Airport Basestations Offline - Requires Cold Boot - Daily

Hello..
I manage a wifi network consisting of 17 airports, firmware v5.7 and managed via the Windows Airport Application, v4.2
Each day we come in to find some AP's offline, and requiring a cold boot before they can be connected to, either via a client wireless card, or via the configration tool.
While in this state, they do not show up in the configuration tool, and cannot be connected to even when attempting to connect via the IP address of the AP.
NetStumbler will show the AP as being online, and can pick up the AP's MAC address, and also give me details about its encryption, and SNR. But I cannot connect to these AP's at all until that cold boot.
They do not issue DHCP, or utilise NAT, and all are connected to the network via the WAN port so WDS is not involved. MAC ACL's are used to restrict access.
Currently WEP is not enabled. IP's of the AP's are issued from our DHCP server.
AP's are at max power, interference robustness has been tested on/off to no effect, and the channel is Auto.
Today when I went in - 6 of the 17 were online in a functional state, other days it has been 3, and in some cases - they drop out several times during the day.
Does anyone have any ideas at all as to the cause?
Thanks.
Update -
It appears to be the same issue as listed here.

Does anyone have a link to the version of the firmware provide there for the Windows version of the configuration tool?

No help, but I'd like to add my voice to this problem...
I wondered for some time why the base station had been so reliable and then all of a sudden started playing up like this and it's obvioulsy the firmware, so it's really time Apple resolved this issue - obviously they broke it in the first place.
I suspect, like us most people have a 'dead' or 'closed office/school' period each day, so I'd be happy with the ability to schedule an automatic daily restart (based upon the NTP time) until a more permanent solution can be found.

  • On my PC, iTunes 11.0.3.42 causes it to hang when attempting to view a .MOV (1.6GB) requiring a cold boot. What could be causing this?

On my PC running windows XP Service Pack 3, iTunes 11.0.3.42 causes it to hang when attempting to view a .MOV (1.6 GB) requiring a cold boot. What could be causing this? Corrupted .MOV? Too little RAM? It successfully plays a 162 MB .MOV.

    Hello David,
Thank you for providing all that information about the iTunes issue you are experiencing.  We would first want to rule out any software issues before we can determine if it has to do with RAM.  I found an article that will help you isolate and troubleshoot software issues that could be causing iTunes to behave this way:
iTunes for Windows XP: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues

I hope this helps you get back on track with watching movies in iTunes!

  • WRT54GS requires wireless channel re-set after cold boot

    Hi,
I don't like to keep too many electrical appliances running overnight when not in use so turn them off.  However, since last week when I turn my wireless WRT54GS router back on, I cannot get any internet connection (either wireless of hardwired) until I change the wireless channel in the linksys set-up screen.
I can get access to internet at all times if hardwired through the broadband modem.
The firmware on the router is the latest update.
The router has worked more or less fine for about 3 years.
I have reset the router to factory default and completely re-set everything.
If I keep the router permanently turned on - no problem, but I'd rather not keep it on 24/7.  Is there a fix for this or am I looking at a new router?  As the item is just out of Warranty, I am concerned about buying linksys again.
    Thanks in advance,
    Lynnden

Sometimes on a cold boot, the router will have difficulty syncing up with your modem and/or computer.  Some routers are very picky about what order you boot up your devices.  The standard boot order is this:
    1) power up your modem, and allow it to fully boot  (1-5 minutes)
    2) power up your WRT54GS, and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes)
    3) power up your computer
However, some systems will prefer a different order.  For example, my current system requires that I first fully boot up the router, wait a few minutes, then I can power up my modem and computer.  Other boot orders will fail.
So, you should try various ways of booting up your system.   With some trial and error, you will probably be able to find a way to consistantly boot your system successfully.
Alternatively, you should seriously consider leaving your router turned on 24/7.  Your router is designed to be turned on 24/7.  Check the power supply on your router and see how many watts it uses.  It's probably only about 15 watts.  That's about 3 cents a day, the same amount that most people can earn in 10 seconds or less.  So how much is your time worth?

