Airplay not working on Airport Express N in Extended Network

Hi
I have a setup as in the diagram below. Internet Router connected to my Airport Express N which creates a N-class network. Then I have an Time Capsule in another room that extends this network. My iMac is connected to this Time Capsule using Ethernet (WiFi is turned off completely).
iTunes is 10.6.1 (7)
Airport Express and Time Capsule have the latest firmware (v7.6.1)
Internet, sharing and other functions are working fine, just Airplay from the iMac doesn't work anymore to the Airport Express. I've tried lots of solutions, and this just seems to be broken. I've submitted to Apple feedback as well explaining the situation and that this doesn't work.
If I add/remove a password or enable/disable airplay on the Express, it does reflect in iTunes. It also shows that the Airplay is locked/unlocked (see image) and also shows it as a visible audio destination. But when you activate it from iTunes, it doesn't ask for any password (if enabled), but it just displays the "connecting" dialog for about 1 minute and then closes the window without any error and just does nothing. It's like iTunes cannot communicate to the Airport Express, although at the same time I can connect to it's internal configuration (edit) and also connect to the internet, my router's config using a browser, etc. without any problems. Also, if I'm using my iPad and iPhone, I can easily use the Airport Express from those devices, but NOT from the iMac.
I'm thinking Apple broke Airplay in this type of scenario.
Anyone with any ideas. I have a big hot paperweight called an Airport Express plugged into the wall in my bedroom now.

My problem is similar but not always the same.  I have a Time Capsule extended by an Airport Express which in turn is connected to my hifi.  My Imac is connected to the TC by Ethernet alone - no wifi.  The connection from the TC to my AE is done by a mains wiring ethernet connection which works superbly for TV streaming etc.  However, sometimes when I try to connect to the AE for music, I get an error message whicg says that is not possible to connect to the Airplay device.  If I restart the Imac, it connects immediately and without problem and will run for as long as I want.  Once stopped, I then get the error messge again until I restart.

  • Airport Express can only extend network, not create new one. Why?

I am sharing a flat with some friends. The shared broadband router is placed in the living room. To strengthen the signal and make it easier for me to manage, I bought an Airport Express, connected it to the shared router with an ethernet cable and set up a wireless network of my own in my room. It was working fine, until recently we renewed our broadband contract. The router had been replaced by a new one (I don't know why) and the network configration had been changed. Since then I was not able to use my own network. In the Airport Utility display, the light of Airport Express is green, but the light of Internet is yellow, and the status is disconnected. I tried to change various other configuration on the Airport Express, and all in vain. Until I switched the network mode from 'Create a new wireless network' to 'Extend a wireless network', the Internet connection was finally back online. But this merely extends the existing network and not what I want. Why this happens? Why my Airport Express can only extend a network, not create one?

Here is the situation on my Airport Express.
If I choose to extend the existing wireless network, the Airport Utility shows like this:
If I set up a wireless network of my own, what I get in the Airport Utility is this:
See my problems here? The Airport Express does not show anything in amble, but the Internet complains that there is no connection.
This problem did not occur before the broadband was renewed and the rounter was replaced.

  • Security not working on AirPort Express (XP)

I can set up the AirPort Express so that it runs an insecure connection to stereo speakers and it works fine, but it is, of course, insecure.
When I try to secure the connection, I get the following problem: my wireless program (Linksys) recognizes my connection (Apple Network) as having a signal of 60% and as being encrypted (designated by the little lock), but the AirPort Admin Utlity does not recognize a base station under "Base Station Chooser" (even when I rescan).
How can I get it to recognize the base station (i.e., my AirPort Express)?
Thanks for any help that you might be able to offer and sorry if I am using incorrect terminology.
    -Matt

  • D-Link DIR-615 (Rev H1(!)) does not work with Airport Express?

