Airplay Stereo instead of mono?

I have the 2012 express got it today and hooked it up to my stereo that is connected to 4 speakers, 2 left and 2 right. But when I play music from my imac it only goes to one side of the speakers. How can I get Airplay to stream stereo instead of mono? Or is it impossible and I should just plug all 4 speakers into one slot. Thanks.

I suggest that you temporarily connect a pair of stereo headphones to the audio port of the new AirPort Express. If you get the proper output to the headphones, then either the audio cable or how you have it connected to your stereo may be the issue.
The Express' audio port supports either an analog or digital optical audio output. You would need to use a similar input at your stereo.

  • Design flaw in 'Play stereo audio as mono' of Universal Access Hearing-tab

The option to 'play stereo audio as mono' that comes with OSX 10.6 does not work as I expected.
When I enable this option it sounds like only one of the two channels becomes mono, while the other one does not sound mono to me.
It's hard to notice this, because the total sound does change to 'less' stereo.
I've done some testing with different soundcards and testing signals, and found out that when the option is enabled, the mono signals are routed incorrect.
While the right channel becomes mono, the left channel seems to be something else; I'm not sure if it's the original left channel of the stereo signal, though.
I have reason to believe that the resulting mono sound on the right channel correctly is the 'monofied original sound', but that from the left channel.
The resulting mono sound on the left channel sounds like the original left channel of the stereo sound, maybe added with the mono sound of the right channel.
Why do I think so? When using a sound card with more than two outputs, I can clearly see that sound is being sent to the second and the THIRD output, instead of the first and the second output, immediately after I enable mono. Resulting in output on THREE channels:
    original left
    monofied (left)
    monofied (right)
On my soundcard I can disable the extra outputs, and than I hear:
original left + maybe monofied right
    monofied (left)
    I think the programmer of this great feature made an 'off-by-one error', consequently sending the monified output to the wrong channels;
    to channel[1] + channel[2] instead of channel[0] + channel[1]
I don't know what happens to sound that is sent to channel[2] (the third channel) on a two channel soundcard.
It could be mapped to the the first channel, but that of course is speculation. Could be tested though, with the right audio signal.
I hope someone can confirm this. If more people experience this problem, maybe Apple can fix this so I can enjoy listening in mono.
I have tested this on the internal soundcard and three external firewire audio interfaces, of which 2 have 8+ output channels.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the quick-and-dirty test.
Your findings are not a surprise to me.
It would be more interesting though to not use one's ears for proof.
Also, I have reason to believe that this result is valid for any two channel audio interface.
With the test below I can proof that audio is sent to three channels instead of just two, when enabling "Play stereo audio as mono" on an(y) audio interface with more than two outputs (enabled).
The test takes a little longer than the quick-and-dirty test.
If you don't have an audio interface with more than two channels of output, you can still perform the test by installing Soundflower first.
Soundflower is a virtual audio interface with multiple inputs and outputs, and can be used as an audio router or audio patchbay.
    Get Soundflower from http://code.google.com/p/soundflower/ - it's free.
    Here's the test …
Open System Preferences, choose the Sound prefpane and select the Output-tab
Select any audio interface with more than two channels of audio outputs as your sound output device ( Or use "Soundflower (16ch)" )
    Keep the System Preferences open
    Start Garageband
    Create a new project
From Preferences select for Audio Input your interface-with-more-than-two-channels-of-audio ( Or use "Soundflower (16ch)" )
( selecting an Audio Output is not necessary, because we're not actually going to use our ears for proof )
Enable multitrack recording from the menu (Track / Enable multitrack recording )
Create four tracks as "Real instrument"; each one with an increasing Input Source: Mono 1, Mono 2, Mono 3, Mono 4
( the last one is just for verification )
Enable recording on these four tracks (if you can't select more than one, try enabling multitrack recording)
Open System Preferences, choose Universal Access (probably click 'Show All' first) and select the Hearing-tab
Make sure audio is played in stereo (unchecking the checkbox)
    Keep the System Preferences open
Switch to the Finder or iTunes
    Playback any song
Switch back to Garageband and check the meters on the individual tracks
( remember this is stereo, notice the number of channels with signal )
Switch back to System Preferences to enable mono (on the Universal Access prefpane)
Switch back to Garageband and check the meters on the individual tracks ( this is mono ! )
    End of test ...
You will see that in mono a third audio channel is addressed, while there should have been only two in both mono and stereo.
The signal strength of channels 2 + 3 seem equal, and channel 1 looks much louder.
This difference in signal strength is very noticable when listening to channels 1 and 2 on separate speakers or headphone.
What is that playing on channel 3?
I must admit (against my original post) that this test does not proof that the signal on channel 1 is or is not mono or anything else; that requires another test.
One can of course record these channels and do some comparisons and subtractions or some other clever tricks.
Hope anyone can second this, preferably with an actual audio interface like Apogee Ensemble, Motu, RME, Presonus, Focusrite, etc.

