AIrPort 6.3 out

Came here to solve Express frequent crashing problem and was about to downgrade to v. 6.1 per another thread. When I launched Admin, showed 6.3 availablr. So fAR SO GOOD.

I fixed it.
The audio device ( in my case - a receiver tape-port ) which is connected to the Airport Express,
wasn't connected correctly anymore.
After I corrected this, all was fine again.

  • Airport Express dropping out constantly so I can't print wirelessly

I have an iMacG5 running OSX 10.3.9. I have a DLink wireless router which creates my wireless network that the iMac connects to. Also, as my printer as at the other end of the room, I have an airport express connected via USB to the printer so I can print wirelessly. Everything worked like a dream for about 12 months. Until recently I had no security on this network and although I was aware this was risky, I was reluctant to change anything because it all worked so well. But my paranoia got the better of me and I changed the DLink to WPA security. Ever since then, the airport express has acted very strangely. The connection dropped and I was required to do a hard reset. I did that and everything worked. I felt so smug that I had worked out a computer issue! Little did I know that as soon as I shut down the system the airport express dropped out again. I have since discovered that I don't actually need to shut down for the thing to drop out. It just does it of its own accord.
I have contacted AppleCare 3 times and spent a total of about 4 hours on this to date. No luck. They suggested interference. However my airport icon usually shows either 3 or 4 bars and there is no difference when the thing drops out.
The only thing I have learned is that Airport Express does not have to be reset all the time. In my situation, it is best to just unplug it, let it rest for about 30 seconds and then you should be able to see the thing in the airport admin utility. It does take a while and several rescans in the utility, but eventually it does show up. This at least means I don't have to constantly set it up to join the network.
In fact, really it is a doddle to print! I don't know why people like to just go File-Print when you can go through the delight of getting out of your chair, unplugging Airport Express, waiting 30 seconds, looking at the dust under the cupboard thinking I really must get that, plugging the airport express back in, watching the light change from green to amber, to flashing amber, wait for it...wait for it...it's not happening....waiting...finally - green!. Back to the computer, go to Finder - Applications - Utilities - Airport Admin Utility, not showing up, rescan, not there, rescan, rescan, rescan, still not there, rescan, oh good, airport express is showing up. Now, go to Printer setup utility, delete the printer that is there, then add printer, select rendezvous, add my hp, OK......now I can hit File - Print.
Has anyone got any ideas on how I can join the boring legions of people who are oblivious to the joys of printing my way?

    Hi,
I am currently replying to this as it shows in the iChat Community.
I have asked the Hosts to move it to Snow Leopard  (you should not lose contact with it through any email links you get)
I also don't do Wirelss printing so I can't actaully help either.

  • HT4587 I downloaded Airport Express Utility 5.6 to get my Airport Express to work with the latest Mac OSX 10.7.4, but when I install and run it, it still says my Airport Express is out-of-date and needs the 5.6 utility.

I downloaded and installed Airport Express Utility 5.6 to get my old Airport Express to work with the latest Mac OSX 10.7.4, but when I install and run it, it still says my Airport Express is out-of-date and needs the 5.6 utility. What's up?

It is likely that you downloaded AirPort Utility 5.6.1.  If you checked the requirements, this only runs on Leopard or Snow Leopard Macs.
You have Lion, so you need AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion

  • Airport option grayed out?

I just bought a used Macbook Mac OS X version 10.5.6 I am not able to connect to the internet because the only options it gives me are ethernet and bluetooth. I only have a wireless interenet connection and Airport is grayed out as an interface option in Network Prefrences I even tried to go into Airport uTilities and its says "AirPort Utility was unable to find any Apple wireless devices." I am currently on my own Macbook OS X with a different version and I have no problem connecting to my wireless through the airport. Can anyone help or do I need to take it to the apple store?

You should be able to get to your passwords if you are the admin.
"I set up my WPA2 network and checked the box to show the password and still when I go into AirPort I can't select the box."
Did you restart your computer afterwards?
Suggest that you cross-post in the AirPort where the AP users hang out if you are having problems.

  • Airport Extreme card out of eMac into old G5

After getting a new iMac, i have reassigned all the Macs in our home. My old G5 tower had no wireless card. So, i took the Airport Extreme card out of an old eMac and put it into the G5. It fit, and I thought I had the problem solved. But, I am not getting the network to show up. Is the card compatible?

