  • New Airport gigabit n constantly crashing!

    Hello,
My brand new Airport Gigabit Ethernet 11n router is CONSTANTLY (sometimes within 10min, sometimes it takes a few hours) crashing. It doesn't seem to have any real pattern to it either, sometimes when I get home and nothing was using the internet/network the network will just be down. Other times when we are doing more intense things, such as streaming movies from the upstairs computer to the TV it will go down. Xbox live will even kill it by itself... Also, the airdisk has been almost useless since i got it. It hasn't worked reliably on my 15in MBP (wireless g), however, on our PC (Gigabit hardwired) it works fine. The crashing has picked up as of late, but I don't think it was related to the 7.2.1 firmware update.
I have tried resetting it back to factory defaults, but it was a no go... And when it is in its "crashed" state, it does not show up in Airport utility and it does not respond to the reset button. Only unplugging and plugging it back in will get it to "work" for a while.
    Thanks for any help,
    Jim

    Hey yoink,
I'm on videotron too... north shore Montreal. Mine has crashed about 3 times today? did this start recently for you? my AEBS had been perfect till now. could it be a problem with videotron?
    Brige
    Hi there!
My Gigabit AEBS was purchased late Monday afternoon (Oct. 1st). It worked fine for a couple of hours (possible not fine but nothing happened in those hours) until I upgraded to 7.2.1 (from 7.2 which it ships with.)
Yesterday, after posting here, I called Apple and they told me to take it back for an exchange immediately. Which I did.
The new one does occasionally "disappear" (happened twice so far - once under heavy file transfer activity) but unlike the one that was returned this one comes back online within 30 seconds or so - the other one had to be unplugged to regain connectivity on both wired and wireless clients.
It's still possible that it's videotron though. I'm just not sure how to explore the possibility a little more.

  • Airport express causes router crash

My air port crashes my wifi network. I am trying to connect the airport wirelessly to my Mac solely for AirPlay. Also, my Mac does not "see" my airport express?  Help, please!,

When the AirPort Express is configured for AirPlay, it simply "joins" the existing wireless network....just like a computer or any other wireless device would join a wireless network.
It's hard to imagine how this would cause a network to crash...but I suppose anything is possible.
Here's what we do not know.....and need to know to provide some help.
    1) What version of the Express that you have?
Locate the model number on the side of bottom of the Express and post back with that info.  The mode number will start with an "A" followed by four numbers.
    2) What version of operating system your Mac is using?
Click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac to see the OS X Version number.  Post back with that info.
    3) What device is providing your wireless network now?
    Make?  Model Number?
    4) What type of wireless security setting that the current wireless router is using.?
The Express is expecting a setting of WPA/WPA2 Personal. If your wireless router does not use that type of setting, the Express will not connect.
With some basic information, we can begin to troubleshoot the problem.

  • What causes airport extreme base to crash every day?

this is the newer gigabit version.
i lose airdisk and am unable to access the base with airport utility.
it works for a while but it is guaranteed that it crash at some point during the day
whether i use it or not and whether the computer is on or not.
only way to get it going again is to unplug the power.
    thanks for any advice.

Have you updated the firmware to the latest version? The 7.2 versions were pretty bad about locking up. If so, have you tried a factory reset and reconfiguration?

  • Airport Extreme making PC crash + slow

I just got the Airport extreme 801.11n and I have a linksys wireless G.
I got the Airport extreme setup with my wifes PC notebook and my intel Macbook Pro.
When my wife uses google's Picasa photo program to send pictures over email, it works fine until she sends 6 or more then the laptop crashes. When I hook her up to the Linksys she can send as many as she wants (she just sent 15).
As some of the other posts indicate, it is noticeably slower.

Also, have you considered installing an Airport Monitoring widget that will tell you at what speed you are connected to your network at? http://www.apple.com/downloads/.../airtrafficcontrol.html
Unfortunately AirPortTrafficControl doesn't tell you the real speed. If you are connected to a 802.11g network it just generically states "54 Mbps".

  • Streaming to airport express causes majour crashes.

