iMac 20inch   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I don't think that it is going to matter whether you connect to your DSL modem with Airport or with ethernet. It is the way the modem is configured that determines your Mac's IP address. The modem appears to be configured to negotiate your internet connection for you, probably using PPPoE to connect with your ISP and be assigned your external IP address and using DHCP to assign a local (internal) IP to anything that makes up your LAN, even if it is just your lone iMac.
There is a little app that you can get that appears in your finder menu bar that will tell you both your internal and external IP address, called IPMenu. Mine is installed in Apps/Utilities and is in a startuo item in my user account, so it isalways there without me having to remember to run it. Here is a link;

  • Airport and internet sharing turns off by itself

Hi everyone, I have an imac that I purchased earlier this year, and I use internet sharing to get internet for my ipod touch. Until a few months ago, this worked fine but now airport and internet sharing turn off every time I restart the computer and I have to turn both back on every time. Is anyone else experiencing this problem or know hot to fix it?

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Download and install the v10.5.8 combo update available here.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
One of the "fixes" includes: - compatibility and reliability issues when joining AirPort networks.
After the installation, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Airport and internet telephone adaptors

I had my Internet and Airport Extreme working fine. Then I ordered telephone via ADSL, and just as I got my telephone adaptor working, Airport didn't connect me to Internet any more. I get Internet via the Ethernet on my Powerbook, but if I connect via Airport, it fails. The name of the telephone adaptor causing my grief, is Vood VRG 121. How can i remedy this? Will using some kind of switch or router between the Airport Extreme and the telephone adaptor work?

Hej Anders (jag talar inte Norsk....) Hello... OK, I will tell you how I got my airport back, after getting a new hard drive put in... I am suspecting your problems were from the airport's settings being for the dial-up service you had previously- what we need to do is introduce your airport base station to the ADSL (we just use DSL here - for digital subscriber line....semantics: same thing). Get a piece of paper and have in mind the passwords you will want to use... three will be needed if you are going to go all the way into WEP-personal security....) You need a paperclip, bent open, to hold the reset button on the base station. Go ahead an unplug the ADSL modem, and the airport a minute...while they sit unplugged, open on your computer both airport set-up assistant, and airport admin utility....have them separated, so you can see each of their boxes fully. Turn airport on.
Now plug your ethernet cable into the base station WAN Port (has circle of dots next to it- it is also right next to the reset button...) Now plug the power cord for the ADSL and your base station in to the electricity.....
Now, open system preferences>network. It will show Location: select airport
and below that SHOW: select network port configurations. Move airport (click-drag) to the top, and make sure the box has a checkmark) uncheck the others; but if like me, you still want to plug in directly once in a while, you may leave a check on ethernet- is faster if say,the airport broke). Here is where I have a question for you: do you know the settings for the ADSL? If you now went to Show airport, then the tcp/ip button, can you manually insert your settings? It may not matter- for now.....)
Now pick up the paperclip, and press the reset button, holding in there for thirty seconds (the light begins to flutter: keep holding it for the full thirty seconds)
Now, get to the computer, and begin the airport setup assistant....use new airport, and re-enter you passwords as you go(write down the passwords you enter, and for which window you do so)....
At the end of airport set-up assistant, your admin utility window should show your airport network in it. (the name you gave it, and its IP address)
Now,clik on configure> and a new window will open, titled with the name you gave the network (or the base station name..now i am confusing myself... I cannot run it without resetting my system- some is from memory here...)
I will assume all was fine to here: Be ready to write down any trouble codes, or warnings you get, so we can all read your problems, if any... BAck to your network's window... You see across top different bubbles to open: airport, internet, network, port mapping access control WDS... With the Airport bubble clicked blue, we see base station name....change password, and base station options: the password was just put in, so, leave it: In base station options:clicking drops a window down: uncheck all the boxes for best security... click on the USB printer tab, and see if your computer is there.
(a different set of instructions...) then click OK.... If you had not been connected to the web at end of airport setup assistant, you can open the next 2 boxes: internet and network: but you need the info from the ADSL people...
Back to assuming you are on (the airport reads data from the dsl box...) next proceed to access control...the airport ID is the number that shows in system preferences (and depending on updates, you may just get a box to check: my computer, then it fills automatically...Otherwise:sys prefs, location airport, show airport: there is the id by airport id)
Now back to the first page: (airport box at top).... your settings should have been done in the set up for airport security, but you can open the bubble: wirelss options... the drop down for this shows "multicast rate" (read it, make your own choice based on conditions) I like to check "interference robustness"
(the one in menu bar is for the computer- this one is the base stat

