AirPlaying avi movies to Apple TV

Let's try this one:
1. AVI movie file that plays in QuickTime - saved as reference movie file using QT 7 Pro
2. Reference file added to the iTunes library plays the avi movie in iTunes from it's original location without any problems
Can I AirPlay it to Apple TV?
If yes then I'm ready to buy Apple TV, if not then I'll go for WD player.
Anyone knows the answer?

  • How to watch .avi movies on apple tv 2 gen

    Hi there.
Just bought an Apple tv gen2 day before yesterday. Here are my question(s)
    1. I am trying to stream .avi format thru my itunes. I was able to stream .mp4( i think) on the apple tv.  How can i stream avi format?
    2. I also have an Ipad 1gen. Everybody keeps talking about mirroring it so that whatever I do on Ipad I can see it on my TV. How do i do that. Sounds really cool.
    Thank you

The way I do it is to use a program/app called Air Video: http://www.inmethod.com/air-video/index.html
The program will stream .avi files to the app on the iPhone or iPad and then from there you can AirPlay the movie to the AppleTV. The app costs A$2.99 and the server is free. You need iOS 5 for it work. You can still use your Phone for other things though I haven't tried a phone call.
You can't mirror the iPad 1st gen display but you can use the component cable to plug the iPad directly to the tv and play the movie from Air Video through that rather than AirPlay

  • No sound when using Airplay for Movies on Apple TV

For reasons unknow, when I try to stream full length movies (Lion King and Nemo bought from iTunes) from my iPhone or Macbook Pro using Airplay, there is no sound.  When I stream smaller movies, like Boundin' the Pixar Short, there is no problem.
Side note 1: Why do purchased movies not show up like purchased TV shows on Apple TV?  I feel like I shouldn't have to use Airplay for movies if I don't need to use it for TV shows I buy.
Side note 2: For some Netflix movies played directly from Apple TV there is no sound.  Other movies work fine and the movies that work or don't work seem to change day to day.
    Thanks for your help.

Apple has not negotiated the rights to allow this is the assumed reason.
We can't even play Purchased music or TV Shows from the cloud in UK.

  • Airplay rented movies to apple tv

I have a macbook pro 13 inch (non-retina).  I have a apple tv third generation that is connected to panasonic 65 inch plasma tv - TC-P65ST60 via HDMI.  Through itunes, I rented a HD movie.  I tried to stream the movie to my TV thorugh airplay on my apple tv.  However, it says that my set up was not HDCP compliant.  I have also tried streaming other HD movies via airplay, and a gray screen appears.
One of the reasons I wish to do it this way, is to have the movie already downloaded on my comptuter.  when I try streaming the move from itunes, there has been a significant amount of lag.

Also, if you intend to stream a rented film you need to do so via home sharing. Make sure it is enabled in iTunes and Apple TV. You then access your iTunes library by going to the Computers icon on Apple TV.

Can I airplay a movie from safari on my MacBook to Apple TV and still use the computer for something else at the same time?

    Hi frogjt,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
Great question! You can absolutely do this in OS X 10.9. The attached article explains how the process of using AirPlay with Apple TV to create a second display. Also, towards the bottom of the article there are instructions on how to set your Displays preferences on the computer to make sure the TV and MacBook Pro displays are set up the way you want them to be.

  • Playing AVI movie files??

Help. I have 3 Macs: G4 Flat Panel, Imac G5- which play AVI movie files just fine. Mac Mini (specs below) which does not. Been at it for hours. The two older ones are non-intel, the mini is intel, this is the only difference I can see. I have the same software and plug-ins installed; (quicktime pro, flip for mac, windows media player, divx plug-in, xvid) All of them are running 10.4.11. When I put in a movie encoded in AVI in the mini I get a prompt that says roughly 'additional software plugin might be needed', can't think of anything else to do. Any info appreciated. Thank you.

If anyone else has this problem with an intel based mac here is link that solved my problem.

