Airplay on iPhone 3G?

This movie http://www.apple.com/ios/ says that "Airplay is a technology from Apple that is build into every iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch". Is this true? I'm asking because I've download iOS 4.2 on my iPhone 3G, downloaded the latest update to my new Apple TV device, and yet I still have no airplay sharing symbol on the playback control of movies on my iPhone. After installing these software updates, I turned off both my iPhone and my Apple TV, then turned them on again. Still nothing.

Not available on iphone 3g:

Sorry, your profile says iPhone 4. Best to be specific or have things up to date in order to avoid misunderstandings and prompt assistance.
In any case you are still using basic airplay. You need to enable mirroring and this cannot be done within an app.

  • Why no Airplay for iPhone 3G w iOS 4.2.1?

I'd like to understand the technical reason that Airplay is not available from an iPhone 3G with iOS 4.2.1. I understand that the button for Airplay is located in the multitasking tray, and supposedly the iPhone 3G is too slow for multitasking - please don't post a simplistic response like that.
I want to know (a) why the Airplay button is considered a multitasking feature, (b) whether there was ANY way Apply COULD have allowed the iPhone 3G to use Airplay but decided to blow us 3G users off instead.
I wish Apple could just be honest about this kind of thing. I had to find this info buried in support. This should have been a prominent part of the iOS 4.2.1 announcement, that the 3G wasn't getting Airplay, and that Apple would just rather stop making new software for the 3G altogether if all us stupid users would just upgrade already.

I don't know.. but I guess they tried it and found it slowed things down? And that'll be a lesson from a couple of OS updates ago they'll be keen not to repeat!
While it doesn't feel like multitasking, you're already running whichever App you want to print something, and then calling on AirPrint to do its thing. Given how resource-hungry desktop printer software can be, I can see why it's pushing it on a phone.. however cool

  • Airplay from iPhone/iPad unable to connect half of the time

I have a new 3rd Gen/1080p Apple TV I bought the other day.
I also have a iPhone 4S and a 'new' iPad.
All are running on the latest ios versions, including the iPhone/iPad ios version from yesterday which claims to have fixed some airplay bugs.
The problem is that more then half the time I attempt to use airplay, or display mirroring, it fails. In every case the little icon is always visible on the iPhone/iPad, so there isn't an issue with connectivity. I can try one time and it fails, then a half hour later it works, and then fails again later. When it does fail, I click on the airplay icon, and select Apple TV and it pops back to local display after about 2 seconds.
For Connectivity, the Apple TV is connected via ethernet (I've tried via WiFi also, no difference), and the iPad/iPhone is on WiFi obviously. There aren't many hotspots in the area, indeed I think this is the only one on 5Ghz. Also interference is not an issue.
The router is a Cisco E3000, and I've checked all it's settings and there is nothing that looks like it would interfere. Obviously I've tried turning off the Firewall (which should only be filtering inbound traffic anyway), and there are no issues with host-to-host communication within the LAN anyway - I have a WD TV live and a NAS which get along just fine.
I've never experienced any connectivity issues with the iPad - it's rock solid.
So - can anyone suggest anything that might be wrong?
It's looking like an Apple problem to me. I'm going to see if I can sniff the commuication tonight using Wireshark, but I'd expect it to be encrypted and therefore impossible to see what's happening.

OK, just got my above issue resolved by a Power Outage. Seems all it needed was a full reset of the Servers.
    Go figure.

  • Audio airplayed from iphone or ipad skips

Almost any time I airplay music from the iPod app in my iPhone or iPad(including the pandora app) skips on my new Apple TV set up. It even sometimes cut the song entirely. This is very annoying. Does anybody else have this problem? I will submit feedback to Apple for this bug. I don't know if it is an iOS bug or Apple TV's fault. The wifi signal is slightly lower in the room where my only Apple TV is than my computer. Video streams awfully slow also. My music should not be cutting out like that though. Music streams fine from my main library though.
    Bye and thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Sounds like a network issue to me, start by considering interference, you might want to try another wifi channel.

  • Audio only with Airplay on iPhone

Why can't I airplay videos directly from my iPhone 4S (on iOS 6) to my Apple TV. I only get audio and need to enable mirroring to see it, but the quality is poor this way.
I can airplay videos from my iPad 3 directly.
    Help please...

Thanks for your comment ...  So, as I understand it, the site has to activate this option in it's code.  If this is the same for audio and video, why would the audio work and not the video ?

  • Airplay Mirroring iPhone 4s?

I am just looking for clairification. In see people saying the iPhone 4s will be able to do mirroring through Airplay but it seems like in all the documents on Apple.com only talk about the iPad2.
So to clarify, is the iPhone 4s going to be able to be mirrored via wireless airplay?
    Thanks!

Now I can see it. but it should be on the main Apple TV page not all the way back here. I'm a smart person and it was way to hard to find. An update option that said all was updated. A product page that didn't highlight the issue. It's not the end of the world, but it wasn't up to Apple's standards.
Plus the "we're aware" of a problem, is not really making it clear what "the problem is" that they are aware of... so there is no way of knowing how it possibly relates to this problem, right?! It didn't offer any solutions, or acknowledgement of even the vague area of the problem. So it being in (pale) yellow with no information wasn't helpful.

  • Airplay from Iphone 3GS stops as soon as screen turns off!

