same experience here
but not sure why.
Have been hooking up my macbook pro directly to sony tv with cables (audio and video)
and it works great.
with the laptop there is a place to set mirror resolution(?) setting
so maybe it could be "fixed" for the ipad in the future.

  • HT201335 The airplay mirroring is not working on Mountain Loin.

The airplay mirroring is not working. The AirPlay mirroring box states "No devices Detected" and will not let you select anything else. The Apple tv is updated and I have a MacBook Pro (Oct 2011)

I don't disagree with much of what you are thinking/feeling, and many others too I dare say.
I do mention Airparrot but usually (not above) with some reservation saying some users report good things some others don't.  There is after all a demo and people should try that.
There is a big technical difference between Airplay from iTunes and Airplay mirroring.  The former simply has to send a preformatted h264 video stream (i.e. a file in the iTunes media library) to AppleTV across the LAN - there is no processing of this stream required, and AppleTV does the decoding.  The latter involves generating that stream live from individual video frames and also then streaming to AppleTV.
Apple seem to have gone for a hardware encoding solution for the stream using post 2011 Intel chip features detailed here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Quick_Sync_Video
They also seem to have decided not to offer a software solution for older processors - this is what grates - Airparrot clearly shows that many people can get acceptable performance on many earlier machines.
There are many many examples of instances where Apple has abandoned support for or left out features on older hardware - either playing safe avoiding underperformance or maybe something else.....
When there are genuine reasons not to support things that's fine.  When it's ambiguous customers get upset and might take their money elsewhere for future purchases.  Apple need to be careful as in the current climate things are pretty tight financially for most people, and they are not in the habit of replacing computers as often as mobile phones - I think the phone business model is clearly partly at fault.

  • How can I get AirPlay mirroring to fill widescreen? It works automatically for apps built for apple tv, but not Hulu Plus, for example, which letterboxes.

Airplay mirroring works great for apps (mostly video-related ones) with native Apple TV support, but for other apps - most notably Hulu Plus, it will only show letterbox on my 16:9 plasma TV. Again, my movies, tv shows and in-app videos like in CNN where there's a built-in AirPlay support will fill my widescreen, but apps that don't (Hulu Plus, games, photos) will not. Do I have to change the aspect ratio on the tv to 4:3? Will changing the resolution help.
How can I get mirroring to fill the entire tv screen, regardless of the app? Thanks.

Guys. Let's not get confused here.
-AirPlay mirroring feature 'mirrors' what's on your iPad 2 or above or your iPhone 4s on to your big TV via the Apple TV black box.
-Video apps that stream video (like native YouTube app) uses AirPlay which is different to mirroring.
-When you use the 'mirror' feature you get black bars all around (left/right & top/bottom)
-There are Games that use the full screen via the AirPlay mirroring feature and there are games that don't. It depends on the Game. For example download Asphalt 7:Heat and you'll notice you get widescreen display on the big TV but if you play Batman or Max Payne or others that don't support AirPlay mirroring then it you get black bars left and right.
-What's neat about the AirPlay mirror feature is that when you play Asphalt 7 with 'mirroring' set to on, the race is shown on the TV while your iPad shows something completely different (the route in real time with your rear view mirror)
-The Apple iPhoto app on your iPhone 4s or iPad 2/3 with AirPlay mirroring feature on you get a different experience. All of a sudden it goes full screen, and you are presented with their iPhoto logo.
-Those who have the first generation iPad don't have mirroring capabilities so the Asphalt 7:Heat games feature aren't available or the iPhoto app features. With iPad 1 you can only stream video or music or image slideshow (which all stream full screen). iPad 2 and iPad 3 can also do this but with the added benefit of 'mirorring' what is displayed on the iPad screen. Some apps take advantage of this, some don't.
There are no special setting on Apple TV to get rid of the black bars. You may be able to change the zoom settings on your actual big TV.
Hopefully this will clear this all up. I have the iPad 1 and recently upgraded to the new iPad 3. I also have an iPhone 4s. Same issues.
I don't think the AirPlay 'mirror' feature has developed fully yet. It has it's limitations but also has its advantages.

  • AppleTV / AirPlay mirroring

Hey! I have a new AppleTV out of the box and am trying to mirror my many iDevices through it. Mirroring works fine with an iPad 3 and an iPad 2. However, the AirPlay Mirroring "on/off" toggle switch is not available on an iPhone 4, a first gen iPad or an iPod Touch. AppleTV has been updated/restarted and all that. Everything is logged into the same wireless network. Both iPhones are running the latest iOS. Still no toggle switch.
Is there a compatibility issue here? Or is there a setting that I'm missing to make the Mirroring toggle switch appear? I've seen a lot of related posts, but it sounds like updates and restarts have solved almost everyone else's issues, just not mine. Any help is appreciated - I'm hoping it's something simple. Thanks!

