Airplay with older iMac

I just bought an Apple TV, it works fine with iTunes but I cannot stream from Quicktime or other video software.
That means a waste of time converting video files to mp4.
I know that it's because I have a rather old iMac (mid 2010 mod. 11,3), still I wonder if there's a way to make it work with AirPlay, a patch or something?
Thank you
Giovanni

There is no 'official' patch so to speak.
There is a commercial offering called AirParrot which will attempt to Airplay in software (the newer Macs rely on hardware features to optimise Airplay which is why it's not available on yours - or any of mine for that matter including an 8 core Mac Pro!).
Try the AirParrot demo - there are mixed reviews.
In all honesty if I were you I'd stick with the time consuming video conversion - Airplay mirroring  works like screen sharing using a highly compressed stream of the video display - it is likely that unless you have perfect networking conditions that a converted video will offer better quality than Airplay mirroring.  Try Handbrake or MPEGstreamclip for video conversion.

How to share contacts from ipad2 with older iMac running 10.6.2?

Well I guess I was too optimistic. Since last posting I have had three hang events, one during reboot. When the login dialog box came up I clicked on it and it hung.
However I do have a new data point. I have enabled the remote login (sshd). I have discovered that when the system hangs like I described above, I can still log in via SSH from my Windows system. The shell appears normal, but when I tried a "killall Safari" command the OS crashed hard. After a hard reset, the system hung during the login process. Again I could login remotely, and that time I executed a "sudo reboot" via the remote session. That cleared the display to all-blue but did not successfully reboot.
Can anyone suggest what to try via the remote login to help diagnose what is happening? I am familiar with typical Linux architecture but the differences in Mac OS X are leaving me a bit disoriented.

  • Airplay for Older iMacs

    I hace iMac 2009, running 10.8.4
I understand that with newer iMacs you can now mirror your desktop to Apple TV.  Is there a way, an add on, an app, something, that will enable older iMas like mine to enable it to be mirrored to my Apple TV (Black box)?
    Thanks,
    Jassy

AirPlay Mirroring isn't supported in your iMac > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
However, you can use a third-party app to mirror the Mac onto the Apple TV. You can use different applications like AirParrot or Beamer that work as AirPlay Mirroring with supported Macs

  • Using latest Airport Extreme with older iMac and 10.4.11

Airport Extreme Utility does not recognize the base station, unable to complete set up, please advise.
Not looking for the older iMac to have a wireless connection--have Ethernet cable running from Airport Extreme to iMac.
(Another Ethernet cable runs from Cable Modem to Airport Extreme.)
Looking to have a wireless network for WiFi enabled devices.

Not the first time I've seen this type of scary issue with Tiger.  The OS is so old, looks like we are going to have issues setting up the extreme.  We could find a work around... by using either an iOS device, or even a PC.  What else do you have there that's handy?

  • IPhone 4 won't share with older iMac

I have an iPhone 4, an iPad 3, an older iMac 20" and a new MacBook Pro.  I can get everything to share with everything else, i.e. iPad will share with both macs and iPhone will share with newer MacBook.  However, I can't enable sharing between the iPhone 4 and the older iMac.  Any ideas?

I think you need to update your version of iTunes as well as your OS, your iPhone needs a later version of iTunes to connect to, and that version will not work on Tiger.

  • Hi, I have a Beolit12, which stutters using airplay with my Imac

    Hi Everyone
I hope some can please help
I have a Bang & Olufsen Beolit 12, which plays perfectly using Airplay from Ipad and Iphone 5, but stutters every 30 seconds or so from my Imac
    Any ideas please!!!!!!

If you are still getting stuttering when the iMac, Beolit, and the wireless router are in the same room I'm not sure what the issue is. Unfortunately, I don't have a Beolit to test with.
The only other option I can think of is if you can borrow an AirPort Express. Use the Express with a pair of stereo headphones connected to its audio port. Stage the iMac, Express, and wireless router in the same room and find out whether or not you still get the stutters in the headphones when streaming from the iMac. If you do, it may be some configuration on the iMac that is the problem.

