AirPlay no longer working reliably on Snow Leopard

I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.8 with latest patches installed, including iTunes 10.6.3. Mac Mini with 8GB RAM. All components connected to home network via wired Ethernet (no wifi involved). Components use fixed IP addresses.
I've been using AirPlay with my AVR very reliably for couple months to play music using Home Sharing. I have also ATV as well as AE, which I've used for whole home audio setup. It's awesome and I've been very happy with this setup.
I've had the system unplugged from about middle of April 2012, and replugged in the middle of July. No changed components, and with no hardware changes in the home network. Since then however, AirPlay no longer works reliably.
The symtoms are as follows:
1. I start iTunes, get the AirPlay icon, select the AVR destination, playback works fine
2. On the AVR, I switch to another audio input (like ATV, or PS3), which obviously makes iTunes to stop playing the music
3. From this moment on, iTunes is no longer able to play music to _any_ of the AirPlay destinations, i.e. not to AVR, not to ATV and neither to AE - if I hit Play button in iTunes, no error is displayed, just the song position in iTunes doesn't advance, and no sounds comes out of the remote speakers; if I switch to local (computer) speakers, it works
If I Quit iTunes and start it again, it again works, until AVR source switch. For sure, this makes for mighty hassle to the extend it's barely usable at all.
The problem can be triggered any time, happens always - there is no difference, if the triggering sequence is run after several minutes or after several hours of playback.
I've tried several obvious steps to fix this, but none has made any difference:
1. before switching audio source on AVR, stopped iTunes playback, either directly in iTunes or via Remote app
2. networksetup -setv6off hint from forums, for WiFi and Ethernet
3. tried downgrade of iTunes to 10.6.1 via Time Machine
4. switched off firewall on Mac Mini
5. connected Mac Mini with the AVR directly via known working cable (ruling out switches and any cable faults in between), also tried to connect them to the same network switch
I've also tried to run tcpdump on the ethernet interface when the iTunes is in the non-working state, and indeed there is no network traffic between mac mini and the AVR. Apparently iTunes doesn't even attempt to send the data to the AirPlay device. I see that there are several multicast packets sent by the AVR during this time, apparently some kind of Bonjour stuff.
Any hint what might be wrong, or another idea how to fix this? Was there any known-buggy AirPlay update to Mac OS X during the period?

Okay, so tried one more thing and found the culprit - the problem no longer appears after I switch off 'Allow iTunes audio control from remote speakers' preference in iTunes. Apparently this problem happens due to an interaction between the AVR (Denon AVR-1912) and iTunes.

  • LaserJet printer no longer works after installing Snow Leopard

Since installing Snow Leopard, my LaserJet printer no longer works.  Spent 5 hours on the phone to Apple Support without any satisfaction.  Any suggestions?  I'm desperate.......

  • Aperture 1.5.6 no longer works when using Snow Leopard.  Help!

I never upgraded to Aperture 2. This has prevented me from using RAW files on my Nikon D90 (despite the RAW Compatibility Update, it did not apply to the original Aperture).
Now, to my dismay, Aperture does not work on Snow Leopard. This is just great, because my entire collection of over 20000 photos is stored in the library. While I am aware that the photos are preserved in the Aperture library, I am aware of absolutely no way to easily access them for export now that I have Snow Leopard installed and I'm fearing for my photography collection.
I am not willing to downgrade my OS just for Aperture, but after two serious issues with the original Aperture program, I think I am going to switch over to Lightroom. Aperture's workflow was excellent, but the fact that a copy I paid good money for is being phased out in extreme manners like this, so much so that my photo library is in critical condition, makes me leery of future iterations of the program. I understand something like PowerPCs being phased out with the release of Snow Leopard. That makes a lot of sense, because it's old technology. But I feel like Apple simply ignored people who had the original version of Aperture and only supported the newer version.
I may have to resort to installing Aperture on my friend's laptop that is still running Leopard, exporting all the images, and then importing them into iPhoto in the meantime or something.
Is there any way I can get around doing this? Is there an easier way to access my files in the Aperture Library without going through the program? Does Lightroom have an easy way to import from Aperture? If I bought Aperture 2 instead of Lightroom, would I be able to import Aperture 1's Photo Library right into Aperture 2 and still preserve everything?
I'm really worried. Thank you for reading/responding.

