Airport and firewire drive

A few days ago the airport signal is grayed out when I am running from my firewire drive. I tryed a different firewire drive and it was the same. Next I tryed a different Powerbook with both drives and it too was the same, grayed out in the menubar. When running from the internal drive on both Powerbooks it works fine. I have also used several different firewire cables. Any ideas as to what is happening?

Printah,
Welcome to discussions.
So are you telling us that you have a version of OSX 10.4 installed on a couple of firewire drives ? And that you sometimes boot from these drives (holding down F at startup) ?
Does the version of OSX installed on the firewire drive include the AirPort software ?
And if it does, does it have it enabled in the Network system preference ?
And if it is, is it used ? ie. Do you still use Ethernet first, if it can establish a network connection ?
And if AirPort is used and preferred, does it have a preferred network to join ?
And if it does, have you retained the password in your Keychain (on that installation of OSX, not the one on your internal drive) ?

I use a firewire card (PC card) on my laptop due to laptop has no

close the lid of the laptop or boot or shut down windows the computer
will freeze and force me to push off button and have to reboot why is

Or if not willing to work what about this?
How can I share my 2 firewire device

Hi, Sherry. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You've posted in the iBook G3 (Dual USB) Discussions area. You may want to try again in the proper _PowerBook Forum_.
I don't think any such thing exists, but someone there may know of something that would work for you.
    Good luck.

  • Time Machine Failure and Firewire Drive Disappears

I have been using Time Machine without any problems with a 1TB external drive connected via USB.  I recently changed to a firewire cable to speed things up, and it works great.  UNTIL... I sporatically get errors where the time machine icon is just spinning and spinning.  When I click on the mounted external backup drive, I get no response.  I cannot eject or get any response from it, or find it in Finder.  If I maunally kill the power on the external, I get an error for disconnecting without ejecting.  When I start it back up, all is fine.  I notice the error when waking up the mac, sometimes after other users have been on with their own accounts.
My guess is that sleep or switching other users somehow interferes with the firewire connected external drive from communicating with the mac?

    Thanks for the help!

Some "Eco" or "green" drives are known for this behavior. The following steps may help:
Select  ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive is connected to a hub, connect it to a built-in port on the computer.
If a firmware update is available for the drive, apply it.
Contact the drive manufacturer to see whether there's a firmware setting you can change.
If you installed vendor software for the drive, uninstall it.
If none of the above steps resolves the issue, try another drive.

  • New aluminum iMac and firewire drive

My school recently placed an order for a lab of iMacs and found out yesterday that we will be getting the new model (20 inch).
We had been using old G4 towers with Final Cut Express and external firewire 400 drives.
Since the new iMac will only have a single firewire 400 port can anyone suggest our best options for capture/playback via firewire 400 and also using our existing firewire 400/USB 2.0 external drives? Is there a firewire 800 to 400 adapter that will allow us to use the faster port as a second 400 port?
Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

I think the adapter for converting FW800 to FW400 is the best option in your case. In my case, my iBook only has one FW400 port and I opted for a Belkin FW Hub to allow capture from my camera to my FW400 external HD. I've heard this is not ideal, but it works for me. Would love to get a new iMac one day.
I believe the reason FW hubs are not recommended is because you can end up splitting the bandwidth. Essentially you might end up with FW200 if two FW400 devices are hooked up to the hub. Anybody else know?

  • Time Machine, Mozy and external drives? Somehow I lost 300GB of data! :(

    Hello:
I have 2 external 500 GB hard drives. One a USB drive used for Time Machine, the other a firewire 800 drive I use for HD video/iMovie files and editing. I also have Mozy (online backup service) installed and running in the background. Not sure what updates I have been running, but about 2 weeks ago I would start getting the spinning color wheel or "spinning beach ball of death" where the mouse pointer/curser would not return. All I could do to recover was hold the iMac power button dow to issue a hard reset. After several occurrences of this event I started yanking my peripheral devices and it seemed to be caused by one if not both external hard drives. 'Cause when I unhooked them, the busy curser went away. Anyway, after this happened for a few days then my external hard drives started randomly un-mounting. Eventually the firewire drive would never remount. WelI, I yank the drive out of the case it was in and put it in another case thinking maybe the external case has gone bad... the strange thing, I could still see the drive in "System Profiler" but it would never mount, even did a PRAM reset. Anyway, I got it in another case, USB only, and it showed up in "Disk Utility" but when I checked it, is said the file structure was bad and couldn't be repaired. So I had to reformat it. Now I'm trying to download 300GB from Mozy because the DVD option from them (Mozy) will cost over $200 (this is what they are charging for the DVD retrieval option)... BTW, the free download retrieval option keeps bombing out on me too, so now I'm not sure I will ever get my files back. Oh well... does anyone have a clue what may have happened here so I don't get in this predicament again... we can start with me not screwing things up but beyond that? Oh, I did hot plug the USB and firewire drives and got warnings about un-mounting first, but with a spinning color wheel I could not do anything like that. Sorry this is partially a vent post. This makes me disappointed in Apple and/or Mozy. This was my first Apple computer purchase and had hoped for something more robust. I can get this same treatment with a PC... at least with a PC I am a little better prepare, I expect this to happen. Anyway I'm done, for now.

