Airport Card Can't Be Removed

Hello!
I would like to pull the airport card out of my PowerBook G4 laptop.
There are two clear plastic square feet glued right in front of the wireless card which prevent me from pulling out the card. I can't find any card removal instructions that address these two plastic squares. It's like someone snuck these buggers into my computer or something.
Please help!
Thanks!

Haha, yah, far too many computer gnomes sneaking about around here...
I was afraid I was going to have to get a little medieval on my lappy and pry off those clear plastic squares. I just wanted to be sure first that they weren't there for a good reason or that there was some alternate way I was supposed to remove the airport card. It appears I'm just gunna have to pop the little warty things off and be done with them.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
In AirPort Utility how is your AirPort Extreme configured in the AirPort panel, Wireless tab, Radio Mode list? If it's set to 802.11n only the AirPort card in your G5 probably doesn't support that.

  • Airport card can see networks but can't connect all of a sudden

I have an older MacBook running 10.6.8 (snow leopard) and it's been working fine. All of a sudden, it can see networks, but cannot connect. I get an alert with an exclamation point and "no Internet connection". My iPad can connect just fine; same network, same location as usual, so I know it's not an issue with the network/router (my husband's computer works fine as well). If my airport card went, I wouldn't be able to see any networks at all, right?  Is there anything I can do?  My AppleCare has run out, due to the age of my computer and I don't want to put hundreds into fixing it, either (nor can I afford it). Has anyone had this happen?  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

  • Basic Airport card can't connect to Wi-Fi using WPA encryption

I have a Powerbook Pismo 500mhz using OS 9.2.2 and Airport 2.0.4 software with a basic Airport card installed in it. For over a month I was able to connect to my resorts wi-fi network by putting in there Key 1 password and I was connected just fine. The other day they changed the password and upgraded there software from WEP to WPA, Now no matter what I do I can't get it to accept my password. The password is 24 letters long and every time I enter it I get "An error occurred while trying to join the selected airport network" .
I have tried everything from putting the password in quotes, to starting it with $, to even using Wep Key maker. In fact they call it a PassPhrase, not a Password. There is no options to change the encryption with Airport 2.0.4. I have looked all over the net and this is my last resort. Please help. If you wish you can email me directly at [email protected]

I've been having horribly similar problems trying to get my Mac to join up with a non-Apple Wi-Fi network running WPA.
I suspect you are probably entering the WPA password into the old WEP password field on your Powerbook. If you are, that will never work. You need to have the system asking you for a WPA password not a WEP one, and if you're software isn't current you won't be given the option.
Try this - you need to get your OS level and airport drivers much more current. I was experiencing the same error message as you when I was on OSX 10.3, which I have a feeling is the first level of OSX that properly supports WPA. Move up to 10.4 if you can. Also get the latest Airport drivers installed. Henry B may be able to give you the link, or you will find it embedded in another post.
If you are as unlucky as me you may find that even this doesn't fix your problem. I'm now getting the message that my password is not accepted - a step forward but not a cure.
If you do manage to get it going (and all advice is that the OSX upgrade and new drivers usually do the trick), let me know what your fix was!
By the way, things also seem to work better if you have your SSID broadcast by the Access Point.

  • MacOSX 10.3.8 system with original Airport card can't connect via WPA/WPA2

    Hi all,
My WiFi network consists of an Airport Express running a WPA/WPA2 Personal network and 802.11b/g compatibility, upon which 3 Macs (all with Airport Extreme/G or /Draft-N cards) and 2 PCs (both G compatible) merrily connect to.
I have an old PowerMac G4 which I've just fitted with an original non-Extreme Airport card, and having updated MacOSX 10.3.8 with Airport 4.2 to enable WPA access, it still refuses to connect to the network; I get the "There was an error joining the Airport network ..." when the correct password is entered.
My understanding is that while the old Airport cards don't support WPA2, they do support WPA and thus if the Airport Express network is set to WPA/WPA2 and b/g compatibility (which I'm assuming is some kind of all encompassing compatibility mode, given there's also sole WPA2 options) then it shouldn't have any problems connecting to the network. What am I missing here?
    Cheers, Ben.