    Hi there,
I had my AirPlay working just fine with my Airport Express (AX) and my wireless N Router D-Link DIR-615 (Rev. B2). Now I changed my Internet provider and received a D-Link DIR-615 (Rev. H1) and I cannot find my AX anymore (I mean, it's still here, but the AirPort Utility cant find it!)
Are there known issues between those two?
(The Rev. H1/B2 is the Hardware Version of my D-Link DIR-615. The Firmware is up-to-date (8.01 I think))
The status light is a solid, beautiful green.
    I already tried the following:
    - restart the AX, the D-Link and my MacBook (10.7.2)
    - changed from AES to TKIP (found that somewhere in the internet)
    - Reseted my AX to factory settings and configured everything new. (via Ethernet)
    Probably interesting:
    - After resetting to factory settings and configuring everything new, the AX showed up in iTunes, but when I tried to connect with it, it kept me waiting for 1-3 Minutes and simply did not connect w/o error message. The AX disappeared after restarting iTunes.
    I'm running out of solutions..
Anyone a good question/suggestion or answer for me?
    greetings
    squob

Only way I see out other than waiting, is to hook he Drive to a Mac, (FW preferable for speed), then get Tri-Backup...

Which can be set to trigger Backups when Shares mount.

  • All-in-One Photosmart C5180 not working correctly Airport Express

I am new at this so please bare with me.
Last night I installed all the software etc and hooked the printer up via usb into my airport express. I did all the instructions as instructed. As I began to use the HP software, it would not recognize the printer.
So to sum up I can print from like a website or print from iPhoto etc. However I cant use the HP software to scan copy etc. When I go through the printer recognition software it isnt found in the first menu it is not able to find the printer. I have tried USB and Network. What am I doing wrong? Is there a guide somewhere that is more indepth for setting up the airport expresses with a printer? The guide included etc isn't as in depth as I would have hoped for.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. In addition, of the multi-function printers, that are supported, they are supported for printing only...the "advanced" functions (scanning, copying, faxing, etc.) will not work.
Take a look at one of these iFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility links, depending on which AirPort base station you have:
o 802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) or AirPort Express Base Station (AX)
o 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn)
If your printer isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.
Also, you may find the following Apple article helpful.

  • Time capsule base station not working with Airport Express

    Hi...
I have a network setup using the airport base station hat is part of my (older) time capsule.  I also have an older Airport Express.
My network is working fine...and looks like the first image below.  When I plug in the Airport Express and reset it...I get what you see on the second image.  The thing is...the airport utility is supporting the base station just fine prior to looking for the airport.  I presently have airport utility 6.3.2 and my airport base station has firmware 7.6.4.
    Any help would be great....thanks!

Your express is a G wireless model and not compatible with the N wireless TC.
You can use it but only by using it with ethernet and setting it up as AP.. you also need to use 5.6 utility not v6.. apple removed support for G wireless devices from v6.
    LOL..
    I was 2min late.

  • Time Warner Roadrunner in NYC not working on Airport Express...?

Just signed up for cable internet with Time-Warner in NYC. It's your standard cable modem with an ethernet cable. I can plug in and everything works (connection, Mail, Safari, etc etc).
When plugging said ethernet cable into my Airport express, however, the signal is strong as can be but the light stays yellow.
Internet connect says I'm connected to the internet via airport but the airport seems to disagree.
I'm set up in the airport admin util to connect via ethernet and DHCP (like the TW folks told me too). They say I don't need to fill anything else in and it should work....
I was on the phone with the Applecare folks for 45 minutes yesterday trying every combo of restarts that we could think of before I had to go to work....
Anyone have any other suggestions? The cable guy checked the aiport and ethernet boxes in the network prefs but that's the only thing that changed on my computer. And I've changed it back and forth to see if THAT was the problem.
The other interesting thing is that when I plug the ethernet in directly from the modem and have airport card on, it doesn't work. The ethernet cable direct works when the airport is off.... or is that irrelevant??

You can't run both connections at once, i.e., ask the computer to access wirelessly and wired.
My experience at a friends home (also roadrunner but not NYC) indicates that the TW folks were right. One thing they didn't tell you that they told us at the time was to unplug both the modem and the wap (the power cords only), wait 1 minute, plug the modem back in and then the wap. When I set mine up I spent an inordinate amount of time configuring everything manually and was a little chagrined when his connection came right up.