Current generation iBook G4's have a built in Airport Extreme interface - they don't make use of a user-installable Airport Extreme card.
Does your Mac have an Airport menu item (the fan-shaped icon near the right side of the MacOS menu bar)? If so, it already has an installed Airport interface.

  • Airport Extreme dropping out and can't connect PC anymore

    Hello
Suddenly, a couple of weeks ago, my internet connection dropped in the middle of surfing. I couldn't reconnect, Airport was only seeing the base station spasmodically and when I did try to connect I was being asked for a password which wasn't recognised. Hours later I called the support line and was advised to do a hard reset which I did, new name, same password. Now I'm reconnected most of the time, but it has dropped out a few times and the signal seems generally weaker. Something's not right.
I had not at that point done the July 1st update so it's not to do with that. I haven't a clue why it suddenly started playing up so strangely. (Though I have noticed a new unsecured wireless network in range and wondered if someone was 'hacking')
My main problem is that my business partner, who connects through a pc here (who remained connected incidentally when I first lost the connection) and continued to be able to connect until I did the hard reset. Now I can't connect that pc to the airport extreme. It sees it but gives an error message saying it's out of range and refresh the list when I try to connect. I fiddled about for hours. I've forgotten how the pc was set up in the first place and I'm going nuts. Can anyone help.
    Thanks
    Helen

Disappointed not to see any help on this one.
If it helps anyone out there to help me, I just uploaded the Airport Utility Software to the pc, typed in base station ID and password. Error message, check network connections. No help.
Try to connect the pc again the usual way from the list of available networks, it asks for password, I use it, then it says it needs to be 5 or 10 ASCII characters or 20 hexadecimal.
What I don't understand is that everything was working fine on both machines until two weeks ago when my base station went into spasm, dropped me but happy with pc, when I did the hard reset, keeps me, won't allow pc to connect.
I just don't know what to do now. Of course I suppose I could always make a call and pay £35 to have an apple technician tell me why their hardware suddenly screwed up for no apparent reason.
    Seriously frustrated
    Anyone?

  • Airport utility is not working on Windows. I can configure Airport Expresses with the Macbook but multiple computers with Windows and the latest Airport Utility time out after trying to connect to the router for setup.

I have been trying to setup Airpot Expresses (both old and new models) for a while now with the Airpot Utility 5.6.1 for Windows without any luck. I have tried this on multiple windows machines, factory reseted the devices if I needed to, but I have not had any success since this software arrived. I see the routers on the Airport Utility UI, I click on it then try to connect to set it up. At this point, it gets stuck with a long progress bar trying to connect to the device without any success. I also have a Macbook Pro, and this device & software has had no trouble setting up the routers. The problem is, we are shipping these small routers out to customers who use Windows machines and it is vital that the user can modify the settings using Airpot Utility. I am at a loss for what to do and if we can't find any solutions, we are going to move on to a different company for the routers we ship out.

Thanks a lot i followed the instructions for safe mode (i found out that i was pressing the C button after restarting) i did whats written there but the repair couldn't be performed so in addition i needed to re-formate the HD so i erased the volume and then repaired the disk--> quite disk utilities --> start the installation from the installation DVD.
    Thanks really appreciating your help

  • Airport Express flakes out with 2+ devices

I've had the router for quite some time, and it has never given me issues, until I got my iPhone.
I've used a Nintendo DS, a Nintendo Wii, and my iBook on it and its great. Now that the logic board failed on my G4 (yup, THAT one), I have a Toshiba laptop running both Vista and Ubuntu. Both work great on the Airport.
Enter the iPhone. It connects, and I can browse, but it goes half way into loading the page if the laptop is browsing too, and then all clients get dropped from the Router. If I log out of whatever OS I'm running on the laptop and boot into the other, it still don't work. If the iPhone is shut off, and then the laptop is rebooted/booted into other OS, then the laptop works. Same for the phone. With the laptop off, iPhone works fine.
The airport was originally setup not to hand out IP's. That was done by my wired D-Link router and it handed out 192.168.0.# addresses to everything, passing through the Airport. Worked great for years. Now I've tried setting the Airport to assign IP's, but in doing that, I have lost the ability to configure it from windows as my other machine is wired (it worked before setting the airport to assign IP's).
I have gone as far as setting up Static to EVERYTHING so that IP conflict is not an issue. DNS is right, all pointing at the same address. No subnet issues, Multicast is set to default. No interference robustness. Signal strength is at max, on Channel 6 (was channel 1 first, tried 6 with no luck) I believe security is WEP. Microwave not causing the issue. No house phones at all (rule out 2.4GHz interference) and its not blocked or near anything metallic. None of the other machines (both windows PC's - wired) have issues when this happens. it only effects the wireless clients.
I purchased a new wired router (D-link) and still no luck. I have noticed that my Wii gets a new IP lease every 3 minutes, but that may just be the Wii itself.
Firmware on the Router is the latest one. The Wii is connected fine if either the iPhone or Laptop is online, but not when both phone and laptop are on.

