Airport and External Display

Greetings,
Today I started using a secondary Display with my Macbook using the miniDvi to Dvi original Apple adaptor. After few minutes (10 max) the airport loses the connection with my wireless router and can not detect any wireless networks. I restored the connection by shutting down the Macbook, removing the adaptor from the Macbook and starting the Macbook. Also I reproduced this problem another two times by doing the whole cycle twice.
Has anyone else noticed this?

The Airport card is located inside the black plastic display hinge cover, and is cabled through one of the hinges to the logic board. If your display hinges were damaged, that cable may have been cut or shorted out. You'll have to investigate that before deciding whether it's worth replacing the card in your crippled MBP.

  • Mid 2010 Macbook Pro sleep and external display problem

I recently upgraded to the new 2010 15 inch core i7 Macbook Pro. The problem i have is that it will not detect an external display (23inch Cinema) after waking from sleep. This happens after using the display to extend the desktop and also when using the Macbook in closed mode.
I've managed to get it to detect the display only after either restarting the Macbook completely or by going into energy saver and switching to dedicated graphics then going back to detect display.
It seems that when on integrated graphics it doesn't register that an external display is connected. If i leave a program open and running that causes the dedicated graphics to kick in then it works ok. If i close all programs, shut the macbook pros lid, computer sleeps and external display shuts off. If i click the mouse to wake with lid closed, apple logo lights, machine starts up few seconds later macbook returns to sleep. If i open the screen the machine wakes as normal but the external monitor doesn't.
Any help is much appreciated as its starting to frustrate me now...
    Many thanks
oh and im running OSX 10.6.3

I thought it was intermittent to begin with until i started looking into it. By leaving programs open, like aperture, before i put the machine to sleep it appears to wake the external monitor up without a problem. If i shut all programs or leave basic things open like safari and mail which don't require the dedicated graphics, then upon wake it wont register an external screen is connected.
Manually detecting displays in settings doesn't work.
Disconnecting and reconnecting mini display port doesn't work.
Turning off power to cinema display and powering back up doesn't work.
To get the display going again its either 1) turn off macbook pro and re-boot or 2) re-start the machine then the display is automatically recognised. Or 3) launch a programme that kicks in dedicated graphics then manually go in and detect displays again..... like magic the display then springs to life.
    No ideas anyone??

  • Different resolutions for Macbook Pro display and External display

Is it possible to have different resolutions for a Macbook Pro and an external display. I prefer to see less but larger on my Macbook Pro whilst seeing more but smaller on my external display. I use the DVI output to connect to an Acer 22in display.
    Thanks in advance

I've actually tried that process and it doesn't work; I still get the same display qualities on both. Perhaps that process might work if one is not mirroring. Maybe there is a compatibility issue between my Macbook Pro and the Acer 223W. I'll persevere, but thanks for your help anyway.

    Hi Ian,
    allow me to chime in:
    You are absolutely correct!
In 'Mirroring Mode' both internal and external display have the same resolution.
Only in 'Extended Mode' you can have different resolutions for both displays.

  • Problem with T400 and External Display....

I have a new T400 (less than 1 month old) with the shared memory Intel Graphics setup and I cannot get it to work with an external display of any kind.
I've tried 2 LCD panels (one widescreen, and one 4:3), 2 analog monitors, and a video projector without any luck.  All of the displays I have tried work fine with my older Lenovo R61.
I've updated to the newest display drivers and tried working with the various settings under Graphics properties in Vista - Single Display (notebook, monitor), Intel Dual Display, Extended Desktop, etc.  The best I got was a cloned image on the larger widescreen LCD panel that appeared for about 1 minute and then stopped.  I recreated this 4 or 5 times, but the image would not stay on the external display.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

go into bios, check your video output option and whether you selected Internal + VGA, i think... i will check for you on my X60s....

  • Laptop Built In Display and External Display not Working

Hi all, I have a HP Envy M6-1158ca, and recently my Built-in display stopped working. I plugged it into an external display via HDMI and it showed no input. It seems as though the laptop is not booting into Windows either, as usually whenever my laptop boots into windows, the fingerprint scanner blinks letting me know I can now sign in using it. I am extremly frustrated with this, and have an unbelieveable amount of stress because this was my only PC. Please respond as soon as possible, it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes.. i think thats what might have damaged it...Notebook should always be completely powered off with the battery out and ac adapter disconnected while  replacing any internal hardware..
Shouldnt be a BIOS problem....but still you can check this link..
    Restoring the BIOS
    Note:
If you have HP Support Assistant installed on the computer(The Blue Question Mark) then open it ==> Complete all pending Updates & Tuneups==> Restart and Check. It may solve your problem

