AirPlay & Mountain Lion

I have the full set of Apple products. iPad 2, iPhone 4 (x2), iPod Nano, Shuffle and Touch and iMac. I have decided to upgrade to Mountain Lion and then I purchased the Apple TV for watching the olimpics through the internet.
Can someone within Apple Inc. explain me why it is not clearly indicated that a 15 months old iMac would not work with AirPlay? It is not only me the one upgrading to this OS mainly because of this feature. I am really happy with Apple products, but sometimes when I have to find third party solutions like AirParrot I am wondering if should be back with PC and hundreds of options for each of the problems without waiting for updates which in the end, they didn't even work for a 15 months +2,000$ computer...
Regards,
Dani M.

Sadly, Apple employees do not respond to questions on the forum. There is a page on how Airplay works in Mountain Lion, but I do agree, it could stick out a bit more.

  • Aggregated device with AirPlay @ Mountain Lion

    My current setup:
living room: AirPort Express connected to receiver
bedroom: Macbook Pro (late 2009) with Mountain Lion in combination with Spotify and/or iTunes
I would like to have the sound of spotify/itunes be sent simultaneously to and the optical out of my macbook and the airport express in the living. So I created an aggregated device using this support file: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3956# - I ticked the box on both AirPlay and Built-in Output but there is no sound getting transfered to the Airport Express when both are ticked together.
If I only tick the Airplay checkbox it works perfectly in the living room and if I only tick the Built-in Ouput in it works perfectly on the macbook. But not both checkboxes combined.
Screenshots for clarification to be found here: http://imgur.com/a/K0KND#0
screenshot 1) works as intended: sound on airport express via AirPlay
screenshot 2) does not work as intended: only sound on macbook pro
screenshot 3) works as intended: sound on macbook pro via Built-in output
So any clue why the setup from screenshot 2 does not work?
I reckon this has to be a bug. Can anyone else reproduce this?

This is actually not a bug. To put it simply, what you want to do isn't supported. Not just by Apple, but more so by the software you're using (ie: Spotify).
By checking off both devices, you are effectively creating a single device with 4 outputs: L and R on Mac, L and R on Airplay.
This issue is in telling which audio streams to go to which output, and that level of audio routing is not something that is built into most software. Spotify will just go off of your system default, which will just route the audio to the first 2 outputs it finds (L and R on your Mac in this case).
Even if you could route the audio within Spotify itself, this wouldn't help your issue, because essentially what you're asking for is your 1 stereo audio stream to be copied to all possible outputs. This too is not a supported feature.
You may be wondering at this point "Then what good is this aggregate device option?!"
It's really designed for audio engineers that have several different audio streams and several audio devices connected to their computer. They may want to route audio streams to several different locations, which is why you'll notice that "Configure Speakers" button in your screenshot. Apps like Logic have native support for this and you can do all sorts of routing within it. Setting up an aggregate device allows me to have several pieces of hardware connected to my computer, and instead of having to switch between which one I'm using, I can use all of them at once, and chose different audio to come out of different places (ie: surround sound).
Soundflower is your best bet, as it can easily achieve what you're looking for.
Hope this helps, and if you have any Soundflower questions, let me know.

  • How do I use the AirPlay Mirroing on my mac with Mountain Lion ?

How do I use the AirPlay Mirroing on my mac with Mountain Lion ?
I watched the video about Mountain Lion, but the airplay icon can't appear on my menu bar.
    WHY ?

    i have a MacBook Air (Early 2011)
and it doesn't support the airplay mirroring ,,, the only things that the failed to do is  " MENTION IT "
it wouldn't hurt anyone if they just say it's limited to Late macs ,,,, i really wanted that feature and i updated my mac so i can watch movies on my HD screen ,,,,
i hope they made and update for it ,,, otherwise i have to wait another 4 months to get a new macbook pro

  • Why is it not possible to use airplay mirroring on earlier macbook pro models with Mountain Lion?

I know there are questions alike mine, but if anybody knows some new information on this, please let us know.
I've been looking forward to this release of the OSX, especially the built in AirPlay mirroring function for the Mac Pro, which I've been missing ever since I bought the Apple TV.
Now finally when I went to download Mountain Lion, I accidentally search google, and find out that AirPlay mirroring is only supported on early 2011 Mac Pro and later?
What are the earlier users going to do? I have an early 2009 model of the Mac Pro, and I just wan't to know if I'll be able to utilize the new AirPlay mirroring function or not, which determines whether or not I'm going to upgrade my OSX version
Hope someone's got news on this one.
    Best regards, Thomas

Looks like I'll have to upgrade my mac book pro to get this feature to work

  • I have a late 2011 model MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion.  I love the AirPlay mirroring feature with Apple TV...BUT, how do I mirror with TVs that don't have Apple TV?  I used to run a cable from my mini display port to the HDMI input of a TV.

I have a late 2011 model MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion.  I love the AirPlay mirroring feature with Apple TV...BUT, how do I mirror with TVs that don't have Apple TV?  I used to run a cable from my mini display port to the HDMI input of a TV.  This feature seems to be lost in the Mountain Lion upgrade.  Did Apple feel that once Mountain Lion came out that EVERYONE would have Apple TV?  There are no settings in System Preferences/Display like there used to be...only for AirPlay Mirroring.

