Airplay music issues everywhere

I wonder, Airplay is nothing new nowadays, but nevertheless I have issues playing music all the time. I click the airplay icon on my device, it stays blued-out (selected) for a few seconds and unselects itself. No music. I have to try like 20 times before AppleTV finally accepts and plays music from either my iPhone or iPad 2. I use Airport Extreme and AppleTV2 at home.
At the office we have a few base stations connected to speakers and it's the same - sometimes the music plays straight away, but most times I have to selected the stupid airplay icon many times before it even makes a sound.
I don't expect this to be a problem in my install as I have the exact same issue on all my devices (iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad, iPad2) on all networks I've had - Airport Express base extending a Wifi and an AppleTV2 connected to Extreme.
***** for sure

I am having the exact same issue with Iphone 4 and iPad 1st gen.  I can view video, photos, and use the remote app just fine.  Also I'm not having an issue with the icon, it is there and detects the Apple TV but music just doesn't stream.  Or more accurately audio isn't streaming.  Not even non-music apps or games are working.

  • HT204291 Apple TV has huge lag when airplay music from iPhone 5, but video streaming is just fine.

My new iPhone 5 has trouble with airplay music, however, it did perfectly with video sharing.
Symptoms: In "Music" app, turn on airplay, tv screen shows the current playing song. But, it has a huge lag, time jumps every 2 second instead of continously roll over. Switch to "Pandora", same issue. But with youtube video, both video and sound appear very normal.
I tried with my old iPhone 4, no problems at all. I'm pretty sure there's something wrong with the 5. Any idea how to fix this?

Same here. Streaming from my MBA 2012 to apple tv3 works flawlessly, but any type of streaming with iphone 5 has huge lag. I have 10 mbps of internet dl speed and a cisco N broadband router.

  • I'm also having a music issue.  When my phone is attached to the computer (mac running 10.6.8) it looks like my music is there but its gray and I can't play anything.  I've tried to delete it and it won't let me but it does not show up on my phone.

By the way, I have tried shutting of the display switching in the power settings.  That was basically the only real answer I found anywhere.  It didn't work.

  • Using a radio app to Airplay music through my Apple TV. Works, but after some minutes, the Airplay audio output setting switches back to iPad. Why? Solution?

I want to use a FM radio app to Airplay music through my Apple TV (by using the synchronizing function). Works, but after some minutes, the Airplay audio output setting switches back to iPad. Why? Solution?
Why don't use iTunes? Because this just needs to many handling in order to get it where i want it (in general, this whole idea of doing everything online just works likes... ). An app is easier (that's why it is invented).

    Hey AKfishgirl,
Thanks for the question. The common variable here is your Wi-Fi router. Let’s check to see if the commonly used ports are being blocked by a firewall on your router:

Do you really mean the latest, as in 11.0.1?  That was supposed to include a fix for Airplay.

  • Can I use an Airport Express to airplay music without using it as a Router?

We have recently switched ISPs and our Airport Express is no longer being used as the router. Is it possible to use the device itself to airplay music from a computer without having to set it back up as our router?

Yes. Please checkout the following Apple support article for details. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4587

If i have a home full of Apple TV's and Airport Express' can i  airplay music in every room at the same time?
Or just one device(room) at a time?
It seems there is a lot of home theater systems where they all hook up to one "control" and then disperse to the different locations per instructions..
Is this possible with all apple products?

From iTunes using Multiple Speakers (you can control with the Remote app on iPhone/iPad too), but not from AppleTV itself.

  • Issue w/ Airport Express (new gen) - cuts off Airplay Music

I'm having this really frustrating issue with an A1264 Airport Express: whenever I play a song from my iPhone (4S), it cuts out every 30 seconds or so, and takes about 5 to 10 to recover. I've tried downgrading it to 7.5.2, but it only made matter worse.
    Thanks in advance,
    Darie

PS: It plays back fine when streaming from PC. However, my iPhone streams just fine to another Airport Express (from the Apple Store). Any help would be awesome :)

  • IPad cuts out and stutters on AirPlay music but iPhone does not?!