I finally got an express for the sitting room hifi.
My music is on a NAS drive and the I access it from an iBook.
iTunes loads fine and the music is there. If I play the music on the iBook its OK, with just an occasional dropout which rights it self.
On the Airport though its unusable, the tune loads fine and gets started, after about a minute, you get one drop out, then more and if you try and do anything on iTunes it crashes, force quit does not quit iTunes, it has taken the whole system down you cannot load activity monitor or anything.
It does this each and everytime, any ideas?
The wireless side is handled by a Draytek Vigor 2600, which seems to do the business on most things, even though itunes crashes, the NAS storage device is still accessible from the desktop no problems.

My problem is exactly the same. Only iMac speakers work stably.

  • Airport Extreme, single band crashes, TimeMachine & iTunes 7.4.2 & 7.4.1

    Hi,
I've been getting random crashes on my Single Band APE. It's running v7.4.2, also rolled back to V7.4.1 with the same problem. 17" MacBook Pro (early 2009 unibody), OS X 10.6.2.
Here is my setup. I'm using the APE to extend an existing network. I've two disk drives connected via a USB hub. One is setup as a TimeMachine drive, the other is just storage, it also has my iTunes music library. Regardless of whether I'm connected via WiFi (n) or Ethernet, when playing music using iTunes and when TimeMachine cuts in, I always get a freeze. Sometimes the whole APE will lock-up, the light stays GREEN and it drops everything, WiFi and ethernet connections alike. This then requires a power cycle to kick it back into life. I use this setup to distribute content within my home, it's only ever crashes with this combination - iTunes & TimeMachine.
    Help...

    1) The network is extended because I have two routers, one for G and one for N, I've only a single band APE. The APE is designed to do this.
I'm just trying to point out that whether extending your network with either a static or dynamic WDS, there will be an overall bandwidth loss. When network traffic is high, there is a potential of "crashing" the network.
    2) TimeMachine does work on the APE and has done so for over 18 months now for me, without any problems, only slight network freezing when it kicks in if using WiFi. It may not be fully supported but it does work, albeit with network restrictions. The freezing isn't the problem, the crashes are.
Again, I am only pointing out a potential problem for the crashes. I'm glad you are not experiencing corrupted Time Machine backups in this configuration.
If you read my post, it was about crashing - the freeze during initial TimeMachine backups adds background information to my post.
Yes, thank you, I did read your post. I took the time to try to offer ideas on why you may be experiencing the crashes to help you resolve them.

  • AL iMac Crashes Gigabit Airport Extreme

I purchased the 24" 2.4Ghz aluminim iMac and the latest gigabit Airport Extreme N, a few weeks back. I was already using the previous non-gigabit Aiport Extreme N with a macbook, macbook pro, apple tv, tivo, and xbox 360 with no problems.
After getting the iMac up and running however, my Airport Extreme started crashing every few hours. I replaced it with the new gigabit Airport Extreme but the crashes continued. If I turn the iMac off completely, everything works fine. However, with the iMac on, the Airport Extreme will crash a few times a day. By crash I mean that all devices lose their connection to the Airport and the network is no longer visible to any of the devices. I have to powercycle (unplug) the Airport Extreme and then all devices can connect to the network again - until the next crash.
I've seen that others have problems with the connection being dropped - but is anyone having issues with the Airport Extreme crashing altogether?

I should also note that the iMac and Airport Extreme are not very close to each other. They are abut 25 feet apart in different rooms.

  • Airport utilitiy crashes everytime i try to set up one of two APE

    Hello,
    I have two APE.
They worked fine as Airplay Stations. Today I also updated the firmware to the newest one (is ist 7.6.1). This also worked without any problem. I tried then to extend my network (a FritzBox WLAN ROUTER) in which I was not succesful.
So I reset both of the APE with a Hardware Reset and wanted to make them work as before!
One of them now again works normal, the other causes the Airport Utility Software to crash. Everytime at the same point: when the software is reading the preferences of the APE!
The same crash can i reproduce on my computer and on a second computer. Both Lion 10.7.3.!
So the question is: how can I bring back the second APE to work again..
Best wishes and thanks in forward
    Bernhard

You asked in the Snow Leopard forum. You need to ask in Mavericks for best results.
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/os_x_mavericks
The end of your report mentions reserves VM space. If you go into Disk Utility in Applications/Utilities, select our drive in the sidebar and check how much free space is available.
You need a minimum of 10% free but 15-20% is recommended.

