Airport adapter

Is there a way to check and see if the airport adapter in my MacBook is working properly or not? I've been experiencing some connection problem these couple of days.
Signal strength is fine...but it would just stop working from time to time...and sometimes it's very slow.
Should I just take it back to my apple dealer for them to take a look?
Patrick

All I can say about what it does is to use different DNS servers than the ones your ISP provides. My ISP provides DNS servers that get bogged down because so many people are using them at the same time. Certain times of the day saw peaks in slowdowns. It was suggested to me that I try using these other DNS servers and it speeded things up immediately. I have no real detailed insight into the technological explanation for this, except that which would be conjecture.
As for Interference Robustness: it depends on what types of electronic devices are near your machine when you're using it. I had an old cordless phone that would choke my Airport almost immediately when I would use it in front of the computer. Interference Robustness wasn't an option then. So I replaced the phone.
If you're getting interference near a microwave or whatever, use it. I haven't had to use it, myself, but that's not to say that others won't. It's relative to your environment.

  • Mac Mini Internal Speaker and Airport Adapter

I have the 2008 Mac Mini Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83Ghz. I have been having problems with the internal speaker and the internal airport adapter.
    Speaker:
80% of the time, the internal speaker isn't working when booted into OS x, and when the mini is starting up it doesn't make the startup sound.
    Airport Adapter:
The signal drops to 1 bar all the time with the router but a couple feet away. It would start off as 4-5 bars and then drop to 1-2 bars and then stay there.
    Please Help!
    Thanks,
    Jimmy

    I FIGURED IT OUT!
To get this to work, you need to buy two things:
    1) Audio Hijack Pro software by RogueAmoeba, with the SoundFlower plugin.
    2) Griffin iMic.
Once you've installed both the hardware and software, do the following:
    1) In Hijack Pro, create a session with source type: audio device, and SoundFlower 2Ch as the input, and iMic as the output.
    2) Create a second session again with source type: audio device, and SoundFlower 2Ch as the input, but change the output to "Built-in Output."
    3) Click the "Hijack" button for both sessions, so Hijack Pro is hijacking audio from Soundflower and routing it to both outputs simultaneously.
    4) In System Preferences/Sound, change sound output to "SoundFlower 2Ch".

  • Ad hoc network with Non-airport adapter

I'd like to be able to set up an ad hoc network to communicate between my PowerMac G5 and an iPod touch. My mac does not have an airport card. I have an ASUS wireless usb adapter. I know this works because I can communicate with my wife's iMac if I create a network on her machine (it has airport built-in). I can't see any way to create a network on my machine, as there is no airport available in Network settings. Is there a way to create an ad hoc network using a 3rd-party USB adapter?
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi there,
Did you ever resolve this? I am in the exact situation. Thanks for any tips.

  • Where can I find an Airport Adapter Card?

    Hello again!
Just like the topic asks, ... any thoughts besides ebay?
    Thanks.

Which MDD 1 Ghz Mac is this? Is it the one with Firewire 800, or just Firewire 400? This article explains how to tell the two apart:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42739
As you can tell the one with Firewire 800 can take Airport Extreme cards, while the one without can only take the old Airport card which can be found at places like this:

  • Can I use a airport express to get internet connection to a Mac Mini that doesn't have wireless by adding it to my existing wireless network?

I bought a first gen Mac Mini for our daughter and it doesn't have internal airport adapter and was wondering if I got a airport express can I plug it in my daughters room and use it as a local router and just use the eithernet connect from it.  Or would a airport extreme work better for this job.  I have a wireless cable modem that we connect to.  I also have a second question I have a iMac G4 that picks up the wireless signal but will not connect to it does it have to be a Apple airport for it to work or should it be able to connect to any broadcasted signal.  Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure I quite understand. Do you wish to use the AEX to provide a wireless connection for a device that has an Ethernet port but no wireless capability of its own? You wish to use it in place of a wireless card that isn't internally installed? If so, the answer is, "Yes." It will work as a wireless access point. But you must have an extant wireless network because the AEX won't have an Internet connection when used in this way.
If you have an existing wireless network with a wireless router connected to your cable/DSL model or your modem is a wireless router as well, then the AEX may connect to it in bridge mode. Note that AEXs don't always play nice with non-Apple routers. Some work; others don't.