  • "Play stereo Audio as Mono"

I recently was tearing out my hair because I had mono checked (somehow). It was playing Mono through my Apogee Duet Audio interface, but playing stereo through my headphones jack on the core audio. I remembered it always worked fine in Snow Leopard, so I installed SL on a partition for testing purposes and sure enough the Duet played in stereo. So naturally I thought there was a problem with the drivers between Lion and the Duet. After much discussion with Apogee, frustration and online searching I found out about this "Play stereo Audio as Mono" business.
In your next update or release, please link "Play stereo Audio as Mono" in the Sound preferences pane as well. It is a major problem when your audio is playing in mono and you cannot figure out why because the option is hidden away in "Universal Access". As a non-impared user of OSX I have no need to go into "Universal Access".
    Thank you.

You could go around the issue by running a script at login to set this option. Here's a script I found on the net:
    --script begins
    on run
              tell application "System Preferences"
      activate
reveal anchor "Hearing" of pane id "com.apple.preference.universalaccess"
              end tell
tell application "System Events" to tell process "System Preferences"
click checkbox 2 of tab group 1 of window 1
              end tell
              quit application "System Preferences"
    end run
    --script ends
(It requires the "Enable access for assistive devices" pref to be enabled.)
Save it as an app in a convenient location (eg, <~/Library/Scripts>), and add it to your Login Items. It will run every time you log back in. Note that this is a toggle—if the preference is on, it will turn it off.

  • Audition CS6 - Stereo Panning with Mono Content

I'm mixing a stereo soundtrack for a feature film.  All dialogue and sound effects content is in mono and the score is in stereo.  All of my content is placed in stereo tracks (I learned the hard way that the panning feature doesn't exist in mono tracks), whether it's stereo or mono.  Even though Audition isn't a DAW, I assumed it would function just like any other multitrack application for mixing purposes, but it appears I'm wrong unless someone can tell me what I'm missing.
I've gone through and added volume envelopes throughout all of the dialogue tracks, and now I'm trying to start placing them within the stereo field.  The pan envelopes are there, but whether I move a clip to a static position in the stereo field (such as 50% Left) or I automate movement through the stereo field (start at 50% Left and move to 50% Right), none of the changes are actually taking place.  The panned track is still sitting there right in the middle of the stereo field.  Even if I adjust the pan knob on the track itself, the audio is sitting dead center regardless of where it's panned.
So as it stands, I have about thirty tracks of content, where all of the music is in stereo and every bit of dialogue and all sound effects are sitting right in the middle.  Needless to say, that's not a good approach for mixing a stereo project.
    What am I missing?