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, this is what I suspected. The AppleTV box says " ... mirror the screen of your iPad or iPhone 4S on your TV ...," so maybe the iPad part should be updated to "iPad 2 or later." False advertising, no? Thanks again!

  • AirPlay Mirroring Issue

    Hi,
Can anyone assist in advising how I can get my airplay mirroring icon to appear again in the top menu bar of the macbook pro?
I've updated software on both apple tv and macbook pro.
Both devices are connected to the same network.
I know it works on this device as it has worked before.
I've taken it back to the store and they fixed it but never showed me what to do.
    Any suggestions & ideas welcome.
    Thanks.

When you first go to System preferences/Displays you should see this: (with no TV connected, click box with arrow.
Then connect TV and you should see this. Click box with arrow
Then next box should come up click arrow
You may have to click detect, gather, whenever a mirrioing appears click that.
This should appear on the menu bar

  • Airplay vs Airplay mirroring

    Hi All,
I would like to play my guitar through my mac and airplayed to my ATV (2 or 3). It seems the latency is to great to do this comfortably. After playing games from my iPhone airplay mirrored to my ATV it seems that the lancency for mirroring is about the same, if not better. How can this be possible since the video is being transmitted as well as the audio? - I assume its due to the packet size. Is there a way to speed up audio airplay?
    Cheers,
    Eds

thanks, that is what I thought.
I am trying to figure out how to get the Amazon VOD player on my TV and it seems that I wont be able to unless I have a streaming box that hosts the Amazon app.  Currently Apple TV does not host the app and the cable idea (lightning to HDMI) wont work either.

  • HT1595 I am not able to connect from my laptop to airplay mirroring equipment, icon is not showing on my laptop.

I am not able to connect from my laptop to airplay mirroring equipment, icon is not showing on my laptop. It does show when I hook up a HDMI wire to the apple TV box.

I think you mean Ethernet, not HDMI wire. If the airplay icon is showing up when wired then that would indicate an issue with your wifi network.

  • Airplay mirror

I have Airplay Mirror working fine over wifi. But to try and speed up its responce time I connected via ethernet direct from Mac pro to apple tv missing out my router. but when I turn off my wifi on the mac it will not let me mirror. Is it possible to mirror this way?
    Thanks

The only thing I can think that might work... Go to System Preferences… Sharing...
    Share your connection from: Ethernet...
Check the Ethernet box... (To computer using)
    Check the Internet Sharing box.
This might not work because the Apple TV is not a computer.

  • My airplay mirroring is choppy

everytime i try to use airplay mirroring for playing movies, hulu, etc it is always choppy. Both my iMac and my AppleTv 3 is up to date, both are plug directly into the router (netgear R6200), i turn off WMM setting in my router settings, tried different HDMI cables, even a different router and still the same. When i use Hulu and netflix directly from my ApplyTv i have no issue it works perfectly. Please Help i have ran out of ideas

But when i had my pc laptop i use to stream 1080p video to my boxee box with the same router over the wifi and never had a problem. this just started to heppen when i went all apple products

  • Airplay Mirroring Lags and Sputters

With Mirroring I have Extreme Lag and Sputtering. Video is unwatcahable as well as any work with it. My set up includes:
Apple TV 2 with high-grade cables (works fine streaming anything native on ATV2 as well as my iPhone 4s)
    MBP 15" i7 2.2 GHz with 8 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD
Time Capsule 2TB with 5 GHz Network enabled
Tried using both built in Mountain Lion Airplay Mirroring as well as AirParrot, both lag pretty bad with AirParrot being better.
There wasn't anything else running on the network and I only was running one-two apps at a time.

I think we're a way off from a perfect wireless second monitor. A year ago I tried a few on the iPad and had the same lagginess and haven't been inclined to try anything since. I just don't think Wi-Fi is the way to go. Maybe in about 2 or 5 years from now we will have a suitable wireless solution for a monitor. It's hard to predict at this point.
The best way to view your content is to create a dedicated server. LaCie makes a Media box like Apple TV with less bells and whistles, but it will play a lot more file types if you don't want to convert your videos. The only drawback to it is that you would have to purchase and install Twonky Server to get it to work (it's about $20-$30) as well, and to be honest, it just doesn't work as well on my Mac Server as it did on my Windows Server.
Of course, the other option is the one I stated above.
I was lucky in that I've always converted my videos to mp4 because I always believed that it was the most universal. I use a dedicated file server with iTunes running and my Apple TV works great with it.

  • I have iOs 5 on my iPad 2 but it will not let me use airplay mirroring on my apple TV i have the newer version of that too.

I have iOs 5 on my iPad 2 but it will not let me use airplay mirroring on my apple TV i have the newer version of that too.

