Airport AND etherneth HUB...

Hi again!
I have a weird network config, I admit that... but i see no reason why it shouldn't work as I intended.
Let me explain: I got my ADSL modem connected to a hub, and a g4 iMac connected to the same hub... this hub is then connected to my airport, to the WAN port, and spreads internet connection (PPPoE) throughout the air to my Macbook, but the iMac cannot see the airport! it won't get an IP, and manual IP configuration is useless either... so I tried to connect the mac straight to another ethernet door of my Base, and it worked fine.
Unfortunately, becouse of a weird situation, I have my modem and iMac in the same room, while the airport is on the other side of the house, and only 1 ethernet cable can fit in the walls....
Is there any way to config everything to work with just one cable between the hub and the airport?
Strangely, when my Airport base is connected to the net, my iMac can still connect throug indipendend PPPoE, even if the modem should handle just one connection, but the matter is that i can't connect the macbook to the iMac, and can't share with the iMac the USB drive connected to the base...
any ideas??
thanks in advance

Is this device actually an Ethernet hub or an Ethernet switch? A hub will basically re-broadcast anything it receives to each of it's ports at the same time. It doesn't "know" what's connected to it. On the other hand, a switch is a "smart" hub. It does know the devices that are connected to it and passes on traffic to the correct port which that device is connected to.
If you are using a hub, whatever is sent from the ADSL modem will go out each of the hub's ports. That would mean a devices connected to the hub would get the same data at basically the same time, and most likely, why your computers are not seeing each other.
A better configuration would be to attach the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) directly to the ADSL modem using an Ethernet connection from the AEBSn's WAN port, and then provide both wired and wireless access to your devices. In this configuration, you wouldn't need the hub and all devices should be able to communicate with each other.

I can't print wirelessly using Airport Express.  I have my HP printer connected to a USB hub, and the hub to the Airport Express, but when I select the HP from the printer list, my MacBook says the printer is "off-line" - even when it is not.  I've tried several USB connectors, and several different ports on my USB hub; same result.  I need to have the HP connected to the hub 'cause from there it's connected to our desktop Mac.

  • Internet via airport and other computer via ethernet and hub

    Is this possible?
    Network 1:
I have a macbookpro. I connect to the 'net via airport and a wireless router-modem. I use dhcp with manual address (192.168.1.5, because we have numerous computers here). All's sweet.
    Network 2:
I need to work on a linux box which doesn't have wireless. It's a pain to connect it to the wireless router directly (although this does work), so I have an ethernet cable and hub and cable to connect it to the mbp directly. I configure ipv4 manually and can telnet etc to the linux box (which has its own ipaddress specified already) IF the airport is disconnected.
But I want to run both at the same time. I know I can work on the linux box and surf at the same time IF I connect the linux box to the router (by ethernet cable). But what if I want to have the wireless and ethernet on my mbp together?
Do I need to specify different ip addresses on my mbp for the ethernet and wireless? I've set it both ways and it doesn't seem to work with them either the same or different. If I go to Network Port Configurations (in Network) and move "Airport" to the top, I can surf but not telnet to the linux box. If I have Ethernet higher in the list, I can telnet but not surf. This is the case whether the ip addresses are the same or different.
Is it possible to do what I want, or just not possible?
    No I don't have a crossover cable.

Realised that I needed two networks with different ids.

  • Home Wifi Network Issue using Airport and 2 BT Hub...