  • AirPort Setup Assistant Crashing

I bought an AirPort Express to add to my existing AirPort Extreme to extend the range of my wireless network in my home.
Each time I try to use the AirPort Setup Assistant to configure the AirPort Express, the application crashes. Sometimes it crashes after the very first setup question; other times it's a few questions in. Invariably, Setup crashes before I can complete the setup.
I am unable to configure my AirPort Express because the Setup application keeps crashing before I can complete the configuration, rendering the AirPort Express useless.
    Any advice?

If it was only that easy.
I have tried configuring through the AirPort Admin Utility, but invariably get an error message saying that the AirPort Extreme base station does not recognize the AirPort Express. (The assigned name for the AirPort Express shows up on the menu, but after the configuration loads, I get the error message, basically putting me back at square one.)
Setup does not work through the Setup Assistant OR Admin Utility. I wasted four hours trying to set up my AirPort Express, to no avail.
But that's not my question or the point.
My question is: Is there a reason why the Setup Assistant crashes? Or should I simply accept the fact that it crashes and "try using the AirPort Admin Utility"--which DOES NOT WORK.
My point is: The documentation for setup is basically useless. Should I simply return the AirPort Express, since it's clear that I'm not the only customer who has found this product to be evertything it's not advertised to be?
    Just wondering.

  • Airport App Crashes in Leopard

Everything went great on the new MacBook Pro
On the >2 year old dual G5 tower with a standard airport card, I can't get airport to work.
It will recognize the "Home Network" in the Wireless menu, but when I try to join it complains about needing a WEP password, which it already has - same password as before. When I hit connect it either complains of "connection failed", "connection timeout", or one one occasion "incompatible security".
When I launch the Airport Management Utility program that came with the airport extreme basestation, it crashes while complaining that I am now missing a "Graphite" library. The Airport Client Monitor program crashes the same way. I can launch "Airport Utility", but it doesn't recognize any base stations even though the network preferences utility does. Sometimes, however, the network preferences utility doesn't see the network.
In the same room, however, my macbook pro running Leopard is doing just fine on the same airport network! What gives?

I should also add the "Airport Utility" finds the basestation just fine using the Macbook Pro and that I was able to access the basestation just fine from the G5 before updating.

  • Airport Disk problems

There seem to be a lot of threads going on about connectivity problems regarding disks connected to Airport Extreme base stations. This http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1155412 is probably the biggest. Since this really is a large issue, I thought I'll post a report of my findings.
Today was the first time I encountered the fact that I couldn't connect from my iMac G5 to my Airport Disk anymore , Finder gave me the following message:
    +*Connection failed*+
+The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again.+
I went to my MacBook pro (waking from sleep) and it gave me the same message.
Restarting the Airport Extreme brought my disk back on my Macs.
I simulated this scenario, to see where it was failing:
*Case 1: let macbook pro sleep*
    1. Fresh reboot of Airport
    2. Mount disk on all macs and one windows xp machine
    3. Put MacBook Pro to sleep (disk still working on other mac)
    4. Wake MacBook Pro
    5. Everything still works on all machines
    *Case 2: let imac sleep*
    1. Fresh reboot of Airport
    2. Mount disk on all macs
    3. Put iMac G5 to sleep
    4. Wake up iMac G5
    5. Disk doesn't work on Macs (AFP), but still works on windows machine (SMB)
In last scenario it looks like the AFP service on the Airport Extreme Base Station crashed. You can manually check this by doing this in Finder menu: *Go -> Connect to server*.
    And type this:
afp://ip.of.your.basestation/ (you can find the ip of your basestation via airport utility)
You will get an "Connection failed", that means the server is not responding. At this point you can still connect to the Airport Disk via the SMB protocol. In the Finder menu: *Go -> Connect to server*
    And type this:
    smb://ip.of.your.basestation/
Use your username and password and you'll be able to connect to the airport disk.
Another way to check if the AFP service is still running on the airport, is to use an portscanner. You can use the one provided by apple in Network Utility. I used nmap.
After a fresh restart the following ports were opened:
    21/tcp open ftp
    53/tcp open domain
    139/tcp open netbios-ssn
    445/tcp open microsoft-ds
    *548/tcp open afpovertcp*
    554/tcp open rtsp
    7070/tcp open realserver
    10000/tcp open snet-sensor-mgmt
After waking the iMac from sleep the following ports were opened:
    21/tcp open ftp
    53/tcp open domain
    139/tcp open netbios-ssn
    445/tcp open microsoft-ds
    554/tcp open rtsp
    7070/tcp open realserver
    10000/tcp open snet-sensor-mgmt
You can see that there is no AFP server (afpovertcp) listening on the Airport anymore.
    I have the following setup:
MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2,33 Ghz
Mac OS X 10.5.1 (fresh install)
    iMac G5 2,1Ghz
    Mac OS X 10.5.1 (upgraded from 10.4.11)
    Airport Extreme Basestation (fast ethernet)
    - 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
    - wpa2 personal
    - file sharing with accounts
    - no guest access allowed
Currently the only workaround I found, is by using the SMB protocol. (Finder -> Go -> Connect to server). This works on all machines, even after waking from sleep.
The problem as far as I can see is twofold:
    1. AFP service on Airport Extreme Basestation is buggy, it justs crashes after it recieves info it doesn't expect.
    2. Leopard sends stuff It shouldn't send.
    Tiger never had this problem.

