Airport Admin Utility with 2Wire Router?

I hope this isn't a dumb question, but is it possible to use Airport Admin Utility with a 2Wire wireless router? If it is, does anyone know what data needs to go in the address and password fields when launching Airport Admin? I've tried the IP address of the router and the WEP password as well as the pass we use to administrate 2Wire on the web, none of which find our router.
TY!

OK. Here's how I understand it.
Your 2Wire has an admin panel built into it. You've accessed it, you can manage the tools. (I worked inside three of 'em this week) You are not going to get any additional functionality with AAU.
The AAU is designed to manage Airport BaseStations and/or Expresses (someone stop me if I'm too far off-base,here).
You cannot manage a non-Apple Base Station with AAU, just because it's on your mac.
Get an Airport baseStation if you want to use the AAU.
What I don't know is what you're trying to connect to...that's asking for passwords...passwords that you don't have.
Could you be AAU'ing into a neighbor's wireless device?

  • Airport admin utility with Hawking base station?

    Hello;
I just bought an iMac with OS 10.4.2. Previously I was using a Hawking router with wireless, but I connected it to my old laptop by ethernet. Now I would like to use wireless. It works fine, except I would like to set-up the Hawking base station with security. Admin utility does not see the Hawking. Can this be done without buying an airport express or extreme? (I have checked the discussions but it seems no one has tried this. I have also looked at the Hawking websites but there are no patches that I can find)

Thanks guys for the quick response. However, (perhaps I'm an idiot) but the only thing that happened when I punched in the IP address you gave me into the browser was "could not find the server". No utility opened. I tried it in both Safari and Firefox to the same affect. Am I doing that right?

  • Airport admin utility and Vista

I have upgraded to Vista and found that I can't use my Airport Express any more. According to an employee at a local Apple Store there is a compatibility problem between Vista and the Airport Admin Utility.
Is there any news on when an update will be made available?

I can use the airport express (AX)'s airport admin utility with my Toshiba laptop (vista pre-installed); I installed it out of the box when I bought the AX. Using it was not intuitive for someone not a little familiar with networking i would guess. Many report not "seeing" the AX when they scan/rescan using the apple utility on their windows PC. My suggestion is to use the "other" button and type in the factory default IP address for the AX unit which is 10.0.1.1 and the factory default password which is public.
You should then be able to access the AX settings.
--One caveat: this requires that your PC (i.e. windows networking) is detecting the AX wireless signal enabling you to connect to the AX itself.
--ALSO, If you or someone else previously changed the AX settings to be a closed network (i.e. AX won't "broadcast" it's SSID) you won't necessarily see it in your network connections unless you have previously set up your PC to connect to the specific network name specified in the AX settings. (This is a security measure some may use to prevent the average, uninformed wireless leech from detecting your network, but with a little reading and a few utilities readily available on the net you can still detect it. And honestly IMHO as far as the avg guy leeching off you goes, just set-up a security protocol like WPA/WPA2 or WEP and forget about hiding you broadcast SSID. Helps prevent confusion when friends need to use your network. If you like this kind of info check-out: http://www.ethicalhacker.net/).
If you have fiddled with the settings previously and don't mind a reset where you'll lose prior config settings on the AX, you can do a hard reset to factory default:
    see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044
    for how to do that.
In Vista, if you saved the settings for your connection to the AX (assuming you had it working at some time)and then do a factory default reset, you may have problems getting on the AX again b/c Windows is using the old info for the connection. I found it easiest to delete the old connection that was saved in the Network and Sharing Center area under Manage wireless networks, which allowed me to connect to the factory default settings AX wireless network by choosing from available networks.
OH and remember there is about a 45sec delay after updating your settings before the AX network is up again. YOU WILL DROP YOUR CONNECTION (temporarily) when you update settings in the AX.
That was a bit of a ramble;hope it helps some. It's info I pieced from various posts on this forum and apple support docs.

  • How can I get AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow 4.2.5 to work with OS10.6?

I've upgraded to the latest version of Mac OS and now AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow 4.2.5 won't run. Any suggestions on how to either run this utility or otherwise get access to my old Snow Dual Airport via another method? Airport Utility doesn't see the device, despite repeated scans. My computer and iPad connect no problem to the device, but both iPod and iPhone won't take and hold an IP address. (If any one can help me solve this issue, I can live without access the Airport.)
    Thanks,

I've upgraded to the latest version of Mac OS and now AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow 4.2.5 won't run. Any suggestions on how to either run this utility or otherwise get access to my old Snow Dual Airport via another method?
Unfortunately, you will need another Mac running a much earlier version of OS X to be able to install AirPort Admin Utility and make any settings chances to the router.
Since the normal life of a wireless router is around 5-6 years of use, now might be the time to consider a new router that will provide far better performance than the older Graphite/Snow AirPort.

