Airplay via Airport Express with no router?

I'm trying to Airplay video from my iPhone or iPad to my ATV via an Airport Express. I want to use this in my caravan which has no internet. I just have the Airport express, ATV2 and iphone/ipad. No router, no internet connection. I have tried multiple configs on the Airport express but can't get it to work. Geeez apple, should it be this hard?
I just want both the iphone (or ipad) and the atv to connect to the airport express so i can stream video using airplay to the tv connected to the ATV2. I have tried static (192.168) network addresses and DHCP on the AE and tried bridge mode with the ATV connected via the ethernet port but the ATV either locks up or hangs on the "Waiting on Network Time" screen. On my home network which has internet access it all works fine.
Can anyone confirm that you can have a simple wireless network using an ipad/iphone and an airport express and an ATV2 to srteam video?

Open the AirPort tool under program/tools (I have the swedish version so I'm not sure of all names or text translations here)
1. Choose ur AirPort to be changed.
2. Down middle in the dialog: Manual Settings button.
3. Select Internet from the toolbar.
4. Sharingconnection (Have no idea in english) usually off, set it to Assign a range of IP-adresses
5. Choose DHCP above and set a range suitable for you.
6. Press Uppdate and wait for the AirPort to restart.
I don't realy understand your 2:nd question ???

It runs through itunes on your computer. You use the remote app to control through itunes. Itunes needs to be running. Works great, I use it all the time.

How to stream from iPad to apple tv via airport express with the airport express being connected to the internet

I have an apple tv, iPad 3 and airport express. Im at school and the apple tv is technically not supported by the network. Ive read that one could use AirPlay to apple tv via AE.
Can someone help me make this work? Step by step process if possible.

The router does provide WIFI, but the thing is the Apple TV will be out of reach. I want to avoid having two routers / networks. That's why Apple TV is hardwired. The AirPort (also hardwired) should only work as a receiver for the iPhone - streaming iPhone content to the Apple TV.
BOTH the Apple TV and the AirPort Express are AirPlay "speakers." That is, you can stream from iTunes to either device. You don't need both if the Apple TV is hardwired to an existing router. That provided the necessary networking for AirPlay to stream over. Wi-Fi is NOT required for AirPlay if you have a wired connection between the AirPlay "server" (i.e., iTunes host) and the AirPlay "speaker."
The Apple TV would work as a "receiver" for your iPhone.
If AirPlay is an application layer software, how may two AirPlay device communicate directly? Normally all communication is relayed by the access point.
AirPlay is a streaming protocol that runs over TCP/IP. AirPlay "speakers" DO NOT communicate with each other directly. The basic communication path is between an AirPlay "server" and an AirPlay "speaker" or multiple "speakers." Again the path between them can be either be wired or wireless or some combination of each.

Airport express with BT router to help an idiot

now, im a new mac user and an idiot when it comes to computers in general so please bear with me.
I have an Imac which wirelessley connects to my BT Voyager 2091 router using a WEP key, putting aside the fact that i have to input the key everytime the mac is turned on i need help with my new aiport express.
All i would like to do is plug the AX in behind the stereo and connect it via cable to play airtunes into the lounge - thats it - easy - NOT
i have plugged the ax in, the mac can see it, but i try adding it to the existing network and even put in the password for the router and then it just flashes amber.....
please can someone explain in simple idiot proof language what i should do be doing?

hello there
i have had my apple g4 book getting internet access
through the airport express and a bt voyager 210
router and hit has been fine for about a year. now,
for a few weeks, when i turn it on and click on
safari, i get error messages about the airport being
okay but it cannot connect to the internet. to get
round this i set up a new network, and hey presto! it
works again. this takes me about 10 minutes each
time it happens. is it because there is something
wrong with the bt router? Also, is it best to unplug
the airport express and router whem not in use, to
save electricity? I am in the uk if that helps.

just another thing id forgotten.. I unplug the router and airport express out and leave a couple of minutes. then i plug it back in and after a couple of minutes im connected again. i think it must be the bt router that's getting worn out. do these things wear out?

Airport Express with wired router

Question: I have a PC without wireless capabilities, a mac book pro, and a new AX. In order to get everything online I'm trying to connect my cable modem to a broadband router (Linksys RT41P2). This then connects to my PC and my Airport Express. Problem is I cannot seem to get the wireless internet to work.
The AX is set to work as a bridge (I picked that much up from some other posts), connect using ethernet, configure using DHCP.
An IP Address, and a subnet mask automatically appear but I can't get internet to work. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you have the configuration correct.
You didn't mention this in your post so I assume that you do have the Express set to Create a Wireless Network, correct? Set up a network name, security, etc?
Also remember that cable modems almost always need to be reset after any change to the network is made. If you haven't already done so, power it down and let it rest for 30 minutes or so. If it has a battery, pull it.
Power down the rest of the system as well. Then restart the modem first, let it run for 5-10 minutes, then power up the Linksys, then the Express (wait for the green light), and finally your computers. See if that helps and please post back on your progress.

Can I use Airport Express with Comcast router and Apple TV?