  • I have a 3rd party "TPLink ADSL wireless" router controlling DHCP , Now require Airport Basestation and Timecapule to merely join the existing network. I know this was a work around once posted, but can't find it again? Help....

I have a 3rd party "TPLink ADSL wireless" router controlling Internet and DHCP , Now require my (Airport Basestation and Timecapule) to merely join the existing network. I know this can be done but it was a bit of a work around the automatic setup. The autmatic setup only offers (Create new/WDS/Extend) Does anyone know how to do it, or can point me to the post.
    Many thanks

Unfortunately, I need to connect both devices (Extreme and Timecapsule) via wireless. The ADSL router is not conveniently located to allow me to cable them directly. They are both being used to drive a bank of non networkable printers and external harddrives via the USB ports on each.
My frustration with myself is I had it setup, but failed to record for future, the trick in how to unhide the "join network option". I then had a failed firmware update from Apple and then needed to reset the routers and bang the settings were gone.
The Security setting is not an issue I know those I am using WPA2 personal.
I would be grateful for the wireless setup if you have it handy...
    Thanks do much

    Hi, Wobble Woo.
The repeated kernel panic you're experiencing is a common issue on the mid-2010 MacBook Pro 15". I have the same laptop and the same issue. It's caused by the descrete graphics card. One solution, albeit a bit disappointing and temporary, is to use an application called gfxCardStatus. It runs in the statusbar and tells you which GPU is running. You can use the application to set your laptop to use the integrated GPU only, which will put an end to your kernel panics. But if you are using applications which require heavy graphics (such as photoshop and most video games), you'll just have to count your luck.
Some other users have had their motherboard successfully replaced. Take it to an Apple Store and ask them to run a GPU test. They should find the error (a manufacture defect, it seems) and replace your motherboard, with or without warranty. I hope this helps.

  • 2006 Mac Pro Cold Boot Failure

    Hi all,
I have problems with 2006 Mac Pro. It fails cold boot at 100%, first thing in the morning only. So I'm seeking expert advice.
    The spec is,
    Xeon 5355 2.66GHz x2 (Octo cores)
    ATI Radeon 5770(Apple Genuine)
    8GB Memory(4x1GB kingston, 4x1GB OWC)
    500GBx2 1TBx2 HDDs
I disassembled and cleaned PSU and Fans, reapplying thermal pastes on CPUs and North Bridge a month ago.
Then I booted, system froze at desktop, so I shut it down, reset PRAM & SMC. it booted normally but the upper riser card wasn't detected at all. I cleaned the slot contact and reseated DIMM modules. It was detected after that.
Everything worked fine for a few days but then I got random kernel panics, reseated RAM, reinstalled Snow Leopard but still got random kernel panics. Then ran AHT for a couple of hours and got an error code 4MEM/6....
I contacted OWC and they sent me a new set of memory modules. While waiting for the replacement, no kernel panics at all but DVD drive died as well as IDE cable, so I replaced both.
I got the replacement RAM but past a week, MP fails cold boot every morning. Below is what's happening...
    (1) With Kingston Memory, CPU B error LED is lit, I press SYS_RST, one of DIMM LED is then lit (always DIMM A1). Or sometimes, Power-LED is blinking.
    (2) With OWC memory, boots normally, then kernel panic within a few minutes.
    (3) With OWC memory, CPU B error LED is lit, I press SYS_RST, one of DIMM LED is then lit (always DIMM B1)
*(1) with new and old riser cards
*(3) after replaced 2 riser cards
Replacing riser cards didn't help. After these happen, I shut down by pressing power button for seconds and it boots normally without a hitch. Never get kernel panics nor system freeze. It means when it warms up, MP just works just like it should.
    Replaced so far,
    -- IDE cable (Apple Genuine)
    -- DVD drive (Optiarc AD-7200A)
    -- 4GB (1GBx4) OWC memory
    -- RTC battery CR2032
    -- 2 riser cards
Is the logic board dead or PSU or memory modules are still bad?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I have a Mac Pro dual 2.8 ghz quad core, circa 2008. Recently, I have been required to depress the power button to end a failed cold boot, then press again to boot, usually with success.
Every hard restart freeze, and can guarantee you end up with
corrupt caches, corrupt file system, corrupt directory.
Safe Boot is not effective in such cases, fsck from single user mode has a better chance.
Booting from another hard drive, install your bought copy of Alsoft Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory (it has deep scavenge files also).
The longer you continue to do just Safe Boot and continue using it, the more trouble and less likelihood of being able to repair the drive.
SMART is not smart enough, it tells you about the past, not what could likely happen, or if you have had bad sectors and I/O errors.
Have bootable backup clones and a drive that is a clean Apple OS and drivers that isn't used except for repairs and maintenance. Don't rely on just Apple Disk Repair.