  • Configuration Error with Airport Admin Utility. Where is the newer version?

I am trying to make a change in Airport Admin . I am getting a pop-up saying
"Configuration Error" This version of Airport Admin Utility does not support this base station. You can't update the software for this base station, but you may be able to make configuration changes to it". ...
It says go to apple.com/support to locate a newer version - but I can't find one.
Does anyone know where it is?

Your first post indicated that you were using "AirPort Admin Utility".
If you have the new square 802.11b/g/n AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) ou don't want to use that.
Instead you want to use "AirPort Utility".

  • Airport Admin Utility can no longer access Airport Extreme, what now?

I have an Airport Extreme that worked fine for a long time with a specific IP. They sold out and the new company came in and installed new equipment. The settings had to change on the Airport. After that, I lost my ability to print through the Airport USB port.
I tried to resolve the problem the other day. My Airport Admin Utility saw the Airport, but I couldn't access it. When I clicked configure, a window came up saying "Reading configuration from base station", then a Password login window came up. I enter my password, it says "Reading configuration from base station", then it says "An error occurred while trying to access the base station. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again.". It does the same thing whether I enter the right or wrong password.
It started working unexpectedly for a little while. I experimented with some settings. Now I can't access it again. The Airport Admin Utility sees the Airport as 10.0.0.0, my laptop's IP says 169.xx.whatever. I thought the Airport was supposed to distribute IP addressed. It did for awhile after I set it that way, but then it went back to 169.xx.whatever.
I'm lost. I don't know how I will ever access the Airport again. Or get my printing capability back.
    Help!!!

Ok. I'm going to try a reset on a day where I have some time to mess with it. There are some things I need clarified for me about settings. Please correct me as needed.
    In the internet tab:
    -Connect using Ethernet is selected.
-Configure Manually was selected before as it is now.
-IP address: do I use their IP or 10.0.0.0 or 10.0.1.1 or what?
-Subnet mask: It used to be 255.255.255.0 now it's 255.255.0.0.
-Router address: What do I put here, use their IP or 10.0.0.0 or 10.0.1.1 or what?
-DNS servers: I will enter their DNS servers.
    -Domain name: blank
-WAN Ethernet Port is selected Automatic.
    Under Network Tab:
    -Distribute IP adresses is checked.
-Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT)used to be checked, now Share a rnage of IP addresses (using only DHCP) is checked.
-DHCP Lease: 4 hours. What is best here?
Do I really need to worry about anything else? If the password is reset how to I access from default settings?
Thanks, after this I should have a better understanding of network settings and the AEBS.
    J-

  • Airport Admin Utility, iTunes, Airfoil can't see AE base station

I know this is not a new topic, but I can't find an answer in any of the other threads. With other users the problem seemed to "magically" go away. I have not been so lucky yet.
Airport Admin Utility can't see my AE base station but I can find it using "other" and typing in the IP address. I was able to update the firmware to 6.3 (again using "other" and typing in the IP address since the fw updater couldn't see it either). I can see it (with it's name displayed) with my router software. However, it does not show up in iTunes or Airfoil either.
The base station is connected via ethernet to my home network. I tried rebooting the computer, restarting the base station, I also tried a hard reset on the base. I do not have "distribute ip address" checked. I do have "enable Airtunes" checked. The firmware on my Linksys router is up-to-date and not a hack. I'm running OS X v10.4.5 on a Dual 1.42 GHz PowerMac G4.
    Thanks in advance.
    Dual 1.42 GHz PPC G4, 1.42GHz Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

okay, I connected the AE base directly to the PowerMac with the ethernet cable and it showed up in everything (Airport Admin Utility and iTunes). So I guess my problem is with the router. What do I do now? This router is only a couple of months old.
When you suggested I disable DHCP, did you mean in the AE settings or on my router? As I mentioned initially, I do not have "distribute ip addresses" set up on the AE base. After reconnecting the AE base to the router, I tried disabling DHCP on the router and that didn't fix the problem.

  • Airport Admin Utility Error

I just bought a new G5 with the new Airport Extreme and upgraded to OS X 10.4.9 because I was getting a "Configuration" error when running the Airport Admin Utility. The error reads "Configuration Error, This version of Airport Admin Utility does not support this base station." I went the the apple support site and downloaded an update to the airport extreme software.
The problem was not solved. While I can connectivity through ethernet on one machine, the airport's light is flashing amber and I have no wireless connectivity. Could anyone help me with this? Thanks

Airport Utility is for the new Airport Extreme although one can use it to setup an Express to a point.
The Airport Admin Utility does not work with the new Extreme router.
When you install the Airport software from the CD you received when you bought the router it does not overwrite the older Airport software.