I'm having problems getting my home network set up without IP conflicts.  Any advice much appreciated...
    Here's what I've currently got:
    BT Broadband Unlimted
Hub 2.0 connected to broadband line - wireless network switched off
Apple Airport Time Capsule connected to Hub 2.0 by WAN cable (Airport running in Bridge mode)
Various Apple devices (MBP, iMac, iPhones, iPads, iPod), PS3 and Sony Surround Sound connected to Airport with wifi.
Wifi extender connected to Airport by wifi (obviously) for upstairs - PS3 and occassionally MBP connected to that)
Ethernet cable from Airport to a Hub 1.5 in the Garden Office with MBP and HP Printer then connected to Hub 1.5 with wifi.
HDD connected to Airport with USB cable.
Everything was working fine until I ran the ethernet cable to the office and connected the Hub 1.5.  It worked fine in the office, wifi connected, I could see the internet and the Airport and the connected HDD.
However, at this point, the iMac back in the house, which connects to the Airport wifi network, sometimes connects to the internet, sometimes doesn't.  It connected to the Wifi fine, just won't connect to the Internet. It was stopping at the Hub2.0 "Default Gateway" (according to traceroute).  Switching wifi networks on the iMac (e.g. Airport 2.5Ghz to Airport 5GHz, or Airport to FON or Airport to the Office Wifi) fixes the internet connection problem, until next time I try to connect.
This only affects the iMac.  The MBPs, iPhones etc have no problems connecting to wither wifi or the Internet...
I figured it must be an IP addressing problem due to the Hub1.5 conflicting with the IP address range configured for the Hub2.0, so I tried to re-configure this on the Hub1.5 in the Office.
However, to get to the Hub Manager, I had to disconnect the Ehternet cable (otherwise it just went to the Hub2.0 Hub Manager).  Once I did this and reset the Hub1.5 to factory settings, I could see the Hub1.5 Manager.  However, if I click on Advanced and enter the password (after restting it with the SN) I can't see any of the advances menu options in the left hand panel (e.g. IP Addresses).  So I can't change the IP address range.
Any ideas how I can get to see the IP Address options on the Hub1.5?
I also tried setting a static IP address on the iMAC, but it won't let me - just says IP address already in use when I try to change it to one in the range set on the Hub2.
Worse thing is, now that I've reset the Hub1.5, the Internet connection keeps dropping on that as well now.  It works fine for a few minutes then drops and I have to turn wifi off and on again, or disconnect and reconnect the ethernet cable to get the Internet to connect again, then it drops after a few minutes.
So, I've gone from the iMac not working to the iMac and the office hub1.5 not working properly, and all I've really done is reset the hub1.5 to factory settings...
Shall I just get rid of the 1.5 and buy a different wifi router for the office?
Should I be able to change the IP address range on the 1.5?
    Any other ideas?
Any help much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried running the TC not in bridge mode?
In airport utility, instead of selecting bridge mode, select share a public ip address. You will get an advisory warning from the TC but just opt to ignore it.
This way all of the DHCP is handled by the TC and the HH1.5 and none by the HH2.
Otherwise a replacement for the HH1.5 might be called for - perhaps and airport extreme.

  • Using Airport And Ethernet Together

Having read Christopher Breen's solution to using Airport and Ethernet together,
    http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/mac911/2006/10/airportswitch/index.php
I am still wondering if this can apply to my situation. I have an Airport Exteme BS distributing the wireless signal on it's own node. Nothing is physically connected to the BS except an ethernet cable running to a hub which is connected to the cable modem. While my ISP service isn't supplying service faster than Airport will manage, no problem...but, I would like to have the advantage ethernet networking between my machines for all the advantages that ethernet speed can bring to that situation.
My connection to the internet is from WAN from the cable modem. I have an ethernet connection from the BS that I can run a cable back to say, an iBook. Will this work? I want wireless internet, but ethernet for machine to machine networking.

    iBook G3/500 G4/Dual 450 Mac OS X (10.4)
    iBook G3/500 G4/Dual 450 Mac OS X (10.4)

Helpful response, but I am uncertain this is what I am after. First, the hub is at the other end of the house, inconvenient to run a cable to it in this way. Presently, "Distribute IP Addresses" is turned off. This is way it had to be set since the AEBS is on a separate node. I just wonder why I can't run a cable from the AEBS LAN port back to the iBook. Looking for best possible speed when networking from my studio G4 while keeping the wireless internet setting.
Any reason making the config the way I am imagining will not work?

  • Is there a way to create a shared net conn. between Airport and Ethenet?

Is there a way to create a shared internet connection between one airport computer and another via ethernet?
I have one computer (lets call this computer 'A') connected to the net via Airport which connects to a router, which is directly connected to my ADSL line.
However, my other computer (computer 'B') is not located within range of this wireless router.
Is there a way for me to send my internet connection via computer A to computer B, via an Ethernet cable or Airport connection or otherwise?
    ADSL---Wireless Router---(Airport)---Computer A---(Ethernet)---Computer B

Is there a way for me to send my internet connection via computer A to computer B, via an Ethernet cable or Airport connection or otherwise?
Yes, it's called Internet Sharing, and here's how to set it up...
To setup for Internet Sharing (Wireless to Wired):
    Enable Software Firewall (Computer A)
System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall
o Click Stop to start the software firewall
    Setup the Network
ADSL Modem > (Ethernet cable) > (Ethernet port) Wireless Internet Router > (wireless) > (AirPort Card) Computer A (Ethernet port) > (Ethernet cable) > (Ethernet port) Computer B
    Setup Port Order (Computer A)
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
o Verify that "AirPort" and "Built-In Ethernet" are enabled.
o Verify that "AirPort" is at the top of the list, followed by "Built-In Ethernet."
    o Click "Apply Now."
Configure the Internet Connection (Computer A)
    System Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort > TCP/IP
    o Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
o Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
    Enable Internet Sharing (Computer A)
System Preferences > Sharing > Internet
o Share your connection from: AirPort
o To computers using: Built-In Ethernet (checked) (Note: Uncheck all other entries in the list.)
    o Click Start

How do I clean up my new FIOS connection? I just cahnged ISP Fios and they reqquired a router of thier own in front of my AirPort Extreme. Since then I have blinking yellow light on the AirPort and AirPort utility keeps promting for an edit. Suggests canging from NAT to "Bridge mode". Obviuosly U have some internet or this post would not go anywhere, my knowledge base is not enought to feel comfortable with changing the settings. Correctly editing can be tricky, so how do I make necessary changes?