  • Mac Pro cold boot failure rate at 50%

I have a Mac Pro dual 2.8 ghz quad core, circa 2008. Recently, I have been required to depress the power button to end a failed cold boot, then press again to boot, usually with success.
I do hear a chime, but in the failed situation, it never progresses to the login screen.
I've reset the pram a few times, this doesn't seem to fix anything, as the system always boots if you try enough times (knock on wood).
I've verified the s.m.a.r.t. status and the disk, it all reports back as fine.
I am writing this post from a "safe boot" hope to see if that works on the next cold boot.
Other posts on this forum suggest it may be a weak pram battery so I will try that, the computer is getting on in years. However a similar post on this forum was marked as answered because the problem reported stated it did not chime from the external speakers. I don't care about that! So here's a new thread about documenting and hopefully solving the actual problem.

  • Intermittent freezes upon cold boot

    Greetings gurus,
I've been experiencing intermittent freezes on cold boot since a few weeks. I did not have them on 10.5.4. I've only had 4 freezes and according to the CrashReporter log all are identical, as far as I can tell. I have not installed any new hardware and I have only one external thing connected and that's a Sennheiser USB headset. I'm unable to tell if all leave identical messages in other logs however.
The *CrashReporter log* for the four occasions says that the process which broke is *coreservicesd [43]*. On each occasion, it is said that "Thread 0" crashed. This is how the beginning of that log reads (from the crash earlier today):
    *Process: coreservicesd [43]*
    *Path: /System/Library/CoreServices/coreservicesd*
    *Identifier: coreservicesd*
    *Version: ??? (???)*
    *Code Type: X86 (Native)*
    *Parent Process: launchd [1]*
    *Date/Time: 2009-01-19 20:33:26.618 +0100*
    *OS Version: Mac OS X 10.5.5 (9F33)*
    *Report Version: 6*
    *Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGBUS)*
    *Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE at 0x0000000000000000*
    *Crashed Thread: 0*
    The symptoms are:
+ *Menu bar* is invisible (can make out language flag, airport and bluetooth icons and bottom of menu bar).
+ Finder is unresponsive (can't open folders on the desktop and their icons are gone but not their names - relaunching the Finder does not help).
+ Applications won't launch from the Dock.
+ I can access the Restart, Sleep, Shutdown dialog box by pressing the off button on my ACD, but the Shutdown button doesn't work.
+ Holding the power button will not always force shutdown, but seems to put the computer in some sort of sleep mode (when pressing the button again the desktop will appear "greyed" out and a white progress bar will display).
As it doesn't happen upon every cold boot I haven't been able to use the Verbose mode. I have done the following:
+ Trashed the plists of Finder and Dock
    + Fixed permissions in DU
+ Left it unplugged from the mains for a whole day
    + Reset PRAM/NVRAM
+ Using Onyx, deleted the caches under Cleaning - System and Cleaning - User (radical perhaps?)
+ Turned off all login items (AppTrap, Gmail Notifr, Fuzzy Clock, Skype)
+ Run Apple Hardware Test, normal and extended, with no errors found
+ Verified boot disk in DU while booted from the installation disk: no errors
I tried a Safe Boot but it froze. However, it does not freeze every time.
When it froze this evening, I found loads of the following message in Console-All Messages:
*WindowServer[51] LaunchServices/5123589: coreservicesd is running an unsupported version, 0 ( we are 10500000 ), so we cannot talk to it.*
Many of them are prefaced by loginwindow[23] instead of WindowsServer.
Below are the messages in Console-Console messages from the latest time that it froze (all of the messages). There's some talk about com.apple.UserEventAgent-Aqua which I don't understand.
When it says that a "thread" crashes, could it be hardware-related (i.e. the processors)? But should not AHT have caught that? Or is it some corruption in the system? I have backups and clones so I'm not worried about losing data. I'm more concerned about the hardware.
Any thoughts and ideas would be helpful.