I want to connect my iPod Touch (version 8.1.2) to a home stereo wirelessly. I am considering getting an AE Base Station. I have a Mac mini running OSX 10.9.5 connected wirelessly using a Comcast router. I also have an Apple TV, which I have not yet connected to my TV. Here are some questions.
Are there any problems with doing this. In particular, can I continue to use the Comcast router?
Also, I have seen some comments saying that the cable modem slowed down when AE was added. Is that true? Thanks,

The stereo doesn't have wireless (or bluetooth).
My understanding is that the iPod Touch has a built-in airplay transmitter.
If so, connecting the AE Base Station to my stereo would allow sending music from my iPod to my stereo.
Is that correct? Thanks.

Airport Express with Fios router connection issues

I have an Airport Extreme I am using with a Fios router (with the Fios wireless deactivated).
Prior to Fios, I used it with Comcast and never had the following issues:
When accessing the web from any of my Macs after a period of sleep or other disuse, the browsers return a "not connected to the internet" message (this is after the machine has returned to service for a time-- not immediately after waking).
Waiting a few more seconds and then trying again usually connects normally. Again, never did that with Comcast-- on and connected was on and connected.
AppleTV is almost NEVER connected when I go to watch it after a period of disuse. Usually, all maner of resets/restarts are required to get everything talking. I have both an older white ATV as well as the newest black model.
I should add that the Verizon tech knew next to nothing about Apple products when he came out. I ended up going on-line and reading all kinds of posts and arriving at my current configuration. Networking has always been a black hole in my Mac knowledge, so, rather than put all the blame on Verizon, I will say it's highly likely my set-up is not optimal.
Does anyone know how best to set-up this combination? I don't really even know how to tell you how I set mine up to begin with!

Unfortunately, if you have Fios, you really are forced into using their equipment and will have to configure the AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode to work correctly with the Fios gateway.
Check to verify if the AirPort Extreme is set to operate in Bridge Mode, which would be the correct configuration for your setup.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click the AirPort Extreme and then click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon at the top of the window
The setting for Connection Sharing should be "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Is that the case?

Cannot print wirelessly via AirPort Express with WPA2 Personal security

Recently decided to tighten security by switching to WPA2 Personal from WEP on our WDS wired/wireless home network. Main base station is Airport Extreme, WDS remote base station is an Airport Exress, both configured using Airport Setup Assistant. Printers are hardwired through the switch. No problem printing wirelessly when in range of the main base station, but when connected through the WDS remote base station, get the following error: "Unable to open [printername]: No route to host". Interestingly, if I first print when connected (wirelessly) through the main base station, I can then print wirelessly through the remote base station. When I go back to WEP security there is no problem. Anyone have any suggestions?