Yeah, that's why I'm so confused.  Here's how everything is set up:
All of my dialogue and ADR clips are mono, however they have all been placed on stereo tracks.  All of my dialogue and ADR tracks are being sent to a Dialogue/ADR Bus (mono).  The same with all of my sound effects.  Stereo tracks containing mono clips, all being sent to a mono SFX bus.  All of my soundtrack/score is being sent to a stereo score bus.  The three buses are going to the master stereo out.
When I pan the individual buses, it works fine, regardless of whether they are stereo or mono.  But when I work with individual mono clips in my Dialogue/ADR/SFX tracks, none of the pan automation works.
I might've screwed something up, but I originally had all of my mono material set on mono tracks, until I realized later that panning isn't an option with a mono track.  (All DAWs I've worked with didn't have this limitation, which is why I set it up that way.)  So I created a bunch of stereo tracks, copied/pasted the mono clips into those, then got rid of the mono tracks.
What's goofy is that none of the new stereo tracks I created have "Pan" as an option when I click on the "Read" drop-down and select "Show Envelopes".  My score tracks (the original stereo tracks I created when I brought everything in) DO have "Pan" as an option.
So, even though the new tracks are stereo (they have a pan knob on both the mixer view and the track header in the multitrack view) and there are blue pan envelopes on the tracks, there is no pan envelope in the automation lane, so I'm guessing that's why the pan functions aren't working on the individual tracks.
I just don't understand why the pan envelopes don't exist on the stereo tracks I recently created, but they do exist on the stereo tracks I set up from the get-go.

  • How to configure stereo outs to mono via Mainstage?

I'm currently running Mainstage through my Presonus FireStudio Project. The outputs are linked together (i.e. 1-2, 3-4, 5-6), but i need to separate the stereo tracks into mono in order to run one track to monitors and a completely separate track to speakers. Also, when i select a track to go through a certain out like 1-2, it seems to not mean a thing because I can plug the speakers into any other out (like 3-4 or 5-6) and I still get signal. Why is this?

Ah! Thank you, Sir! It was so simple!
The applet control panel for my mixer had all the outputs linked!
Would you also happen to know if Mainstage can route certain tracks to solely the headphone jack in my AI? I'm using the Presonus FireStudio Project AI.

    Hi,
I have the HP dv6t-2000 and I want to connact it with my home theater system.
I have a sony receiver - str-dh730 and when I try to connact the laptop to the receiver (HDMI) the laptop recognize the receiver only as stereo instead of surround (I have 5.1 speakers that working with all the other devices connacted to the receiver)
When I go to the "playback devices" and try to configure the receiver, the only option written is "stereo"
What should I do? (tried to replace cable and connacting throu other input buy nothing...)
    Thanks,

If that is the case Your laptop supports only stereo speakers not surround 5.1
    Hope this helps.

  • Changing the 1-2 stereo outputs to mono in logic

I want to assingn the outputs of each track in Logic individually so that it matches each channel of my recently purchased M-Audio Nrv 10 mixer (which also serves as my soundcard). Can't seem to figure out how to change the outputs (right below 'imputs' button and seen as'1-2') of each strip channel from stereo to mono. Is there an answer to this question? it seems to me, from the responses i've read in this forum, that the answer is still unclear. If you can help it would be greatly appreciated.

You can't change the outputs to mono from the output selection tab, but you can pan each output to route to the correct channel. Set track 1 and track 2 to have 1-2 outputs and pan track 1 all the way to the left and 2 all the way to the right, and you have mono outputs. Continue that with all of your outputs and they all will be mono. If you want to bounce to mono, either bounce the stereo pair and choose 'split LR' under 'stereo file type' or change the output channel strip to mono and then bounce from there. If you change the output channel strip to mono, the tag will still say Output 1-2, which you can just change manually, but if you highlight the channel strip and look at the information to the left of the channel strips, under 'channel' it will say 'Output 1,' instead of Output 1-2. Hope this helps.

  • Turning Stereo audio to mono

I have the Sony PMW-EXR1. The camera has 2 XLR audio inputs. I took some video using 2 lapel mics plugged into each of the inputs. Input 1 recorded to the left side and input 2 recorded to the right side. I want all audio to be turned into mono.  I can't figure out how to do this...ideas?
    Thanks,
    Dean

Also, audio that imports into Pr as stereo can be tagged as dual-mono by selecting the clips in the Project tab, and choosing Clip>Modify>Audio  Channels>Mono button.
You can only do this before you edit any clips into a Timeline.  Once your clip is in a timeline, this option isn't available.  But, after you do this, and you drag a clip to a timeline, the audio will map to two mono tracks, instead of a single stereo track.