  • DHCP doesn´t work to acquire IP adress via Airport

Some words to my wireless configuration. My WLAN AP is an AVM FritzBox WLAN 7050 with internal DHCP services disabled. DHCP services in the 192.168.9.0 network are provided by a Linux Server on 192.168.9.1 (range 192.168.9.200-254). Windows WLAN clients haven´t any problems to connect to the AP and get their IP from the linux dhcp server.
I can use the assistent to get access to the network. There are two stages, the first where i had to search for WLAN AP´s (which shows me the AVM box) and then provide the WPA2 password. This works and the connection to the WLAN AP is established. The next step is the connect to network button. Pressing this button the first time, i get a message that no connection to the network could be established. Pressing the button a second time gives me a connection and an IP from the range 192.168.9.200-254 is correctly assigned as well as the router adress (which is 192.168.9.99),
I know can use the WLAN network until i decided to shutdown Mac OS X and reboot. When i know restart the laptop, no connection to the network could be established. The DHCP server logfile on my linux box doesn´t show any DHCP requests during the boot phase. The airport connection tab shows "a private adress is assigned to the adapter and a network connection may not be possible ". When i go the the network connection tab, i see that for the airport adapter, the adress is 169.something. I can press the "renew dhcp release" button is often as possible, nothing happens and no log entries shows up on my dhcp server.
The only thing i can do to get a working network connection is to start the assistent again, which is very annoying.

  • Westell USB 802.11g adapter with an Imac?

I just switched to a new DSL provider who sold me a wireless router and a USB adapter. They are both made by Westell. I have my laptop running wireless no problem as well as anohter machine runing ethernet fine. But I have an Imac running 10.3.2 that I need to use a USB "airport" adapter to connect.
When I purchased the adapter I was told that it would work with OS 10 but now that I got it no where on the insructions does it mention Macs. And the instillaton software is PC only. I went to Westell web site and no help there either.
I called the DSL providers tech support but they were no help and told me to call Westell. They are closed and are only open bankers hours anyway so I thought I would see if anyone has any ideas.

    You were misinformed.
The Westell device is not Mac compatible there are no drivers for it.
I would suggest you get an Airport card.

  • Substitute for original Airport card

I have a DVD Special iMac with a dead ethernet port. I had been using it with a USB ethernet adapter. Going through the junk in the closet, I found the Airport adapter card that came with the Airport card for my iBook and the old graphite base station that went with it. Since Apple dropped support of the graphite base station with OS X Tiger, it went in the closet and a new Netgear WiFi router went into service. It happens that the guts of a graphite base station is a Lucent WaveLan Silver PCMCIA card. I got to wondering if the WaveLan card would work in the iMac adapter. The WaveLan card is longer than an Airport card since it has an antenna built in, but a bit of snipping with a wire cutter removed part of the plastic bracket on the adapter which was in the way. There's an antenna jack under a tiny plug on the card, and lo! the iMac's antenna plug fits it. I plugged it all together and plugged the iMac back in to the wall.
It works. No extra drivers or anything. OS 9.2.2 works. OS 10.4.11 works. Apple System Profile sees it as an Airport card. The old graphite airport base stations are cheap (there's a big pile of them at our Goodwill store for $15 each). You do need the adapter, which is also usually cheap because people who bought Airport cards for their iBooks didn't need the adapter.
I figured the WaveLan card might work in OS9 because they were supported on Lombard and Pismo PowerBooks, but unlike the PowerBooks, it also works in OS X without a 3rd party driver.

John, Welcome to the discussion area!
The second choice would be an Ethernet wireless adapter. These devices require no drivers and therefore will work with any Ethernet device.

