  • Airport and Linksys WEP do not play well with each other

    I have a MacBook Pro (15", 2.0ghz, 2gb RAM, 100gb HDD - OSX 10.4.8) connecting to Linksys AP's and/or Router with WEP.
I can NOT connect to WEP locked Linksys stuff. I have read all over the internets that you just prefix the WEP key with a $, but when I try and do that - OSX will not take the key - it just makes the "dunk" noise that means "you can't do that, stupidhead". I believe this information is for older versions of the Airport software.
This has happened with my WRT54g at home, as well as two WAP54GP's I just set up at my new office all with the latest / new firmwares.
Using the same key in Boot Camp/Windows (cut and pasted out of a text file on a USB thumb drive) it works just perfectly. Is there a way to get some more debug level info out of Airport when it tries to connect?
Here is a screenshot of my config:

Easiest solution is to use WPA instead, this is actually secure compared to WEP.
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

  • Mac mini AirPort and Linksys

I have a Mac mini with an AirPort Extreme Card built in. I got a Linksys Router because I am having Cable Internet installed next weekend. The cable modem will have to connect to my brother's PC because he doesn't have a wireless internect card. Anyways, I got a Linksys Router and I was wondering if it is compatible with Mac OS X 10.4.6 and AirPort. I also, if it isn't too much to ask, how to connect it because I am a newbie at this... Thank you so much for your time and taking the time to read this.
    Mario

OK… the first thing you're going to have to do is set up your modem/router. Once you have done that I suggest you use your brother's PC to set up the wireless network (following the instructions supplied by LinkSys).
Once you have set up the wireless network on the modem/router and you are armed with the SSID (wireless network name), encryption method (I would suggest WPA/WPA2) and the password you can set up your Mac mini.
On you Mac mini if you open…
System Preferences > Network > Airport > Airport
… you will see "By default, join" option. Change it to "Preferred networks". Now, you should see an empty list with a +, - and Edit buttons below. Click on the + button and inster the Network Name (SSID), seelct the encryption mether you chose when you set up modem/router and when the password fiueld appears insert that too. Click OK and the window should disappear. Now click Apply in the Network System Preference and if you've done everything right your mini should now join your wireless network.
    That's it.

  • I have a airport base station, will it work with netgear and linksys cards?

So I am at a hous ethat is using a low end netgear router to wirlessly serve about 4 computers. I am the only Mac in the house and suggested they a Airport Base, will their linksys and netgear wireless cards work with the airport Base or should they just upgrade to a high end linksys router?

    Hi Chris:
Yes, the AEBS is compatable with any 802.11 B/G cards including Netgear and Linksys cards.
I've used many of the wireless routers that are available (Netgear and Linksys) and recently upgraded to an AEBS. I've found you really get what you pay for. I've had little problems with the AEBS and cross compatiability.
    I hope this helps!

  • Powerbook won't print to LaserWriter 16/600 via Airport w/linksys

Powerbook is running Tiger, AppleTalk is turned on and cannot print over Airport network using regular base station. LaserWriter is plugged into Linksys router that also has Base Station connected to it.
When I log into the Admin utility is shows the printer tab for a split second then it disappears..does that have anything to do with it?

I don't knwo which one is set for what or which is
doign the DHCP. anything connected to the linksys is
    pulling a 192.168 IP, the laptop a 10.1 IP.
Here's at least one reason why you can't print. Both devices have to be on the same network unless you want to have problems with them communicating. One is on a Class C 192.168.something.x net, and one is on a Class A 10.x.x,x net. Put both on the same net. Simple ways to do this:
1 turn off DHCP on the Linksys. If you have the Airport hooked to the Linksys using the Linksys' WAN port, then everything on the Linksys should be part of the Airport's Class A net. The Linksys is now an expensive switch.
2 sell the Linksys and replace it with a real, cheap, switch.
3 turn off the DHCP on the Airport. If you set things correctly with the Linksys and the Airport software, and you have the Airport connected to one of the Linksys' LAN ports, then the Airport is now a wireless access point. Everything will be on the Linksys' Class C net.
4 sell the Airport and replace it with a dedicated wireless access point.
5 sell both the Airport and the Linksys and replace them both with a single device which combines a router, a wireless access point, and a four-port LAN switch in one. Linksys, Belkin, and Netgear, to name but three vendors, make such units.
    I have
the linksys router for my G4 tower and laserwriter. I
have the airport router to create a wireless network
    for my laptop.
what should I do? please be specific. thanks
You've got two nets. You need to have only one. Once you have only one, if you still have problems we can fix those fairly easily.