How do I clean up my new FIOS connection?
The FIOS router needs to be in Bridge Mode to prevent the Double NAT error from occurring when two routers are both fighting with each other for control of the network.
Unfortunately, the likely problem from the FIOS side is that FIOS support will either tell you that their router cannot be configured to operate in Bridge Mode, or if it can, they will not tell you how to do it.
But, it could not hurt to check with FIOS to see if anything might have changed recently in this regard, so your first call would be to FIOS support.
If you cannot change the FIOS router to Bridge Mode, the alternate plan would be to change the AirPort Extreme to Bridge Mode. If you are using the Guest Network feature on the AirPort Extreme at this time, that feature will not work correctly when the AirPort is set up in Bridge Mode.

  • Airport and internet sharing turns off by itself

Hi everyone, I have an imac that I purchased earlier this year, and I use internet sharing to get internet for my ipod touch. Until a few months ago, this worked fine but now airport and internet sharing turn off every time I restart the computer and I have to turn both back on every time. Is anyone else experiencing this problem or know hot to fix it?

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Download and install the v10.5.8 combo update available here.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
One of the "fixes" includes: - compatibility and reliability issues when joining AirPort networks.
After the installation, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Late 2005 - Airport and Bluetooth - won't work together

    Hi everybody!
    I have a problem with my Powermac G5 (late2005).
I have the Airport Extreme with Bluetooth 2.0+EDR card installed.
WLAN and Bluetooth work both if operated separately.
But when Airport is activated and running and I turn on Bluetooth (and connect for example my Magic Mouse) Airport breaks down. - I loose my connection and can't see any other wireless networks.
Switching to another Airport channel din't help.
Does anybody have an idea what to do?
    Thanks a lot!
    Chris

    I just started trying BT.
I allready had a look at the cabling and read about it, that it doesnt matter how the calbes are connected to the airport card.
I don't think I can put anything between the antennas.
The late2005 has the build-in antenna (for Airport and BT)...
But I will have a look if I can place anything between an I will change the cabling...
    Thanks so far!

I'm not sure how to post a message. I hope this might interest someone. The situation; 3 floors,I am having trouble with an an Airport Extreme, 802.11n on the top floor and a Mac Pro 3.1 on the bottom floor. Not always but often it has trouble seeing the Airport and making a connection. I have an older Airport Express, would it help to install it? would it work best if it was installed in the same room? should it be installed half way in between? Get another Extreme? The Mac Book Pro on the middle floor can see 11 networks in the neighbourhood if that might be causing a problem or would if I installed the Express. Thank for your consideration.

Thanks for your time ... I appologize for the font and colour, I compossed the question in pages and failed to notice the font colour as grey ... there are a variety of computers of various ages so I think it is using a setting that allows both 5G and 2.4 ... the connection to the Airport is thru a cable modem and cable does run throuhout the house ... maybe those hard wires would be a place to look at ... do you think that putting the 'Express' on the second floor might help ... thanks again ...

  • My apple tv keeps losing internet connection. I'm going from modem to airport and from airport to apple tv. I've replaced the modem and the apple tv and it still does it. Internet to my laptop via the airport wifi is fine and never drops out.

I keep having to restart it every time I want to use it. Sometimes I have to restart it multiple times. The cord goes from the cable modem to the airport and then from the airport to the apple tv. I've replaced the apple TV and I've replaced the modem and the problem persists. I assume it has to be the aiport? But the wifi from the airport works fine.
I tried bypassing the airport and going straight from the modem to the apple tv and it wouldn't work. That makes no sense to me.
I had a friend over to try and figure it out and he couldn't. Any idea what could be the problem??

The Ethernet cable from the modem should be connected to the AirPort's WAN (circle of dots) port and a second Ethernet cable should be connected between the AirPort's LAN (opposing arrows) port and the Ethernet port on the Apple TV. Is this the case?
If so, what is the make & model of the modem that the AirPort is connected to. Also what is the exact model of both the AirPort and the Apple TV?

Here's what I do to reset an AirPort base station:  I unplug it, press in the reset button, then, while continuing to hold in the reset button, I plug it in.  (Yes, doing this can be easier for people with more than two hands!)  I then watch the status light and wait until it flashes rapidly several times.
