Airport auto-join 'oddness'

I have two systems at home, a Powerbook G4, and an iMac G5, both with 10.4.9 (and every update thereafter, barring the latest security patch), and both of which connect to an Airport Extreme base station (via built-in Airport cards).
Here's what's weird: the Airport network I've created (let's call it "Home") doesn't seem to come up automatically when I shutdown/restart the iMac. Home appears in the Airport menu, and what's more, I can connect to it without being prompted for the WPA passkey (mine is rather long, at 63 characters), but I always have to select it manually from the list. Not a big deal, but as far as I can tell, the settings on both machines are identical, and the Powerbook connects to the network without any problems.
Both systems have the network passkey in the system keychain, and both have Home designated as a preferred network. Furthermore, both systems are set to connect to preferred networks only. There are no other base stations/WAPs in my house, and besides, both computers are set to prompt before adding newly-discovered networks to the preferred list, so you don't have to worry about the iMac accidentally joining another network "higher on the list" without my realizing it.
As I've indicated, this isn't a life-threatening emergency by any means...but I know auto-join should always work in principle.

...do you have any further suggestions?
Check your setting on the network pref/options page and make sure that the only box selected is the one that states "Automatically add new networks . . . ." Make sure that the "Disconnect . . . when I log out" item is NOT selected.
I'm assuming you're having this problem with a secure (i.e. WEP or WPA) network. The next time you manually log on to the network, make sure you select the option to store your password in your keychain.
You can also try selecting the "Automatic" and "Preferred networks" options on the Network Pref, Airport Tab to see if the problem exists with either configuration.
One more little tidbit, if you're using WEP, when you log on to your network put a "$" as the first character of your network password. I'm not sure if this trick works with WPA, but you can try it and find out,
Hope this resolves your problem. cheers!

First, grow up.  Just because YOUR phone isn't working, doesn't mean Apple put out bad software.  I've not had any difficulty, nor has anyone else I know.  And just how is Apple risking lives with Bluetooth kits not working?  It's YOUR decision to talk on the phone or text and drive.  Not Apple's.
We're users here, volunteering our time to help others.  Posts like yours, which are whiny and ranting, simply means we're likely to ignore you and not provide you with any help.  Not to mention, it makes you look absolutely foolish.
Further making you look foolish is the fact that you haven't even asked a technical support question, nor have you provided anyone here with any troubleshooting steps you might have taken, including those recommended in the user guide.
    Good luck getting help.

  • Wi-Fi doesn't give Auto-Join or Forget Network options

Is this normal for iOS 5.1? If I go out of range or turn my WiFi off, and then come in range/turn wifi on, it won't autoconnect and I have to re-input the password. When I hit the blue arrow next to the connected network, it doesn't give me a Forget Network button or and Auto-Join switch. This is really annoying and I've restored/reset Network options plenty of times to no avail.

    Possibly found a solution...
I unplugged the router for a few seconds (I've tried this before) and then plugged it back in. Then I reset my network settings on the iPod. Then I manually logged into my network via the "Join Other Network" option in WiFi. I still don't have an "Auto-Join" Switch, but I have the Forget This Network button and when I turned WiFi off then on again, it reconnected automatically.

  • Mac Os X Lion - Wifi Auto-Join/Dropout Solution

Just a FYI for others who may encounter this problem after upgrading to Lion.

Using his recommendation I found simply removing 'Wifi' (by clicking the '-') in Network Preferences clicking 'Apply' and then adding it again via '+'. Resolved the wifi auto-join problem (on start-up and wake) and dropout issue for me.
Using a Macbook Pro 13" - 2011 model (upgrade - not clean install of Lion).

  • Set 'Auto-join' to on in a configuration profile?

We're using ICU generated profiles to provide WPA2 (EAP-SIM) Wi-Fi login configurations to our iPhone users. This works fine except that they need to manually set 'Auto-join' to ON to ensure they always login to Wi-Fi.
As we'd like to make sure everyone is using Wi-Fi instead of 3G when on campus, is there a way to configure this in a profile or over-the-air?

The deleting apps restriction is new in iOS 6 but is available only on supervised devices. You can supervise devices and create and install a configuration profile containing this restriction using Apple Configurator.

  • Auto-Join feature disappeared after resetting network settings

Previously the option to auto-join networks was present but not working. To try and alleviate this I decided to reset my network configs from the Settings app. Now when I look auto-join isn't an option, only Forget this network appears.
I'm on 4.3.1 if that helps. Anyone else experiencing this?