I ran into the same issue as well - I had an old academic version of 1.5 which did not even have an upgrade path to 2.0. What's worse is that there was no way to recover my RAW/master files without rolling back to OSX 10.5. After much frustration and reading Apple's responses in these forums, I decided to try out Adobe Lightroom and I'm liking it a lot now.
I used a 10.5 install with Aperture 1.5.6 in a temporary partition to get the RAW files out. I probably will not spend any more money on Aperture and will pay the extra $ on lightroom as it seems to be more versatile and worth the money. Especially the new integrated export UI is neat.

  • Will the newest version of Safari Mavericks work properly with Snow Leopard?

Will the newest version of Safari Mavericks work properly with Snow Leopard?

Are you asking if you can install Mavericks on a machine running Snow Leopard?
    Upgrade to Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) model number 2,1 or higher
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Xserve (Early 2009) model number 3,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported.
    Application Compatibility
You can also check which applications are PowerPC by going to the  menu, select About this Mac, click on More info…, then click System Report and select Software/Applications.
If you do decide to upgrade, make sure you do a backup before installing.

  • Home computer is Lion, Work computer is Snow Leopard

My home computer is Lion, my work computer is Snow Leopard. My work computer needs to stay Snow Leopard becuase of a major program which runs the presspress department is not supported with Lion yet - so I cannot upgrade yet. I also jsut got an iPhone and want to use iCloud so that all three of those two computers and my iPhone sync together.
So, if I use iCloud for my home and my iPhone, what does that do to my work computer running Snow Leopard? Can I still get my mail just like I always do through "Mail" at work? I guess I just need to know what will change for my work (Snow Leopard) iMac?

You do not lose your mail account when MobileMe terminates in June. However, when you move to iCloud you will not be able to sync your calendar or contacts with the Snow Leopard computer. You may want to read the following:

  • I have a MacBook White.  Everything worked great with Snow Leopard including Mathematica, and all Pogo games. I downloaded Lion two days ago and now neither program works.  The box states that I need J/Link, and/or java runtime.  Help.

I have a MacBook White, early 2009 model, just downloaded/installed OS X Lion.  Everything worked well with Snow Leopard - Mathematica, pogo.com games. Now, with Lion, I am getting a box that states I need J/Link, and/or java runtime.  Software update feature states all software is up to date.  Help.

What about the incredable lag time from clicking on a program to the time it opens (or the time till the loading screen starts)? I would just chalk it up to slow hardware but they load real quick in windows 7 and once this bad spot is loaded the program runs so fast and nice afterword. Maybe some tweeks? I wonder if this would happen in Snow?
The coment "few outdated programs" Ive seen alot its not just a few its a lot and since games are not Apple's strong point I would think they would want to keep as many as they could...
An example of the rants you will see from a lot here. Don't be put off as these problems are generally user specific, and these same old comments come out after the release of every OSX I can remember. When Lion is upgraded  to the next OSX you can gaurentee these forums will be full of people screaming about how great Lion was. Happened with Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard.
So come to think of it you may be better off Googling sites that give you unbiased views on Lion, rather than expect any positive comments here. For every one complaint there are probably 100,000 people with no issues.

  • Airplay no longer working on iTunes 11.1.3 Windows 8.1

I have a PC connected by ethernet cable to a router, which is sending a wireless IPv4 signal to an airport express on my home network, which is in turn connected to some speakers. I also have an Apple TV connected to the same network. Airplay worked fine in the previous version of iTunes, but since 11.1.3 airplay no longer works properly.
On a fresh reboot of the PC & opening iTunes, the airplay icon appears, and airplay works as normal. However, after an arbitrary amount of time (usually between 3-10 minutes) the airplay feature becomes unresponsive, and the only way to remedy it is a fresh reboot of the PC.
However, I can play music from my iPhone through the Airport Express to the speakers, and I can mirror audio from my macbook through the AE to the speakers, but iTunes can't see anything with airplay (no speakers, no Apple TV) and the remote app on my iPhone iOS 7 can find the Apple TV, but can't find my shared library on the PC.  So it's not a proble with the AE, or with the router.
Other PC users with a similar issue who are connecting to their router by WiFi have reported a that turning off IPv6 appears to be a usable workaround, but I can report that it does not work for me when connecting to the router by ethernet cable.
Also, the Airport utility can see the AE after a fresh reboot, but again after a few minutes it can no longer see the AE.

yes this is happening to me....
    Same scenarios..

