Airport and routers

ARe there any Mac gurus out there?
I have a brand new Intel-based iMac. Works great and has worked just fine with the wireless router for months. The iMac is in a separate building from the modem and router and still works fine, gets a great signal.
Here is the mysterious problem.
It suddenly will not, or cannot connect to the wireless network. It either does not even list the network or if it does, and I enter the required WEP password (and I checked that the password is correct) - it will not connect like it used to. I get a message "There was an error joining the Aiport network".
All the TCP/IP settings etc. are exactly the same as they have been all along. I'm not sure what else to try.
I know that there is still a good strong signal in this other building because I am sending this post from my Mac laptop using the same wireless network and I have it on the desk right next to the iMac that will not work.
Could this mean that the Airport hardware in this new iMac suddenly went bad?? Or what else?? Thanks!

Well, I know that the problem is NOT with my new iMac.
I picked it up and carried it to another location - the building which has the modem and router.
I set it up and it connected like a charm. I am about 4 feet away from the router.
So, for some reason, the good signal I enjoyed for months in this other building has suddenly vanished. Little to no signal at this other building on this iMac. For some odd reason, my laptop picks up the signal better, though it is not doing very well today either. Keeps losing the signal.
What would cause this to happen to the signal? Nothing has changed here. Nice clear line of sight between the router in building "a" and the computers in building "b".
Is there such a thing as a signal booster that I can stick on the iMac and hopefully get a more reliable and consistent signal?

How do I clean up my new FIOS connection? I just cahnged ISP Fios and they reqquired a router of thier own in front of my AirPort Extreme. Since then I have blinking yellow light on the AirPort and AirPort utility keeps promting for an edit. Suggests canging from NAT to "Bridge mode". Obviuosly U have some internet or this post would not go anywhere, my knowledge base is not enought to feel comfortable with changing the settings. Correctly editing can be tricky, so how do I make necessary changes?

How do I clean up my new FIOS connection?
The FIOS router needs to be in Bridge Mode to prevent the Double NAT error from occurring when two routers are both fighting with each other for control of the network.
Unfortunately, the likely problem from the FIOS side is that FIOS support will either tell you that their router cannot be configured to operate in Bridge Mode, or if it can, they will not tell you how to do it.
But, it could not hurt to check with FIOS to see if anything might have changed recently in this regard, so your first call would be to FIOS support.
If you cannot change the FIOS router to Bridge Mode, the alternate plan would be to change the AirPort Extreme to Bridge Mode. If you are using the Guest Network feature on the AirPort Extreme at this time, that feature will not work correctly when the AirPort is set up in Bridge Mode.

IPhone does not see airport extreme routers

So I did the ios 6 upgrade on my iPhone 4S and immediately lost my home Wi-Fi Airport Extreme routers (yes, both of them). My network works fine on all other devices not rnning ios 6 (other iPhones, iMac, Macbooks...). The problem is every time I try to log into my home network, it tells me that my password is invalid. Furthermore, the Airport Utility App says there are no airport base stations. The same utility sees both on all other devices.
So far I have followed all the steps listed in the multitude of forums and responses;
- Rebooted dozens of times (both the routers and the iPhone).
- Reset & restored my iPhone.
- Reverified my password on all other devices.
- Turned ust about everything on and off (network, Wi-Fi, location, cellular...etc.)
Still no glory with ios 6.

Fixed it.
The key was to reset and reinstall both Airport Extreme routers....not just cycle power, but actually grab a thumbtack and depress the reset buttons on the back of the routers.
After setting up the network again, my iPhone 4S (ios 6.0) works just fine...and the Airport Utility sees both routers again.

Is there a way to create a shared internet connection between one airport computer and another via ethernet?
I have one computer (lets call this computer 'A') connected to the net via Airport which connects to a router, which is directly connected to my ADSL line.
However, my other computer (computer 'B') is not located within range of this wireless router.
Is there a way for me to send my internet connection via computer A to computer B, via an Ethernet cable or Airport connection or otherwise?

Yes, it's called Internet Sharing, and here's how to set it up...
To setup for Internet Sharing (Wireless to Wired):
Enable Software Firewall (Computer A)
System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall
o Click Stop to start the software firewall
Setup the Network
ADSL Modem > (Ethernet cable) > (Ethernet port) Wireless Internet Router > (wireless) > (AirPort Card) Computer A (Ethernet port) > (Ethernet cable) > (Ethernet port) Computer B
Setup Port Order (Computer A)
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
o Verify that "AirPort" and "Built-In Ethernet" are enabled.
o Verify that "AirPort" is at the top of the list, followed by "Built-In Ethernet."
o Click "Apply Now."
Configure the Internet Connection (Computer A)
System Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort > TCP/IP
o Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
o Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
Enable Internet Sharing (Computer A)
System Preferences > Sharing > Internet
o Share your connection from: AirPort
o To computers using: Built-In Ethernet (checked) (Note: Uncheck all other entries in the list.)
o Click Start

Airport and internet sharing turns off by itself

Hi everyone, I have an imac that I purchased earlier this year, and I use internet sharing to get internet for my ipod touch. Until a few months ago, this worked fine but now airport and internet sharing turn off every time I restart the computer and I have to turn both back on every time. Is anyone else experiencing this problem or know hot to fix it?