  • IPod no longer works with Older iMac (works with new iMac)

    Hi all:
First off sorry about the cross post but I got no response to this question in the other forum. Hoping for help from this group. Thanks!!!!
I have an iMac Duo (20" 2.0Ghz) running 10.4.8 and iTunes 7.0.1 which recognizes my 5g (and my wife's 4g) no problem. However when I attach either of them to my G3 (G3 500 MHz) running 10.2.8 (iTunes 6.0.5) they are not recognized.
I believe that the 5G won't work because the G3 does not have USB 2. However, I do not understand why the 4G does not work.
The 4G worked with the G3 for about 2 years. I have not tried to attach it to the G3 since we bought new computers (iMac for me, MacBook Pro for her) until today. I wanted to use it to transfer some files from the G3 to the new iMac.
I have tried forcing the 4G into disk mode and connecting it to the G3 but that did not help (I tried this with the 5G also).
I am using a USB cable with the 5G and a firewire cable with the 4G.
According to software update all of the computers are 100% current.
Thanks for any and all help!
    Gary

I'm no geek but I can say that my 5G video iPod works just fine with my B&W G3 (450Mhz processor), which I am pretty sure only has USB 1. My G3 is running iTunes 7 and OS 10.4.5. Updating may solve your problem.

  • With older imacs, is there a point when you SHOULDN'T upgrade to latest OS?

I may have worded that poorly but basically what I'm after is this: I know Apple lists the compatible Macs going back X number of years with each OS update, but is there a point where one is better off staying put with say Mountain Lion on iMac 21.5 Late 2009 (12GB RAM) vs. updating to Mavericks and eventually Yosemite.  Obviously, the newer the machine the better apt it is to take advantage of the newer OS, however will taking on latest OS actually slow down an old Mac?  Is this making any sense?

I disagree. My 2009 MacBook ran Mavericks very well. Better, gasp, than Snow Leopard.
Mavericks is designed to be more efficient than previous OSes and should run well on the hardware that Apple says will support it.
If you're alrady running Mavericks, I wouldn't downgrade. As you guess, you'll have problems with existing apps you've installed that may not work with 10.6. Not to mention the lack of security updates. You'll be exposing yourself to all sorts of known vulnerabilities by downgrading.
Stay are you are. You might not see the value in upgrading to Yosemite, but I wouldn't backtrack now.

  • Setting up Airplay with my iMac so that I can see my desktop on the Apple TV

I have setup Airplay so that I can play music or videos from my iMac but how do I setup Airplay so I can see my desktop on the Apple TV? Initially, when I setup my iPad, the desktop on the iPad appeared on the TV; however, I cannot get it to do that again. How was it done in the first place and how do I get to see my desktop of my iPad and iMac on the Apple TV?

To mirror your desktop to your TV using Apple TV you need one of these Macs: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). All other Macs don't support this feature.
For your iPad: Double click the Home button, scroll to the left and tip the Airplay icon.

I have an olde iMac that once I have an older iMAC that once burned CD's with no issues. Now I get an error message saying "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device is not accessible, probably because it was removed". I have never had it touched so the device was not removed. Please advise as to what could be the problem. How to fix. Thanks

Try resetting the SMC and PRAM first, if that doesn't help try a cleaning disc.....and then buy an inexpensive external burner. Slimline super drive failures are all too common.
    To reset the SMC
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

Are you wanting to import iCal to the MacBook Air. Since iCloud doesn't work with 10.6 OSX you probably don't have any data in iCloud yet?

A reply to similar question (Q & As , in product page Apple Store) says:
"...dissable the internal reader hardware from devices setup. Then plug the external usb superdrive and that's it."  Answered by Enrique T from Lima Oct  25 2013.
If you can locate an external Apple USB 'Air" superdrive for earlier model MacBook Air, that should work. The newer one for the Air is the same as for iMac, now.
You may be able to use other brands of external USB optical drive with your older intel-based iMac, as some of them function capably. A few should also be able to see system discs or other bootable utilities on DVD.
    Hopefully this helps.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • HT4854 I bought a new mac including 10.8 ML. How can I install 10.8 on my older iMac (mid-2011) with 10.6?

I bought a new mac including 10.8 Mountain Lion. (How) can I now install 10.8 on my older iMac (mid-2011) which came with 10.6?

You will need to buy it at the app store. The license for the pre-installed OS on your new machine is only for that machine. Only OS's purchased from the app store can be installed on more than one machine (as long as you own it).