  • Airport Extreme, Linksys Router WRT54G: Internet is Impossibly Slow

I have a problem regarding wireless internet activity on my Powerbook G4. In my house, I have a Linksys Router (WRT54G) that has worked fine for other laptops (including an iBook running Airport Extreme, a Powerbook G4 running Airport, and an iMac running Airport) for many years. When I got a refurbished Powerbook G4 1.67 GHz with Airport Extreme, I found that while Airport could be configured to recognize the wireless network (with a WEP 40/128-bit encrypted key), it barely works on the computer. The signal strength is strong (the laptop is hooked up right above the Linksys router), but the Internet barely works at all. Surfing to webpages takes 10-20-30 sec to work, and often the connection seems to drop off all together. Something is clearly wrong because despite the fact that this is my fastest computer with the fastest wireless capability, it runs at a slower pace than any computer I have ever used on the web.
I was wondering if anyone has had similar problems with getting Wireless Extreme on Powerbook G4s to work with this particular (and older) model of Linksys wireless browser (WRT54G). Some Internet sleuthing led me to believe that perhaps the router firmware needs to be updated or something like that, but I haven't really found any definitive answers. If there is anything wrong on the laptop-OS-side, I have no idea. I would appreciate any pointers that you can provide!
    Thank you to all,
    Matthew

    Hi all,
Thank you for your help. Unfortunately, my problems persist.
I was able to reset my router and to configure it again on the web-based router configuration.
As per your suggestion, I tried switching the Wireless Network Mode to "G-only." Not only did this kick off my older computers on the network (an old iMac and an older Powerbook G4, both with normal airport), but it did not fix the speed problems on the new Powerbook G4/with Airport Extreme. I am back on the mixed setting now in order to get most of the computers on the network back to their old working states...
I also tried disabling my WEP encrypted key but found that this did not speed anything up at all.
I have upgraded my firmware from its previous version, v 1.41.2 (very old!), to the latest from the Linksys website: v 4.30.5. This has not helped at all either.
Is it possible that there is any setting on the Powerbook/Airport Extreme itself that is causing these problems?
Thank you all again for your help,
    Matthew

  • AirPort Extreme + Linksys WRT54g?

I have a Nov 09 AirPort withought dual band networking, that replaced a like 2005 Linksys WRT54G router.
I was wanting to do this and see if it is possible.
Have AirPort set up as main router, N only. Have Linksys as extended, connected via ethernet, set to wireless-G. Having the N only devices connect to AirPort and all non-N connect to Linksys.
Will the linksys make the AirPort run slower at G speeds? Right now everything is connected to AirPort g/n devices only. I wouldnt want to end up doing all this work and all the speeds be the same.

Will the linksys make the AirPort run slower at G speeds?
No, with the Linksys connected to the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) by Ethernet, you can create a "simultaneous" dual-band network, where non-"n" clients would connect to the Linksys router and not affect the bandwidth of the AEBSn.

  • Airport and Buffalo Airstation

I have an Airport card installed in one Pismo and Buffalo Airstation in another. The airport card is able to recieve a wi-fi network signal, but the Buffalo AirStation reports "There was an error joining the Airport Network linksys".
What am I doing wrong? Both computers are identically configured for Airport. When I switch cards the Airport card equipped computer is able to access the network and the Buffalo card doesn't.
    I welcome your thoughts.
    Thanks.

    Duane:
Thanks for getting back to me, and for confirming my guess. The Airstation card worked when I used it at my son-in-law's, receiving a signal from his Airport Extreme base station. So, I am pretty sure the card works. Question now is, where should I look for incompatibility or misconfiguration?

  • Time Capsule and Linksys Router Issues

The internet cable is connected to the WAN port and the Time Capsule is connected is to one of the ports of the Linksys router. I can successfully backup my MacPro and use the internet for Mail and Safari.
I want to take advantage of the high speed ethernet performance of Time Capsule. However, I don't know if the Time Capsule is really faster than my Linksys router.  Where do I get this information? I suspect the Time Capsule is much faster because I just purchased the Time Capsule. The router is at least 5 years old.
In spite my concern about the speeds of the Time Capsule and Linksys router, I tried to attach the Time capsule as recommended by Apple for a  "first time set up." It failed. The Time Capsule using the AirPort Utility cannot make a network connection. I reestablished the devices as given in paragraph one. WiFi runs again.

Ethernet speed on your local network is determined by the slowest connected device which most likely will be the LinkSys router or your computer.

  • Is there a way to create a shared net conn. between Airport and Ethenet?