When I play fe. a Youtube film from my Iphone 3GS via Airplay to my Apple TV, it stops as soon as the screen of the iphone turns off, or when I switch to a different program.
This is very annoying as this means that I have to touch the screen every 30 seconds to prevent it of going to standby.
Is there a solution? This can't be normal!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Yes and no.
It's normal that it should stop sending AirPlay when you switch to another App, only limited apps can truly multitask such as phone, music, etc, the rest are simply paused (and pausing when AirPlay is in progress disconnects AirPlay)
It isn't normal that AirPlay is disconnected when the screen sleeps, it doesn't do it on any of my devices, although I have seen it mentioned before but don't recall a solution being mentioned.
Any suggestions I could make would merely be fishing, such as whether your passcode lock is on/off, mine id off......

  • Youtube and Airplay with iPhone 5

I was trying out the youtube app on my new iPhone 5 and for some reason when I click the airplay icon and choose appletv only the sound works not the video on the TV. Anyone know why? I can play videos and show pictures from my phone through appletv just fine

I have the same issue, in that if I use it for a few minutes, I get a headache. It is clearly the active noise cancellation. The samsung galaxy s2 had the same thing, but there was a feature to turn it off. When I asked at the apple store they told me they did not think there was one. I think the phone is much better overall than the 4s, but I must fix this issue. Hopefully Apple puts out a way to turn it off.

  • How to rotate screen in airplay from iphone 5

I have an iPhone 5 and want to use airplay to my Apple TV.  I figured out how to stream, but when I use the ABC TV app to stream to Apple TV the picture is in the vertical position showing the show sideways.  There is no airplay button when streaming from the ABC app, that is why I had to stream the entire screen.  Anyway to get the screen roated on my HDTV so it shows in horizontal fashion?

    Is the orientation locked?

  • After updating my ATV to 6.1.1 no airplay from iPhone or iPad

This happens every time I update my ATV 2 to new software.
No airplay from iPad 1 or iPhone 4 ( running ios 7.1.1 )  - this time after ATV update to version 6.1.1
Tried everything :  resetting ATV, disconnecting cables, resetting router, turning network setting on ATV off/on  - no change
I can mirror my Mac Book Pro ( but no audio ) and play content from iTunes ( videos, photos ). iCloud photos work.
But I can no longer airplay content from Safari ( had no problem before this update ).
Followed all Apple's recommended troubleshooting but no luck.
    Can anybody help?

Sounds exactly like a network issue.
Is the router firmware up to date?
Are all firewalls and security software disabled as part of troubleshooting?
Try connecting the ATV via ethernet to rule out a Wi-Fi issue.

  • Troubles with AirPlay from iPhones to AppleTV

It feels like our AppleTV works worse and worse with every software update. It worked flawlessly when we first bought it: our iPhones would easily connect to the AppleTV and stream music.
Now, many software updates later, it takes numerous attempts just to wake up the AppleTV and start streaming music from an iPhone. I typically have to start playing music on my iPhone first, then select AppleTV, then wait a few minutes and repeat the process several times until it works.
Things have become even worse after one of the last updates: AppleTV still appears as an available device from an iPhone, but selecting it and starting playing music does not wake the AppleTV up. I either have to wake it up manually using the remote or keep it always on.
Also, after one of the latest updates, AppleTV stopped supporting gapless playback when music is steamed from an iPhone. It happens only if I steam from an iPhone to the AppleTV: If I used headphones, bluetooth devices, or stream from a Macbook Pro, then it's normal gapless playback.
I tried resetting the AppleTV numerous times with no improvements.
I'm quite sure that the problem is not with my iPhone: the same thing happens with all our iPhones (we have several in the house). Also, I have recently upgraded from an iPhone 5 to iPhone 6, and it's the same story with the new device.
I'm believe that there are no problems with our wi-fi network: AirPlay works absolutely fine from the Macbook Pro every time.
    Can anything be done?

Just a quick update: I went to the Apple store today and my AppleTV was quickly replaced with a new one, even though my unit was over 2 years old. I checked the new unit at home an everything works flawlessly so far.
If you are experiencing wi-fi issues with your AppleTV similar to mine, check if your unit falls under the 2013 replacement program, before any troubleshooting. I've seen quite a few posts on different forums from people describing similar issues who are unaware of the replacement program. Somehow it went under the radar.
I came across the replacement program only after searching the web for AppleTV's randomly turning off (another issue that became very common in the last few weeks before the replacement).

  • TS4085 AirPlay for iPhone 4 is working but not giving me the mirroring option

I have been installing apple tv's in a local elementary school and sync them up to their iPads. Some of them come up fine and work instantly w turning on the mirroring option. But a few of them the mirroring option comes up but does not allow me to select to turn it off and on. I brought one home to mess with it to try to figure it out better but I ran into the same issue w my iPhone 4. The apple tv shows up in the mirror selection but does not give me the option to turn it on or off. Would like some help with this if possible. Thank you for your time.

Ok. As I said that model does not allow for mirroring. As for the iPad it needs to be on the same network and ATV up to date as well as enabled for airplay.

  • Why did my airplay on iPhone and iPad stop working

My airplay stopped working on my iPad 3 and my iPhone 4S.  Could it have something to do with the most recent iOS update?

Thanks Curt.  I just figured it out.  I right clicked on Filmstrip which gave me an option of Reset in the drop down menu.  I clicked on Reset and got my Filmstrip view back.