Using Airport Express with an ATT DSL router

Hi All! The following thoughts are for
     1) those of you who use ATT DSL as your internet service-provider, and
     2) who wish to stream iTunes songs from your computer to speakers in other rooms via AIRPORT EXPRESSes, and
     3) are wondering whether you have to purchase a separate Apple Airport Extreme base-station, or can simply use your exisiting ATT router.
Having just spent several days and many hours on the phone before Apple's tech "Dan" was finally able to get my system up and running, I thought some of you might appreciate my sharing the following info while it's still fresh in my mind.
1. You may need to update your ATT router to the latest version, in order for it to properly communicate with your AIRPORT EXPRESS(es) (henceforth shortened to "AEs"). The AEs use 802.11n speed. My original ATT router (a 2Wire 2701HG-B) was no faster than "-h," and this might have been part of the problem as to why my system wouldn't work. I went to my local AT&T store, and got their latest router: as of this writing, a Netgear "Westell" Model B90-755025-15, which can run at both the slower speeds as well as the faster "-n." To find out some of the specs of my router, an Apple tech had me type in the 10 digits of my Gateway IP Address into the address-bar (no need for the "https://www") and "Presto!", up popped several pages of info on my router.
2. When first setting up your AE, it needs to be back in "default mode." If it's right out of the box, you don't need to do anything. But if, like me, you've already made several attempts to get it running, then you need to reset it to its pre-configured state, You do that by taking a bent paper-clip, and inserting one end into the little hole on the ports-side of your AE (near where the mini-plug of a speaker-cable is inserted). While the device is plugged in, gently press the paper-clip into the hole until the light on top blinks amber QUICKLY, the flashes coming in rapid succession. Then remove the paper-clip, and the AE will glow solid amber--meaning it's waiting to be re-programmed.
3. When first setting up your AE, do NOT attach an ETHERNET CABLE from the router. The only cable that needs to be attached is the mini-plug cable running to some sort of portable, powered speaker. For myself, to make things easier, I brought my AE and my new Sony RDP-M5iP speaker/dock into the same room as my Imac & router. That way, I'd know immediately if the AE was working correctly.
4. After you've clicked on your Airport Utility App (hard drive TO Applications TO Utilities folder), you'll soon come to a page that asks you to name your AE (this page calls it a "base station"). Before you do that, you should see a button in the lower left-hand corner that says, "Other Options." Click on it. You'll then be given a choice of "Creating a New Network" or "Choosing an Existing Network." You want this 2nd choice--because you indeed are planning to use your ATT router's exisitng wireless network.
5. Shortly, you'll come to the page asking you to name your AE. Call it, for instance, "Family Room Speaker." As for password, at first I--as well as virtually all of the techs with whom I spoke--thought I should type in the multi-digit ATT router-password (called a "Wireless Network Key"). But finally, "Dan" told me to simply type in, "express1" (or, for my 2nd AE, "express2"). That did the trick!
6. Your AE should now be glowing green on top. Plus, on the 10x6" dark-grey rectangular box displaying the globe (i.e., your main internet connection), the globe should have a now-green glowing circle to its left. And underneath, it should be displaying a rectangle named "Family Room Speaker" (or whatever name you've given your Airport Express).
7. When you now open iTunes, you should see a little blue rectangle (with a triangle in its middle) in the lower right-hand corner of your iTunes box. Click on it, and it should show listed both your computer-speaker as well as your AE speaker(s), plus a heading called "multiple speakers." Click on "multiple," and it will bring up a box displaying all your now-current speakers. Check the small square next to any speakers that are unchecked, and a volume-slider will appear. Bring them all up to a comfortable level. Then click on an iTunes track you'd like to play and, viola!, you should hear music playing both from your computer and from the portable speaker to which your AE is attached.
8. Now close iTunes. Then unplug your Airport Express and--if you have a 2nd AE-- plug them both back into your power-strip. Go thru the set-up steps in your Airport Utility App for this 2nd AE. At the end of it, both AEs should be glowing green on top, and both should be displayed on your computer-screen.
Now re-open iTunes, and start a song playing. (Don't forget to click on the blue rectangle at the R-hand bottom, and activate the new AE speaker.) By inserting your speaker cable alternately into each of the AEs, you should be able to verify that, yes, both are now working.
9. Unplug both AEs, and bring them to whatever room you want to use them in. Plug them in to a wall outlet, and run your mini-cable from the AE to the speaker. Give the AEs a few minutes to pick up the signal once again from your ATT router; when they do, their lights will change from amber back to green. Tech Dan warned me to keep them away from too much metal, to avoid interference. As soon as they turn green, you should now be hearing your iTunes track playing thruout your house! (If not, you may have to first close iTunes on your computer, then re-open it, and start a new track playing.)
The BOTTOM LINE: no, you don't have to purchase a separate Apple Extreme to be your base-station. Your ATT router--if it's running at the 802.11n standard--should be able to work with your Airport Express(es)!

I am GREATLY appreciative of this overview. Even though I don't understand a lot of it. I will keep working through. I am-- have for 2 years-- had terrible connectivity with AT&T's service & 2Wire router. My MacBookPro keeps dropping the signal. I'm talking every few clicks at times. Husband's PC drops it, too, but not nearly as much as the Mac. I'm sure what you posted can help us get better connectivity.

The first message that AirPort Utility will display during the auto setup will be that the Express will be confgured to "extend" the network. When AirPort Utility analyzes the network further, and sees that the Express cannot "extend" the 3rd party network, the next message will indicate that the Express is being configured to "join" the wireless network.
Once the Express is configured, if you later go into AirPort Utility to check the settings under the Wireless tab, you will see that the Wireless Mode is indeed "Join a wireless network".

Airport Express with D-Link router?

I bought an Airport Express with the specific purpose of connecting an old 1999 iMac to the internet (D-Link wireless router) via the ethernet port. I also thought I could use it to connect other ethernet devices such as my HD-DVD player.
I tried to configure the Express with my PowerBook to discover later in the instructions that the ethernet port is disabled when configuring the unit as wireless bridge/client. It sounds odd, becuase I can't understand the use of it, then. The range extender configuration which enables ethernet, apparently only works with an Airport base station. I admit I'm not very networking-savvy. Did I do something wrong? Am I understanding the instructions correctly?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your D-Link router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).

Airport express with hard-wired medem router?

hi there. i've got a hard-wired modem router to my mac and a pc. my mac however has got an airport card in it and i'm thinking of buying a usb wifi dongle thing (?) for the pc and use an airport express station to get wireless internet.
Can anyone please assure me that this set up would work:
lounge: iMac with aiport card.
bedroom upstairs: pc with usb wifi thing
living room: phone line plugged in modem router, modem router ethernet cabled to airport express plugged in socket on the wall. hi-fi plugged in airport express with stereo jack.
would i get wireless internet on both machines an my tunes wirellesly available on the hi-fi?

With the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), configured as a "bridge and connected via Ethernet to your wired router, it will act like a Wireless Access Point (WAP). In this configuration, the wired router will continue to provide NAT & DHCP services for both the wired and wireless clients connected to it.
Your proposed network configuration is sound. The only issue I see may be the wireless range. The AX is advertised at 300' for 802.11b (11 Mbps), but building construction materials or other forms of Wi-Fi Interference may limit this range. The end result is that the wireless clients furthest away from the AX may experience weak or poor wireless performance.