Is there a way to create a shared internet connection between one airport computer and another via ethernet?
I have one computer (lets call this computer 'A') connected to the net via Airport which connects to a router, which is directly connected to my ADSL line.
However, my other computer (computer 'B') is not located within range of this wireless router.
Is there a way for me to send my internet connection via computer A to computer B, via an Ethernet cable or Airport connection or otherwise?
    ADSL---Wireless Router---(Airport)---Computer A---(Ethernet)---Computer B

Is there a way for me to send my internet connection via computer A to computer B, via an Ethernet cable or Airport connection or otherwise?
Yes, it's called Internet Sharing, and here's how to set it up...
To setup for Internet Sharing (Wireless to Wired):
    Enable Software Firewall (Computer A)
System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall
o Click Stop to start the software firewall
    Setup the Network
ADSL Modem > (Ethernet cable) > (Ethernet port) Wireless Internet Router > (wireless) > (AirPort Card) Computer A (Ethernet port) > (Ethernet cable) > (Ethernet port) Computer B
    Setup Port Order (Computer A)
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
o Verify that "AirPort" and "Built-In Ethernet" are enabled.
o Verify that "AirPort" is at the top of the list, followed by "Built-In Ethernet."
    o Click "Apply Now."
Configure the Internet Connection (Computer A)
    System Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort > TCP/IP
    o Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
o Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
    Enable Internet Sharing (Computer A)
System Preferences > Sharing > Internet
o Share your connection from: AirPort
o To computers using: Built-In Ethernet (checked) (Note: Uncheck all other entries in the list.)
    o Click Start

How do I clean up my new FIOS connection? I just cahnged ISP Fios and they reqquired a router of thier own in front of my AirPort Extreme. Since then I have blinking yellow light on the AirPort and AirPort utility keeps promting for an edit. Suggests canging from NAT to "Bridge mode". Obviuosly U have some internet or this post would not go anywhere, my knowledge base is not enought to feel comfortable with changing the settings. Correctly editing can be tricky, so how do I make necessary changes?

How do I clean up my new FIOS connection?
The FIOS router needs to be in Bridge Mode to prevent the Double NAT error from occurring when two routers are both fighting with each other for control of the network.
Unfortunately, the likely problem from the FIOS side is that FIOS support will either tell you that their router cannot be configured to operate in Bridge Mode, or if it can, they will not tell you how to do it.
But, it could not hurt to check with FIOS to see if anything might have changed recently in this regard, so your first call would be to FIOS support.
If you cannot change the FIOS router to Bridge Mode, the alternate plan would be to change the AirPort Extreme to Bridge Mode. If you are using the Guest Network feature on the AirPort Extreme at this time, that feature will not work correctly when the AirPort is set up in Bridge Mode.

  • Airport and internet sharing turns off by itself

Hi everyone, I have an imac that I purchased earlier this year, and I use internet sharing to get internet for my ipod touch. Until a few months ago, this worked fine but now airport and internet sharing turn off every time I restart the computer and I have to turn both back on every time. Is anyone else experiencing this problem or know hot to fix it?

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Download and install the v10.5.8 combo update available here.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
One of the "fixes" includes: - compatibility and reliability issues when joining AirPort networks.
After the installation, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • I was setting up my Airport and thought the first set up did not go through, so I set up again and I ended up with two accounts instead of one.  How can I manage to have only one account now? Thanks for the help.

I was setting up my Airport and thought the first set up dod not go through, then I set up again and ended up with two wireless accounts.  I use it for the prointer and the iPad, and I can see both accounts in the iPad.  How do I get rid of one account?  Thanks for the help!

me.com accounts can be used for iCloud.  See the FAQ section in:

but it may be too late if you have already created a new AppleID.
A few years ago Apple said they were working on allowing account merging, but it never happened (maybe objections from copyright holders).

  • Late 2005 - Airport and Bluetooth - won't work together

    Hi everybody!
    I have a problem with my Powermac G5 (late2005).
I have the Airport Extreme with Bluetooth 2.0+EDR card installed.
WLAN and Bluetooth work both if operated separately.
But when Airport is activated and running and I turn on Bluetooth (and connect for example my Magic Mouse) Airport breaks down. - I loose my connection and can't see any other wireless networks.
Switching to another Airport channel din't help.
Does anybody have an idea what to do?
    Thanks a lot!
    Chris

    I just started trying BT.
I allready had a look at the cabling and read about it, that it doesnt matter how the calbes are connected to the airport card.
I don't think I can put anything between the antennas.
The late2005 has the build-in antenna (for Airport and BT)...
But I will have a look if I can place anything between an I will change the cabling...
    Thanks so far!