  • Slightly damaged airport card, unstable connection, & malloc errors? Fixes?

    Hello!
I've got a 500 mhz iMac G3, running 10.3.9 with 256 MB of ram - and may add more soon. It has an original Airport card installed, via the Airport adapter. This card has a dent in one of the sides, but seems to power on fine.
Here's the problem: if I click on the Airport symbol in the menu bar, the iMac can see our home network with the Airport card installed - so I know the card is at least working in this regard. If I select the network and enter the WEP key, it sits there for a moment before giving a "There was an error connecting to the AirPort network * SSID *." box. Clicking "Try again" hasn't helped. Interestingly, the "Console.log" log shows a list of malloc errors:
"* malloc[@@@]: error for object 0x3----0: Double free", where the dashes are various hex values, and the @@@ differs by application: Attempting to connect via Internet Connect gives a @@@ of 385, while attempting to connect via Network Setup Assistant gives a @@@ of 329, and attempting to connect via the airport menu bar icon gives a @@@ of 208. These errors seem to appear when I type the WEP key in.
To see if the airport card was broadcasting, I tried to setup a computer-to-computer network from the iMac, then connect to it from my G4 (400mhz, Tiger, 1.5 GB RAM, Original Airport card). The network initialized OK, but the G4 could not see it. Entering the SSID manually into the Internet Connect application still gave a "There was an error connecting to SSID" box. I then noticed that the iMac kept "disconnecting" and "reconnecting" to its own network every 10 seconds or so, as if the Airport card kept resetting. I also tried creating a network on the G4, then connecting to it from the iMac to see if it could join and if the malloc errors kept showing up - it coudn't join or see the network, but there were no malloc errors in the console!
This is the same problem that occurred when I put the card into another old iMac. Therefore, I believe that it's a problem with the individual card, not the system. At the same time, the fact that the memory allocation errors occur when I enter the WEP key - and not at other times - is a little odd. I've assumed that the dent in the card was the problem before, but now I'm beginning to suspect a firmware issue with the card itself.
    So, the questions:
    A. Is there a firmware update for the card?
    B. Is there anything else I can try? I will try to setup an open network to test the card then.
    C. If the damage to the card is the culprit, then the card is useless and must be replaced, correct?
    D. Is there somewhere I can find an original airport card for (well) under the $150 or so you usually find it online? I am aware that they are old and hard to find.
    Thanks a bunch,
    -Dan

See my post about using the WaveLan card out of an old graphite "flying saucer" Airport Base Station. My iMac accepted one as an Airport card. The old ABSes are cheap since they don't work with new releases of OS X any more.

  • After update airport interface doesn't work when security is enabled

    Hi all.
After update of Leopard to v.10.5.2 wireless stop working. As I discovered wireless without security are working, but when I apply any secure methods (wpa,wpa2,wep) airport adapter can't connect to router though I can see available networks. My wireless router is ZyXel p-600 series (P660HTW2EE). I installed last update of airport. Nothing changes.
    1) Any idea about how to resolve the trouble?
    2) How could I see detailed log of airport about troubles during connections?
    3) Where are located config files which save passwords and other settings for wi-fi networks?
    Thanks a lot in advance.

I would delete your network password.
Use spotlight or, go to the Utility folder and open "*Keychain Access*" ---> look in the "System" tab and delete the network password for your network.
Let me know if it does not work.

  • Intel iMac on Airport Extreme - NO UPSTREAM!

Within the last day I have completely lost wifi data uploading capabilities on my iMac. First noticed it when trying to upload to my iDisk. Using speedtest.net... no upstream. I have tested two Macbook Pros on the same network and they work fine.
    Any ideas?

It would help by posting some logs of what is going on while you have the IMac in this condition. Open a command prompt and do sudo tail -f /var/log/system.log and paste it as a reply to this thread.
Have you tried turning the AirPort adapter on and off and/or rebooting?