  • Mac OS X not working with Airport Express but Win XP is ok on the same iMac

    Hello everyone,
as the message says I am having troubles with Airport Express.
To say it quickly, I live in a house share in London, and everyone in the house enjoys the wifi without troubles. I do as well with my macbook from every point of the house.
The troubles are with the big iMac: with mac os the internet signal won't just work at all, pages take minutes to load with both safari and firefox, and most of the times the loading times out.
I thought it was a signal power problem, but the weirdest thing of them all is that... when I switch to Windows XP on the same iMac (and right now I am writing from that!) the internet works perfectly!
Then I switch to mac os again... and slow internet again!
Anyone has an idea of what could this be?
    Many thanks for the support

Yes, I just discovered this problem on my own machine.
I just wanted to check some settings and discovered that the behaviour of the GUI of Server Admin was somewhat "erratic": First this "no services are configured" message. Some of the configured servers were marked with the usual green "up and running" bullet, others dark grey - those were normally configured and running and clicking the appropriate line seemed to force Server Admin to check the actual state and then turned also green. But sometimes configuration pages were "greyed out", or while switching through the tabs Server Admin claimed that where were "unsaved changes" which should be saved (or discarded).
And then SMB: this was light grey, as usual when a service is not running and clicking on it I browsed through the configuration tabs - everything seemed ok (all my settings were correctly shown, configured as PDC with right domain name etc.) - and I started the service. Then suddenly the configuration settings changed to the default settings - no more PDC, but a "standalone server" with workgroup name "WORKGROUP"...
Looks for me, as if Server Admin lost it's "source" file for the configuration (the file in /var/db/smb.conf says, that it is automatically generated -- does somebody were the source file is stored?)...

  • Xbox 360 not working with Airport Express

I have a Airport Extreme router and I just bought a airport express so I can wirelessly relay the signal and hook up my xbox 360 to the express. I put it in WDS mode and it worked fine up until the xbox 360 ran the IP address test. It didn't pass the IP and my settings were on automatic. I thought the Express acts as a extension to the Airport but I guess not. Are there any settings I can change to make this work? Please help.

Same issue you have except I never connected the printer directly to my Mac via the USB. Went straight to the wireless Airport Base Station and connected the printer. Printer is found in "Printer Setup Utility" and connected via "Bonjour", unsure what that is. However the *"Printer Setup Utility"* is asking me to select: *"Print Using"* and giving choices such as CANON BJC-1000 - GIMP-PRINT v5.0.0 beta2. I am unsure what to select. And the printer still doesn't print even with one of these 20 choices selected. Any ideas from anyone?

  • BT Home Hub not working with Airport Express

We have just moved house and had BT Internet installed.  It uses the very latest Home Hub but this is causing the Airport Express to fail.
On occasion it works but more often than not the connect is lost and the MacBook/Airport Utility fail to see the AE's again.
What can I do to keep my Airport network up and running all the time.  I NEVER used to have this problem with my old set up at my home house.

Whenever you make a change on your network.....in this case a new router......you need to reset the AirPort Express back to factory defaults and then reconfigure it again to work in the new environment.
    Power down the AirPort Express
Hold in the reset button on the AirPort Express and keep holding it in for another 8-10 seconds as you plug the Express back in to power
    Release the reset button
Allow 40-45 seconds for the AirPort Exrpess to restart
Open AirPort Utility and click Continue to follow the guided setup to configure the Express to "join" your wireless network.

  • Imac internet not working with airport express

    Hi there,
I purchased an imac for my upstairs bedroom, but the signal from the time capsule was weak, so I bought an airport express and set it up. But still I cannot connect to internet even though after running the network diagnostics say I am connected to internet. My macbook works perfectly in the bedroom with all airport bars working, but the imac still has only two bars. I've tried everything, help!!

  • Photosmart C4280 not working with Airport Express

I have a Photosmart C4280 connected to an Airport Express Base Station via USB for wireless printing. I have two computers that I want to use for printing - an iMac and a Toshiba laptop running Windows XP. Printing from the Mac works perfectly and required zero configuration. On the laptop I created the printer using Bonjour. It located the printer on the network without a problem and I selected the driver for the HP 4200 Series printer. However, when I try to print, the print job sits in the qeue and eventually I receive an error message that it couldn't print.
I have disabled the Norton and Windows firewalls but that doesn't solve the problem. I have also tried some generic drivers but that didn't work. Does anybody have any additional suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

It describes a Vista/AirPortExpress/C4280 installation, but should be relevant to XP.