Actually, doing the following would probably fix everything; at least it has fixed every issue I have ever had.
If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility for the repair. I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy. Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand.
If you have a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, an Erase and Install may also rid you of this issue. But, beware! You will lose everything on the drive with this procedure. Let us know if you need help with that!
     Luck! DALE
p.s. by Thomas Bryant '''' from a previous post.
Diskwarrior is a "must have" utility and it's corrected any weird problem I've ever encountered. Anytime I have to do a forced shutdown etc. I run DW to get the directories back in tip top shape. Directory problems cause strange issues and often over the course of several weeks or months the little problems add up to finally a major problem. Tom

  • IPad revert to preconfigured saved state on cold boot?

We're looking to create a saved state for all the apps and OS settings for our many iPads that would reset automatically on a cold boot. Apple Configurator seems to require too much finagling. We're just looking for some kind of scripted solution that could recall our preconfigured settings for each iPad, restoring it to our business's preferred "pristine" condition whenever the iPad is started from a fully off state.
I've searched for this everywhere online, but I'm not finding what seems like a very common need for a business that relies on iPads.
Thanks in advance for any resources/apps/info you can provide!

Is it the same keyboard you tried on all occassions?
Sometimes there is a little gap, when the I/O-port metal bracket is not in properly.
Have you tried PS2 mouse and keyboard? Is there any mentioning of this in Device Manager.
Windows is keen on having USB-things hot-plugged, while that is totally wrong for PS2-things.

  • Reboot when cold booting

    Hi.
I encrypted my MBP harddrive with the new FileVault feature. Recently my MBP developed an issue where it would hang a while on the spinner when cold booting, then just reboot - and then boot just fine.
This requires me to type in my decryption password two times. Doesn't seem healthy. I tried restoring file permissions from Disk Utility but this didn't help.
Do you know what is causing this and perhaps how I could fix it?
    Jorijn

It seems to be a problem with paralles desktop.

  • WCS Access Point Reboot versus Cold Boot

I'm aware of the process an LWAP AP goes through when a cold boot is performed, specifically dealing with 1130 access points. I've noticed that when using the reboot command in WCS, the process is much shorter than a cold boot (unplugging the AP from power and network and then plugging everything back in).
So the question is - what is the difference between the reboot command in WCS and performing a cold boot? Does the AP retain some information during a reboot and therefore not require as much time to boot up?
    Thanks for any help...

You can restart the access point by one of the following mehtods
    1. Remove the power and replug the power cable
    2. Using the CLI in the ap prompt type boot command. i.e [ap:boot]
    3. In the Web interface use the System Configuration Setup page to restart the access point. Click Warm Restart System Now to perform a warm restart of the access point. A warm restart reboots the access point. Click Cold Restart System Now to perform a cold restart of the access point. A cold restart is the equivalent of removing and then reapplying power for the access point.

  • MSI G33M-FI and MSI 9600GT OC cold boot problem

So I just recently put together my new computer (MSI G33M-FI motherboard) and whenever I shut it down and turn it on the computer will turn off in about 3 seconds (you won't see the bios screen) and then it just turns on and off endlessly/ in a loop.
Fix is to clear CMOS and it will boot ok but whenever I turn it off (no restart..) the problem is back!, only clear CMOS helps...
Good thing I found the problem, the videocard (MSI 9600GT OC). When I switch it with my poorly ATI 1950pro I have no problem with a cold boot.
Using the latest bios version with the motherboard (on the MSI site). Havent flashed my 9600GT 512mb (red double slot cooler version) with a another bios yet though.. (if there is 1, just checked- no new bios).
Anyone got an idea how to fix this? I don't think so but maybe they should make a new bios to fix this?
Other parts from computer: Patriot extreme 4 gig (2x2) ddr2 performance (4-4-4-12, 2.2 volt) and an intel e8400 cpu.
Anyone else having this problem? Thanks...

