Airplay - use built-in audio output while mirroring

Yesterday I tried to configure my headless mac mini to use airplay mirroring to my ATV3. This in general works beautifully.
The thing is, I use this machine as hifi-transport and want to continue using the local audio output (S/PDIF / Toslink / USB DAC) during mirroring.
I could not find any way of doing this. in Audio MIDI mixer, the sound output switches to Airplay as soon as I enable mirroring. If I then use the Audio MIDI utility to switch back oudio output to the built-in output, it automatically deactivates the mirroring session.
Even creating an aggregate and/or multiple output audio device in Audio MIDI utility and put together Airplay output and the built-in output, it does not work...
Anybody have any idea how to solve this?

I like to chime in on this one too as I was just about to create a thread of my own.
My current home situation:
living room: airport express connected to receiver
work room: macbook pro with mountain lion in combination with Spotify
I would like to have the sound of spotify be sent simultaneously to the optical out of my macbook and the airport express in the living. So I created an aggregated device using this support file: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3956# - i ticked the box on both AirPlay and Built-in Output but there is no sound getting transfered to the Airport Express.
If I only tick the Airplay checkbox it works perfectly in the living room and if I only tick the Built-in it works perfectly on the macbook. But not both checkboxes combined.
Screenshots for clarification to be found here: http://imgur.com/a/K0KND#0
screenshot 1) works as intended: sound on airport express via AirPlay
screenshot 2) does not work as intended: only sound on macbook pro
screenshot 3) works as intended: sound on macbook pro via Built-in output
So any clue why the setup from screenshot 2 does not work?

  • Audio Output while using Airplay

I have a rather unique requirement that has me stumped. We have an Apple TV driving a projector that does not have audio output so when we mirror the display from the iMac using airplay we want the audio output device to be "Internal Speakers" but that can not be selected in System preferences. Does anyone know a work around for this configuration or will I have to get seperate amplifier and attach it to the optic audio output from the Apple TV?
    Thanks
    Brian

Well, since I can't imagine this being a feature of Airplay I assume we're either hitting the limitations of the technology, or it's a bug. Knowing Apple I suspect it's a limitation of Airplay, perhaps because audio and video are sent out as an integrated stream?
I agree, this does suck, since all I have to use as audio is the tiny 1 watt speaker on my Epson projector! I can't even use audio out from the Apple TV, since all it has is that useless optical port. Very frustrating indeed.

  • No built-in audio output

Last week I connected via DVI port to a projector. From that time my built-in audio output has not worked. What would cause this? What is listed in the audio output window is "Digital output--built-in output.
I have all the updates and permissions done

    Hi Tony,
Try deleting these files: com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist and com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag these files from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. See if your audio output functions as it should.

  • Built in audio output (speakers) are playing through different channels.

My built in audio output (speakers) are playing through different channels. How do I make them both play through the same channel? It has something to do with the audio midi setup. When i click "Configure Speakers" on th Built-In Output I don't get the option of "-" for which channel the audio should go out of, I just get "1" or "2" as an option. This happens when i select them to be both stero and multichannel speakers. Any ideas on how to fix it?

Is there a red light glowing inside the jack? It sounds like a faulty jack. Read this:

  • How to set correct audio output while using external screen for presentation purposes over a wire

while trying to make a presentation or simply playing a video from my MacBookAir over thunderbolt/HDMI table to large screen I am experiencing problems with audio only being played from the MBA and not the soundsystem built in to that screen (unless using a VLS application and manually selecting the audio output target).
Please help in finding how to steer audio output device  using 2in1 cable such as thunderbolt?

