks about streaming to an AX, but the same should be true for streaming to a Touch.

yeah, you will probably have to either invest in a new device or achieve the same with two older ones

• Audio Streaming quality on ATV Airplay question

I'm starting to build a "modest" audiophile stereo by ripping my CD's into iTunes via Apple Lossless, wirelessly streaming them to my ATV via Airplay, and then listening to them on my high(er) end DAC and / integrated amplifier. My question is, does the ATV and iTunes stream the music "lossless" over my wireless network (i.e., at ~ 800kbps), or does it "max out" around 256kbps. I ask because I don't really hear a big difference in the sound quality between the two formats and I'm wondering if I should really be running a USB from my Mac to my stereo's DAC / integrated amp.
Any thoughts?

Music is streamed losslessly. Specifically, whatever you are listening to, be it AAC, Apple Lossless, AIFF, etc. is encoded as Apple Lossless and then streamed to the ATV.
At least I think. That's how everything has worked between iTunes and an Airport Express with AirTunes in the past (Stereophile magazine ran a test where they showed they could play an audio file via Airport Express and recover the original file's PCM data exactly from Airport Express's optical port). Things may be different with AirPlay and the new Apple TV, but I suspect it's still lossless.
I do think it maxes out at 44 or 48 kbps, 16 bit, so if you download any high resolution files, you'd want to run USB or optical to your DAC. Otherwise, unless the AirPlay implementation's changed drastically, you're fine.

• Question about Lossless Rendering in AE (PNG not found, can Premier Pro read this "lossless" export?

Hello,
I want to compose short transitions (45 seconds) in AE CS6 incorporating 3D graphics and also a short intro (30 seconds) containing some streaming video clips assembled in a 3d space as well.
My deliverable will ulitmately be in Blu-Ray format and I need excellent quality.  I have zero concerns about the amount of time it takes to render; I only care about ultimate video quality in my deliverables.
My NLE is Premiere Pro CS6.  I'm working with some beautiful Canon 5D images on a 2008 MacPro tower.  I only photograph the day after it rains so I can always get pristine shots.
What is the best possible workflow for me, given my reliance on AE and PrPro and Canon 5D images and .mov files?
Earlier, Rick suggested exporting in PNG compressed format, QT.  But I don't see that in my render options, although the Lossless option at the top certainly looks appealing.  Can PrPro read that type of export?
Am I doomed to vaguely average quality in Blu-Ray format or is it possible to have a really nice "wow" factor using this workflow?
I'm going to purchase a new X.264 encoder when the Apple version is released this month.
Does that make any difference in how my final results from AE will appear?
If I need to abandon this whole 3d motion graphics enterprise because AE and PrPro, working together, are only capable of vaguely average deliverables with respect to 3D motion graphics, then so be it.
I would prefer to cut my losses now.
What are your candid thoughts?
Thanks,

Thanks fellas!
One two minute video and one photographic screen shot is worth 10,000 words.
Ben, do you recommend purchasing QuickTime 7 Pro for that PNG render workflow?
Also, a friend of mine recommended the following workflow.  Any comments?  Constructing my own custom timeline sounds like a bit of a chore.... perhaps it is worth it?  He's worked quite a bit in large studios and does not recommend PNG here.  Not sure why.
Matt
My friend recommended:
"I still recommend ProRes for Adobe, and most of the bigger shops that I've heard of that use Premiere still convert to Prores. Cineform or DNxHD would work just as well, depending on your workflow. You can create a custom timeline that will let you work and render full-res files for those editing codecs, instead of the default low-res mpeg2 that Adobe is set to work with.
Working with H.264 is still much more processor-intensive than many systems are prepared for, and in the ProRes conversion process hopefully you're adding reel and TC info if you don't already have it (I'm betting you don't).
Really it's a question of knowing and taking control of what is happening to your video files, or just letting your system do what it wants, which often isn't what's best.
As far as final conversion... I use Mpeg-4 in an mp4 container to avoid the gamma shifts that i see too often in h.264 .mov files. As much as I love the idea of open source, it's not always practical for professionals. X.264 may be fully compatible, but I haven't had reason to work with it instead of .mp4 files. Given the choice of h.264 vs x.264, I would definitely test out x.264, as I've read that you can avoid gamma issues by using it as well."