My AEBS network, internet connection and Airport Disk are all (finally) holding connections. It's been about a day now, so I guess it's going to be ok next week.
Here's some of my story/thoughts in case this helps anyone else who is still struggling with the madness:
First, I bought a TC and connected a USB disk. This was a cacophony of dropped connections, followed by the messages Frodo posted, lost internet connections, etc. A lot of resets, channel changes, restarts, two reformatting of the Airport Disk (via hardwire connection to one of my computers and then reconnecting it to the AEBS), etc. etc. later, I returned the TC for an exchange and bought a simple AEBS and connected that to the Airport Disk.
Same sort of problems again, but this time I don't usually lose my internet or network connection. New problems enter - glacial speed on some/most computers and ok on others. The Airport Disk keeps disappearing and can't reconnect. More restarts.
This is what seems to be working now:
I have every single client computer set to never sleep and that includes turning off the "Put HD to sleep when possible" button. I also set my WPA2 Personal timeout to 500 days. The default is 1 hr. Also, I took the Airport Disk down and connected it to a computer and ran Disk Utility. Found a header problem and fixed it. Followed that with Disk Warrior. More problems, this time an assortment. DW fixed those. Then reconnected the Airport Disk to the AEBS. Now it all works.
I did a bit of reading on WPA2 on Wikipedia and it turns out this scheme sends out some sort of key to the client computers and does it dynamically as the network is up. (This might explain the "unexpected ACL" message I was getting in Disk Utility when checking client computers - there are 3 of them. I assume these are an Access Control List generated by my AEBS; I certainly didn't put them there). Anyway, I got to wondering if the AEBS is trying to generate a new key for the 'group' that hat connected to it and since one or more of the 'group' has nodded off, it is unable to do so and this results in the lost connection followed by 'not operational' message. Maybe it thinks it was being hacked?
Anyway, with both those settings my network is stable, internet is stable and the Airport Disk has been mounted on various desktops now since yesterday. I'll worry about faster speeds later. None o my computers will sleep until an update is released. They don't mind. I have no inclination to spend any more hours fighting with this thing.
FYI, I have eight 10.5.2 computers and three 10.4.11. They are all happy this morning - although for a time yesterday the 10.4.11 client computers were real slow. I shut those down for a while last evening and concurrently changed to Channel 9. I'm using the 802.11n (b/g compatible) setting and I know that is in the 2.4 frequency, which is pretty crowded these days. I think the higher channels are probably less crowded. Anyway, the 10.4.11 computers were ok when restarted last evening and are still ok this morning. All connections held. Ditto for the 10.5.2 clients.
I don't know where the faults came from with the Airport Disk (fixed as described above yesterday), but I do know I did not "Disconnect All Users" in Airport Utility before resetting/restarting the AEBS while the Airport Disk was connected and (perhaps) still shared despite the dropped connection messages. I'm not even sure that disconnect button was available since I never looked.
    Wheew!
Not sure what I'm going to do when the replacement TC arrives. It's a heckuv'n idea and I hate to walk away without at least another trip into the twilight zone. I've lost files before and would have been SOOoooo happy to be able to fish back in time to find them.

