AirPlay vs AirParrot

I tried this before, but got no reactions, but does anyone notice that streaming movies from a 3ghz 13inch retina mbp is not as smooth as it should be? Is this a software issue or is it the built in graphics card that can't handle the streaming?
If I use AirParrot it works pretty well, I don't know what the difference is when it comes to software and quality, but I am a bit surpriesed that a brand new MBP can't handle a smooth AirPlay stream.
Does anyone have noticed this?
Thank you
Alexander

Yessss!!! I hate it when it lags and it gets annoying especially when it becomes unresponsive and I have to disconnect/reconnect airplay. I upgraded to the rMBP specifically to use airplay ... on my mid-2010 MBP I tried the free version of Airparrot but there was always a delay of 1-2 seconds, is the full version better and smoother?!

  • Enabling Airplay on older Macs with Airparrot: Worth $9,99 or not?

There has been many questions about why newly updated Macs don't support Airplay mirroring, including from myself. The answer is found here: http://www.cultofmac.com/178460/the-real-reason-why-macs-before-2011-cant-use-ai rplay-mirroring-in-mountain-lion-feature/
There is however another solution found in Airparrot. I've tried it, and it works. It does however have some issues. It does not seem to support fullscreen, nor am I able to use the TV as a second screen. It struggled when I tried to play a movie as a mirror, and it became unwatchable at best.
Anyone else had any experience with it?

Maybe it has improved since I tested it, that was back in the days when they admitted there was no audio. However by the sounds of things, whilst they now have audio it does seem to be rather poor judging only by others reports.
As you know, I consider myself to have a fairly robust network, but was very unimpressed with the delivery of video over this service. If it was some sort of satellite link to my long lost brother deep in the bush in Australia, I may well endure it, however this is supposed to be entertainment and for those purposes it just isn't good enough. I'm probably exaggerating a little bit when I compare it to watching a movie back in the days of dial up, but it really wasn't all that much better overall.

  • Airplay/Airparrot on Late 2008 Macbook pro with Yosemite

    Hi all,
I am going to update my Late 2008 MacBook with Yosemite and for that purpose I am going to upgrade my laptop memory to 8GB.
Nevertheless, I read that it is not sufficient to upgrade the OS in order to use Airplay with the Apple TV (that I am going to buy as well), but a newer hardware is required. On the other hand, there is Airparrot which seems to work with older hardware, but at the Apple store they told me that it that you lose quality and that it is not comparable with Airplay, which is much more better. So, I get a bit doubtful about Airparrot... Any suggestion/experience on that?
    Many thanks,
    /Ubaldo

Airparrot is 3rd party program, that attempts to mimic AirPlay mirroring via software solution. Results will vary, there is a trial that can be used before purchasing. The newer hardware is required for native mirroring as it uses the newer processor to do video encoding.

To check your model go to About This Mac (by clicking on the Apple icon, top left) and then select more info. If you wish to use mirroring you will need one from 2011 or later running OSX 10.8 or later. The alternative would be to use 3rd party software like Airparrot.

  • Airplay mirroring on early 2011 macbook pro not mirroring

    First, here's what I have:
Early 2011 macbook pro (identifier 8,3) with 2.2 Intel Core i7 processor connected over Wifi on 2.4 Ghz channel.
    OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion
Apple TV 3 (fully up to date)
The stats I've read say airplay mirroring should work fine.  I can connect both machines just fine. I can stream movies just fine. I can send music just fine.  I just cannot mirror my desktop.  I have the icons, a connection is made, but all that shows is a blank screen. I've adjusted the resolutions with no luck.  I've shut down and rebooted both machines with no luck...
Any solutions or do I have to count my losses with Apple Airplay and spend more money on a 3rd party alternative (AirParrot)?

    Hi eoinodonnell,
The problem was resolved, but I have the worst answer... it just started working, and has remained reliable since.  I never found out exactly what fixed it, but I would try these things:
    1) Try a factory reset on the Apple TV, and make sure your Macbook pro has all the latest updates.
    2) Try to repair disk permissions (better to do it from disk utility from boot menu) and reboot your macbook.
    3) Backup your files and do a fresh install of OSX.
I know I performed all these tasks, and possibly more, but something along the way did fix the problem.
I hope something here works!  If so, please let me know what did it.

  • Airplay mirror imaging icon will not show up on my macbook pro even though i downloaded mountain lion. How do i get airplay icon to appear on my macbook pro?

i have a macbook pro (almost positive that its a 2010 version) and i got mountain lion. The BIGGEST AND MAIN REASON i bought mountain lion was so that i can do airplay, allowing me to mirror image what is on my mac to my Apple TV. my whole computer is updated as far as the displays and newer features but the small airplay icon will not show up on the top of my screen. therefore, not allowing me to mirror image what is on my mac to my tv... it is connected to the same wifi as my apple tv. idk what to do. could it be because my macbook pro is a 2010? desprately looking for help...please help me with this issue
    thank you

Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404 AirPlay Mirroring requires an Early 2011 or newer MacBook Pro, so your MacBook Pro isn't supported.
To mirror your MacBook Pro's display onto the Apple TV, you can use an application like Beamer or AirParrot even if AirPlay Mirroring isn't compatible

  • Forced to use Airplay with Apple tv

I just bought a new Retina MBP 15 inch, and since I got it with the educational discount promotion, I also got an Apple Store gift card. And with which I redeemed an Apple tv. At first having an Apple tv is an invaluable addition to making my whole house much more connected. But now it's simply more and more frustrating.
Basically I was trying to watch a video on YouTube last night on my Retina MBP using a pair of headphone, and for some reason no audio came through and the sound controls became incredibly unresponsive. I later figured it out that it's because my computer had selected Airplay as the audio output device. However for some reason, I can't seem to change that. I've just been trying to use the built in speakers on the Retina MBP to try to play some music from iTunes, however, when ever the system tries to play any sort of music, or any sound in that matter, the output device will just get switched to Airplay, which is the Apple tv, and I can't get my computer to play any sound through the built in speaker.
This is solved only when either I turned off wifi on my Retina MBP, which cuts off the connection to the Apple tv, or I unplug the power cable on the Apple tv all together to prevent it from waking up and connecting with my MPB.
This is extremely frustration if anyone has a viable solution to this problem it would be a LIFE SAVER. So THANK YOU in advance! (you can see the level of frustration here with the capital letter)

You need a newer 2011 or later iMac to use Airplay.
    Sorry.
For older Mac, look at an app called AirParrot

  • How can I use AirPlay Mirroring or equivalent with MacBook Pro 5,5?