You get all the new iWork suite (Pages 5, Numbers 3 & Keynote 6) free with your Mac purchase. You just need to go to the App Store and sign in with your Apple I.D.
We warn against relying on the new iWork Apps, they really are just public betas and we are getting a number of users here with unopenable files. Bad news if this is your Masters.
iWork '09 can be purchased as a Boxed DVD set from Amazon US$27, or online.
It is much more usable and safer (not totally).
LibreOffice [free] does not have as polished a UI but is actively supported, and uses open file formats as well as MsOffice formats. It also has the advantage of opening/saving virtually every known format on the planet (wish it would do Pages!) and has a usable but not briliant intgrated database.

  • ATV3 Homeshare/Airplay/Mirror Sloooow....

Okay, so I had the same problem as several people here with a brand new (bought it last night) ATV that would JUST BARELY stream video (or even audio) content from my iMac (also new).
    My situation:
ATV with 2.0.6 update (although the problem was identical PRIOR to the update)
    ATV 10-15' from the router
iMac one floor below the router (probably 25-30' "straight line")
Streaming from ANY internet based app worked reasonably well (Netflix, YouTube, Smithsonian, Radio) - after a "livable" short pause the video/audio would begin.
However, streaming/airplay/mirroring ANYTHING from my iMac was excruciatingly slow (basically impossible) - the "buffer" would take long enough to have a BIRTHDAY waiting on it and IF it started playing at all, it would stop intermittantly and buffer some more  :-|
After trying almost everything you can imagine, this is what FIXED MY PROBLEM:
I had my router set up on a 5G network instead of the usual (albeit older) 2.4G technology.  Everything in my house has worked very well under this configuration: iMac, iPhones, iPads, MacMini and even ATV.  HOWEVER, the communication between the Homesharing computer (iMac) and the ATV was horrendous!!!
I switched the ATV and the iMac to the 2.4G network and VOILA!!! Everything streams at a reasonable time/quality!

    PROBLEM SOLVED!
    I have a WNDR3400v2 (Netgear) router.
    Log into the router.
    Go to the advanced tab.
    Click on the setup button.
    Click the WAN setup link.
Check the 'disable port scan and DoS protection' box.
    Click the 'Apply' settings button.
    Next:
Make certain that your ATV and the machine that is set up for homesharing are BOTH on the 2.4G network.
Reboot EVERYTHING. (Router, ATV, Homeshare computer)
Ding, ding, ding... Problem resolved!  Thank you Apple tech support!

  • HT204291 Airplay mirroring. Macbook 2012 retina display. Unable to see desktop on television, audio works perfectly. Both OS on ATV and Mac are running latest versions

    Airplay mirroring.
Macbook 2012 retina display. Unable to see desktop on television, audio works perfectly. Both OS on ATV and Mac are running latest versions.
    Firewall set correctly (allow incoming...)
When I click mirroring to turn it on, teh Apple TV screen goes blank (from its home setting)
    Any help appreciated.

    Hi!
I figured it out! It was a firewall issue.
I use Handsoff and I checked it before i wrote here. There was no "user defined rule" that denied the communication but when i changed to "All rules" the program displayed several rules regarding AppleTV and its IP.
So if anybody has the same problem make sure you see all rules of your firewall and get rid of the AppleTV related rules generated by the program itself. You dont need to update to the latest iOS on the AppleTV!
I hope that I can help some people with this info to fix the problem.

  • Why is it not possible to use airplay mirroring on earlier macbook pro models with Mountain Lion?

I know there are questions alike mine, but if anybody knows some new information on this, please let us know.
I've been looking forward to this release of the OSX, especially the built in AirPlay mirroring function for the Mac Pro, which I've been missing ever since I bought the Apple TV.
Now finally when I went to download Mountain Lion, I accidentally search google, and find out that AirPlay mirroring is only supported on early 2011 Mac Pro and later?
What are the earlier users going to do? I have an early 2009 model of the Mac Pro, and I just wan't to know if I'll be able to utilize the new AirPlay mirroring function or not, which determines whether or not I'm going to upgrade my OSX version
Hope someone's got news on this one.
    Best regards, Thomas

My iPad 4 does not show up on my TV screen when in AirPlay mirroring mode using WiFi.  The iPad displays AirPlay set to TV with the Mirroring On (green).
My iPad IOS software is 8.2 and my Apple TV software is at 7.1.  The TV displays the Apple Menu.  The “Settings” does however displays the General menu allowing me to see:
    Apple software:          7.1 (7003)
Apple TV:                   Model No. A1464, Part No. MD199B/A

It does not display the iPad screen but when I use the BT Sport App I can hear the sound but there is no video.  I have searched the internet for a solution to no avail. The problem first arose when the IOS was at 8.1+ but it worked correctly briefly when I updated to IOS 8.2.  Can you help please?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.
