Airplay resolution, Apple Tv 3, iPad 3

Photos look less detailed when watched via Airplay from the new iPad compared to streaming from computer. At least when airplaying from the default Photos app. It looks as if the photos are scaled down to 720p. I would have thought airplaying photos is 1080p?
Thoughts?

When Atv is set to 720p, there is no difference between the photos. The difference is there only when Atv is set to 1080p. So it really looks like Airplay is scaling the photos to 720p. Maybe Airplay is 1080p only with video, not photos?
Unfortunately Apple never post these kind of specs about devices so we don't really know what happens.
If you can't see any difference your idea sounds plausible.
I do know that the original ATV1 used to resize/recompress photos to be smaller when synced to the unit (which had a hard drive), and we had deabtes about what quality these were being output at - ATV1 could handle from 480 i/p to 1080i/p for screen display for menus and perhaps photos/screensaver but for video playback it could not actually decode more than 720p at 24/25 fps even if set to output 1080p, it would internally scale the video to that.  When testing photos I had manually resized for various theoretical output resolutions I could not really see much difference between the synced 1080p suitable and 720p suitable image in terms of resolution.

  • Missing Option to Use Airplay on Apple TV on Ipad

I recently ugraded both my Ipad and Apple TV.  After doing this, I no longer get the option on my Ipad to use apple TV.  I live in Mexico so I access US TV now thru Google on the IPad and then move it to the Apple TV. This previously worked fine and I had the option to watch on my IPad or Apple TV.  Worked beautiful.  Now I just get the option to watch on the IPad, no option for Apple TV.  Network seems fine, router reset, all the different things.  I thought maybe trying to access USTVNow Thru Safari??  Any other ideas??

  • Airplay won't work with Apple TV and iPad 2

I have an iPad 2 running iOS 8.1 and an Apple TV 3 with the latest software and I can't use Airplay to send content to my Apple TV. I know there is no issue with the Apple TV since I can use Airplay to send content to my Apple TV using my iPhone 6, and Macbook, but not using my iPad. Oddly, Airplay will work on my iPad when I connect to my airport express, but not to my Apple TV - Apple TV doesn't appear in the drop down menu yet my airport express does! I have gone through all the usual fixes (restarting, restoring, etc. etc.) - to no avail, my iPad simply can not find my Apple TV for some reason. Any help would be greatly appreciated! cheers, d

I Have the same problem with iOS 8.2 and the latest OS for the Apple TV. My Apple TV is connected by ethernet as is my iMac. I can stream to the Apple TV from my iMac via this ethernet setup. But my iPad and iPhone 5s with iOS 8.2 won't connect even though I can see the AirPlay button and the sound a pics go blank on the iPhone and iPad .
I Have been suing AirPlay for several years with no prob,ms until now. I am running Yosemite OS on the iMac.

  • No AirPlay on Apple TV 2G with iPad 1G & iPhone 3G | AirPlay with iTunes 10.3.1 works

Hey there, I have an Apple TV 2G and I wanted to start using AirPlay with my iPad 1G iOS 4.2.1 and iPhone 3G iOS 4.2.1 but I don't see the button for connecting with my Apple TV as shown in the manuals.
I am using a Router (A) to connect to the internet and have a WiFi Router TP-Link TL-WR841ND (B) that is linked to the Router (A) by LAN. I am using a DHCP Server on both Routers, SSID is not broadcasting (B) and MAC Filter is off (B).
iPhone and iPad are connected to (B) by using  a static IP and have an static DNS and Gateway using the IP from (A). So all devices are connected in the same network by using (B).
iTunes connect probably with Apple TV 2.
OK, I hope to get some advices now that will help.
    Cheers, PaTim

You'll need a minimum of an iPhone 3GS for Airplay on a phone, the iPad will need iOS 4.3 at least for 3rd party apps and websites to work.
I'd update all your software and try again.