I am having the exact same problem. Powerbook G4; original factory installed airport card; with Panther 10.3.9 OS plus updated 4.2 Airport Admin. Utility. It will NOT connect to my Airport Express set to the WPA/WPA2, which is working fine with my iPod touch.
When I get to the screen requesting password for my chosen airport network ("Wireless Security: WPA Personal), the "OK" button is grayed out and it will not even let me submit a password to connect. Can somebody help?

  • Which Airport card can I install in my iBook?

    Hi.
I have a 12in iBook early 2004 model (1.07 GHz). Now I want to buy and install an Airport card. Can I use an Airport Extreme card on this computer or do I need to get an earlier version of the Airport card? The web site says: 'The AirPort Extreme Card can be installed only in computers that are AirPort Extreme ready. AirPort Extreme Cards cannot be used in AirPort-ready computers with an AirPort Card slot'.
Basically, which airport card is compatible with my iBook? I have not found any info on this web site.
    Thanks,
    Oskar

All iBook G4's (except of course those that come with the wireless interface factory-installed) use the Apple Airport Extreme card.

  • Airport card can't detect wireless network

I just installed a new Airport Card (bought thru 3rd party seller) in my Powermac G4/933 and it won't see my wireless network. I have a Belkin wireless router and my Powerbook G4 with Airport Extreme sees the network fine. Is the old style Airport Card not compatible with my network for some reason? Any help appreciated.

Do you have your Belkin configured so that it will not broadcast the SSID? If so, you will need to go to the AirPort menu, select "Other..." and type in the name of the network.
Also ensure that your Belkin is operating in an 802.11b compatible mode.

  • MBP disabled airport card - can't enable.

I've been having issues connecting to networks for the last few hours. At first all the laptops in our apartment(all non-macs aside from my MBP) were able to connect and only my mac was having difficulties. When I checked my system prefs my airport connection was labeled as connected with a self-assigned IP. I searched for solutions and was pointed towards resetting my nvram. I did so following apples guidelines (reboot with command-option-P-R depressed). That has made things worse.
My airport is now listed in the system profiler as being turned off yet when I go to system preferences and turn it on its still labeled as off in the profiler. Attempting to connect to networks from this stage results in a 'connection failed' message. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Genius bar technician resolved the issue. Read problem between apple airport card and software.

  • Airport card can not see network.

I have recently moved. I had no issues with the my network on my G5. We moved, I bought an Airport Extreme and set it up through Qwest DSL. My G4 laptop, my iphone, my roommates G4 laptop and his dell laptop all successfully see and login into our network just fine. However my G5 doesn't see any network available. Like I said, in our old spot, everything was fine. Any Suggestions? Thanks in advance.
    Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme
    Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware Version: 405.1 (3.90.34.0.p18)
Current Wireless Network: wireless network not available

I've been experiencing similar difficulties with connecting to my wireless router and dropping signal connections.
It almost seems to be in the same vein as SCSI voodoo. One day it works and another it doesn't.
One thing that seems to reduce the problems is to use only WEP protocol. I have rarely been able to connect using any of the stronger schemes, although my wife and daughter using pro laptops have few problems with connections.
My G5 does not have an external antenna, which I suspect is part of the problem.

  • Ibook G-3 with old airport card can't see New Airport Extreme Base Station

I have been trying for a week now to get my G-3 ibook set up on my Airport Extreme Network. No matter what I do, I can't sign on to the network. When I put in the password I get an error message 3151. I have no idea what this means. I have read everything, restarted base, changed network password, trashed all airport and prefs on G-3 and reinstalled. Although my network shows up in the control strip, it doesn't show in the setup assistant. Please help if you can, I'm about to go crazy! Thanks.

Dear Duane, I did have 802.11b configured, but I had the WPA instead of WEP enabled. When I reconfigured my network, the clamshell was instantly able to join and use the network. I have many many questions about how to use the network to allow both computers to communicate, but I'll read up on it and I'm sure the answers will be there. You saved me $240.00 for the 1st hour and $160.00 for anything over that Techserve was going to charge me to come and set it up. I can't thank you enough. Everyone tells me not to waste money, but to save for a new ibook with System X, but I love my old clamshell and I'm going to get it a bigger hard drive so it can be upgraded to run OS X. It's the old 4 Gb one. I can't thank you enough for your solution! Now I can work on the laptop in my bedroom! I love Mac stuff and I knew the Extreme base station would work, regardless of what all the posters have been saying.

