Airport, Airport and iPhone

Hi,
I'm struggling with setting up my home network. Basically, I have two Airport Express (one connected to my router, the other in the next room to stream iTunes to external speakers), an Apple TV, a MacBook, a Sony Vaio notebook, and an iPhone. Ideally, all would support 802.11n, but the iPhone and the Vaio doesn't.
Right now I have the entire network at b/g speed, because otherwise iPhone and Vaio can't get on, but my hope is that there is a possibility to increase the speed of parts of the network to n. Is it possible to have...
- the router connected to the first Airport Express, and have this one working at n-speed to stream fast to the Apple TV and have a fast connection for the MacBook, and have
- the other Airport Express not be physically connected to the router, but to "extend the range" to allow connecting the iPhone and the Vaio at b/g?
I'm getting a little confused here... help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Philipp

I had the same problem when I first got the iPhone... for whatever reason, it wouldn't connect to the Airport Extreme-created Wifi network I had at home. So, I fiddled with the WiFi access settings in the "Settings" window on the iPhone.
In Settings, go into the "WiFi" area, right below the Airplane Mode option.
Once in WifI, choose the network you're trying to get on.
You should be able to now change the security format of the password. I found that even though I did have a WEP password for the Airport Extreme, the only way I could connect to the network was by changing the security to the "WEP hex or ASCII" option.
Once I did that, I tried my network password again, and it worked.
See if this works for you.

  • New Airport Extreme and iPhone Issues

I've had the networking day from ****. I previously had a 3rd Gen Time Capsule at our restaurant, connected to a Cisco 26port gigabit POE switch and Comcast digital voice and internet. Over the past few days, employees have reported trouble accessing the the Wifi network. After several restarts and firmware upgrades (including the dreaded "firmware problem" to fine update), nothing worked. I changed channels, back to auto, back to specific channels, back to auto. Made open guest networks. Nothing worked consistently. My iPhone might connect and my friend's might not. Nor his laptop consistently. Our Axis network cameras might take a bit extra time to connect. All quite random and quite frustrating.
So I swap out an older Airport Extreme (4th gen I believe) using the same configuration as the TC (Time Capsule). It works fine, except for the last port not working as expected. No matter, I plug the mac mini into the Cisco switch and off we go. Nevertheless, I'm still told we are suffering random Wifi issues. So I buy a brand new AE (5th gen) today to replace that one. Should work like a charm I thought. Right....
Several hours later, I finally have the new AE working, but only after doing several hard resets/factory restores, the works. For some reason, the mac mini could not successfully update any of the connected AEs - whether connected directly into the same AE, or if the Mini was connected to the switch. Nothing worked. Every time I tried to update the AE, it would hang and force me to unplug and plug it back in. It would also never save setting changes. I finally resorted to a friend's macbook to be able to restore it successfully. And once that worked, the mini was able to update the AE flawlessly. Our Point of Sales (POS) machines connect fine, our cameras connect fine, wifi printer connects, and the mini connects, and everything has internet.
Except my iPhone 5. Of course. It gets a signal fine (full bars). It gets an IP address. But I can't surf the web. Or download email. Or iMessages. Anything. No internet access. I try hard restarts on my iphone. I try assigning IP addresses by MAC address. I try resetting the AE. I try renaming the WiFi name. Nothing. I can make a guest network that works (on a different IP table, btw - 172, not 192.) But other than that, no access. Grrrr.
So I have a "working" AE router where some devices successfully connect (through wifi and ethernet) and some dont' (wifi iPhone). My iPhone connects fine to my home TC. So shouldn't be anything to do with that. But I'm at a loss. I'm going to go back and restore everything and power cycle everything tonight or tomorrow night. I don't know if that will help, but it's worth a try. Lord knows it feels like I've tried everything else.
Anyone have any good ideas of where to start besides voodoo dolls and baseball bats?