  • Convert/Mixdown Stereo Wav to Mono Wav

    Hello,
i have a problem with automating Quicktime via Applescript. I´ve got thousands of two channel stereo interleaved pcm coded (aif, wav) audio files that i want to convert to split stereo files, i.e. mystereo.wav --> mystereo.L.wav AND mystereo.R.wav
I found a solution to save a QT-export-settings file with Applescript following these instructions: http://lists.apple.com/archives/QuickTime-Users/2002/Nov/msg00294.html. So this is how i made the export set to MONO!
My idea was to open the stereo interleaved file, set the pan to left, export to mono, then set the pan to right and export again to mono. I automated theses actions with applescript and it seems to work. BUT ...
Unfortunately quicktime exports 2.0 stereo tracks (one channel silent, the other with programme) instead of following the export settings and merge to mono?
    Am i doing something wrong?
    Why behaves QT this way?
How can i force quicktime to export mono files?
Thanks in advance for your answers.
    b.

Not sure about the Applescript part (I am just delving into that myself), but the method I use to output separate L and R channel mono files from a stereo interleaved in Quicktime is as follows:
    1) Open the stereo file, bring up the Movie Properties window (Command-J)
    2) Click the "Soundtrack" entry in the list, then click the "Audio Settings" tab
    3) On the right hand side of the window is a list of Channel Assignments.
    4) For your Left channel export, assign channel 1 to "Left" and channel 2 to "Unused" from the pop-up list.
    5) Choose "Export" from the file menu, select "Sound to WAVE" or "Sound to AIFF"
    6) Click the "Options" button, choose your setttings, and make sure that "Mono" is selected in the Channels setting.
    7) Name the file "mystereo.L.wav"
Repeat steps 4-7 for the Right channel (e.g. set Channel 1 to "Unused" and Channel 2 to "Right")
Let me know if you get anywhere with the Applescript, I do this manually every week to separate L and R channels for a podcast I produce, and would love to have a more automated way to deal with it.

  • Stereo vs. Mono Audio Tracks - Why?

I tink one of the most annyoying features of Premiere is the way it handles audio tracks.  I'm curious if this is just me or if anyone else out there is bothered by the same thing.
I work on a kids' show that has lots of music, sound effects and often 4 different mics for the actors at the same time.  Since I record 2 mics on each cam (R and L), I like to import everything as mono clips so it breaks up my audio and I can label who's on what layer/track.
Sometimes I end up with 20 different audio tracks.  Not because I NEED 20 layers, but because some of my SFX and music come in as stereo and others as mono and I can't put a mono-clip on a stereo clip or vice versa.  This is the part that drives me crazy.  I might need to add a 1-second swoosh SFX for some text coming in and I've got to go to layer 12 (scrolling way down), when just below the video there are 11 empty layers "available" but can't be used because they won't accept placement of that track because it's in stereo when the clip is mono.  Make sense?  So, really, instead of needing 20 tracks, I could EASILY get by with 10 IF Premiere had a way of not being so picky about whether a track is stero or mono and could just handle whatever you dish at it.

Maybe I have just used PrPro long enough, that I accept the Audio Tracks and channel-count. It makes perfect sense to me, but then maybe I am missing something important. If one does not have the necessary Audio Track, PrPro will create one for you.
This ARTICLE goes into much more detail.
Only thing that I would like changed, is the ability to drag Audio Tracks up/down, like on many DAW's. Otherwise, there is a little "dance," that needs to be done, to organize Audio Tracks.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Sharing a stereo track in Mono

    Hi -
I just upgraded to 10.0.2. In the previous version of Garageband, I was able to specify that when I wanted to share my track to iTunes, I could have it export in mono. I have to play my track on speakers that aren't reliably set up to support good stereo, so this is a pretty critical function for me.
Is it possible to export the track to mono? I've tried changing the input to Mono on the track, but then I lost the left side of my audio. I want it to play evenly all the time out of both speakers.
    Thanks!

If you center pan all the material in your sequence it will be effectively mono. The output is always two tracks at least. You could make the output dual mono and send everything to one track and leave the other track empty, but I don't think you can export just one track of audio. Is there some special reason you only need one track?

