Airplay - playback in multiple rooms no longer in sync

In the wake of Mac OS X v10.8.3 and iTunes 11.02 upgrades (and after years of automatically working flawlessly and seamlessly), Airplay music playback no longer is in sync between an AppleTV v3 connected to a circa 2004 Pioneer Elite VSX-23TXHK A/V Receiver and surround sound system via HDMI and an Airport Express (no network, music only) connected to a much older Denon DRA-25 receiver and a pair of bookshelf speakers in another room. The systems are linked together with an Ethernet backbone separated by three Netgear gigabit switches (of two different vintages).
1. Why would this Airplay-based whole-house music system no longer "just work"?
2. How do Igo about troubleshooting the cause (and a solution)?
I know I could adjust the audio delay settings on the Pioneer receiver for the AppleTV's HDMI input, but why would I suddenly have to do this out of the blue? The very first time I plugged-in everything some years ago it all worked beautifully and always has. To my knowledge, this all started after upgrading to Mac OS X v10.8.3 and iTunes 11, but the recent installation of one new (replacement) gigabit switch and the latest Airport firmware update also could be factors. Here are some other relevant facts:
MacBook Pro (5,1) OS X v10.8.3; iTunes 11.02
- Airport firmware 7.6.1 on Apple Time Capsule acting as main router.
- Airport firmware 7.6.3 on the Apple Airport Express music device.
- Netgear GST724Tv3 gigabit switch (my new, central switch that replaces a Netgear GST724Tv2 switch)
- Netgear GS105 gigabit switch (the same older switch that's always been in the room with the Airport Express speakers)
- Netgear GS108 gigabit switch (the same older switch that's always been in the room with the Pioneer A/V Receiver speakers)
I actually have two other Airport Express units, another Time Capsule and a total of three gigabit switches on this rather complex network, but I have distilled the conflict down for the sake of simplicity. After upgrading all Airports to the v7.6.3 firmware, I had to drop the main Time Capsule Airport (router) back to v7.6.1 because a bug in the v7.6.3 firmware prevents the main router from working with the replacement switch I just installed — the Netgear GST724Tv3. Ironically, the power supply on my old Netgear GST724Tv2 switch died (and the unit wouldn't power back on) — AFTER I had powered it down to reset all my network devices in the wake of Apple's v7.6.3 Airport firmware update.
Sometimes, Catch 22 comes to real life.

Hi @Mitch8 ,
Thank you for your inquiry.
I understand that you are trying to connect a HDD via USB to 2.5HDD/SSD cable.  After uninstalling and reinstalling the USB root hub you had multiple failures on reboot including the fingerprint scanner and HP laserjet printer.
You could try doing a Windows restore back to a known good date to acquire your fingerprint scanner and printer back up and running.  If that is successful once you have your income tax and other documents  printed off, I would recommend doing a recovery back to factory.
HP Notebook PCs - Using Microsoft System Restore
You could also try running HP Support Assistant  to look for HP drivers and software.
You could try reinstalling the HP laserjet printer as that may also work.
Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 7)
There will be an option during the recovery to backup your personal files to prevent data loss.

  • Display Exchange multiple room / resource calendars in one SharePoint calendar - Group or Team Calendar

    Hi everyone
Setup: SharePoint 2013 Enterprise Server on-premise and Exchange 2010 Server.
I want to be able to pull in multiple room calendars from Exchange into one single SharePoint calendar. This would allow users to look at room availability in one screen and help them book their meeting at the time they'd like do it. Ideally they would be
able to book a meeting right from this calendar. I want to be able to do this out of the box if possible.
One other use is to set up the calendar for an entire team so you can see their availability in one screen.
know you can do these things in the Outlook client but I wanted to know if possible OOTB in SharePoint.
I've tried a bunch of things including activating the hidden feature for Group Work Lists (which is no longer accessible via UI in 2013, but used to be available 2010) and creating calendars with Group Team turned on, etc.
I've tried the hidden My Calendar webpart but that only allows to show MY personal calendar - not interested in that.
I've tried the page viewer trick and point the URL to the OWA url, BUT that will only give me ONE calendar and not multiple and I would have to set up OWA for single sign on - rather not do that if I don't have to.
I know there's a bunch of webparts you can buy (or code one myself) that does this but I was looking to see if there's something available out of the box.
    Thanks