I took mine back, because I was having these very same issues. We use contivity too. I was able to connect only to one of three of the servers we manage (in Europe). I couldn't connect to the servers in Asia or here in the USA.
Replaced the Airport Extreme with my trusty old d-link 624, and no issues connecting to any of the three hubs.
Otherwise, I liked the Airport Extreme, and I'll consider buying it again when and if they address this VPN issue. I work at home so its obviously a "deal breaker" for me.

  • Airport Express and iPhones can't see network-macs and ipad can?

I have an Airport Extreme base station connected to a comcast modem, with 2 express units for airtunes.
After some fiddling around due to the comcast outage, now I can't see either of the Airport Express units in the Airport Utility, AND neither my or my wife's iPhone can see the network. The iPad, iMac, Macbook and a PC can all connect no problem. My phone connects to wifi at work no problem.
    Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Your settings should look like this:
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
wireless Network Name = Name of your wireless network
Check mark not needed next to Allow this Network to be extended
    Radio Mode = Automatic
    Radio Channel = Automatic
    Wireless Security = WPA2 Personal
Wireless Password = Backspace and retype your password here
Confirm Password = Backspace and retype your password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
If you have a simple modem (only one ethernet port), the setting for Connection Sharing should be set to Share a public IP address
If you have a gateway (combination modem and router with 3-4 ethernet ports), the setting for Connection Sharing should be set to Off (Bridge Mode).
    Update to save changes
    Restart all other devices
    Any luck?

  • Airport Express and Iphone Remote Application

I have G5 Power PC using 10.5 software. I have Airport Express that allows me to play my ITunes library remotely through my home sound system. I had downloaded and used the Remote application for the IPhone and it had worked well until I recently added Time Machine for backup and to set up a Home WIFI network using my cable modem connection.
Now I am no longer able to use the Remote App on my Iphone.
I choose the Airport Extreme network and when Remote attempts to connect to my Music Library, a receive the following:
Remote could not connect to your library. If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer, make sure the firewall is not blocking communication with Remote.
I am not sure where I would go to be able to see if communication is blocked.

    Thanks for your reply.
Well. I am not using the Airport Express as a modem, but as a node for streaming music (and with lan to wan etherbridge function (proxy STA)). Very easy to notify when it does not communicate, -no music.
I have a zyxzel modem at root to my Internet provider.
I like to know the background info for this settings.
I read about the multicast problem, and therefore enabled the filtering.
I will try these settings you suggested, but is there a reason for those settings, the Th. at 2304 and the B.I. at 75?
It could take some time to see, if these settings ajustments have any effect for my problem, but I will notify any changes.

  • Airport Express and iphone

I got Airport Express for Xmas and hooked up. The Admin Utility and set is on my iMac. My son has a laptop and I have an iPhone. I noticed when the imac is off, I can't get wi-fi on my iphone. I have really bad reception in the house and thought airport would solve it.
Does my imac have to be on 24/7 for iphone to get wi-fi? It never occurred to me I had to leave computer on. O

I checked my settings and under Sharing>Internet, sharing is off. Should it be on?
Only if you want to enable Internet Sharing on your iMac. Again, this feature reconfigures the iMac to perform as a software router. This would normally be used if you didn't already employ a hardware router on your network.
I assumed that in your current network configuration, the AXn was directly connected to your Internet modem by Ethernet ... is this not the case?

  • Can someone explain AirPort Express and iPhone interaction?

Is it possible to use the iPhone along with an Airport Express? Is there any interaction between these devices? For example can I use the iPhone to control music playback through the Airport Express?
    thanks.

    Nathan,
Thank you for your reply but can you please provide more details? I'm really confused over Airport Extreme vs. Airport Express vs. Air Tunes and how this all interfaces with the iPhone. Can you please explain these devices? I also saw a post from someone stating they could control wireless music playback via their iPhone, how is this possible?
Edit: See the post by Mike Kelley at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1159025
How is he doing this? Is he using Airport Extreme or Airport Express or Air Tunes?