I'm sorry to hear about all your troubles!
In the future, if you have an issue that occurs twice or more in a short period of time, you need to start looking at what's going wrong so you can keep things safe.
With regard to those external drives:
You may want to invest in the application Disk Warrior; it can repair many errors that Disk Utility isn't able to touch.
Odds are what happened is you thoroughly corrupted the directories on the drives by yanking the USB cords instead of ejecting them properly. If the directory is corrupted, it's no easy task to get the data saved!
A few questions about the drives:
    1) What are the brand names?
    2) Have you used these drives with other machines in the past?
    3) Do the drives have their own power supplies?
    4) Were they connected directly to the iMac?
    Some questions about your computer:
    1) Have any other peripherals caused you troubles?
    2) How large of a hard drive does the computer have & how much space is free?
    3) How old is the iMac?
    4) Do you have the original install discs?
Lots of questions, but the answers should be helpful.

  • Airport extreme/hard drive problems

    Any advice appreciated...
Our airport extreme only intermittently recognizes our Lace hard drive and it's driving us crazy. We bought macbook, the airport, and hard drive at the same time (yes we abandoned the PC world) and had a friend hook it up. For two months everything worked fine and we even hooked our printer to the airport and printed wirelessly.
Then for no particular reason, the harddrive disappeared and we can no longer access it wirelessly. We can, however, plug the harddrive USB into the Macbook and we can use the harddrive perfectly. Also, interesting, if we open airport utility and click on "disks", the harddrive is there, but it doesn't show up on the desktop or Finder and we can't access it.
I've called Apple tech support numerous times (We bought the extra service, but sadly that didn't keep us from having to spend an extremely obnoxious time on hold. We thought Apples were supposed to easy. but that's another story..). So far, we did get the airport and Macbook to recognize the hard drive by simultaneously renaming the harddrive and unplugging the hard drive and Airport. That worked for exactly 18 hours. Then the harddrive disappeared again. I called tech support twice but after 45 minutes on hold each time, I lost my patience. (They make us hold for the first step, then hold again for the product specialists. Gee we sure are glad we spent extra for the extended service!)
Other interesting tidbits: We've never had a problem with wireless internet service and have always been able to wireless send jobs to the printer.
    Any ideas?
    Signed and thank you,
Not so sure switching to Apple was a good move.

This is the most acceptable solution I have come up with:
Either go to the DHCP tab under internet settings on the router and "reserve" IP numbers for any hardware that interacts with the drive or manually set IP numbers in your network instead of using DHCP. The problem occurs when an IP number to any computer connected to the drive changes unexpectedly. This would be whenever the DHCP lease renews if your computer is asleep when this happens. I have not had a single drive issue since I set this up.
If you need to access your drive from a remote location where you don't have control over how the network there operates, then avoid letting your computer sleep while it is connected to the drive.
I chose to manually assign an IP number to my desktop and also to remote base stations, however this is not so convenient for my laptop because it then wants to use the manual settings everywhere unless I set up another "location" which has to be manually changed. This is where reserving IP numbers under the DHCP tab was really useful. The laptops on my network are still getting their numbers from the DHCP server but the server knows to give each one the same number based on their MAC addresses.
If you take a look at the default settings for DHCP, you will notice that not all the available numbers are being assigned through the DHCP server. You can use numbers outside this range (other than x.x.x.255) for your manually assigned IP numbers and still have DHCP running for when guests come over to use your network.

  • Firewire drive won't wakeup from sleep

I have an external drive using a Prolific Tech chip which can be connected firewire or USB.
When connected firewire (which is almost twice as fast as USB), when my Macbook goes to sleep the drive sometimes won't wake up.
If I connect the drive using USB, I don't have this problem.
Is it a hardware problem with this chipset or a known issue with Mac OS X and firewire drives?
    Thanks

It is a firmware issue. Some hard drives do not experience this issue. Some Prolific chipset drives also don't have this problem. I would take it up with the vendor who made the external Firewire case of the drive and see if a firmware update is available to fix the issue.

  • Extreme problems with airport and harddrive no pun intended. please help.

okay experts, please help. i have a lacie brick 500gb external drive that i got yesterday. i attatched it to the airport and the drive showed up on the desktop fine and dandy. the problem was that no backup software would recognize that a hard drive was attatched. i was given some advice to format the hard disk for apple using disk utility. i did that and it finished formatting this morning. (i had to do all this by plugging the hard drive in directly to the computer's usb port, it wouldn't let me do it attatched to the airport) now the dilemma is that when i attatch it to the airport, the disk no longer even shows up on the desktop, or anywhere else. wen i go to airport utility, manual setup and disks, it shows the hard drive there, but nowhere else. i know it isn't a problem with the hard drive because when plugged in directly to the computer, everything works fine. can someone please give me a run through of the settings i need to have set? i'm quite sure it is correct. i am just frustrated beyond belief getting this hard drive to work via the airport. thank you very much guys and gals.
    wait....update
okay. finally, it is on the desktop, but not how it should be. superduper or the lacie backup system still doesn't recognize it as a disk. when i plug in the h.d. to the computer usb port it shows up as an orange icon on the desktop and is recognized by the software. but when i plug it in via the airport it shows up on the desktop as a different icon, like a box and isn't recognized by the software. what on earth is going on?
    this is driving me mad.