I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, computers connected to the base station, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Airport express crowding out other audio source?

I'm trying to set up a sound system centered around a set of Harman Kardon Soundsticks. There are two inputs: 1) AirPort Express (older, brick generation) for streaming from iOS and OS devices, and 2) a turntable with a line output. Since the Soundsticks only take one input via a 3.5mm aux jack, I need to use a splitter jack to get both inputs to the speakers. Here's the problem:
    1) AirPort alone in splitter jack = system works
    2) Turntable alone in splitter jack = system works
    3) Turntable and AirPort both in splitter jack = AirPort works and Turntable does NOT work
In scenario 3) I can very faintly hear the turntable output as if it were not plugged into anything, just the unamplified vibrations of the needles.
If in scenario 3) I replace the Turntable with, say, my iPhone, the iPhone works. So it is not a problem with the hardware anywhere along the line, as far as I can tell.
I'm baffled, honestly. Could it be something like the AirPort is continusouly providing an output that is crowding out the analog signal into the line? But then why would the iPhone overcome that?
More to the point, does anyone have a solu

I have the same problem: I'm trying to plug in 2 sources (MacBook and Airport Express) to my speakers via a splitter, and the AE seems to be severely distorting ("crowding out", as you put it) my MacBook output. When each of them is plugged in to the splitter separately, all is dandy.
I found that turning down the output of my non-AE source (MacBook, in my instance) helps reduce distortion a little bit, but not to a level that it can be properly listened to.
Anybody have a solution for this?

  • New topic, old problem: Airport Express dropping out

I'm aware of the many threads on Airport Express issues on here but since no solution has emerged I feel I must rake over it again in the hope that someone at Apple will pick up the ball and create a fix for AEX BDS or Bizarre Dropout Syndrome as I call it.
Playing my iTunes music, via my 2T Time Machine>MacBook>AEX (extending my network to the basement) used to work seamlessly until...approximately... I upgraded to Leopard>Snow Leopard although if I'm honest I can't swear to this coincidence. Anyhow the symptoms are the similar as other ppl report elsewhere on this forum: ie Connecting prompts a microburst of a tune then randomly more bursts of varying length, never longer then 15secs, then after an hour or so it suddenly decides to play continuously for 4 or 5mins at a time but always dropping out again ad nauseam.
I called Apple tech support who could only offer it was interference from neighbour's WiFi networks at work, I checked but my neighbours are all on different channels to me. I have tediously checked, rechecked, rebooted, reconfigured, reinstalled iTunes and OS, moved the unit even tried a brand new 11n AEX but to no avail, always the same problem (so at least I can rule out a hardware issue with the AEX unit itself). I'm hoping there is a fix out there.......otherwise the AEX units are just very expensive paperweights.

I do not know if this answer will help much, but it is based on solid experience.
I tried using wi-fi and it kept dropping out.  I went through 3 routers!  A local salesperson told me enough with the new routers, it's your d*mn ISP.
Well, I started using speedtest.net to monitor my ISP's performance/signal strength.  I discovered that my signal FREQUENTLY dropped to very low levels.
My theory is that whenever the signal dropped, which was very, very often, I lost wi-fi connectivity.
I went to ethernet and never looked back, but with all these wireless devices, I'm wondering if I need to take a look at wifi again.  My ISP has cleaned up its act, so I might do better.
Unfortunately, I haven't tried it yet, so I can't announce the results.  But I thought it might possibly relate to your situation.