I had cold-boot problems with my G33M-FI.  Tried E2140 and Q6600 CPUs at stock voltages/clocks, tried two different sets of DDR2-800 RAM (4x1GB and 4x2GB), tried different CMOS batteries and tried two different power supplies (Thermaltake and Coolermaster 500W supplies).  Regardless of combination of components, system would frequently fail to POST.  Problems were experienced with integrated video (no add-on cards installed) and with/without any drives connected.  Problems were also experienced with a single good stick of RAM in slot 1 vs. all four slots populated.  Once booted, the system performed flawlessly passing memtest86+ and other reliability/stability tests.  Once the system failed to boot, it would almost never boot again until I cleared the BIOS (sometimes requiring me to remove and reinsert the CMOS battery, since the jumper alone didn't cure the problem).  Trial and error of different hardware combinations in an attempt to isolate the problem with a CMOS clear/recovery between attempts proved to be a very painful and tedious process.  After speaking with MSI tech support, solution was to RMA the board.

  • Z68A-GD80 B3 Random cold boot issues

No mater if system is set to optimized defaults or Overclocked I randomly get odd boot behavior ranging from slow boots to no boots
    Symptoms:
delays at post on blank screen with exception of "A2" and or "B3" displayed in the bottom right hand side of the screen.
Generally after stops looking for a floppy to boot to, which makes no sense at all there is not even a floppy header or bios option to disable.
I can have three days in a row with no boot issues at all.
Note: PC and all peripherals are connected to My Tripp Lite 1200w UPS which is connected to a dedicated 20 amp circuit with hospital grade receptacle.
I have the board speaker attached to the board to broadcast the beep codes.
When a good boot happens I hear three beeps and a final short beep all in fairly quick succession.
During a failed post the beeps come slower with a greater duration between beeps and one less beep
Sometimes it sounds like 5 beeps in total but that is with a good post 4 quick beeps and a final marginally longer beep.
Since their is no post code display with this board I'm left with wondering what these beeps mean on the Z68 boards.
Also of note the Corsair H70 CPU cooler I have attached to the mobo CPU header for the pump and the Mobo fan 2 header for the H70 fans, so I can monitor the RPMs start very slowly not unlike a jet turbine begins slowly and gradually builds momentum. I only mention this because it does not act this way on other boards I have tried the cooler. Especially when bios setting were set properly which bring me to what I have tried to resolve the situation.
I've been able to stabilize the board with OC genie and manually at 4.8, 4.7, and 4.6 MHz with 1600 and 1866 memory speeds. To be clear I consider, 20 pass max mem of LinX, 10 hrs prime 95 w/o error and 200% coverage HCI design Memtest (two instances "usable" and "all remaining") with no errors stable.
Further more I've been able to stabilize Turbo Boost at x49 1core, x48 2cores, x47 3cores and x46 4cores with little more than a Vcore adjustment away from default settings.
The issue remains intermittent cold boot issues.
I haven't had a system pass these test and have cold boot issues since the NF2 days.
    What I've tried:
bumping Vcore way past minimum required to boot to any given clock down to 4.2 (1.2v)
bumping CPU I/O same as above
    running at default
    running at default with XMP
running default manually set RAM timings and volts
running with the above with EuP 2013 disabled
    Smart Fan disabled and enabled
disable a boot devices except actual boot drive
tried two different Corsair 850 watt PSU.
    Questions:
What are the beep codes for this board?
When will we see a bios update to fix the multiple UEFI interface problems and possibly this issue as well?
I thought I bought an enthusiast motherboard yet RPMs from motherboard fan headers are only monitored 1&2 headers.
I use Aida64 Extreme to monitor temps and voltages but conspicuously missing are things like VTT, SA and PLL voltages and the temps for same.
    Is this normal?
are they lacking sensors on this board?
or do I have a defective board?
    Final Q
When Aida64 is running CPUz current an previous version will not run on this board. I have spoken to the developer of CPUz Franck and Aida and for the moment it seems to be related to this board only but the failure is consistent even after format and reload. CPUz and Aida64 are known to work/coexist on similar Z68 boards. So my question is, Is this a known issue for this board?
Amendment to the system specs below
I have two opt drives attached to the SataIII (white) headers in AHCI mode the Blue Ray drive is not discoverable in IDE mode. Blue Sata ports 3,4 are configured in a Raid-0 array and 5 & 6 have WD 640 Caviar Blk drives respectively port 7 is empty.