I still have 'Ask to Join Networks' on the main Wi-Fi setting screen. If you hit the blue arrow to go into a wireless network though, 'Forget this Network' at the top used to have 'Auto-Join Network' right below it.

  • Now on iOS 6, auto-join on wi-fi won't stay on.

After chaotic ios 6 update, auto- join on wi-fi won't stay on

    found 2 ways:
reset network settings: go to settings>general>reset>reset network settings.  However I didn't do this because I think I would need to re enter all the passwords for the different wifis I use.
    So I used the following:
instead tapping my network name and trying to keep auto-join to yes
    when you are in settings>wifi,
tap "other" and enter the network name. you will have to choose the type of encryption key and enter the password. I just tried WEP type and it worked for me.

hi, if dilbert41's answer didn't work, try pressing on the little bleu arrow next to your wifi name in settings>wi-fi, then press forget this network, then press your wifi name again and type ur password, then check again that 'ask to join networks' is turned off in the bottom of the wi-fi page, and it should normally work

  • Wifi auto-join button gone ?

    I have a iPhone 4s and iPad 2, both on iOS 6.1.3
At home I have my home wifi, and a slower public hotspot from my ISP
On the iPad, I have 2 options in the wifi hotspot settings: auto-join and auto-login.
On my iPhone, these options are not shown.
Both devices use different cellular providers... (Proximus/mobistar)
Is there a possibility to get those 2 options on my iPhone ?
It's annoying that my phone connects to a public network while I have my home network available...
    Thanks,
    Steven

The. I will have to login every time i want to use the hotspot, and that's a lot ! :-)
Thise hotspots are all over the city...
Forgetting the hotspot network and the rejoining it made the buttons appear though...

  • Can my airport express join my network via Belkin Router?

    What's up everyone?
I have a question regarding my apple airport express. Is there any way to get this my airport express to join my belkin network? My current network is being run by my Belkin N Wireless Modem-Router(model# F5D8633au4A)and i can't seem to get my airport to join it properly. Everytime i try to install it, it seems to mess with the signal my laptop gets and the AEX doesn't even connect to the network. The best i've gotten is it shows up on itunes, but i can't select the remote speakers.
For now, i just want my AEX to be able to join wirelessly so i can use airtunes, but would it also be possible to set it up so that i can plug my xbox into it so it can go online?
Anyone have any experience setting up the AEX with a belkin router?

    Hi:
I do not have a Belkin router, but have basically the same problem using a Linksys 54G 802.11n router.
I can setup my HP laptop/printer/router as a wirelss network, but cannot get my AE to join that network as a client, wirelessly. IF, I have an Ethernet cable connected from the router to the AE, I can configure the AE, get the solid green LED on it, etc., and play music out of external speakers, but all falls apart whn I disconnect the Ethernet cable from the router to the AE, even though Airport Utility has things setup as a wireless connection.
Have you tried setting up an Apple ad-hoc network from the PC/laptop to the AE and speakers ? See if you can do that. If so, you can play music wirelessly thru the AE/speakers from iTunes (the LED will be a flashing Amber). The trick is that you have to wait about 1-2 minutes duing the config in order for the AE to establish the connection where it (the ad-hoc network) shows up in your system tray network list, when the icon is clicked. The Appel ad-hoc network will have a name like Apple XXXXXX, where the XXXXXX are 6 (of the 12) digits from the AE's MAC address (listed on its label).
If this works, my guess is that the AE is OK, and the problem is getting your AE to join your already existing Belkin network (in my case, LinkSys network).
I was at one of "Apple Genius Bars" last night probing this problem, and they feel that this is most likely a compatability problem between the AE and non-apple routers...though I do not feel that there should be a problem, or they shouldn't be selling the product claiming that it works with non-apple products.
The guys at Apple suggested that I call Apple for Tech Support at:
    1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273)
There shouldn't be a charge, though the guys at the Genius Bar said that if they try to charge, to raise a big stink over the phone since the
Apple product is not working as claimed !
Another issue: What level of encryption are you using with your router ?
    WEP-64, WEP-128, WPA, WPA2 ???
This greatly affects how easy (or hard) it is to add the AE to your existing network. From what I have learned, the lower the level of encryption, the harder it is to add the AE to the network, since it is an older, less-capatible standard.
Let me know if you find any answers...