  • Airport Express dropping out

I am using an airport express to join my network and have connected a network printer to it using and ethernet cable. I have previously used this airport express to connect a windows PC and never had a problem. I recently purchased an iMac to replace the windows PC and no longer need the Airport for the windows PC, so I am now using it for my network printer. The problem is that the Airport now keeps dropping the network. The Yellow light flashes momentarily and then re-connects, and while this is happening my printer is not on-line. The funny thing is that it only happens when the iMac (which is only several feet from the Airport express) is on. If I put the iMac to sleep it works fine. If I reboot the iMac it works again for a while but eventually starts dropping out again. I have tried power-cycling the Airport and printer but to no avail. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
P.S. all software and firmware are up to date for both the iMac, the Airport Express, and my Airport Extreme.

    Welcome to the discussions!
By close the laptop, do you mean it goes into standby or a sleep mode? Or, are you using a larger monitor, closing the laptop and not using the laptop screen?
If it's the former, you need to check on the HP to see if there is a "remember this network setting", "stay alive" or something similar so the connection is not lost.
When you close the lid on the HP, it is probably blocking access to the internal antenna within the laptop. If the top is closed, the only way the radio waves can be seen would through the sides of the laptop.
Unless you are seeing intermittent drops in the wireless connection when the laptop is open, it sounds like the Express is delivering a constant wireless signal. Download www.istumbler.net to get a good look at the signal strength and noise on your network. The strength indicators on most laptops are not very accurate.

  • MAC MINI- Airport Connection cutting out regularly

MAC MINI- 10.4.11 1.5GHz intel core solo
My mac (above) keeps losing airport connection (to my BT homehub router-which is newish)- Has been running fine for years-changed my router-was still running fine for a few weeks AND NOW....keeps cutting out wireless signal for no reason. I have other macs/comps on same signal (nearer router also!) which are unaffected-only mac mini is... I have tried everything I can think of and been on forums etc all day...
Cuts out-won't recognise my router- then after a restart it sometimes comes back on-sometimes just comes back on itself after an hour or so also.... When its on, the signal gradually loses strength till it gets to zero-then disconnects and won't recognise any wireless devices (it usually lists a few that are in my building)....SO- router is OK as other comps are fine- it must be mac mini fault- have had no software updates recently either-so really don't know what to do next! help!

    Hi,
thanks for your reply-I have tried every channel possible (before posting my first post)- but like I say -it connects fine at first (sometimes-especially if comp has been shut down overnight)-then after about 15-30 mins the bars start dropping and then it goes and won't come back on... I know it is not the router as my other mac (which is further away from router and also is a much older computer) has never had any problems like this before and doesn't have any while the mini is disconnecting..
I have tried everything I can think of and have spent hours and hours reading through other similar posts- but can't find anything that works....
If the mini macs have a weak antenna then why has it been ok in connecting since I bought it (was one of the first mini's to come out) ? Do you think it gets weaker with age? Why is it ok for a bit then disconnects, then is ok, then is not etc etc ??
Thanks for your help anyway-any other suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated as I am about to throw it out the window!!cheers.

  • Airport Express Cutting Out

    Hello...
I've had my AX working for months just fine. I've been through firmware upgrades without a problem. But last week the airport started acting a little crazy. I'll be happily surfing the internet and all of the sudden all the bars will drop out and i'll lose my connection. Meanwhile the AX is still showing a green light. At first i suspected that it might have something to do with the latest OS upgrade and that it was just my computer, but my girl is having the same problem with her iBook which is still at 10.4.4.
I'm getting very frustrated because the only way that i can get it to work again is by unplugging it. Sometimes that will work for an hour or two, other times it will only work for 20 min before i have to play the unplug-replug game.
If any one has any thoughts i would really appreciate it.
    12" Powerbook 1 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Good news: my problem seems to be solved! My AirPort Express hasn't dropped the Internet connection for 1 1/2 weeks now, when it (and its AirPort predecessors) hadn't managed to go more than a day or two in the past few years.
The big change was a change in my DSL service. I subscribe to a DSL deal through my university that is co-run by Sprint. In the past, the DSL setup used a PPPoE connection and an Efficient Networks SpeedStream DSL modem. With this setup, as I've discussed earlier in this thread, the AirPort connection would be lost regularly (sometimes after an hour or two, sometimes up to a day or two) -- no Internet connection, no access to my USB printer that was plugged in to the AirPort, and it wouldn't work with any computer that I tried once it went down.
What changed was an upgrade in the DSL service that is offered by this Sprint-university deal, which is now supposedly "up to" 4-6 times faster than the old service. Instead of a PPPoE connection directly to the university, we now simply get a standard Sprint IP through DHCP, and login to the university's Cisco VPN when we need to access university-restricted materials. The new DSL modem is a "Sprint 660 series."
So it appears that the lost connections were not due to interference, as I had always believed; in the last 1 1/2 weeks the same sources of interference presumably have all still been around. Instead, the problem must have been due to one of three things:
    (1) the DSL connection itself (as offered by Sprint);
    (2) the DSL modem (the Efficient Networks SpeedStream;
    and/or (3) the PPPoE connection.
I don't know any of the technical details behind any of this, but my problem has been solved by some combination of Sprint's upgrade to faster service, the new DSL modem, and the removal of the PPPoE login. Hopefully this information will be helpful for others experiencing dropped connections, some of whom might have one or more of these things in common with my previous setup. (I doubt there is a single cause of problems, though, so I'm sure there will be others with frequent dropouts who don't have any of these details in common with me.)