Actually it sounds like a bad pref or two.
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, move these files to the Desktop.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.networkConnect.<12 digit number>.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
(You'll need to Trash the originals of these following ones since move only copies them)
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.networkConfig.plist
    Then reboot once more.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Can the Airport Card just go bad?

My MacBook finds the wireless network from my router but won't join it when i tell it to. I have accessed the internet directly from my cable modem. I have tried accessing other wireless networks at friends houses to no avail. I haven't run the Apple hardware test yet. Is it possible that the internal airport card has gone bad and just isnt receiving the signal from the router?

    Hi
Just like any other electronic component, an airport card can go bad. However, it's more likely that you're yet another victim of the unexplained wireless connection problem which is plaguing MacBooks. A quick survey of this forum will find many similar posts to yours

  • Original Airport cards and e-Bay

I have a 17inch flat panel iMac, 800 mhz speed and am thinking of going wireless. I know I need an original airport card for my computer, NOT the airport extreme. I have been searching on e-Bay and found various sellers with a huge difference in prices. My question is: are there different models of the original airport card? One vendor lists an airport card model # M7600LL/A for a high price, but in the information it lists my computer as one of the models this card will work with. Another vendor has an airport card model # M7600LL/E for a much lower price but the information on the card's compatability is rather sparse. Are they the same card just with a different price? What is your advice about buying an airport card from e-Bay in general? I will also need a wireless router and have my eye on a Linksys model that a few of my friends have in their wireless networks and they recommend it highly. Any thoughts on that area?
17 inch Flat panel iMac, 800mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Basically the difference between the two is one was for American market I believe and the other the European market.
    Both should work fine.

A Mac with an original Airport card can connect to any wifi certified 802.11b wireless network (or 802.11g in backward compatible mode).
Out of all the different wireless routers I have used, I have found my Airports to be reliable and easy to setup.

  • Airport card compatiblility

    hey,
just bought the new mac pro xeon 2.66. and wonder if i can use the airport card that was on my old machine, a power pc g4 titanium laptop. (it´s an airport card not an airport extreme one but i kept updating the software... don´t know if it makes any difference...).
    help!
    thanks!
    ; ) anne

    Hello Anne-Laure,
This is the iPhone forum. You may have better luck with your Mac Pro inquires in the Mac Pro forum.
To quickly answer your question the Airport card for the Mac Pro was specifically designed for that computer model meaning any previous airport card models can not be installed in the Mac Pro computer and the Mac Pro's airport card can not be installed in a different Apple computer model. Also the Mac Pro's airport card is extermemly difficult to install yourself and therefore must be installed by an Apple service technician during manufacture.
    Hope this helps you out!

  • Airport card for a Powerbook G4 and DVD hardware upgrade

Hi all, my sister has Powerbook G4 titanium onyx model # 48407 and needs to find an airport card and have it installed. Can you advise us where she can look to purchase one. Apparently apple nolonger makes them.
Also, our second question is: Can a DVD player be installed also. If so, where can she locate one.
    Here are her machines specs:
    Machine Model: PowerBook G4
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 667 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
    Memory: 512 MB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.2.6f1
    Serial Number: QT1470P6KVB
    Sales Order Number: Z03Y00RSA

These products are available, although I would think hard about the expense considering the value of the computer, even more so if you pay for installation.
The old original Airport cards can be found at many used parts dealers like iFixit:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Products/Titanium-Onyx/Wireless/43/25
Remember that these are 802.11b only, not the newer G or any other variant of Wifi, but it would still work on all common wifi networks. It also will not do the better WPA encryption, only the old minimal WEP encryption. Installation is not difficult (iFixit has excellent instructions), or you'll have to find a shop to install it.
You can get wifi cards that use the PC card slot, but last time I looked, it was a nightmare figuring out which ones were compatible.
The optical drive can be replaced with a combo (plays DVDs) or Superdrive (burns DVDs) from places like MCE or OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/superdrives/powerbook/
    http://store.mcetech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&StoreCode=MTOS&CategoryCode=SVCPBG4
Oh, there is a specific titanium section of these forums you should try, as these for the aluminum G4.