  • HT4259 Is it still possible to configure an AirPort Extreme as a Wireless/Ethernet bridge?

    Hi,
I have a 4th generation 3TB Time Capsule as my primary wireless device.  I have tried configuring my 4th gen AirPort Extreme as a bridge (passive wireless to Ethernet bridge, not active wireless router) and despite two firmware resets, am unable to do so with either Airport Utility 6.1 or 5.6.1.  I am using a retina MacBook Pro with 10.8.2 to run the Airport Utility.  I know this used to work with earlier versions of the AirPort Extreme firmware (currently 7.6.1 for both devices) and earlier versions of the Airport Utility, because I have done it before and it has worked fine, although I haven't tried this for more than 3 years.  Is it still possible to do this, or am I missing something?

If you are correct about not being able to configure the Extreme as a bridge then I guess I'm stuck with running the Extreme in extend mode.
We only answer questions when we've tested it ourselves.  But, you can prove to yourself that the AirPort Extreme cannot act as a simple wireless to Ethernet bridge by trying to configure it to "join" a wireless network. You will see that the Ethernet ports are not enabled in this type of setup.
Configuring the AirPort Extreme to "extend" a wireless network will enable the Ethernet ports. I'm sure that you understand that although the Extreme has Gigabit Ethernet ports, the "Ethernet" signal that appears at the LAN ports will only be as fast as the wireless connection to the AirPort Extreme allows.
Perhaps surprisingly, the best that Cisco has to offer in terms of a wireless to Ethernet bridge is an 802.11b/g device with 100 Mbps Ethernet ports. Netgear does a bit better at least offering 802.11n capability, but still 100 Mbps ports.
The AirPort adapter or a USB wireless adapter might be the simplest way to go if you are concerned about adding an additional wireless access point. Good luck.

  • Airport signal is low

    hi everybody
I have a small wireless network at home and two macs which connect to it and from there to the web. My first mac is a macbook and the second machine is a 1st generation MacPro. The Macpro until yesterday was connected via ethernet while the macbook via airport. Both machines were running smoothly. Today my local Apple dealer installed the airport card at my macpro, tested it at THEIR WLAN and I went home hoping that I'd get rid of ethernet cables.
However the signal I get from my airport card at the macpro is very very weak. With a maximum of five I get a one, maybe a two. At the same time if I turn on my macbook and leave it right next to my macpro, the macbook will work with a signal of five. So I have two machines at the VERY SAME part of the house with two totally different signal levels.
Could it be that the macbook has a more powerful airport adapter? Could it be that the apple dealer did a bad job? Am I missing some other hidden setting in order to make my macpro work as it should?
Any help is more than welcome
    ps1 my modem/router is a US Robotics
PS2 both machines run on 10.4.11

Your problem from what I can deduce is the same as mine. THE OPERATING SYSTEM OS X 10.5.1 & 10.5.2. Although Apple hasn't admitted the problem yet. Don't expect a solution anytime soon or at least until soon after they admit the problem. The problem started for me when I updated 3 of the 5 Macs I have on my home (Airport Extreme Snow) wireless network to OS X 10.5.2. The machines that still have 10.4.11 are working just fine. The network spends more time "searching" than networking. I am sure that the recent network/security updates included in the recent updates are causing the problems, but I can't seem to find any definitive answers, just vague guesses.
ANYBODY OUT THERE WITH REAL ANSWERS PLEASE POST THEM, THANKS in advance

  • Airport status ok. Doesn't connect to internet.

I boot my MacBook up, and instantly my AirPort status says im fully connected to my home network. I load up Safari or Firefox and it doesn't connect. Firefox eventually says cannot connect to server but Safari just continually says "contacting http://xxx.xxxxxx.xx.xx" in the status bar. It doesn't matter what website I try either. It just doesnt seem to want to connect.
Any ideas on how to fix it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Curtis.

A quick and easy thing to try:
Disable the Airport adapter, then enable it. I've seen a problem with the same symptoms and that resolved it. The problem even persisted through a reboot of the machine. Weird.