    Hi,
From your description, you can overlay an Exchange calendar on a SharePoint calendar.
In a SharePoint calendar, in the ribbon, on the Calendar tab, click Calendar Overlays.
In the Calendar Overlay Settings page, click New Calendar.
In the Name and Type section, type the Calendar Name and select Exchange.
In the Calendar Overlay Settings section, type a Description for the calendar (optional), and change the default Color theme for the calendar (optional).
Screenshot of the Calendar Overlay dialog box in SharePoint. The dialog box shows the Calendar name, calendar type (Exchange), and gives the URLs for Outlook Web Access and Exchange Web Access.
Click Find to automatically fill in web addresses for Outlook Web Access URL and Exchange Web Service URL. If Find does not work in your environment, type the URLs manually. If you want this Exchange calendar to always appear with the SharePoint group calendar,
    select Always Show.
Click OK and then click OK again.

If i have a home full of Apple TV's and Airport Express' can i  airplay music in every room at the same time?
Or just one device(room) at a time?
It seems there is a lot of home theater systems where they all hook up to one "control" and then disperse to the different locations per instructions..
Is this possible with all apple products?

From iTunes using Multiple Speakers (you can control with the Remote app on iPhone/iPad too), but not from AppleTV itself.

  • Synchronized playback from multiple computers?

My roommates and I have about 5 computers all over the house. We can all access each other's iTunes libraries, but we would like to all be able to listen to the same playlist or songs at the same time as we wander around the house. There must be an app out there that allows the simultaneous playback from multiple computers, so that every computer can be playing the same song at the same time, no?

It looks like I could play my music in VLC, then broadcast a stream over the network, however, this won't account for latency, and won't do any synchronization of the other computers. Plus, I'm not really interested in using VLC for playlists and organizing my music... Is this in the works at Apple, by any chance?

  • Multiple room management -- best practice -- server side http api update?

    Hi Folks,
Some of the forum postings on multiple room management are over year old now.  I have student/tutor chat application which has been in the wild for 5 months now and appears to be working well.  There is a single tutor per room, multiple chats and soon to be a whiteboard per student, which is shared with the tutor in a tabbed UI.
It is now time to fill out the multiple tutor functionality, which I considered and researched when building, but did not come to any conclusions.   I'm leaning towards a server side implementation.  Is there an impending update to the http api?
Here is what I understand to be the flow:
    1) server side management of who is accessing the room
    2) load balance and manage the room access 1 time user and owner session from the server side
    3) for my implementation, a tutor will need to login to the room, in order for it to be available
    4) Any reconnection would in turn need to be managed by the server side, and is really a special case of room load balancing.
My fear is that at some point I'm going to need access to the number of students in the room or similar and this is not available, so that I'll need client functionality, which will need update the server side manager.
As well, I'm concerned about delays on the server side access to which might create race conditions in a re-connect situation.  User attempts to reconnect, but server side manager thinks that the user is already connected.
Surely this simple room management has been built, does anyone have any wisdom they can impart?  Is there any best practice guidance or any samples?
    Thanks,
    Doug

Hi Raff, Thanks a ton for the response.
I wasn't clear on what I was calling load balancing.  What I mean by this is room assignment for student clients.  We have one tutor per room.  There are multiple students per room, but each is in their own one-on-one chat with the tutor.
I'm very much struggling with where to do the room assignment / room managemnt, on the server side or on the client side (if that is even possible).  In my testing it is taking upwards of 10 seconds minimum to get a list of rooms (4 virtually empty rooms) and to query the users in a single room (also a minimum of users/nodes in the queried room).   If after this point, I 'redirect' the student to the least full room, then the student incurs the cost of creating a new session and logging into the room.  As well I intend to do a bit of xml parsing, and other processing, so that 10 seconds is likely to grow.
Would I see better performance trying to do this in the client?
As far as the server side, at what point does a room go to 'not-active'?
When I'm querying the roomList, I am considered one of the 'OWNER' users in the UserLists.  At what point can it be safe to assume that I have left the room?
Is there documentation on the meaning and lifecycle of the different status codes?  not-active,  not-running, and ok?  Are there others?
How much staleness can I expect from the server-side queries?
As far as feature set, the only thing that comes to mind is xpath and or wild card support for getNode() but i think this was mentioned in other posts.
Regarding the reconnection issues, I am timing out the student after inactivity, and this is probably by and large the bulk of my reconnect use cases.  This and any logout interaction from the student presents a use case where I  may want reassign the student return to the same room as before.  I can envision scenarios of a preferred tutor if available etc.  In this case, I'll need to know list of rooms.  In terms of reconnection failover, this is not not a LCCS / FMS issue.
    Thanks again for responding.