  • Airport Express flashing amber, but shows normal in airport admin utility

I just replaced a Microsoft wireless router with an Airport Extreme base station. I've had 2 airport express stations on the old wireless network working fine with solid green lights - 1 streams airtunes and the other is a print server. I installed the extreme base station and now the 2 airport express stations appear as normal / working in the airport admin utility but have flashing amber lights. the print server actually works - I can print. The airtunes streams, but it cuts out every 5-10 seconds. Can't figure out how to get rid of the flashing amber and can't find the error since the airport admin shows them as green and working normal.
    Any ideas??

Hi ...... I am having the same problem but am having difficulties finding out why.
How did you solve it ?
    Many thanks in advance

  • Airport Admin Utility Error 6753

Trying to add original Airport Express (for iTunes) to Windows wireless network based on a Belkin G54 router but after inputing router IP address and password in Airport Admin Utility I get the Error 6753 and flashing amber when the program tries to read router. Running Windows VISTA and Live OneCare. I've tried resetting, uninstalling OneCare, and newer Airport Utility but same result. Would appreciate any help with this.

Airport Utility is for the new Airport Extreme although one can use it to setup an Express to a point.
The Airport Admin Utility does not work with the new Extreme router.
When you install the Airport software from the CD you received when you bought the router it does not overwrite the older Airport software.

  • Airport express not listed in Airport admin utility, no music

I had my stereo connected to my airport express to stream music from my imac.
Its been working great for a year. About 2 days ago I did some updates and now
the light is blinking orange and no music.
I have tried to reset the AE with a paperclip but its still not showing in the Airport Admin Utility NOR the Airport Setup Assistant.
Not sure where to go from here....
    thanks Laura Drew

When I open the Airport Admin Utility, even when the AX is connected via ethernet, it is still not listed there. I hit rescan and it never surfaces. If I hit OTHER I get a screen that says 10.0.0.1 (if I remember correctly) then I put in the pw public.
10.0.0.1 would be the correct default LAN IP address for the AirPort Base Stations.
The screen says its rebooting the AX. The light turns green for apx. 2 seconds then turns back to blinking orange.
If I unplug it from the ethernet, I am able to see it under the airport icon.
And this would be normal when the AX is not connected to a network. I have assumed that your are using a Cable/DSL modem for your Internet connectivity and that you had not replaced the Ethernet cable between the modem and the AX just yet. So a blinking amber (orange) status light would be correct.
I choose it, plug the AX into the stereo but the light never turns green, and itunes says it can't find the AX.
Connecting the AX to a stereo would not change the status light. Again, remember a green status light indicates a valid network connection.
Maybe I will need to do it thru my router?? could my airport card have gone bad? but it seems I can connect to other networks (my neighbors)??
You can certainly set up the AX while it's connected to a router. I agree with you that it shouldn't be a problem with your AirPort Card.
So now I have to admit, I'm a bit baffled about your current network configuration. My confusion is, whether or not, you are using an Internet router, in addition to the AX.
Would you please confirm for me which of the following two network configurations, 1 or 2, that you currently desire...
    1) DSL/Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > [WAN port] Internet router [LAN port] > (Ethernet cable) > [Ethernet port] AX [Audio port] > (audio cable) > stereo, or
    2) DSL/Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > [Ethernet port] AX [Audio port] > (audio cable) > stereo
    ...or something else?
In other words, are you using the AX for both your Internet connectivity/iTunes streaming or another router for the Internet and just using the AX for streaming iTunes?

  • Airport Express disappears from Airport Admin Utility

If I power cycle my Airport Express, it correctly finds my (non-Airport) wireless network and its light turns green. It successfully works with Airtunes, and also works as a wireless bridge to my TiVo. However, after a period of time (usually a few hours), it starts flashing orange, and can't be found by either Airport Admin Utility or iTunes. However, it still successfully bridges the TiVo to my wireless router. Does anyone have any clue what's going on? If I power cycle it again, it goes back to green for a while, but it seems it can't refresh part of the connection without a power cycle.
I should also add that when I first set it up I had major Airtunes dropouts, but then I changed from WPA2 to WPA on my network, and that seems to have helped.

Perhaps when you switch it to 5 GHz the signal loss is so great that your Mac Pro can no longer receive the signal.
5 GHz signals do not move through physical objects as well as 2.4 GHz signals.