    Hi!
I have a MacBook Pro 5,5 (mid-2009 13"), which I recently treated with a RAM bump, an SSD drive and a shiny new battery.
I'd like to buy an Apple TV in order to use AirPlay Mirroring. I understand that only the MacBook Pro laptops that have been released in 2011 or later are compatible with the feature, but I know that some third party apps (like AirParrot) offer a decent workaround. Unfortunately, it seems that the MacBook Pro 5,5 (i.e. my laptop!) isn't compatible with AirParrot.
Does anyone have a solution for me?
    Thanks!!

  • How to use airplay speakers in multi-output device without crackling audio?

    Hi,
I would like to mirror the audio output from my mac mini to the built-in output and an airplay speaker.
Therefore I added a Multi-Output Device containing  the Built-in- and Airplay output, as soon as I activate the airplay speaker the sound is mirrored but unfortunately always with a crackling sound coming of the speakers set as "slave Device"... only the Device set as "Master Device" has clear sound, doesn't matter if it's the airplay speaker or the speaker (or headphone) directly connected to the built-in output.
I've tested this with a mac mini and an mac book air as audio source, same problem. Both were running Mac OS V. 10.9.2.
Does anyone have an idea what I'm doing wrong?

    Chris

I'm using a 2011 Macbook Pro running Mavericks and current Apple TV (MD199HK/A 3rd generation) when trying to output audio to both Apple TV and built-in output simultaneously I suffer crackling and popping. I have this issue once I use Audio MIDI Setup (under utilities) to create a Multi-Output Devise. Once I use this multi-output devise made up of Apple TV and Built-In Output to get my music to both output devises at once BUT I get crackling sound on either Spotify or iTunes.
I've worked around this issue by using AirParrot. I select Apple TV in AirParrot with Audio enabled. The Apple TV then takes all audio output, then I select the 'Multi-Output Devise created in 'Audio MIDI Setup' and I have playback through Apple TV and Built-In Output without any crackling or popping.
Only minor outstanding issue is that whatever scenario I then run Audio Midi Setup in terms of setting various devises as Master Clock and resampling of sub devise I can't perfect the sync between Apple TV audio output and my local Macbook Pro, but close enough with the slightest hint of echo. Plenty of forums discussing Word Clock sync which is out of my league. Un-ticking drift correction on the 'AirParrot' audio output has them close enough, depends on how easily you can hear your apple TV output from the room where your Macbook Pro is and vice versa.

  • HT201343 is there a way of getting Airplay working on a iMac lat 2009

I'm suppose to get the "airplay icon" in the menu bar...but i don't.  Is there a way to access this?  Apple said I wuld need to upgrade to Mountain Lion which I've done.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
AirPlay Mirroring requires a Mid 2011 or newer iMac, so your iMac isn't supported. You can use a third-party application to stream your computer onto the Apple TV, as AirParrot > http://www.airparrot.com

  • I have a macbook pro with IOS 10.6.8 and my itunes is version 11.0.1, can I airplay to an apple TV?

please help, I have a macbook pro with a IOS 10.6.8 operating system, I just opperated my ituned to version 11.0.1. Can I airplay my macbook to an apple tv?

On Snow Leopard, you can't use AirPlay Mirroring, but if you upgrade to Mountain Lion, you will be able to use AirPlay MIrroring > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
If you want to upgrade to Mountain Lion, first make a backup of your files. Then, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion, and follow the steps to upgrade to Mountain Lion. Check if your applications are supported > http://www.roaringapps.com
If you don't want to upgrade Mac OS X, you can also install AirParrot > http://www.roaringapps.com
If you are referring to AirPlay on iTunes, you can do it. The AirPlay icon will appear on the iTunes toolbar when your computer detects the Apple TV

Mac Pros don't support Airplay.  Only some post 2011 Macs do, MAc Pros aren't amongst them.

You could try Airparrot software as a workaround.

  • A Suggestion for the solution of AirPlay problem in old Mac's

    Hi,
Today I bought an Apple TV 3 from Geneva Apple Store. Eventhough I told the responsible sellsman that I have a late 2010 iMac 27' with i7 Quad Core, he told me that I can use AirPlay. After coming home I realized that wasn't the reality. Fine, I am not going to complain... After some hours of search in google, finding out the reason of the problem and reading the reviews of AirParrot (which is bad for high quality video streaming), I didn't find any discussion about my idea:
Why isn't Apple or any third party developer coming up with a software solution to connect an iOS device containing H.264 chipset to the Mac with the USB cable and use the connected devices chipset to encode the video/audio and steam it wirelessly. Is there a thecnical barrier for this?
Well there may be a delay in the stream (because the processing chip will be not on the main board of the computer but on a USB connected device), but who cares if the movie is coming to the TV screen a few seconds later than the computer screen?
Could somebody please reply to this? I want to know why even it is impossible.
PS: Sorry for my english. I am not a native speaker.
    Best,
    Olgun Elicin