    Hi jar9,
If you are not hearing audio over your HDMI/Thunderbolt connection, you may want to see if it is showing up as a selectable audio output as outlined in the following article:

  • Unable to use built-in audio on macbook

When I had a G5 with Leopard I had a similar issue, and after some googling I discovered that it can be fixed by simply resetting the PRAM. Sadly, that has not worked in this case.
Here's what's happening: I am unable to use the speakers on my macbook for audio output. Headphones work, and when I went to the audio output settings the only option available is "Digital Out." When I connect and disconnect headphones I noticed that it flashes to "Built-in Audio" for a fraction of a second before deciding for whatever reason to go to "Digital Out."
I have some idea what might be causing this; recently I installed a free version of ProTools that came with my roommate's M-Audio firewire box. It turned out the software was complete crap, and it made it impossible for me to shut down my computer without a hard restart. Annoyed by this, I uninstalled it using the program it came with, which fixed the restarting problem, but seems to have taken my ability to use my speakers (perhaps out of spite?).
I hope someone has an idea of how to fix this! It's driving me insane.

I've never used the iSight in VMware, but I think I know the solution: you need to install the BootCamp drivers. You can do this by inserting your Mac OS X installation DVD and loading it within your virtual machine. The DVD should give you the option of installing the Boot Camp drivers. Once it's done you'll probably need to restart the virtual machine, and then you're set. (Note: this is how it was with the OSX 10.5 DVD; I haven't done it with 10.6, but I assume it'd be the same.)
Why is this necessary? VMware is able to connect your hardware devices to the virtual machine, but they're not responsible for the hardware itself. Without the proper drivers, Windows doesn't know what to do with it. Luckily, Apple provides those drivers in the form of the Boot Camp drivers, and those will function even if Windows is running only as a virtual machine.
While I have not tested the iSight, I can verify that after installing the Boot Camp drivers, Windows is able to utilize Bluetooth properly if you connect it directly to the virtual machine.
    Hope it helps.

  • Do I have to use the same Audio Output and Input source???

In logic express 7.2.3 I can get everything to work fine except when I want to set my sound output to be different than the input device.
I want the Audio Input to be : "Roland USB device"
I want the Audio Output to be "Built in Output"
This works perfectly in Garage Band but not in LogicExpress 7.
As far as I can tell core audio in Logic only gives you the option to use the same device for input and ouput. This makes it impossible for me to record guitar or bass parts in Logic because in order to hear anything in Logic I have to set my systems sounds prefs to use my USB device for both Audio In and Out. This means the guitar is playing through my speakers regardless if LE7 is running or not... and when it is running I hear the guitar at speaker level which means I can't hear it at mix level or any of the effects that may be applied to it.
    Help please!
macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Thanks... I did that but and it works (sort of ) but now there is a HUGE amount of latency. The audio also starts to crackle after a while. I know this input device is a few years old and the latency could be better but it works completely fine with Garage Band so I'm not sure what to do.

  • Surround Bounce using built in audio

    Hi All
I'm just wondering why the bounce function in LogicPro 08 is limited to the available output channels of your audio interface. Performing a surround bounce while using the built in audio of a macpro or macbookpro will only yeild a -L and -R wav file and not create the -LS, -RS -C -LFE files.
I understand that you won't be able to monitor the output of your surround mix but this shouldn't imped the availability of performing a surround bounce to produce surround stems when using the built in audio interface of a macpro or laptop.
Pie in the sky - why not make the optical output on a macbook pro or macpro ADAT capable? Or for that matter, allow for on the fly pro logic encoding from logic to utilise the optical input on a standard HiFi amplifier to monitor surround.
    k.

AMS isn't just for MIDI. You can make changes to your audio interfaces and change clock masters and all that kind of stuff, right?
Anyway, the only reason I was in there was to try and find out why selecting 48 kHz is not an option on this Mac. I don't understand why that is.
My question is: Is it okay that Built-in audio is playing back at 44.1 when FCP is set for 48 kHz?
    Thanks

  • Tecra A3 106 Noise on Audio Output while Charging

    Hello all,
My Tecra A3 generates an annoying noise on line out/headphone output while charging the battery.
when it's unplugged, the noise goes off.
    Is that normal?
    Thanks in advance.
    Onur.

Hello there Pedro, please forgive me for my late reply, I was unable to test meanwhile,
and yeah, I removed the battery and booted my laptop with AC power. Result : the same sound.
I also noticed that, If i listen closely my charger unit, i can hear the same sound from the charger too...(It's obviously the same, but a hoarse noise)
Afterall, It's not distorting internal speakers, that happens when i use the line out for my amplificator.
Whenever I plug it out, I have no problem such as an annoying distortion voice on line out jacks.