  • I took Lion off my Macbook Pro and put Snow Leopard back on and now I can't access Mail or iPhoto. How do I get Mail and iPhoto to work with the Snow Leopard I just put back on?

Hi. I was having slowness problems with my Macbook Pro and thought I would re-install Lion but put Snow Leopard back on by mistake. I bought the computer used with Lion on it and don't have access to the USB drive or a username/password to reinstall Lion. Now I can't access Mail or iPhoto since I put Snow Leopard on.
Is there a way to get my Mail and iPhoto working again with Snow Leopard or do I have to "re-upgrade" to Lion?
    Thanks!
    Steve

You can't. When you converted those libraries to Lion's format, you lost the ability to go backwards. Unless you saved a bootable backup./clone or Time Machine backup of your previous SL installation, you're up the proverbial creek w/o a paddle.

  • Airplay no longer works with iTunes

Airplay no longer works with iTunes 10.6; try to stream to speakers connected to Airplay device--use to work fine. Now, in iTunes, the icon in the bottom corner actually says 2 speakers, as it should, but when I open it it only shows speakers connected to computer directly. I have tried re-installing the AirPort utility and configuring it in every which way. I have tried turning off IPV6 in the network. Nothing seems to work.

I noticed this too and think it's by design. The new master volume slider in the AirPlay window is set at the highest volume in your list of speakers. Drag either the master volume or your external speaker slider to max, and you should get normal volumes out of your Airport Express speakers.
Unfortunately, the volume slider on the iTunes window seems to be the master volume now, rather than just the volume for the computer. So if you mute the computer using that slider, you mute all speakers. To mute just the computer, you have to do it though the AirPlay speaker list now. Unless I'm missing a preference setting somewhere... thought there used to be something in iTunes or Airport Utility that let you toggle this behavior, but I don't see anything now...

  • HT4437 airplay no longer works...

    Hi
I have a bad wifi connection in the house so bought a powerline netgear booster- the signal is now much better but airplay no longer works. Airplay is set up with speakers throughout the house (wired in) with panels on the walls in different rooms to switch it on and off . After reading up on things I thought it may be because our devices playing the music are now on a different wifi network than the airplay. Can anyone confirm this for me and let me know if there is anything I can do to rectify the problem... PLEASE.
    Thanks. x

They do need to be on the same network.

  • Font not working after loading snow leopard.

My font named Smash is not working after loading snow leopard.  Is there any way to fix this?

I suspect you're talking about a free font called Smash. Read Kurt Lang's paper on font management
    <http://www.jklstudios.com/misc/osxfonts.html>
and especially his strictures on free Windows fonts. The free Smash is a good example of what his talking about. It's a bad, poorly made font. Trash it ASAP.
If you want to check it with Font Book, use  File > Validate File…, then locate smash.ttf and proceed. You cannot use File > Valide Font, because that command works only with installed, 'working' fonts.

I have MAC OSX Snow Leopard. 10.6.8.

  • Please help Apple??? It worked fine with Snow Leopard??

I recently upgraded to Lion and now cant see my Windows 7 laptop in network? Or see my macbook Air 2010 on my win7 laptop. Please help Apple??? It worked fine with Snow Leopard??

You're not addressing Apple here, you are addressing a user based community.  An Apple employee may read your post but he/she will not officially respond to it.
You didn't say if your networking is Wi-Fi or USB Dongle based so I'm assuming Wi-Fi in this response. If you do a search of the forums you will find that quite a few are having Wi-Fi issues with Lion--things that worked fine with Snow Leopard are flakey or don't work at all with Lion so your problem may be another instance of the Wi-Fi issues in Lion.  If not, then perhaps someone with knowledge of your specific issue will post.  I see my other Macs (MBP, 24" iMac, 27" iMac all running Lion) fine but I don't have a PC to test.