  • MacBook Pro and External Display on full resolution

I want to use only my external 20" cinema display, connected to my MBP. So what I do is connect the display via the DVI cable, close the lid of the notebook, wake it up from the keyboard/mouse (now I have the full resolution of the Cinema Display), open the lid so I can use the keyboard and the trackpad. This is all right with me, but when I restart or after sleep MacBook's display turns on and is set up as primary and the Cinema Display goes to Dual View mode. Is there a way the laptop to remember the external Display as primary, so I don't always have to close the lid, wake up the laptop and open the lid.
For instance, when I've done this for the first time in Windows, I didn't have to do it again. Now every time I log in in Windows, the macbook's display automatically turns off and the Cinema Display gets its full resolution. This is what i want to be done when I boot in Mac OS.

I know both scenarios (OS X/Windows), but I'm pretty sure that there's nothing you can do about it. As long as your internal display is open while waking from sleep or booting up, it will be always on in OS X. I'm only using my external Cinema Display and keep the MBP's lid closed all the time. Of course, I use an external keyboard and mouse as well. You can only choose which display has the menu bar on it, but you can't turn it off without sleeping the Mac. In Windows the ATi/Nvidia drivers take care of your settings, but it won't be applied until you get to the Desktop, so you'll still have the internal display on while booting Windows...

  • How can i connect to a LAN and external display at the same time using the mini-displayport?

    Hi all,
At work i'm connected to the Lan via an adapter and the mini displayport. I want to use my external display at the same time, which use the same mini displayport. Are there any splitters available to use both at the same time? Are there any other alternatives?
    Thanks,

  • T60 2007-FUG ATI X1400 Windows 7 64-bit projector and external display problem

I have Windows 7 64-bit Enterprise on my T60. I have tried to install many different ati drivers, but nothing seems to work. I cant use a projector or external display via VGA port. I heard that if I boot with a projector then it works ok.
I have installed Ati Install Manager and so on. I have uninstalled drivers etc. I have search forums. I installed all updates from Lenovo site. BIOS is up to date. I installed X1400 driver from Windows update site. Driver date is 1.12.2008. I cant update it. Everything else works super.
    What to do?

Looking at the ATI drivers on the T60 support site, I do not see one that supports Win7....don't know if there is a plan to.
You probably have basic functionality with the Vista driver, but I would not imagine that all options will be available.
If you cannot get the external VGA port to work through the Catalyst Control Center, then I would would chalk it up to a lack of Win7 support.

  • IMac cannot handle Mavericks and external display?

I am a long-time apple-user and long-time user of this wonderful forum. This is, however, the first time I have needed to ask a question of my own having been unable to find an answer on here or elsewhere. In fact, I haven't read of anyone experiencing the issues that I am.
I recently purchased a second hand Apple iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.0 20-Inch (Al) to replace my old white one. I understand that this is the oldest iMac to be able to handle Mavericks, but I have upgraded the RAM to 4GB just to be safe. I also bought myself a lovely HP W2207H Monitor that is HDMI input and, when on Snow Leopard before my upgrade yesterday, was a beautiful extended desktop with no issues whatsoever.
Since upgrading to Mavericks, the monitor has not been working properly; but it's not any of the other, well-documented issues that I have read already. The monitor doesn't flicker, it is recognized beautifully and the resolution is spot on the native...
Right now, for instance, the monitor is working fine. However, if I was to open a new Firefox tab, or open a new application on my iMac, the monitor would go black (not to sleep or shutting down as the light remains on) for two seconds or so. It seems as if the iMac is struggling with doing something and therefore cuts the monitor feed whilst it's doing the process I have just requested. Furthermore, the iMac's fans are running quite hard despite activity monitor showing the decreased usage as Mavericks promised!
For your information: Apple iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.0GHz 20-Inch (Al) 4GB RAM connected to HP W2207H by Mini-SP to HDMI adaptor and HDMI Cable.
I wonder if anyone could help me solve this problem on Mavericks, or will I simply need to regrade down to Snow Leopard for optimal performance of the external display?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Mike

  • My led and external display flicker a lot. What to do?

I have a late 2011 MacBook or 15". My MacBook screen/display flickers excessively making the mac completely unusable. I am not sure if flickering is the right term. Some times it flickers and some times turns turs completely blue or black with white horizontal lines on it. This happens once a week and I have to reboot more than 20 times to get this solved.
Same thing happens to my external display monitor which is connected via thunderbolt cable. So this makes it clear that the LED of my Mac is not damaged. I have searched a lot on the forums but couldn't find a solution. If somebody could help me I shall be grateful.

  • PB and external display

I am using my PB with an external monitor (Dell FWP 2005) and it works fine, as I close the lid, and have an external mouse and keyboard that I use. My only problem that I can't use my computer with the external display when my power adaptor is not plugged into my PB. Is there anything I can do to fix this, or is this just the way it is?