My apologies for posting this in the wrong section. Can a mod move it to the appropriate forum. TY

  • PowerBook G3 PDQ Loses Startup Disk on Cold Boot

    I have a PowerBook G3 PDQ (266Mhz, 192MB RAM).
For the longest time it's had Mac OS X 10.1 on it, along with Mac OS 9.2.2.
I always noticed that it started up with Mac OS 9 after a cold boot, even if the startup disk was set for the OS X system folder.
So, I reformatted the disk and re-installed OS X 10.1 (being the only version of OS X i own that will run on the machine). Everything ran fine.
But after a cold boot, it lost the startup disk, and i get the flashing question mark on a floppy disk. I can hear the hard disk spin up, then down, then up, then down. Eventually the machine shuts off. I have to boot off a Mac OS 9 CD and select the OS X system folder to make it boot again.
Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks.

Like S.U. I replaced the PRAM battery on two Wallstreets (got batteries from OWC) and, although I'm very nervous about working with tiny parts, I found it to go well by following the iFixit instruction to the letter. The innards weren't nearly as fragile as I expected and I allowed plenty of time so I wouldn't feel compelled to rush.
The most serious issue I encountered was that the original battery's cable on one WS managed to get snagged under the metal battery bracket when the computer was originally assembled. This compounded the problem that the user--a cigarette smoker--had inadvertently melted the plastic between the trackpad and the front edge of the upper case. This made the case weak at that point and I had to be very careful in dislodging the stuck cable.
I had mentally made the job much more difficult than it turned out to be. Just have the right tools:
    1) You may find that, to remove the heat shied screw--requires a Philips #0 screwdriver--you may need to shorten the point of the driver to better fit the shallow cuts in the screw head. The screw is soft and can easily strip out if you indiscreetly use an unmodified #0 Philips.
    2) Have an old ice cube tray or egg carton handy to keep the screws sorted.

  • For people having POST problems (long IDE detection) on Cold Boot with K8N Neo 2

It's been 2 weeks that I'm looking for the root of this particular problem.
I've found today how to get rid of it. Try this if you haven't already :
In BIOS root screen, activate the hidden settings (Press SHIFT+F2 and ALT+F3 rapidly)
Then go to the Cell Menu and disable NV/ATI Speedup feature.
Save your settings, turn off your comp.
Restart and check with cold boots
    Sweep

I have a worse variation of this problem (but also the startup IDE freezing that fixes with Alt-Ctl-Del), that I discovered while trying to boot from an ME CD or from a WinME Floppy boot disc when and only when I tell it to load support for CD-Rom going into DOS.  It freezes when it gets just past detecting the IDE, requiring a cold boot reset.
If I boot off the WinME CD or a floppy boot disk, and don't choose CD-ROM support I can get to the A: drive with RAM C drive to be able to flash the BIOS (which I did up to 1.3, after which I reset the CMOS jumper).  The problem persists with the new MOBO 1.3 BIOS.
I made sure the IDE-2 ribbon was connected properly, and even tried changing the jumper from master to cable select on the Plextor DVD burner....still locks up when I boot to DOS with CD Rom support enabled.
My next step was to disconnect the IDE cable from the Plextor so the drive was not the issue, and it still freezes if I choose CD Support from Boot disk.
I next removed the CMOS battery (which btw, will require you to call MS to reactivate XP), checked the voltage with a battery tester, replaced it, cleared CMOS jumper again, use mostly default BIOS settings except disabled SATA, and the same damn problem.
My friend, Triple6 in this same thread has the identical setup except different RAM, different nVidia 6800 Ultra Video card  and he does not have the same bootup  issue.  We checked the same BIOS settings.
I'm beginning to wonder if I have a bad MOBO that won't allow me to boot off a floppy with CD-ROM enabled.  Very Strange!