  • No airplay output to apple tv from iPad 2

I'm trying to stream a web video in an iPad safari browser and output it to my Apple TV (gen 2).  It says it's streaming on the iPad, but is stuck at 0:00, and the spinning icon on the TV never changes.  What can I try?  Both devices are updated to current OS levels.

  • Audio out of AirPlay port using apple Tv ad iPad

If I use AirPlay to play from my iPad to my Apple TV, via the Airport Express, can I get audio out of the port on the AirPlay?

No. This would be airplaying to multiple devices at once using an iOS device.  You can do this though in iTunes on a Mac if you have to.

  • AirPlay icon for Apple TV on iPad Keeps Disappearing

Please help! Since updating to IOS8 the AirPlay icon on my two iPads (Air & new mini) keeps disappearing. I keep rebooting the WIFi router and the AirPlay system works for a minute or ten and then just disappears. The WiFi signal is strong and the phone line is in order; very weird and deeply frustrating. It all worked fine with IOS7. AirPlay is switched on.
    Thanks for any help offered.......

    Hello there BradTheAce,
It sounds like your Airplay function is intermitent on iOS 8. I would use these troubleshooting steps from the following article to help troubleshoot the issue:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    Restart your iOS device.
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
    Tap  and Forget this Network.
Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on2. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
Update your device to the latest version of software.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware2. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including
previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
    recently used Bluetooth accessories
    VPN and APN settings
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

  • HT4428 My 128 Gb iPad cannot do airplay mirroring with Apple TV 3.  It only airplays with screen off (like iPad 1), and it can only do airplay with apps which have the airplay button.  No airplay button when sliding the bottom opened apps to the right.

My 128 Gb iPad cannot do airplay mirroring with Apple TV 3.  It only airplays with screen off (like iPad 1), and it can only do airplay with apps which have the airplay button.  No airplay button when sliding the bottom opened apps to the right!  Note : This problem persists after HDMI cable has been changed, and Apple TV was reset.  My another iPad 4 64Gb also on the same most updated ISO has no problem.

I restarted the iPad, it is okay now!  I think it is because I have been using the smart cover for too long, without shutting down the iPad completely!  It just works fine with the airplay signal appearing again after restarting the iPad.

  • Updated iPad 2 to iOS 7 lost Airplay to Apple TV

I updated my iPod 2 to iOS7 but now can not get connection through Airplay to Apple TV (2).
It worked fine on iOS 6.x, I have restored the Apple TV (2) ensuring latest version, all sharing and ID's the same, have made sure that Airport is on, checked wi-fi network groups the same, rebooted both Apple TV (2) and iPad and the router. Still no sign of Airplay in the Control Centre. Am I being really stupid here ? but can see no where to even try and make a connection. Interestingly can't see Apple TV from iTunes on PC either, turned off all firewalls as well just in case, still no luck.
Any one got any thoughts ?

Having same problem.  Apple TV 2 on same network as my iPhone 4S and iPad 2.
the phone running ios6 sees the Apple TV and successfully mirrors to it.
the ipad2 running ios7 does not see the Apple TV, and therefore no mirroring.
Pretty frustrating... and hate that there's no turning back to ios6.
Incidentally... I see the airplay box in the bottom of the control bar, but only Airport Expresses around the house show up, not the Apple TV.
Would LOVE to know a fix for this.

  • Ipad, iphone's photo slideshow airplay to apple tv disconnected every one minute...

I'm using ipad to play slideshow through Airplay to apple tv and encounter keep disconnect after 1 minutes, how do i solve this problem? I had tried several ipad also facing the same problem...