  • Macbook pro 2012 isn't recognizing the built in audio output

It is only recognizing the headphones jack, even when it is unplugged, there are no red lights and when I unplug the phones it is just like they were plugged, I ow this because it doesn't change the volume like it was suposed to do if it was recognizing the built-in output

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First, try plugging and unplugging the headphones again, and check that "Internal Speakers" appears in System Preferences > Sound > Output.
If it doesn't work, reset the PRAM > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 This will reset the speakers settings, so it will work properly when you start in OS X. If not, open System Preferences > Sound > Output, and choose "Internal Speakers"

  • Using Built-in Audio/Mbox for recording on Garage Band - Need Help!

So I just found out that Pro Tools is not yet compatible with Leopard, so I'm working in Garage Band. I want to use live guitars and mics, and I'm curious about the inputs.
Obviously for guitars all I have is 1/4" cables. If I get an 1/8" converter for it, and put it into the headphone jack on my computer, will Garage Band recognize it?
What other interfaces for 1/4" does anyone suggest? I CANNOT get Mbox to work at all. All I get is 'Error code 28773.' Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks everyone -

  • Built-In Audio Output Speakers Don't Work

My Built-In speakers don't work on my Macbook Pro anymore.
I plugged headphones into the headphone jack last night when watching a film, now all of a sudden when I remove the headphones my built in speakers dont work.
When I try to turn up the volume I get the circle with a line through it telling me it can't be changed.
I went to system preferences and it says my speakers can't be configured and my Master volume track is un-highlighted so It can't be changed.

  • Noise on audio output when using the power adapter

I'm a musician and use my mid-2007 MBP 15" in my live rig. When I use the power adapter, I hear a buzz, sometimes accompanied by a slightly louder buzz that cycles on & off about 1x/second. There are a few weird things going on here:
    1. The buzz does not happen all the time. That leads me to think it may be noise in the AC line that the adapter is plugged into.
    2. The noise is heard when I use both the built-in audio output AND an external USB audio interface.
In any case, when I disconnect the power adapter and run my MBP on battery, the noise goes away completely. I can probably do this on most gigs, but I'm a little nervous since I run a FW drive, an external USB audio interface, and my midi keyboard (powered by USB) so I am putting a little heavier than usual load on the MBP's battery.
As I said, this may be a noisy AC line. Another guess is that it's the PMU inducing noise into the audio circuitry. I'm hoping a simple AC line filter can help me but I thought I would ask here first in case anyone else has dealt with this. TIA for any help!

I had a similar problem and fixed it with a $5 universal travel adapter. Yours might be different but here's my situation. Try it for little cost and see if it works.
I'm also a muso with an iMac running external KRK speakers via USB Mbox2. Previously I had a Macbook Pro and the same audio problem. I've been putting up with a very low volume, high pitch noise until now. I simply plugged the Mac power cord into a universal travel adapter which then goes into the wall. For Aussie users there is an adapter on ebay that will allow a 3 pin Aussie plug to go into female side and has a two pin Aussie male on the other. For US users you can probably get the same although there is a 59c product that will do the trick called a ground lift adapter. Applecare actually agreed this was the best fix and confirmed there would be no problems with power supply or Mac performance. What a gem ! God knows I've looked into all kinds of alternatives that could have cost hundreds instead of $5.

  • Is it possible to stream Video to Apple TV (via Beamer with no real audio output) and at the same time stream Audio to an Airplay compatible device? (Bose Soundtouch)

I currently have the following set-up:
    Ipad Mini Retina (with Airplay)
Beamer without proper audio output (picobeamer)
    Bose Soundtouch (with Airplay)
    Apple TV (3rd Gen)
When I stream a video via the Ipad, I either have the sound on my Soundtouch or Video via the beamer. Is there an option to have both at same moment? It really looks like I cannot have both at the same moment?
    Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, you can't split the Airplay stream as you would like to.