• A question about AirPlay...

I understand that AirPlay does allow you to display on an AppleTV or other 3rd-party device music, videos and/or photos from your iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad.
I have been scouring the 'net since the iPod event looking to see if anyone can clarify something about AirPlay in iOS 4.2, but cannot find the answer to the following question:
"Will AirPlay also include native support in iTunes to stream music and video directly to iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad from PC/MAC via home Wi-Fi like the "Air Video" app in the app store streams (minus the conversion utility)?"

Nobody outside of apple knows for sure, they are not talking.
Since it has not been stated outright-I doubt it will.

• Color Space Question...  using Lagarith Lossless Codec.

Hi all,
I use the Lagarith Lossless Codec for all my source editing files importing into Premiere Pro and for exporting to my encoder I use.
My question is this.  I found that most of my sources are in YUV color space, so when I prep them for editing using VirtualDub, etc... I export them to Lagarith Lossless Codec in the YUY2 color space setting.  The size difference between using RGB and YUY2 is enough to make me want to just use YUY2.  So when editing those prepped files in YUY2 in Premiere Pro and them exporting the in the same YUY2 color space configuration, does it degrade in quality at all?  I heard somewhere that Premiere Pro ONLY edits in RGB color space.  So am I really messing up here or is it safe to do what I am doing?
Thanks in advance!

Premiere Pro will keep the color space of the original media.  And many of the effects can now also operate in YUV space (They are marked by the YUV icon.)  However, any effects you use that are not marked with that icon will force an RGB conversion.

• AirPlay Questions

Hello, I have an old Intel iMac running OSX 10.6.8 & iTunes 11.0.1 & I'm wondering if I can use Airtunes on this set up to run a multiroom music system. I'm thinking of an AppleTV unit connected to a 5.1 surround sound system, an Airport express connected to an existing stereo unit & maybe 1 or 2 dedicated airtunes docks for bedrooms etc.
If my hardware/software is up to the job, the other possible problem is that we do not currently have an apple hand held device (iPhone, iPad, ipod Touch etc) to use as the controller & I don't want to control the system from my desktop. We do have several Android mobile phones & an Android Tablet (Nexus 7) in the house - Is there an app etc that I could use to enable one or more of our Android devices to act as the controller for the system?
If all this is possible, the other question I had was would my iMac have to be on & iTunes open for Airplay to work, or would it work even if the iMac was not logged on (sleep mode etc)?
Thanks for any advise!

Sorry, I meant Airplay not Airtunes in above question!

• Developer question.  App for camera roll and airplay

TUAW posted an article today about using the private API for streaming video over AirPlay which apple does not currently allow for 3rd party developers. AirPlay can only be audio for us right now. In it, the article shows a 1 line code for MPMoviePlayerController that can allow this for any video.
self.movieController = [[[MPMoviePlayerController alloc] initWithContentURL:[NSURL fileURLWithPath:CINDY_PATH]] autorelease];
[movieController setAllowsWirelessPlayback:YES];
movieController.view.frame = self.view.bounds;
[self.view addSubview:movieController.view];
My question is, how would one go about to write an app that can gain access to the Camera Roll videos, begin playing it, and put in this code to allow for streaming videos shot with the iPhone to the Apple TV2? I know that it can't go in the AppStore, I really just want something I can use personally to instantly put videos up on the screen of my 1 year old son. Any ideas?

Just installed and tested the updates for the iPhone 4 and ATV.
When airplaying videos from the iPhone 4 to ATV, all videos in the iPod App, videos section, can be airplayed with no problem. However, for videos in the "photos" app (ie: videos you've recently taken with your iPhone camera), there is simply no airplay button. The still photos have an airplay button, and can be airplayed to your ATV with no problem. But the videos cannot. This is odd and disappointing for me, because this was the feature I was most excited about: Taking a video of my 7-month-old son with my iPhone 4 at one point during the day, then airplaying it to the ATV to show my wife and others later in the day, without having to bother to synch my iphone to my computer, put the video into iTunes, and navigate to it on the ATV.