  • Configuration error -- airport admin utility

I'm stuck and hoping someone here might be able to help me. I have a new AirPort Extreme 802.11n and when I open the airport admin utility, a "Configuration Error" message appears telling me that "This version of Airport Admin Utility does not support this base station..."
What's worse is that there is only a "Continue" button, and it does not work (i.e. does not do anything, including dismiss the message box).
I installed the software that came with the router, but I get this error on both my MBP and my iMac.
I've tried selecting the check box that says "No longer warn me for this base station", but I am still unable to dismiss this message. The fact that this message won't go away means I can't access the panel behind it to actually configure the router. The message is not modal but also not draggable, so although I can access some fields, I can't access the fields directly underneath the message.
This is so frustrating -- please help!

    Hi James,
The installation disk that came with your AE installed two programs to your Utilities folder. One is Airport Utility. The other is Airport Disk Utility.
The Airport Administration Utility was already on your machine, and that only works with previous Airports. Go back again and click to open Airport Utility and you should be fine.

  • Airport Admin Utillity 4.2 problems

I have a small wired and wireless network: iMac G5, iMac G3, and iBook G3. The iBook uses a wireless connection through Airport Extreme. I also have a couple of AIrport Expresses for sending iTunes music to stereos. Everything has been working fine except I just noticed that I did not have stereo speaker option in iTunes when using iMac G5 running 10.4.6. I opened Airport Admin Utility 4.2 and could not see of the devices.
The strange thing is that the iBook still has a connection and the iMac G3 can see all three devices just fine. The only computer having a problem is the iMac G5. If I manually select "Other" and enter IP address and password for Airport Extreme, it will open configuration file where I can see settings and even restart it. But, when I close everything, I still cannot see it on the device list.
Any ideas or suggestioons as to the problem?

Found problem. My Linksys 1-port cable router died recently and I replaced it with a 4 port model. I plugged-in my computers, printer into the old 8 port switch that I had used previously, except for the cable from Airport Extreme. For some reason I plugged it into one of the 4 ports of the cable router.
Not sure why there is a difference, but once I put it back into the switch, the iMac G5 and Airport Admin Utililty could see Airport and Expresses just fine. Hope thi helps others.

  • Reissue:  Connection Timed Out and Airport Admin Utility Issues

I put this post last November, but no one seemed to have a solution to it, so I thought I would try again...
Our lab has and Airport Extreme (802.11g). Intermittently (once a week to a couple of times a day) our airport extreme will stop allowing new connections. Here's what appears to happen. The airport still appears in the the list of networks in the airport icon in the menu bar (ie it still broadcasts SSID), but when I try to connect it whirls for a while and then says connection timed out. If I go to the Airport Admin Utility the base station doesn't appear there even though all of the rest of the ones on our network do (I should at this point, mention that we have both ethernet and WiFi layers on our network--the base station operates as an access point in bridge mode). The only solution is to power cycle the base station. A couple of extra tidbits.
    * Base station firmware is current at version 5.7.
    * We never have more than about 8 users connected to the base station.
    * This inability to connect is independent of what computer is trying to connect and even occurs with iPod touches.
    * This problem has occurred for a couple of years (multiple firmware versions).
    * I also have similar problems on a network at home that has the new Airport express/extreme N arrangement on a cable internet connection.
    * Sometimes this seems to fix itself after 30 minutes or so of just ignoring it. Other times it does not.
    * The restoration of the ability of the airport to accept connections after the power cycle is always immediate.
    * We only have 6-10 connections, less than the max supported.
    * The Airport usually continues to work for those computers that are connected to it before it stops allowing connections.
    So couple of questions:
    1) Do other people see this problem?
    2) Is this some problem with the WAN network connection impairing the ability of the base station to establish WiFi connection that eventually resets itself after something times our or resets?
    3) Any suggestions as to what to do about it?

Two reasons I don't think that this is likely the issue. Both are based on my assumptions about how noise would affect the working of a WAP. If these assumptions are erroneous, please let me know.
The first is that I have tried both automatic channel selection and manual channel assignment based on an unused channel that was several channels away from other WAPs. Kind of circumstantial since other devices can emit noise in the same region of the spectrum (our phones are 5.8GHz and the microwave is no where near the base station.
The second though, is that I can stand literally a foot away from the base station with my notebook or iPod touch and still have the same problem. It would seem the the noise would have to be enormous to interfere with a device that close the the base station. Also, why would the other connected devices continue to work?
In the interest of providing a complete picture, I would say I have thought quite a lot about whether noise is a problem. This base station is installed in a lab, with lots of electrical equipment whirring away and to make matters worse, the base station itself needed to be installed right next to (Within inches) a circuit breaker box. I winced when I did this.
Interestingly, the thing normally does work and the signal strength & signal to noise (reported by airport utility) and transfer rates are quite good when you can connect.
    Thanks,
    Michael