  • Airport and Wireless network issues

I have read all the issues about airport and wireless network. I don't see the issues that I have. My issue is that my wireless network used to automatically connect as soon as I power up my powerbook; then one day I power up and I was connected to default and I did not see my wireless address listed. I when into airport setup to try and setup again and it would not let me saying my password was not right. I logged off and then on again this time my network address was listed, but it still would not connect automatically to the network, now everytime I go to the web I must pick my own network and put in a passwork that sometimes works and sometimes not.
I have not done any updates or put any new software on the powerbook, so this is not the reason for my problem.
    Please Help!!!
    Thank's
    La Vern
    G4 Power PC 15in Alum   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Had this issue with our imac after upgrading to 10.4
The answer was to go into Network and select airport tab.
Listed there (for me) were three settings. Delete all of them ,they will probably include the actual network you want! Click to apply. Re-start the Mac.
Go back to network and airport and you should now see only the network you wish to join. It will ask for passwords again!!
Click apply and restart. It worked for me.

  • MBP on G5 over airport sharing internet (Firewall issue)

Got my ADSL/router modem (intertex IX66 edflc) with two e/net ports feeding one PC and my G5 quad with airport fitted. Recently got a Mac book Pro. Originally i could not get my MBP to get an internet connection using dhcp from the G5. The for some odd reason i got one then lost it again. Then i regained it again so i noted the ip the MBP gained, it was 10.0.2.2 which i understand is what the G5 would issue when its sharing its internet connection. So i setup a manual Ip address, mask and router and i all worked very well. No dropouts or anything bad, apart from some more range from the quad would be nice.
However the problem with this story is that the MBP looses its internet connection (not Airport network) if i switch the G5 Firewall on. I have Personal web sharing on as required on both G5 & MBP.
So is it possible to get internet connection sharing from my G5 and still have my firewall on (as i don't like it off) ? I would have thought the elegance of OS X would allow me to get good wireless networking without having to kill my G5 firewall... Or am i doing something wrong ?
MBP & Quad all up to date with patches etc...

Niel - Thanks for the good suggestion.
When tracking the blocked ports in the logs, i noticed that the ports were constantly increasing upwards and so couldn't open them u. So i tried to revert the MBP to DHCP and after 60 seconds it hooked-up to the G5 even with the firewall on and all protective modes also on (stealth, udp blocked...?).
So with a little patience on start-up i get a good wifi connection, but when changing from one website to another there is a noticable delay as it loads-up. Each page has about a 3 second delay to load. Any ideas what's causing this ?

  • My Time Capsule WiFi connection and internet connection issue

My Time Capsule WiFi connection to other devices works fine, but for some reason it can not connect to the internet only when "it feels like it",it will go in and out showing that its connect (green dot on airport utilities) then literaly the next second it disconnected (showing a yellow dot on airport utility) and it does that continuesly sometimes it stops doing for a couple of hours. I basically did every thing like reseting it, unplugging wait for what ever time, and it still does the same thing. i do have ethernet cable connect to the Time Capsule. Also sometimes my airport utilities say it cant find my Time Capsule (rarely) . So obviously i dont have a clue whats going on. PLEASE HELP

You have an issue with the local network. Pings to your local network device should be in the order of 5-10ms tops..
Look at your first line.. 2293ms that is over 2sec for the local router to respond.. but it is likely that little box that is the problem. You will get some websites simply time out if they take that long to respond.
Let me recommend you either get some help from ATT or get a local technician to fix it. There are other better ways to connect things.. in the end getting it cabled with ethernet is the best. Buy a long long ethernet cable if you want to have a test.. so you can plug the TC into the modem. Bypass the HPNA over cable slug.