  • Wi-Fi: No Hardware Installed on MacBook Pro 8,2 (15 inch, Late 2011)

    Hi Everyone,
For the second time now, I have to bring my Macbook Pro 8,2 (macbookpro8,2, 15 inch, late 2011) running Mountain Lion back to the Genius Bar due to a unrecognized Wi-Fi Airport adapter. The computer was purchased in March of 2012.
The problem started as I was watching 'The Daily Show" online, when suddenly, I lost connection. I clicked on the wi-fi adapter icon on the top menu bar, and saw that no access points were available when there normally were over 20, including mine in the house. I went into the network settings under system preferences and saw that the wi-fi card was off (although it was just on and still showed the full-signal indicator in the menu bar), and attempted to click the button to turn it back on with no response. All other options were either greyed-out or displayed no information. The Hardware tab didn't even display and the mac address suddenly became all zeros.
I rebooted the computer, only to discover the wi-fi indicator on the menu bar displaying no signal. Upon clicking on the icon, the dreaded "Wi-Fi: No Hardware Installed" was displayed. I tried resetting the SMC and PRAM/NVRAM with no success. I also rand the Hardware Troubleshooter ( Option - D upon bootup ) which neither saw the communications device nor reported finding any problem.
I brought it to the Genius Bar, and they ended up replacing BOTH the Logic Board, Wi-Fi adapter, and connection cable between the wi-fi adapter and logic board on July 23, 2012.
Now, it's October 10, 2012, and last night, as I was working through a VPN tunnel on the terminal on one of our remote servers, the SAME THING happened AGAIN! The connection was dropped, same scenario as above, and upon bootup I was greeted with the  "Wi-Fi: No Hardware Installed" message again.
The hardware magically disappeard with no mention of this in the Console, as far as I can tell. The Console mentions the loss of connection and inability to contact DNS, but nothing relating to hardware.
For the record, the bluetooth continued to function both times I've had this issue. The first time this happened, I was running Lion and now I'm running Mountain Lion.
So apparently there is something really wrong with either the physical enclosure causing a short somehow, the quality of the Broadcom chip on this wi-fi device, or there's some type of software/power causing the chip to short out.
My compouter is as protected as can be - it's in a Speck plastic housing with a keyboard cover, which was purchased after the first incident, I use it on a hard flat plastic laptop tablet at home, and carry it around in a Timbuk2 Laptop bag. It also has never been dropped.
What's the problem here? Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks and all the best of luck and success solving your own computer problems

Sorry for the late reply. I had a bad experience with the Apple Store and the 'Genius' Bar where I live. However, in the end, I received my MacBook Pro back from repair and everything is working.
Like I said in my previous post, the first time the Wi-Fi broke, I was using Lion. The mother (Logic) board was replaced as well as the Wi-Fi card.
The second time it broke, I was using Mountain Lion. Booting up the Recovery partition and Snow Leopard (new install) did not solve the issue. The Apple Store confirmed that the Wi-Fi card was broken through various testing, which I observed.
Since the attenna wires for the Wi-Fi run through the display, we decided the next logical step was to replace the Wi-Fi card and the display. The reasoning is that there could have been a short or cross connection in the attenna wiring that was causing the Wi-Fi cards to short-out/burn-out. The Bluetooth continued to work in both cases the Wi-Fi failed, meaning that it was unlikely a cable problem.
Since the display and wi-fi have been replaced (20121025), I've had no problems. The wi-fi card is working.
I'm glad the kext file solution has worked for you. I've seen posts on this solution; however, after determining that this was indeed a hardware failure (by using Recovery console, booting from Snow Leopard, and using Hardware Troubleshooter (it didn't even see the Wi-Fi) ), I didn't bother with fiddling with the kext (driver) files. Besides, this hardware is supposed to be designed to work with the OS without any problems whatsoever. Shame on Apple if they don't ship proper drivers for their hardware!