You need to make sure that your backup software supports Bonjour(network attached) devices. I use the mac backup program and it recognizes AEBSn disk devices.
Can you copy a file manually from finder to the drive?

  • Airport extreme and firewire hard drives

I am gathering from reading here that I will be unable to use my 2 firewire external hard drives with this or have I got that wrong?

there is no way to directly connect any FireWire drives.
I have read several of the posts on this topic, so my original idea to get a firewire-usb hub won't work.
    Here is my objective:
    1. Centralize files to share between my PowerBook G4 and my Dell laptop so that I don't get mixed up about what system has the most up-to-date files on it.
    2. Create consistent backups of the files.
    What I have is:
    a. Airport Extreme to plug a shared drive into
    b. 2 identical USB drives
    c. 2 identical firewire drives
Since both my systems are laptops, setting up consistent backups has not been possible - external drives are usually disconnected.
Is there a way to utilize my firewire drives, or do I have to write it off as only sometimes useful as the PB G4 backup drive? There was a mention above to no "direct" way to link - how about indirect?
    Thanks!

  • When I download a movie from iTunes the cover art disappears. I try get info and add the art, it doesn't show up. So it's just gray. It opens and plays fine. Apple can't figure it out. It's an nas drive. When I use a firewire drive I get the art

When I download movies from iTunes to my NAS drive, I don't get the cover art. It shows up while its downloading, but when it's finish it disappears. If it has an iTunes extra the cover art is there. I tried get info and add the cover art, it never shows. Regardless of how I add it. Funny thing is, if I download the same movie to my external firewire drive, no problem its there. I've called Apple with no success. I've even tried copying the movie with the art from the firewire drive to replace the file on then NAS drive I still loose the movie cover art. I also tried several times to re download it, no luck. Any ideas? I'm out of ideas.

Do you have any videos/movies in the video app?
In iTunes if you right click on the video and select Get Info and go to the Option tap what Media Type is shown?

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

  • Can OS be installed and run from a Firewire drive?

    Hello,
I recently started to switch from WindowsXP to a Mac Mini. I was considering installing WindowsXP to a drive that I put into my AMS Venus 3.5" drive enclosure. This is a combination enclosure that supports USB 2.0 and Firewire 400. I've never used a Firewire device before so I don't know how well XP would install to and run from a Firewire drive. I'd like to setup XP to run underr Parallels. Its a Seageate 160gig 7200rpm drive that's about 1 1/2 years old.
Is this possible? Is is actually usable going through a Firewire connection?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Hi Jeff,
installing Windows under Parallels will produce two files that contain the Windows System itself (filename.hdd) and the configuration file (filename.pvs).
These two files can indeed be put onto an external harddisk and run from it.
It is quite usuable and you should get the same 'speed' as if these files where on your internal HD.
Have a look at the PDF files here http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/ for further information on how-to.
    Have Fun
    Stefan

  • Lost the access to the first partion  of the firewire drive and the data ?

    Hello to everybody,
after i moved 5,5GB Data from my internal harddisk, HFS+ , to my external Firewire drive, FAT 32 formatted for compatilibilty with a PC, i lost the access to the first partion of the firewire drive and the data. • Firewire and OWC Drives

I just purchased 2 1TB OWC firewire drives and have daisy chained them to my MiniStack V2 (firewire port) connected to my Mac Mini. I have had a series of issues which I will explain below. I should note that the OWC drives are not alike. One is a Seagate with an Oxford 934 Quad interface, and the other is a Hitachi with an Oxford 934 FW 400 / USB2 only.
    1) When I have the Mac set to put the hard drive to sleep when possible (runs quieter), the Hitachi doe s not always seem to wake, resulting in the system hanging. The only fix is to disconnect the firewird going to the OWC/Hitachi drive.
    2) When the Mac is not set to sleep harddrives, things seemed OK until (a) my Quicken 07 crashed (files are on MiniStack); (b) Software Update failed; (c) finder would not relaunch. Again, things corrected themselves when the firewire cable to the OWC drives was disconnected.
Any ideas what might be going on?

I had problems with OWC drives in the past. Especially the ones with the Oxford 911 chip. I first hooked the drive via FW to the Ministack and then with usb 2.0 I tried using a Belkin powered Hub. The problem I was having was the drive wouldn't finish a burn either cd or dvd.
What I found out by trial and error, I had to hook the drive to the main computer FW or USB port for it to work properly. Then I remembered what a friend told me about daisy chaining. If you have a burner in the chain,it must be hooked first to the main computer and then hook other stuff afterward. Since I only have one FW port on the Mini, I hooked the Burner Via USB and my Ministack Via FW.
    I hope this helps.