  • Windows 7 and internet connection issue

I am having a problem connecting to internet on Windows 7 OS. I have a Macbook that installed Windows 7 on Bootcamp. When I connect the DSL wire to my computer in dormitory it connects automatically. But when I go to somewhere else it doesn't connect. I also tried to connect using IP address which consists of 4-5 rows of numbers. Unfortunately, I cannot find the tab where I can enter these IP address numbers. So I was wondering if there is something wrong with my Network Driver (or may be it is missing some networking drivers).
The main reason I want to connect to the Internet in Windows system is because I need to activate Keyshot (which requires internet connection and it works only on windows platform). My teacher said if the IP system is different on the Windows installed Macintosh, then it may not activate the product. So I was wondering if my Windows networking system works differently from Windows system on normal PC. If so how to fix this connection problem. Sorry if my question is too complicated.
But again, I am able to connect on my windows at home. But this connection is still not allowing me to activate the software. As I understood, this program requires normal internet connection of Windows. I don't know what is wrong with my computer.

Thanks for the direction. Did you mention the Bootcamp forum within this Apple.com or are you talking about a forum that exists outside of apple.com (maybe some website solely devoted to Bootcamp or windows issues)?

  • Airport and internet connection

Can anyone help me with this? My internet connection has been a problem off and on for years but now, its unbearable. I have a wireless setup. For years I used my airport extreme base station to hook up to the internet. I would lose the connection and have to reboot the base station to get the internet signal back. Finally, I used my airport express as the base station and the problem disappeared for awhile but eventually, I had the same problem. My internet provider is Time Warner. I exchanged the modem and the cable. It was fine for awhile but here I am again! I just bought a new router, Belkin N Wireless Router and things seemed to be looking up but no! The signal is strong in one room but as I move to my living room which isn't that far (I live in a NYC apt) the signal fades out! This is maddening! Anyone got any suggestions on what is going on? HELP!

there are a lot of things that can affect a wireless signal. are there a lot of wifi's in your building? if so, they might be using the same wireless channel, which will cause interference, which you will see as the fading out.
there could also be something in the walls that is interfering with your wifi.
right after you reboot your wifi, is the signal good through out your apartment? if so, that would suggest to me that you're getting some kind of interference. do a google search for 'wifi locator's' for your operating system and find one that will list what channel each wifi is on. look through the list to see what everyone is using, and then pick one that is not in use by the others. the best channels to use are 1, 6 or 11.
you will also have to go into your router and do some advanced configuration, but the manual and their tech support should be able to help you with it.

  • Airport and Internet Connectivity Unreliable

I just upgraded my Powerbook G4 to 10.4.3 from 10.3.x. One annoying feature I appear to have picked up is that when I awaken my Powerbook from Sleep mode, it does not automatically reconnect to the Airport network and to the internet. I have to go into the drop down and select my home network each time, and/or wait about 1-2 mins for it to reconnect.
What is this? What is the fix? Help appreciated. I have downloaded all the various Airport updates, but the problem persists.

    Hi Vinay,
Well, if you didn't have problems with your network connection under 10.3.x (and you haven't changed any settings on your router) then we can focus on the OS. Have you attempted to repair permissions (via Disk Utility) yet? I know that everyone and their dog suggest this, but it actually does help, and I can say from personal experience that it was seriously needed after updating to 10.4.2 and 10.4.3. If, after repairing permissions (and you may have to do it multiple times followed with restarts) you still have problems you may just have to reinstall the os. I know this sounds drastic, but it took 3 times for me to get 10.4.3 to work well; It may take more than once to get things right. Hopefully, you have a bootable backup of your OS; I've found that doing an "erase and install" followed by tranferring your settings from the backup/other computer typically nets the best results. Good luck.