Hi folks, hope you can help with this problem, it's a little weird.
I bought an Apple TV a few days ago and have been enjoying streaming music from my apple devices onto the hifi system connected to the TV.  It works great except for one particular use-case, which is really frustrating.  Basically, I can do everything from the Apple TV, stream HD content, Netflix etc. all good.  From my iPhone I can do everything over AirPlay, stream music from iTunes, from Spotify, stream high quality video from YouTube or off the device itself, all works perfectly.
On my iPad 2 however everything works EXCEPT streaming music, it's bizarre.  I can stream a high def video from YouTube onto the iPad and AirPlay it over to the ATV and it never misses a beat.  I can mirror my screen onto the TV and stream games like Real Racing HD with no issues or lag whatsoever.  However when I try to stream music either from iTunes or Spotify from the iPad it stutters (cuts out) every 30 seconds or so, making the music intolerable.
The weirdest thing is that I can queue up the same track on my iPhone 4s and on the iPad 2, play it from the iPhone and it works perfectly, pause that, play from the iPad and it's a complete mess.  Similarly, when music is stuttering and cutting out on the iPad, I can switch directly to the YouTube, or BBC iPlayer app and stream high def video over AirPlay with no sound or video problems, then switch back to the music - back come the cut outs. It's driving me mad, I want the iPad to be the device everyone uses to play music from, especially for parties, but at the moment I have to get my phone out every time.
So it's not a bandwidth problem or a wifi signal problem (because video over airplay is fine) and it only affects music and it only affects the iPad.
    Any ideas?!?!
I should state that all the iOS devices have the latest apple software and I have already tried resetting the iPad, the ATV, my wifi router etc. etc.

    "Sonos" your Airplay
    Hi,
This observation elicited a Eureka moment. After months of problems with our airplay I had worked through almost every suggestion on the net to little or no avail.
As a result of this post I reconfigured one of our access points as a dedicated airplay network. Brilliant. We have now had 2 weeks of perfect airplay.
If you are reading this, you are probably fairly tech savvy. You therefore probably have an old router in the garage, shed or attic.
Get it out, dust it off and connect it to your network as an access point (Ethernet cable and a good internet search on your router). Set it up on an empty wireless channel as "*****airplay" or whatever suits you and connect the airplay clients (airport express, Apple TV, airplay speakers etc.) to that. Keep everything else on the original wireless network.
Interestingly, this is how Sonos have approached the wireless music solution.
This has worked brilliantly for us, I hope this helps others in a similar predicament.

Ps - This is a good work around, but , come on apple - it shouldn't need a degree in engineering

Variety of IOS devices-  phones, ipods,iPads, MacBooks et al.

  • Airplay Stuttering Issues - Troubleshooting Help

    Hi all,
I've been having some Airplay problems for a while and all of the other forum posts or articles I've found online haven't helped. Here's a complete list of what works and what doesn't as well as my current WLAN settings.
Any ideas would be incredibly appreciated!

Had the exact same setup at my previous residence (suburban house) but am now having these issues in my new apartment (city)
    WORKS
Video Airplay from iPad streaming apps (YouTube, Hulu apps)
All Apple TV (3rd gen) direct streaming (iTunes Radio, Netflix, Hulu, etc.)

Setting MacBook’s audio output to Airplay (stutters)
    Spotify streaming from iPhone 5s
    WIRELESS SETUP

It seems like I've done everything that Apple suggests in its wifi router suggestions
**This problem existed before I disabled the 2.4GHz channel and I made the decision to disable it throughout this troubleshooting process.

    Hello the_Tobman,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
In order to troubleshoot performace issues with AirPlay between your devices, please follow the steps below.
Resolve performance issues with AirPlay or AirPlay Mirroring
If you are experiencing intermittent playback or significant network lag with AirPlay or AirPlay Mirroring, it could be due to a weak Wi-Fi connection, interference, or the distance between the Wi-Fi router and your iOS device, Apple TV or AirPort Express.
    Try these suggestions:
Ensure that other devices are not trying to stream to the same Apple TV at the same time.
Ensure that your Wi-Fi router is set up with the recommended settings for the best performance.
Certain external devices, such as microwave ovens and baby monitors, may interfere with a Wi-Fi network. Try moving or disabling these devices.
If possible, try to locate your Wi-Fi router in the same room as your iOS device and Apple TV.
If your wireless and wired networks are the same, try connecting your Apple TV to the router via Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi.
If the Wi-Fi router has an external antenna, check to see that is it connected properly and in good condition.
Use the Wi-Fi network troubleshooting guide to resolve interference and other issues.
If you are using iTunes, please see these troubleshooting guidelines.