  • TimeCapsule (and AirPort extreme too) hangs on large file transfers

    Greetings,
I got a following problem. I had install AirPort connected to my router with copper and extend network with TimeCapsule. TimeCapsule have two USB drives attached, AirPort - one USB. When I am transferring a large file, in a magnitude 2-3Gb or multiple simultaneous transfers of smaller files to/from those USB drives, depending on which drive I am using the AirPort or TimeCapsule get crashed. For plain user it is looks like as of sudden, data transfer stops, led in a front keeps green, and I can not reconnect to the drives. If I powercycle TC or AES everything get back to normal. Are there anyone else experiencing the same issues and if yes, what would be solution ?
    Thank you.

I think we have tried almost every combination of disabling Large Send Offload, TCP offload, IP SEC Offloading, VMQ and Receive Side Scaling possible - in the various places there are - although I will be quite honest - as there are 3 places to do this
for each Server (the related physical and virtual NICs on the HV Server, and also the NIC in the VM) it is possible we may have missed an iteration...
During our testing we have noticed that the symptoms of the problem gets worse the higher the transfer speed is. For example if you transfer to the VM from a desktop with a 100Mbs NIC, there will be subtle lag and a transfer speed of say 10 or so KBs ,
if you use a device with a 1Gbs NIC, you on average achieve 50-70 KBs transfer speeds and the higher the number, the worse the GUI / Server locks up (although the transfer completes just fine).
We also tried throttling the bandwidth via the 2012 GUI - to see if that helped, but none of the changes we made seemed to work, and we did not have time to try the powershell way of doing this.
We did replace one of the VM's NIC with a legacy one as part of our testing today, and now data transfers to the VM from a PC with a 1Gbs NIC run slower at around 30-35 KBs and the are no noticeable GUI freezes, although during the large transfer
it looks like 1 in every 30-40 packets is dropped in a continual ping that runs during the transfer period.
We have done a lot of cable replacing today (out of diligence) but there seems to be no noticeable issue. We also tried and older NC380T dual port NIC we had available and used the standard driver Windows offered instead of an HP one, but the problem
was identical no matter which NIC we used.

  • Why does my new macbook air keep crashing i.c.w. Time Capsule!!!?

I bought my new MBA 11" @ the apple store eaton centre in Toronto. Since my purchase i dec 2010 the MBA crashed often but i thought this was normal (once a week).
Now i connected a brand new Time Capsule & Airport Express (bought @ apple.com) and now it crashes every 30 minutes!!!
--when i try to copy data to the time capsule it crashes after 1,5 gb.
--when i'm listening music via Airport Express the MBA crashes after 20 minutes.
I get a ' filter'  over my screen with in several languages that i need to reboot....
I tried to get support at Apple (via phone) but the suggested that i should visit iCentre (in Ede, The Netherlands were i live).
They took my Apple in repair. Got it for over a week and then they told me that the had run some test and that there was nothing wrong... The invoice was euro 79,-!
...At home i tried to copy files to my Time Capsule and the machine crashes again.... (nothing wrong???)
Why can't i get normal support on this expensive machines....!!!???

Backing up other Ethernet doesn't prevent access via Wi-Fi.
If the Time Capsule creating a wireless network?  If not, you'll need to configure it to do so in order to allow the MBA to connect to it.  If it does, can you connect the MBA to the Time Capsule's network?
Depending on the amount of data you want to transfer, using a USB-to-Ethernet adapter would help things run faster.

  • Safari crashes when quitting

Trying to find a new way of expressing the constant crashing of Safari 3.0.4.
I'm using a G4 Powerbook running 10.4.11, and a MacBookPro running Leopard 10.5.1, both at home and at work, both on airport.
They both crash frequently usually when going back to a previous page or shutting a window. Always after quitting I get "the application Safari quit unexpectedly" do you want to re-open etc
I've tried trashing plists, I've tried resetting everything (I get an immediate crash if I select "close all open pages"), I've tried running Oynx. I'm at a loss...
I've no recent installs that might have affected anything.
Appreciate any advice you might have...