  • HDMI cable- plug into stereo instead of tv?

Can I plug the HDMI cable into my stereo receiver instead of the tv? I ask because the sound quality with the digital optical cable is very poor when I shut off tv and sound only comes out of the speakers? What should i do ??
    Thanks

HDMI audio and Minis can be quirky at times.
Have you changed the order of power-up?
I found in my system, I need to power up the TV,
then the receiver, then boot the Mini.
Also, if using some other source and then switching
back to the Mini, I end up in stereo only and have to
reboot the Mini to get surround pass tthrough capability
    back.
HDMI audio in general is at times quirky as I have seen
similar comments around and about for all types of
    equipment.

  • Merging clips turns stereo audio to mono

I've got a stereo audio file I'm merging with a RED Epic clip (with replace AV clip audio). Whether I merged by audio waveform or in point, the result is always a merged clip that has two channels, but is no longer stereo. It's like it has taken only the left channel and doubled it. Thoughts?

It's not a dual panned center mono file, there's something wrong with the way it sounds when left is panned hard left and right panned hard right. I've tried panning each channel hard the other way and it still doesn't sound like the original stereo file I've merged it with. Am I doing something wrong? Why wouldn't premiere just replace the AV clip audio with the singe track stereo clip? Why the need to break it out into dual mono? Is there a preference I'm missing or something? This seems unintuitive.

  • Workflow for moving stereo tracks to mono?

    Hi everyone,
I'm a relatively new Audition user (using the latest version of CC); I've been using it to create podcasts using the multitrack editor and flagging out footage with markers in the waveform editor. I recorded a skype conversation and I wanted to mix the audio for a new episode, and I'm hoping that someone can help me with a suggested workflow. In the screencap below, the audio got recorded with stereo channels, and what I am attempting to do find the quickest way to create a two mono channels from what is two stereo channels (although the right channel of one didn't include any audio) – and balance the audio levels between the two mono channels. Screencap enclosed of what i'm beginning with.
I know the multi-track editor can accomplish some of this using the bus feature, but I want to first get this audio right because i want to make markers in the wave form to flag out footage, so i figured that destructive changes to the audio are best. I'm aware that i can extract audio channels to mono and use the match volume feature for clips, but i'm wondering if someone might be able to point me to a quicker/better way.
    Thanks a lot,
    Quin

In Waveform view, use Edit/Convert Sample Type and just select mono in that section of the conversion options.
The balancing of levels between the two is best done in Multitrack where you can listen--though, looking at your waveforms, you might find it gets easier if you normalise (Effects/Amplitude and Compression/Normalise) to reduce that loud track down to levels closer to the quiet one before you start.
It's worth saying that, if your session is set up to end up in mono, you may well not need to convert your files anyway but this depends on your workflow.  If it was me, I think I might convert to mono (even if not strictly necessary) just for tidiness.

  • Splitting stereo tracks to mono for separate editing?

Does anyone know of a way to split a stereo track into two mono tracks inside of Logic Pro 8?
I'll explain my problem, I have a track made from samples of a song. In the track that I recorded, there is one particular sound that I can't get rid of no matter how hard I try. I recorded the passage with the ESX24 in stereo and I noticed that the noise is only on the left track. My first solution was to pan the track all the way right, create a duplicate of that and pan it hard left. Unfortunately, it loses a lot of clarity and texture when I use this method..
Looking on the forums, all I could find was instructions to bounce the tracks to split stereo, but I need them to form separate tracks within Logic so I can apply a LowPass filter to the problematic left track, then mix them back together as one stereo track later....
    Any suggestions?

You guys are talking about different things. The OP says he's using an exs24 instrument with a sample that has a noise on one side of the stereo field of a SAMPLE not an audio region recorded into logic. Samples used by the EXS24 are not added to the audio bin, only into the EXS24's RAM. You could pan the instrument track to the side without the noise, and then output the result to a bus track that is set to MONO. That will pan your one sided sampler back to center. You can also bring the sample into logic (using the browser) and then split it as eriksimon suggested, and then create a new EXS24 instrument using only the good side of the sample.