Running a cable to the HDMI port is still supported. (and still works on mine).
If the Arrangement tab in System Preferences > Displays isn't present then it doesn't recognize the physical connection.  Double check all cables.  If that doesn't work try a PRAM reset:

  • Airplay mirror imaging icon will not show up on my macbook pro even though i downloaded mountain lion. How do i get airplay icon to appear on my macbook pro?

i have a macbook pro (almost positive that its a 2010 version) and i got mountain lion. The BIGGEST AND MAIN REASON i bought mountain lion was so that i can do airplay, allowing me to mirror image what is on my mac to my Apple TV. my whole computer is updated as far as the displays and newer features but the small airplay icon will not show up on the top of my screen. therefore, not allowing me to mirror image what is on my mac to my tv... it is connected to the same wifi as my apple tv. idk what to do. could it be because my macbook pro is a 2010? desprately looking for help...please help me with this issue
    thank you

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404 AirPlay Mirroring requires an Early 2011 or newer MacBook Pro, so your MacBook Pro isn't supported.
To mirror your MacBook Pro's display onto the Apple TV, you can use an application like Beamer or AirParrot even if AirPlay Mirroring isn't compatible

  • The Airplay Icon is not showing up on My Taskbar After Upgrading to Mountain Lion

Please help.  I have 2nd generation Apple TV and a 2011 Imac but the Airplay Icon will not show up on Taskbar after upgrading to Mountain Lion.

Finally after trying to uninstall/reinstall (no luck!)
    I'm on Windows 7 64 bit.  iTunes 10.7   And I have a solution:
If found a thread about IPv6.
I followed the same directions on Windows 7 64 bit and it worked.
Disable IPv6 on _all_ of your IP ethernet adapters.
That includes Virtual Machines (VMWare... yes those too), including IPv6 for wireless.
Close iTunes.  Start iTunes.  Works.  Airplay Icon is back.
It looks like All of the AirPlay devices may have to be re-setup.  At the very least rebooted.
I found that I had to clompletely erase my DHCP addresses from my (non Apple) router.. and that fixed it.  Finally.
Even though this is for the Mac... I believe they are onto something.   Original thread link:

  • Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring doesn't work on newest MBP

    Hello,
I have a 15" MacBook Pro Mid 2012 with OS X Mountain Lion installed. When Apple TV is available, there is an AirPlay icon in the menu bar. When I enable AirPlay Mirroring, my Apple TV turns into black but sound is streaming. No image at all. I tried different screen resolutions but none of them works, my TV supports 1080p and my Apple TV is 3rd generation with newest software (5.0.2). When the AirPlay Mirroring is enabled, there is a high upload speed so I believe the image is actually streaming. And there is no update for my Mac system. When I use iTunes to play a video, then that video can show up on the Apple TV, but besides that, mirroring doesn't work. My Apple TV has no issue when working with iPhone and iPad AirPlay. Do you have any ideas about this? Thank you so much!

    Hey,
I have the exact same problem. Read at least a dozen forums, and wasted 3 hours solving it.
Finally, a simple 'restart' solved my problem....
    Hope it will for you.

  • Upgraded to Mountain Lion, can no longer use airplay

Last week I purchased Apple TV (I believe its 3rd Gen) and had it all working fine, until I decided to be 'clever' and upgrade to Mountain Lion so I could use the mirroring in AirPlay. Prior to the upgrade I could stream brilliantly through itunes, including movies, to the tv via our Apple TV.
After the upgrade iTunes intially kept popping up every time I would attempt to play a movie through airplay and say it couldn't find the Apple TV. After a few hours of pulling my hair out, restoring the Apple TV, restarting my MacBook a million times and whacking the keyboard for effect - the AirPlay icon has now totalling disappeared from iTunes. After a bit of investigation, I discovered that my Mac is actually mid 2010 and thus I understand incapable of mirroring through Mountain Lion! I've read that uninstalling Mountain Lion is actually more a case of wiping my laptop and starting again. I'm really hoping to avoid that!!
Is there a way I can still use AirPlay in iTunes with Mountain Lion and if so I'd appreciate some direction on how to get it working.

fixed - found out I had to turn off IGMP Proxy in my FiOS home router.  Why, I don't know.

  • With Mountain Lion, airplay no longer works, why not?

The only thing that has changed is that I went from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
Have mid-2010 iMac, 3 Airport Express', 3 powered speakers.  Was able to send music to three rooms.  Firewall was on.
After upgrading to Mountain Lion I noticed the firewall was off.  I turned it back on.
I tried sending music via the Airport Express'.
Got a message that my firewall settings were preventing Airplay and that I should turn the firewall off.
That seems likde a bad idea.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I am haveing this exact same issue. I have plugging in 3 monitors and tried two different VGA to mini displayport and nothing is working. I recently bought a Acer monitor and it work for an hour and now it back to doing the same thing.
When I plug the VGA adapter in to the monitor the monitor think its not connected to a computer then when disconnecting the VGA adapter the monitor thinks it is connected to a computer.
NEED SOME HELP!!! at the point of all my hair is pulled out.

It is stated that mirroring requires recent hardware (2011 or later)

However you can still use 3rd party solutions like Airparrot which do it via software

Now, my MacbookPro is not recognizing the AppleTV. The Airplay option in the menu bar and the display is gone. My MacbookPro and AppleTV are connected to the same Wifi and they have both been restarted and updated to the newest software! Why is my MacbookPro not giving me the Airplay option?! Please help!