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

  • Airplay on Apple TV not working after upgrading to iOS 8 (3rd Party Apps)

    Hi
I hope someone can help me with this issue.
After upgrading the iPhone 5 and iPad 2 to iOS 8.1, as well as upgrading the Apple TV to the latest version, I now end up with ** some ** videos as well as photos that can't be played over AirPlay on 3rd Party Apps. (Note: I have no issues with 'mirroring' from the iPad to the AppleTV though.)
    1.   It can play .mp4 and .mov files;
    2.   It could NOT play .mkv or .avi files - there's audio but NO video
    3.   It can play the photos and videos from Apple's own apps (i.e. 'Videos' and 'Photos') however (i.e. with both audio and video)
    4.   It could NOT display any photos from 3rd Party Apps
    5.   This is happening to more than one 3rd Party Apps (i.e. no display of photos; and no video though there's audio)
Fyi, I've emailed to the respective Developers, but after reading some of the threads in this forum, I suspect that the root cause could be with iOS 8 (as well as the latest software update to AppleTV) as I didn't have this problem at all under iOS 7.
    Anybody has any solution?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Mac Mini (Mid 2011) AirPlay to Apple TV

Hi, everyone. First, thanks for reading my post. My question is about the Mac Mini and the new AirPlay feature that comes with OS X Mountain Lion. I've got a Mac Mini that I use as my media center. It has all of my movies, music, photos, etc. I use my Apple TV in my living room mainly for the GUI, but occasionally I need to remote-connect to my Mac Mini. Currently, my Mac Mini doesn't have a monitor - I access it through my MacBook Air using Screen Sharing. But I'd like to be able to see the desktop on my living room television through my Apple TV using AirPlay.
Currently, all that happens is that I'll get a green 4:3 screen through my Apple TV when I use AirPlay. The MacBook Air can AirPlay just fine, but no dice on the Mac Mini. I'm thinking it might be a resolution thing, but apparently I can only get my Mac Mini to go up to 1680 x 1050 (no 1920 x 1080). Furthermore, I'm thinking this is all an issue because I don't have my Mac Mini connected to a monitor. Before I got the Apple TV, I had the Mini hooked directly into my television with an HDMI cable and was able to get full 1080 resolution without a problem.
    So, my questions are:
    1) Has anyone ever had this experience with the Mac Mini and AirPlay?
    2) Can anyone think of a better, more efficient way to hook up my media center?
Best regards and I look forward to your answers! Thanks again for reading and have a great weekend!
    Steve

    Hey Spost!
You have explained exactly what happened to me last night.  I was afraid it was part of the 10.8.3 update or the latest ATV software update that hit this week.   I tried from my macbook pro and the airplay from 10.8.3 and the atv software worked fine.
Previously my mac mini was connected to a monitor in my basement but last night i made it "headless" and moved it to my "server closet"  airplaying prior to the move worked great ... then last night 4:3 Green Screen.
My guess is the computer needs to be connected to a external display in order for airplay resolution to figure itself out.   Via Logmein i could see that the Mirror mode wanted to use the resolution that fit the mac and not what was best for the Apple TV ... Even forcing the change made the setting go right back to this mac.
Looks to be a bug in a plist file that apple would need to fix as many people run headless mac mini's and now wish to AirPlay to their Apple TV's without the need for a external cable run.

After recent upgrade to Yosemite on Macbook air bluetooth audio cuts out and associated video stops with audio. Likewise with airplay and Apple TV. I have deleted all my saved wifi connections and restarted numerous times. I do not expect a resolution from the community, but hope to get the attention of Apple engineers. If you are having same problems or have a miracle cure I am all ears.