  • Airport and internet

Hi I have new internet service and airport express no longer accesses the internet.  I can get local access but not internet. I am working off a PC with Vista but have iMacs as well.

When changing ISPs (or network equipment) it's always a good idea to start from "scratch" in configuring your equipment.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minumum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort Express Base Station (AX), and computer(s).
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the AX. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the AEBS resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the AEBS; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, computers connected to the AX wireless, should be able to access the Internet. If so, you can then use the AirPort Utility to configure wireless security and any other desired options.

  • Verizon Fios and internet connection issue for ONLY some of my devices

Lost my internet connection last night for about half of my devices (iMac, iPad, Kindle) but the funny thing is that the other devices are able to connect to the internet at the same time.
The Verizon Fios router is MI424WR with dual antennae.  I have a Time Capsule hooked up via ethernet to the Verizon router and am using the TC as a wireless access point.
As I am not computer knowledgable, could this happen if there was a firmware update on the Fios router?  Could the Fios router allow only certain devices access while denying access to other devices to the internet?  It seems that if only one device can access the internet, the system does work but there is a "gatekeeper" that is not allowing access.

No, you use the airport utility not Network Preferences which is your local computer setup.
Setup of the TC you need to select it in the airport utility.. on either a Mac or in a phone or ipad.
When you open it click on the TC and go to the edit tab and check all the details. eg the bridge is here.
Go to the wireless tab to setup wireless.
I recommend a change of wireless name if you do not use names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. do so.
See how you go without a factory reset but if that doesn't work then a reset is in order.

  • Can't automatically connect to Airport and Internet after restart

I run a brand new iMac Intel and an AirPort Express. Each time I reboot my iMac I loose my Internet connection. The machine says it's got full coverage signal and that it is connected to my preferred network. Still, I can't browse the Internet (tried even with IP-only) or read e-mails or anything else.
The only way to get back on is to turn off Airpot on my computer, and immediately after turn it on again. Then everything works as it should.
But I want it to connect automatically as it is supposed to.
I found the following page at Apple support, but it didn't solve my problem:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304482
Anyone else experiencing the same problem, or having any clue why this is happening and/or how to solve this problem?
iMac 24" Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yes, Blue Rider, I am experiencing that problem. I went to the Apple support page that you referenced, but doing what they suggested didn't solve my problem either. This lack of automatic connection affects my mail program too. I have to click on a connection button to activate the mail. All this for me started a few days ago after a recent security update. Tomorrow, I'll be calling AppleCare. I hope they can figure it out.

  • Bluetooth Network and Internet sharing issue

I'm trying to set up a network through Bluetooth between two computers having the latest Toshiba Stack installed, and to share the Internet connection with the second computer.
On the firs computer I've set the Internet Connection Sharing, and because of this it automatically sets the TCP/IP adresses for the Bluetooth Personal Area network (192.168.0.1).
On the 2nd computer, i've set everything to obtain it automatically. Firewalls (Kaspersky) disabled.
When I connect the 2 Bluetooth devices, everything looks fine, the 2nd automatically obtains the IP adress, I can ping both computers, and the Internet also works on the 2nd computer, for a few seconds! After that, it appears like the 2nd computer is disconnected from the network... what could be the problem?
In the event viewer under the System tab, I've found Informations like these:
    2nd comp:
The system detected that network adapter \DEVICE\TCPIP_{E44D18EB-91F5-4... was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter.
The browser has forced an election on network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{E44D18EB-... because a master browser was stopped.
and at 1st comp also appeares this:
The system detected that network adapter Bluetooth...Area Network - Packet Scheduler Miniport was disconnected from the network, and the adapter's network configuration has been released. If the network adapter was not disconnected, this may indicate that it has malfunctioned. Please contact your vendor for updated drivers.