  • .AVI conversion to Apple TV issue

Hi folks. There are different replies on the message board - somewhat confusing to go thru them all and not all of them seem to be exactly like mine. I have a bunch of .avi movies I'd like to convert and put in iTunes for my Apple TV. Most of the movies have the following stats:
    .avi/mpeg4/yuv420p/664x268
    ac3/48000hz/stereo/192kbs
I have been trying to use QT pro to ocnvert (I have Perian installed as well). The movies seem to play fine in QT Pro with both audio and video in sync. HOWEVER - when I try to play it back on my TV through Apple TV within the first 30 or so minutes the audio and video are out of sync (audio usually comes out before the person moves their lips!) funny but tragic for me since I cant get it right. the movie quality and audio quality are good, just it is obviously unwatchable out of sync so badly.
If anyone can assist in letting me know how to set up QT Pro to convert my files correctly, or even to convert with FFMpeg, I would GREATLY appreciate it -I have been trying to figure this out myself for a while with no luck.
    Thanks in advance

Hi Jason, I've noticed the same problem with the .avi files. It happens when you export the file with QT Pro using the option "File > Export > Movie to Apple TV".
To solve it you can export the file using "File > Export > Movie to MPEG-4". I use the options:
    - File format: MP4
    - Video format: H.264
    - Data Rate: 1300 kbits/sec (it works well with the image size of most TV shows)
    - Image size: Current
Use the default options for the other parameters.
The exported file is a little bigger than the .avi file, but it plays with good quality in Apple TV.
I hope it works for you.
    Domingo.

  • Home Movies over Apple TV

    Greetings:
I have a significant amount of home movies on my windows computer in AVI format.  I want to save a copy of all AVI files.  I also have Quicktime Pro.
What is the most efficient (space saving with best resolution) way of playing the AVI movies on the Apple TV through home sharing on my windows computer.
Is it doing a save as or exporting from the AVI.  Can the AVI be streamed?  Thanks in advance...j

The Apple TV does not support AVI.
To have any certainty that you are converting your files correctly you should export them from QuickTime in an H264 format.

  • .avi movies that I could open in QT7pro on my G5 cannot open in QT7pro on my i5 iMac. What do I do?

.AVI movies that could be displayed and edited with QT pro 7 on my G5 now appear a black frames on my i5 imac. What can I do to see these movies?

VLC media player - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ - general media player that plays just about anything.

  • Error opening .avi movie file

When I try to open an .avi movie in quicktime I get a message that says:
"Error opening movie. The movie could not be opened." How can I open the movie? Or can I? Thanks...

    turtle007 & Mew Gull,
    To Apple Discussions!
Open the file with QuickTime Player.
Open the Movie Info window (Command-i).
Note the name of the video codec used in the file.
Do a Google.com search for codec name +Mac and download one appropriate for your OS and computer.
Quit and relaunch QuickTime after installing the new codec.
    Try the file again.
Thanks to QuickTimeKirk for the above info.
If the above does not work, then use VLC Media Player or Perian (AVI and FLV support)

  • .AVI movie player?

I have a Power PC Mac running 10.5.8. If I download an .avi movie file i get a message saying Quicktime requires additional software. Can someone point me at the right Quicktime plug-in, or some other Mac software which will allow me to watch .avi movies please?
    Thanks
    P.s. not quicktime Pro

    Hi,
AVI is only a container or "wrapper" the actual codec is inside the container. If you open the movie inspector it will tell you what the codec is under "format". You can then go to this link to see if the codec is supported.

  • After last uppgrade, Quicktime Pro will not play audio on my avi movies.

After last update, I will not get the audio on my old .avi movies. Does Anyone else have the same problem?

That actually did the trick. Well played. It would be nice if that were in *any* of the support documentation for AirPlay.
    Many thanks.

  • How can i transfer avi movie to iphone

How can I transfer the .Avi Movie to iphone?

AVI format can not be recognized by iTunes, so you need to convert the avi to an more mac friendly file like mp4, m4v for adding to your iPhone.
Click to check the solution: How to transfer .avi movie to mac iphone .mp4
Use Appgeeker to convert the file into one that can be played on your iphone. It has a lot of presets that you can use to convert it into the exact format that will play on your Apple products.

  • CineXplayer on the new iPad: why does my avi movie "trembles" while playing?

    Hi all,
I just purchased the CineXPlayer from the app store because I wanted to play a few AVI movies on my new iPad. I am really disappointed because the app couldn't handle the very first avi movie I threw to it.
The same AVI movie plays fine on my iMac using VLC. In cineXPlayer, the movie "trembles" but the sound is ok. Can anyone suggest where the problem might be?
I have removed cineXplayer and on the lookout for a free app for my iPad. Any suggestions?
    regards,
    Ali