  • Curious about Wifi signal reported by AirPort Utility and iPhone

I have an airport extreme (the non-gigabit version) and am running a MBP and an iPhone over the wireless, as well as some hardwired equipment. I was troubleshooting something else and clicked on the wireless clients portion of the utility and had a question about the signal the utility reported.
It shows some negative numbers for the MBP for signal (-36) and noise (-96), and a rate of 130 (it is running n-based) and the iPhone is reporting (49) signal (0) noise and (27) rate.
So can someone tell me what those numbers mean? I am wondering if I changed my setup I could get the iPhone's speed improved, or if that is as good as it's goign to get.

I'm not sure why different utilities report signal & noise values differently, but typically they are reported as negative numbers.
To make some sense out of this, you need to understand that what is really important is the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and how these numbers are used to calculate it.
SNR is the signal level (in dBm) minus the noise level (in dBm). In your example, a signal level of -36dBm and a noise level of -96dBm yields a SNR of 60dB, an excellent value for wireless LANs.
The SNR, as measured from your MacBook Pro, decreases as the range to the base station increases because of applicable free space loss. Also an increase in RF interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones, which increases the noise level, also decreases SNR.
    SNR Guideline
    o 40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
    o 25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    o 15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
    o 10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    o 5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
Any location, where the SNR is 20dB+, you should be getting reasonable performance from your AirPort.

  • Airport express causes iphone and ipad to lose wifi

We have a new (3 months old) Airport Extreme in our house.  It provides internet connectivity for an iMac, macbook pro, iphone 3gs, and ipad 2 (and a pc).  Never had any problems.
Two days ago, I purchased an Airport Express to put downstairs, and wirelessly extend the wifi network.  Setup seemed to go smoothly, and all devices reported a stronger signal downstairs.  However, the iphone and ipad started behaving really strangely after an hour or so.  They kepy saying they couldn't connect to the network, and even when I selected the network, they kepy saying the password was incorrect (even though I typed it in 10 times).  I reset the network settings on the iphone, as well as powered it off and rebooted it to no avail. The only way I have been able to get things working again is to unplug the airport express; restore the airport extreme to its factory settings, and then re-set-up the network on the airport extreme from scratch.
After things were working again, I re-installed the Airport Express and configured it to wirelessly extend the network.  Same thing happened: everything was fine for an hour or so, and then the iphone and ipad lost wifi connectivity and wouldn't re-connect. Only way to fix it was again to unplug the airport express and wipe the airport extreme back to factory settings and rebuild the network from scratch.
Is anyone else having this issue?  I'd really love to use the Airport Express for its advertised functions of extending my wifi network (and streaming itunes on my stereo downstairs)-- but if it garbles or kills the ability for my iphone and ipad to use Wifi, that's unacceptable and it will be going back to the Apple store.
I should mention that as far as I am aware, I have the latest versions of ios running on the iphone and ipad, and the latest firmware updates for the airport extreme and airport express.
Has anyone dealt with this problem?
    Many thanks.

Problem solved, found Ninja10's post and was able to fix this problem. Thanks Ninja10!

Problem solved.  I was recommended by a non Apple consultant to manually change the radio channel.  Channel 11 worked.

  • I have an Ipad and Iphone but I don't have an Airprint, only a WIFI printer,my question is if I connect the wifi printer to Airport express, can I print from Ipad and Iphone ?

I have an Ipad and Iphone but I don't have an Airprint at home but only a WIFI printer, my question is if I connect the wifi printer to Airport express, can I print from Ipad and Iphone ? Please help me if anyone knows about this.

Unfortunately, connecting a non-AirPrint-enabled printer to an AirPort base station's USB port will not make it AirPrint-ready.
You will need to use another solution, like Printopia, to be able to print to this printer from an iOS device.