May start my own thread, but I'm having similar issues.
I've been using an old iMac (running 10.7.5) and Apple TV for years with no issues. Last week I bought a new Macbook Pro running Yosemite and have had audio issues multiple times. The weird thing is that sometimes it works flawlessly, other times (like now) I spend half an hour just trying to get a song to play.
My issues are: When I got to "computers" in Apple TV to stream my music, my music is sometimes chopper or intermittent, and I seen to know when it's going to happen based on the status wheel just before it plays. When I choose a song, the status wheel will spin for an unusually long time, usually an indicator that the audio is either not going to work, or stutter.
When it does finally pull up a song, the playhead sits at the beginning of the song for a good 3-5 seconds before actually playing. Then, when it starts playing, it's all downhill. It will play a few seconds, drop out, play a few more seconds, drop out, and then ultimately the playhead will keep moving across the song as if it's playing, but there's no audio.
Again, this is a new phenomenon never experienced by me. I've tried everything I could think of, some of them all at once:
    • restart Apple TV
    • restart Macbook Pro
    • quite iTunes/open
    • turn off Home Sharing on iTunes then reconnect it
    • unplugging and cycling both my modem and router
None of these have alleviated the problem.
The odd thing is, like this morning, the audio started up perfectly and never gave me any issues. It wasn't until later in the day that it started. Perhaps after the macbook pro had been put to sleep? Not sure.
Regardless, this is an annoying trait, one that's new to me and my system (as stated, worked flawlessly until my new purchase), and is 100% limited to either a) the macbook pro b) Yosemite or c) both of them.

  • Question about Apple's new iPad retina requirement.

Apple recently made it a requirement that apps support all retina displays for both iPads and iPhones.
What acceptable options are available in AIR for supporting the iPad Retina display and still meet Apple's new requirement?
    Here's my situation :
I've been working on a universal app using AIR 3.6 that works well in all iOS resolutions other than for iPad retina (2048x1536).
When building native support for the iPad retina resolution, the app performance is very poor (due to having to animate and manipulate such large bitmaps). The coding approaches that I've used are supposed to be good on performance, so I doubt that I can optimize things to the point where the performance would be acceptable using the larger art assets.
In comparison, when I use an older version of AIR (3.2) and let the iOS compatibility mode automatically scale up the app to fill the 2048x1536 screen, the performace of the app is just fine (and looks almost identical).
Would using this type of approach cause an app to be rejected by Apple now?
It appears that AIR 3.6 added the ability to restrict just the the iPad high resolution (without restricting iPhones ) using :
    <requestedDisplayResolution excludeDevices="iPad3">high</requestedDisplayResolution>
It seems that this would solve my performance issue, but I'm not sure if Apple's new "retina support requirement" would result in my AIR app being rejected if I used this approach to disable iPad Retina support.
Does anyone know if Apple will now accept an app that was built with iPad retina support disabled through this approach?
Another option that I've tried that may be a workable solution is :
During launch when 2048x1536 resolution is detected, the app loads all of the 1024x768 art assets instead and then scales up the app by a factor of two (using scaleX = scaleY = 2).
The above seems to generate acceptable performance. The artworks looks a little blurrier and less crisp using this approach due to the scaling, but is acceptable to me personally. As this is technically using "standard" resolution art assets and scaling them up, would taking this approach get rejected by Apple?
I'm open to any other options/approaches/suggestions to adding iPad retina support that would allow me to address the performance issues on iPad retina and still allow my app to get approved by Apple. I'm just a little bit confused on what constitutes an app having "iPad Retina" support. Does the app just need to be compiled with a newer version of the iOS SDK to get through the approval process, or does this mean something else?
    Thanks.

Seems like you have two options, if you are already scaling stuff down after launching at a higher res why not make it an option. Have a setting for "High Resolution" and one for "High Performance" the difference would is one would run in Retina mode and one would run in standard mode so users with iPad4 and iPhone5 could probably use the High Res but iphone 4 users can switch to the High Performance setting.
The way I have dealt with it is design everything to a 1024 width and 640 height, this is standard Kindle Fire resolution but almost all devices crop the app in a way where all the key features fit on screen, I just had an app approved 2 days ago by Apple using this technique so basically I am running 1024 graphics on the retina screen, they look great (we are only humans and we can't make out every pixel despite what Apple thinks) and the performance is nice as well. I think they worry about apps being stretched for some reason when apple ups a 1024 app to a retina width using their software it looks horrible but if it is done by the developer it looks great. Download a non retina app and try it on a retina iPad or export your app for Standard resolution and check it out vs exporting for high.
I think you will be fine either way.