  • Airport Express dolling out different networks

Consider our airport express that, according to the airport express utility, shows the 10.0.1.x network as the LAN configured for DHCP for connecting computers.  Despite this apparent configuration, my macbook air receives an address on the 192.168.x.x network, while at the exact same time, the Dell Inspiron receives an address on the 10.0.1.x network.  The macbook is allowed through to the internet via it's 102.168.254.1 gateway received from the airport, while the Dell, though it can ping the 10.0.1.1 gateway is also receives from the airport, is not allowed onto the internet.  Temporary fix was to manually configure the Dell with an IP address on the 192.168.x.x network.  Power re-set of airport, computers, and DSL modem do nothing.  I haven't seen any other posts to this issue.  Anyone, anyone, Bueler?  Many thanks.

I can find info on a Siemens Speedstream 4200. Is this the device that you have?
This device is a modem/router that is providing DHCP and NAT services. By default, this device hands out IP addresses to clients in the 192.168.x.x. range.
So, a device that connects to your 4200 gets a 192.168.x.x IP address. The manual for the 4200 confirms this:
SpeedStream Router - Optus Internet Help
The Apple routers use the 10.0.1.x range by default. Any devices that connect to the Apple are getting 10.0.1.x range IP addresses.
Even if you do not have the exact version of the 4200 in the link above, based on the info that you have provided, you do have two devices on the network, both provding DHCP and NAT services.  You only want one device on a network acting as a router delivering DHCP and NAT service.
The AirPort needs to be configured in Bridge Mode to take it out of router mode so that any devices that connect to the AirPort will receive the same 192.168.x.x IP addresses as devices that connect to the 4200.

  • Airport Express drop out

Hi. First post here and I'm in need of help. I've connected my Airport Express to stream iTunes from my PC (Vista OS) to my stereo and while I can wirelessly connect to my network, after approximately 30 minutes of play, the signal drops out and the Airport Express is no longer recognized by either the utility, my iTouch remote app or iTunes.
I then tried a reset, disabled the wireless function and configured the device to stream via ethernet but now have the same problem.
I have changed my Firewall settings to allow all network and program rules access to the Utility and iTunes and have even disabled the Firewall with no luck.
    Help!!

have you checked for _*wireless interference*_ ?
perhaps your neighbor's wireless networks interfere with yours. you could download iStumbler (free) or AirRadar (it has a trial period) and note the channels other networks in your vicinity are broadcasting on. change the channel of your network as far away as possible from those.

  • Airport Express drop-out - useless device

If you're reading this and you haven't purchased an Airport Express yet.... Don't.
I've been one of the most loyal Apple devotees for the last 15 years but have had enough. There was a time when Apple products were faultless - they always did what they were supposed to do.
Airport Express is the latest shambles to damage Apples brand even further. What is the point of making a device to stream my myriad of other Apple devices if it continually drops out? And seems there is no remedy which is evidenced by others frustrations on various blogs. TOTAL waste of money.
Apple would do well to make less products and make sure that they actually worked rather than an increasing number of products that don't eg iphone5, Airport Express.

I have purchased several of them. Unlike the cheaper routers I've tried, none have ever failed. Countless thousands of them have been working flawlessly for others all over the world for years.
Wireless networking is subject to a number of environmental variables that can preclude success no matter what product you use.
If you believe yours is faulty return it. You have 14 days from the purchase date for a complete refund.
Everyone I know with an iPhone 5 loves it too. I can only guess those who didn't returned theirs for a complete refund.