  • If I use my Airport Express to establish a network printer can I print from my IPad and iPhone?

I want to be able to print to a network printer with my IPad and IPhone with IOS 5.0.1.  Seems like there is a limited number of printers that can "AirPlay" from these devices.  I have an Airport Express and I know how to connect a printer and set it up as a network printer, my question is can I wirelessly print from my Ipad and iPhone then.  Seems too easy for what appears to be a limited set of new printers that have that have Thai function built in.

Printopia allows me to print from an iPad2 to any printer that is connected to the USB port of my AriPort Extreme.
You might want to check it out here:

I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work? And one more thing about the setup, the linksys router shich acts as a base is in a different room as the airport express which i wanted to use for airplay. So I'm hoping to hook up the Airport express via wireless signal. If i can set it up, can someone pls help me out by posting detailed instructions. Thanks so much!

The first message that AirPort Utility will display during the auto setup will be that the Express will be confgured to "extend" the network. When AirPort Utility analyzes the network further, and sees that the Express cannot "extend" the 3rd party network, the next message will indicate that the Express is being configured to "join" the wireless network.
Once the Express is configured, if you later go into AirPort Utility to check the settings under the Wireless tab, you will see that the Wireless Mode is indeed "Join a wireless network".

  • I was told at the Apple store that I could simply plug in ( electric power) the Airport Express and it would find my wireless network. I hoped to use it as a way to play music from my iphone. I do not use other Apple routers etc,

The Airport Express is not finding my wireless network. I do not have any of the devices listed below. I have a Belkin wireless router. Can I still use Airport Express ( without plugging an ethernet cable into it) ? Any ideas for how to make it find my network ? It is sitting next to the wireless router-so is in range.
If you already have a wireless network in your home and want to extend its range, AirPort Express can help. Just place it in range of your primary base station — an AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule, or another AirPort Express — and near the area where you want your wireless connection. Launch the easy-to-use AirPort Utility app on your iOS device or Mac, and you’re mere minutes away from long-range Wi-Fi enjoyment.

Hi - you can do what you want to do with AirPlay from your iPhone - but unfortunately it is not as easy as the people in the Apple store told you - your first problem is that you have a non Apple router - you cannot extend a non Apple router wirelessly with the Express - you can only join the network and connect an ethernet device to it - you can however connect via ethernet and have it create a wireless network of its' own - you can set this up from your iPhone or the XP - but this is a complicated setup and would involve many different discussion areas of this forum - therefore I would suggest that you use your 90 days of support and consult directly with Apple to do this - go to this link - http://www.apple.com/support/contact/

  • Airport Extreme - Macbook Pro and iPhone can connect, XP laptop/Macbook

This afternoon I switched from Embarq DSL to Comcast. My Airport Extreme is connected to my new cable modem. We tested the Internet connection, both wirelessly and via Ethernet, with my Macbook Pro before the tech left. We also tested the MBP connected directly to the cable modem. Everything worked just fine.
However, after he left I found that my XP laptop cannot connect to the Internet, and neither can our Macbook. Both appear to be getting local (10.X.X.X) IP addresses and both get a strong signal from the Airport Extreme, but no Web, no IM,no pinging, no nothing. No 404 errors, just lots of waiting - like 2-3 minutes - then the Safari message that I'm not connected to the Internet. Ditto when connected via Ethernet.
Strangely, my iPhone is able to get on the Web via the Airport no problem.
I've power cycled all the machines, the Airport Extreme, and the cable modem, tried every manual setup option I can think of, and set it up on automatic via Airport Utility, and always the results are the same. I've been at it for hours.
Has anyone seen this happen? Any idea of how to fix it?

If the last computer you had connected was the MBP, then you will have to reset the cable modem. It remembers the IP address of the last connected computer. If the AEBS is now connected, the cable modem will not see it. Same thing happened to me. Once you've reset, reconnect the AEBS and it should work.