One of the "fixes" includes: - compatibility and reliability issues when joining AirPort networks.
After the installation, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

You can use EEM scrip to achieve the same. Just check EEM scripting in the community directory for some examples.

I was setting up my Airport and thought the first set up did not go through, so I set up again and I ended up with two accounts instead of one. How can I manage to have only one account now? Thanks for the help.

me.com accounts can be used for iCloud. See the FAQ section in:

but it may be too late if you have already created a new AppleID.
A few years ago Apple said they were working on allowing account merging, but it never happened (maybe objections from copyright holders).

Late 2005 - Airport and Bluetooth - won't work together

Hi everybody!
I have a problem with my Powermac G5 (late2005).
I have the Airport Extreme with Bluetooth 2.0+EDR card installed.
WLAN and Bluetooth work both if operated separately.
But when Airport is activated and running and I turn on Bluetooth (and connect for example my Magic Mouse) Airport breaks down. - I loose my connection and can't see any other wireless networks.
Switching to another Airport channel din't help.
Does anybody have an idea what to do?

I just started trying BT.
I allready had a look at the cabling and read about it, that it doesnt matter how the calbes are connected to the airport card.
I don't think I can put anything between the antennas.
The late2005 has the build-in antenna (for Airport and BT)...
But I will have a look if I can place anything between an I will change the cabling...

I have an older Airport Express, would it help to install it? would it work best if it was installed in the same room? should it be installed half way in between? Get another Extreme? The Mac Book Pro on the middle floor can see 11 networks in the neighbourhood if that might be causing a problem or would if I installed the Express. Thank for your consideration.

I appologize for the font and colour, I compossed the question in pages and failed to notice the font colour as grey ... there are a variety of computers of various ages so I think it is using a setting that allows both 5G and 2.4 ... the connection to the Airport is thru a cable modem and cable does run throuhout the house ... maybe those hard wires would be a place to look at ... do you think that putting the 'Express' on the second floor might help ... thanks again ...

My apple tv keeps losing internet connection. I'm going from modem to airport and from airport to apple tv. I've replaced the modem and the apple tv and it still does it. Internet to my laptop via the airport wifi is fine and never drops out.

I keep having to restart it every time I want to use it. Sometimes I have to restart it multiple times. The cord goes from the cable modem to the airport and then from the airport to the apple tv. I've replaced the apple TV and I've replaced the modem and the problem persists. I assume it has to be the aiport? But the wifi from the airport works fine.
I tried bypassing the airport and going straight from the modem to the apple tv and it wouldn't work. That makes no sense to me.
I had a friend over to try and figure it out and he couldn't. Any idea what could be the problem??

The Ethernet cable from the modem should be connected to the AirPort's WAN (circle of dots) port and a second Ethernet cable should be connected between the AirPort's LAN (opposing arrows) port and the Ethernet port on the Apple TV. Is this the case?
If so, what is the make & model of the modem that the AirPort is connected to. Also what is the exact model of both the AirPort and the Apple TV?

I have a Time Capsule that I couldn't configure at one point. To recover from that I had to unplug it for many hours. You might try unplugging your unit overnight.

Airport and Printer Not working: Please Help!

I'm considering of trowing out my printer or the airport extreme, or my mac pro. The thing is, I don't no which one, So one more try; hope someone can help me!
My printer (Epson SP 2400) is working fine via USB directly and from my old G4 (also via Airport).
I can print from my Mac Pro, via Airport and then via the G4, but not directly from Macpro-airport.
I've got the latest update for every software, read all the articles on this forum (did the http://ftp.easysw.com/pub/cups/contrib/FixAirportPrinter.dmg solvers).
I hope I missed one trick and that someone can get me out of this frustration!

Airport problems after 8/12 airport and security update

My MacBook Pro which had been working flawlessly since I got it last year received the airport and security updates distributed today. After the reboot my airport turns itself off after a few minutes and will not come back on and the computer seems to be running hotter than usual. Booting from a recent clone of the drive without the updates did not fix the problem and the card turned itself off a few minutes after the reboot and will not come back on.
Anyone having similar problems after the update?

Does your problem occur only when unplugged. If so, then maybe this update is for you: http://support.apple.com/downloads/AirPortClient_Update_for_MacBook_and_MacBookPro. Check it out, but use your own judgment in installing; not much info is provided.

Delete the printer in System Preferences and re-add it. You may also want to restart the Airport.