  • Playback of Multiple Videos Simultaneously -- onCuePoint

    Hello AS3 Gurus!
I have multiple instances of a video playback object (not an FLVPlayback component) on my stage (named "videoScreen1", "videoScreen2", etc...). I have separate NetConnections, NetStreams, and NetStatusEvent handlers set up for each of the video instances. Everything works fine (playback of each video in each instance happens as expected and the NetStatusEvent handlers fire off, as expected, for each of the video streams) except I cannot figure out how to separately keep track of the OnCuePoints events for each of the video streams.
Right now, I have just one onCuePoint function that reacts to the cuepoint info for all the streams at once (with the following code). This misses some of the cuepoints since it seems that it gets a bit confused as to how to handle all the onCuePoint events that fire off from all of the video streams. What I would like is to have separate onCuePoint functions set-up that react to only one stream. That is, have one onCuePoint function react to the video streaming on my "videoScreen1" video object, another that is reacting to my "videoScreen2" video object, etc... How can I do this?
    function onCuePoint(cpInfo:Object):void {
         var key:String;
         for (key in cpInfo) {
             trace(key + ": " + cpInfo[key]);
Or, should my question be: "What is the best way to handle the simultaneous playback of multiple video streams and keep track of onCuePoint (and onMetaData) events for each of the streaming videos?"
Any input would, as always, be most appreciated.
    Regards,
    ropeGun

    Hi!
I have had - and still seem to have the same problem. QuickTime 7 will start stuttering after the first change, ie. after the first movie. If you pause playback on and off, the current film will play perfectly - until the next change in the playlist. Then the problem reaccurs.
I cured the situation by going back to QT 6.5.2, where everything works just fine... but you have to do without a lot of nice stuff that QT7 has.
Also remember that QuickTime only supports a subset of SMIL, not all commands.

  • Java playback of multiple wav files in sequence - without overlap

    Hi there
I am asking for suggestions on how to do simple consecutive playback of multiple wavefiles using java. Right now I have each wavefile loaded into a clip, and the playback almost works, but with occasional errors where two or more of the files are played back simultaneously. I am doing busy-waiting using the clip.isActive() method in a while-loop in order to detect when a clip has finished playing so that the next one can start. I know that there are most likely some smarter methods of doing this, and I have tried some of them - e.g. linelistener but without getting it to work. If anyone can supply me with some example code on how to do this the right way, or could point me to some literature, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thx in advance.
    Jacob

    http://www.jsresources.org/examples/SimpleAudioPlayer.html
That example plays a file by opening it with an AudioInputStream and copying the contents to a SourceDataLine to play it...
It can be easily modified to allow for multiple files to be opened & copied to a single SDL, and is what I'd consider the "proper" way to do it. Clips are mostly useful for things like making a button go "beep" and things of that nature. Not especially useful for normal multimedia applications.

  • Remote Application with multiple computers multiple rooms

I am planing a whole-house music system and have played around with the Remote application. Seems to work fine in my setup with a MacBook Pro. Have several AiportExpress that I can see through REMOTE but they are not linked to speakers.
Here what I would like to do.
    1) Control each room separately, so each could have its own music playing or multiple rooms playing having the same song. I think currently one would need to build more than one loop of AirportExpress's linked to the same speakers. With two loops one could access two different libraries on two computers and so have two different songs playing in 2 zones.
    2) Control the loudness in each room. This could be a big problem. There is one master volume, but if one room is larger or has more speakers it could be much louder than the other rooms. So one would constantly play around with the volume when moving from room to room.
    3) Use more than one iPod Touch or iPhone in one set up, so that all people in the house can control the music. I only have one iPhone so I have not had a chance to check this one out. Is it possible to have more than one controlling iPhone or iPod Touch?
    Nice to haves
    1) An alarm function with the time and song selected and with zero volume slowly increasing to a set value over a set time.
    2) Cover flow on the iPhone or iPod Touch
    3) Remote launching of iTunes from the iPhone or iPod Touch
Any suggestions or answers are welcome. Thanks for your help.