  • Airplay Connection issues - An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device "x". The network connection failed.

I recently upgraded to a new MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion, and got my Airport Express (802.11g) out of the closet and set up an AirPlay network for my speakers.
All worked well for the first while, but recently I've been having an inconsistent problem with this: "An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device “my network name”. The network connection failed."
Since it came up, more often than not, I can't connect.
I can play without issue from my iPhone, and from my iPad.
I looked around these forums, and found a couple threads dealing with this from 2011, with no clear resolution to them.  No one with Mountain Lion seems to complain about it, though a few people mused about whether Mountain Lion might fix the problem.
I'm running iTunes 10.7(21), and don't recall doing any upgrades to it that might have brought this about, though I can't say for sure.
My Airport Express is updated to firmware version 6.3, which I believe is the last one issued for the 'g' Airport Express.
My wireless network runs off an Airport Extreme 802.11n (Second Generation) with verion 7.6.1 firmware.
My Mac has 10.8.2 on it right now.
Hopefully some of that info might help sort this out - any replies greatly appreciated!

One quick update.  A workaround that was mentioned in one post did seem to work - if music is started via the Remote app it seems to connect fine.
And I'm not sure if I dare upgrade to iTunes 11 given the firestorm of bad impressions I see, including some that relate to Airplay functions...

  • Airplay audio issues since Yosemite

I have been using Airplay for streaming music from my devices to an Airport Express with an optical out to my stereo.
This has worked marvellously until Yosemite update. I have the following issues:
    - No more icon for Airplay in the menu bar on top of the screen (so I can't see which audio source is selected or choose from there)
    - iTunes randomly choosing either internal or Airport Express as a source of sound (if then set to Airplay it is stable, but only iTunes)
    - Other programs (VLC, Youtube, Skype) also randomly, but mostly not, choosing Airplay as a source of sound
    - Sound disappearing all together and no sound source working in 3rd party and, after using 3rd party software iTunes (work around: open iTunes, select Airport Express and then return to the software, mute and un mute the volume)
Most topics relate to Apple TV, but I don't use apple TV and therefor there is no specific fix I found useful. Funny is that also randomly my phonecalls are now over my stereo or on my computer or with no sound, this due to the built-in FaceTime calling from computer function. Very annoying to miss calls like that.
Anybody has a more permanent workaround? Until Apple updates Yosemite?

  • Airport Express 802.11g Airplay Connection Issues

My dad has had an AirPort Express 802.11g hooked up to his stereo for a couple of years now. Uses it only to stream music. Our WiFi network is run by an older AirPort Extreme 802.11n (2nd Generation). Express firmware is at 6.3, as high as it can go for the g models.
2 months ago, I got my dad an iPhone 5 running iOS 6, and upgraded his MacBook to run OS X 10.7 Lion so he could sync and use iCloud and all that stuff. From that moment forward, connections to the AirPort Express are awful or nonexistent for most devices. Many times after you tell iTunes or the Music app to connect to it, when you hit play nothing will happen. Sometimes the progress bar will move, but no sound will play. Other times the sound will start, go for ~5 seconds, and then cut out. No issues with staying on the WiFi network.
Devices AirPlay DOES NOT work properly with:
    - Dad's MacBook (final-gen plastic model) running OS X 10.7
    - Dad's iPhone 5 (iOS 6)
    - My iPhone 4S (iOS 6)
    Devices AirPlay DOES work with:
    - Dad's older iMac running OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard
    - My MacBook Air running OS X 10.8.4 Mountain Lion
None of his music is on the iMac, and the concept of doing a VNC to make it work would be far out of his level of understanding.
Is this a case of me just needing to get him a new AirPort Express for full compatibility, or is there another workaround? Eventually I'm going to get him off of his MacBook and up to something more currently, like my Air in September when I upgrade.
This is practically the only thing my dad uses his computer for, so any help I can receive to get this working would be MUCH appreciated.

  • Syncing iPhone with iCloud - Music issues

I have all my iTunes music on my new iPhone but I can't get the music to show up in the iCloud. Any ideas?

depends if you live in a country that supports free-of-charge itunes re-downloads.
It is not available everywhere due to copyright issues with the Music and Film industry.
your music on your device is not syncing or uploading anywhere. If any, there is this re-download option from within the idevices itunes store. See above, not for everyone.