I believe that's just the way it is. Driving the external monitor is a greater drain on the battery, perhaps. Or maybe it's a logical thing: if you're using an external monitor, it's on a desk and it's near a power supply. I've heard of those who have been able to do this.

  • Leopard dock and external display

recently, i've switched the dock position from bottom to left and i now find that the dock gets positioned to the left edge of the external display when the DVI-VGA adaptor is plugged in and the external display is not mirroring the built-in display. i think that if i could "move" the external to be attached to the right side of the internal, that the dock would stay on the internal, but i haven't found an option to change the position of the external display.
have you experienced this? any solutions? thanks.

    Hello Dan,
Welcome to Apple discussions. It's been a little while since I ran with dual monitors, but is it not achieved by dragging the graphical representation of the monitors around in the Monitors pane of system preferences?
I'm sure you would have checked there already, apologies if so - if not, you can do other changes there like setting the default primary display (the one that shows the menu bar) by dragging the menu bar graphic between screens.

  • Lion and external display

    Hi,
When I wake up my MacBoo Pro usingto work with external display, my laptop gets very hot and I with Snow Leo I was used to open the lid to cool it down.
It worked fine, because the laptop screen was black but with Lion I cannot do it because after opening the laptop lid I am getting immediately cloned desktop on my laptop.
Is it possible to come back to the previous behaviour or somehow to switch-off the laptop screen after opening the lid, still with keeping the external display as active and main one?

    Hi tgr2007
According to Apple support, it is "expected behaviour" under Lion for the MBP's internal display to reactivate upon opening the lid. A new version of the clamshell mode-related knowledgebase article (replacing HT3131) is due shortly confirming this.
    This is despite:
    - the obvious temperature-related benefits that were previously achievable (under Snow Leopard) by opening your MBP lid whilst continuing to output solely to a 27" cinema display
    - the complete and total waste of energy and graphics processing power in running two active screens if running your MBP in clamshell mode would otherwise make it too hot and/or noisy
    - the negative longer-term impact on the battery and other components from running the MBP at any hotter a temperature than it needs to be.
If you would like to have the previous behaviour restored, please join us (ie the many customers who are being adversely affected by this change) in lobbying Apple to change how Lion handles clamshell mode.
Options available to Apple include changing Lion's expected behaviour or adding a user-selectable option within System Preferences.

  • Airport and external HDD

I am new to Mac. Had been on Win PC ever since I used a computer.
If I got a Airport and connected an external HDD as a backup storage to it what way should the HDD be formatted? If in default NTFS can it be still used to read / write from my Mac as well as my wife's Windows laptop?
I also have a Toshiba STOR-E TV with 1TB that I can connect to the wireless / ethernet. Can I write to it from my Mac without any re-formatting or using third party software?
    Thanks in advance

I tried connecting to my STOR.E TV through the LAN. Can read and write to it now.

  • Preview and external displays.

Hey I was wondering if anyone could help me with the following:
    1) I'm using Preview to view pdf-files, when I hookup my external display
and make preview display in fullscreen-mode it uses my laptops screen
to do this. Is there a way to force preview to use the external display?
I've already tried setting my external display as the default display and than
it uses this one for fullscreen, but it would be easier for me not to change these settings each time.
    2) When in fullscreen-mode Preview blacks out the other display. Is there a way to turn this off so that I'm still able to use the other screen will preview stays in fullscreen?
    Thanks in advance!

i've wondered the same thing. for the longest time, when i have my MUCH LARGER display attached to my laptop, i can't seem to find a way to get preview to do full-screen to it.
dragging the window with images (and drawer) to the display before choosing slideshow (fullscreen), it makes no difference.
i'm not expecting there to be a solution. i can only hope that Preview in 10.5 has a preference tab for Slideshow options. It has tabs for other features, why not that one!? its really no difference than presenter mode in keynote or any other program that allows you to select the primary display for certain functions and features. Apple if you read this please add this capability. i also find it frustrating that there is no mention of Preview on Apple's support website for Application support. They have QT, iCal, Font Book, iSync, blah blah blah, but nothing for Preview. I know Preivew is more a component of QT, but it is a stand alone application, so Apple support would be appreciated.
Although i don't care too much about transitions, timing, etc., i can understand that some people would like to be able to control those options. i use Preview to do just that PREVIEW. It would make sense that I should be able to go fullscreen (slideshow) with a set of images in order to PREVIEW them. Having to import to Aperture or iPhoto to have a decent slideshow (fullscreen) mode just isn't good for my workflow.
i'll stop rambling. crossing my fingers.