There are no post activities available in ConfigMgr. Either use dependencies (so that the post activities application/DT has a dependency to the application itself - which is not the best way to solve it imho) or use a wrapper (cmd, ps1, vbs etc) that
installs the application first and performs additional things afterwards.

  • Streaming music for multiple rooms of a house

    Hi all,
I have an iBook G3. My question is, I want to stream music from my iBook to multiple rooms without having a lot of latency. The Airport Express (unless I'm wrong) can only stream one room at a time (I need more than one to be able to stream). I want to get the whole house wired for having Christmas music play throughout the house. If you have any products let me know. Thanks!

  • I am trying to sync Go Rock TRMS03SR Bluetooth Portable 3D Surround Speakers with my Airport Express or iTunes So I can play Music in Multiple rooms. I have a WiFi network, my living room speakers are connected directly to Airport Express.

I am trying to sync Go Rock TRMS03SR Bluetooth Portable 3D Surround Speakers with my Airport Express or iTunes So I can play Music in Multiple rooms. I have a WiFi network, my living room speakers are connected directly to Airport Express, so how can I get the wireless bluetooth speakers to play at the same time in my bedroom?

Did you ever get this to work?  My guess is that the speakers are out of bluetooth range at that distance.

  • Why is it taking so long to sync music from iTunes to my iPod?

Why is it taking so long to sync my music from my iTunes library to my iPod?

    Define "too long".

  • Why do photos take so long to sync with my iPod touch?

Recently my 60Gb iPod touch has been taking longer and longer to sync photos. Music, movies, apps, etc are all ok, its just pictures taking a very long time indeed.
I have tried resetting and erasing all data to start from scratch but I still have the same issue. For instance, I set the iPod syncing at 0830 this morning, went out for the day and as I type now at 2215, (well over 12 hours later) iTunes says it is 'optimizing photo 4103 of 9713'. Not only that, it only appears to be optimizing 1 photo every minute or so. Do the math, its going to take forever to complete the process!
I know its a lot of photos, but it never used to be problem. I should mention that my data is on a remote Netgear Stora 1Tb drive, but I dont see how this would make a difference, as music, movies, etc are copied over extremely fast. It is only photos that are causing me problems.
I would be grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction on this one.
    Cheers,

    Vmondo--
A couple of items, one of which has already been mentioned: Picture size. Another is picture type; jpegs seem to load faster.
iOS4 has several new bells and whistles, which may affect things. Things like folders, multitasking, etc. also consume processing speed. The iPod isn't like my MacBook which processes things really quickly. It should; it has more processing capability.
As a side note, part of the issue may be iTunes for Windows itself. (No proof, but the iPod is an Apple gadget, and as such works slightly better with a Mac. Slightly is the key word here.)
Finally...the iPod is, at the end of the day, a music device--not a pocket sized photo album. That it can hold every digital picture one has taken in the last five years is not really relevant. It can hold video clips, pictures, etc. but it's still a device for music and some well-crafted apps. The hope is that, in the next update of iOS4, the picture issue (because you're not alone) can/will be resolved.
    Now...
    1. I tried answering this above.
    2. You might want to check your settings for photos. It shouldn't be optimizing every time you synch, I wouldn't think, unless you are adding or changing pictures.
You can fill your iPod with whatever you want. From Computer Science 225: All an iPod is, is a fancy HD like what is on a computer. The more you put on the HD, the slower it takes to get where you want to go. This is why it is recommended if you get to with 10-15% of full on your HD, you remove stuff--or get a larger HD and migrate everything on the old HD to it. Even a SSD like the iPod touch has a limit, based on processor speed and available memory.

  • Is it true on Mavericks the Calendar can no longer be synced when connecting directly?

Recently I noticed that since upgrading to Mavericks, my iPhone Calendar is no longer synced with my Computers Calendar.   I found some hint on the support site that this is a "feature"?  Is this true that the iPhone Calendar can no longer be synced when the iPhone is connected with my computer directly via USB or via WiFi?

    tosmyrd wrote:
This is what I found too. So this means there is no actual possibility to Sync Calendars without using iCloud?
I don't think the article states that as you describe it here.  I think instead the article says that iTunes is no longer the sync agent for your calendar.  iCloud is one of the possible alternate methods (and happens to be the one I use).  But there are very likely other ways to perform the sync, such as Outlook, Google, etc.  It all depends on the specific calendar account you use.
