Airport Card for G3 to use on current Airport Express Network

I have a G4 PowerBook, a gray G4, and most recently a hand-me-down blue (green?) G3. I have an Airport Express that the two G4s use for wireless internet. I'd like to add an airport extreme OR old airport card to the G3 to include it in our home network wirelessly as well. Can this be done? What, exactly, do I need?

Hello Owen,
Yes, but the Antenna is built-in. Alternative if it doesn't have an Airport card right now...

It's possible to run as high as 10.5.8 on it.
Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
    *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
minimum system requirements
    * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
    * DVD drive for installation
    * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

  • Airport card for powerbook G4 12" Aluminum

I have a powerbook G4 12" aluminum and I have looked everywhere for an airport card. I have gotten two original airport cards and they did not fit, these cards are just a smidge too wide for the card slot. I know there is an apple card that will fit it because it had one installed at one point. I do recall a comment that there was a "small" airport card for the 12" aluminum but I have had no success in locating one. Can someone please help?

Yes, you could, but sometimes those people charge more than Apple does for its refurbished ones. And Apple's comes with a one-year warranty, while the eBay people usually don't, unless it's an eBay storefront seller. (Whatever they're called).
So, use your best judgment. Coming from me who buys things on eBay a lot, I'm not saying eBay is bad. But just comparing the two ($29 with a one-year warranty and straight from Apple, versus whatever price on eBay, same/higher/less than Apple's price, but possibly without warranty, etc., in this case, Apple would be the best bet).

Just looked over at eBay and did a search for "Airport Extreme Card" and the prices for Buy It Now range from $24.00 to $40.00. Current bids for those that are bid-only range from $0.99 to $18.00. So $29 from Apple isn't bad at all. (I do not work for Apple, by the way).

  • Which Airport Card for a Power MAC G4 w/400mhz?

    Hello Everyone!
Sorry to be a bother but I'm new to the forum & need some help. I'm currently upgrading my Power Mac G4 w/400 mhz & I'm looking to go wireless. I've been looking for the best product to do this but I've become a bit confused. Did Apple make an airport card for my particular model? When I go into the specs, it shows that the system is airport compatible but I do not know which component to use. Can anyone help me out with this one?
    Thanks,
    Rick

Did Apple make an airport card for my particular model?
That computer takes the original AirPort card or a PCI card or external component which provides wireless access. The AirPort Extreme card is incompatible with it.

  • Airport card for my g4 adp tower... I can't get it to work.

I'm not very good with computers (when it comes to technical support). And I recently purchased an original airport card for my computer. I also burned the downloads onto a disc so that I would have the software. My computer has an operating system of 10.3.5. I downloaded the driver, turned off my computer, insterted the card and it pops up with an error that says it can't find the airport base station. What is this and do I need to buy something else for my computer? My internet connection is Comcast wireless. Any suggestions, thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read through a computer illiterates post...

It sounds like you are trying to run either the Airport Setup Assistant or the Airport Admin Utility - and since this software is only of use to Airport Base Station owners (which you are not) this software is of no use to you.
If your Airport card has been properly installed, you will see a fan-shaped icon near the right side of the MacOS menu bar - that is the Airport menu. Click on it, and a list of all in-range wireless networks will appear. The name of the wireless router supplied by Comcast should appear there - click on that name to connect to it. With some luck you will now get an internet connection.
If there are no wireless networks displayed when you click on the Airport menu, recheck the installation of your Airport card - you probably forgot to attach the internal Airport antenna cable to its connector on the Airport card.

  • What airport card for MDD

I haven't looked inside, but do I need the old airport card for my MDD SP 1.25? I think it does not accept an extreme card....thought I read that only the models with 800 fw will work with the extreme card.
If anyone can confirm this, I'd appreciate it.....thanks

The Motorola WPCI810G 802.11g Wireless PCI Adapter is what I use and it works great in 10.3.9 with Airport Software 4.1, updating to the latest 4.2 Airport Software will "break" it. Then I believe there was a 4.3 update that claimed to fix the cards that were broken by the 4.2 update but it didn't take.
This happened to me but luckily I just reverted to a cloned copy of my system that had 4.1 on it.
I do vaguely recall it working in 10.3.7 but I'm not 100% sure on that.
    Hope this helps.

  • 'no airport card installed' when I cllick on the Airport Icon - any software fixes?

'no airport card installed' when I cllick on the Airport Icon - any software fixes?

I would start by running the Apple Hardware Test directly from the Installation CD that came with your MBP.

    Please post back your results.

  • Override Ethernet to Use Airport Card for Internet

I just installed an Airport card in G4 Quicksilver 2002.
I want to use a separate (not on my network) Linksys wireless airport to go on the internet,
But as long as my ethernet is connected to the G4, my internet goes out my ethernet.
Is there a way to force my internet connection to use the Linksys wireless (without unhooking my ethernet cable)?
Also, is there a way to be using the Linksys wireless on the internet, and make my HP 4001n print through my ethernet?

You can try changed the order of the network ports in the Network preferences Network Port Configurations screen. If you drag the Airport configuration to the top of the list it is supposed to become the first priority port.
You can also shut off the ethernet port from this pane without actually disconnecting the cable.

  • Which Airport Card for 1 1/2 Yr Old Emac

I have a new roommate who bought an Emac a year and a half ago. We have a wireless hub for internet access. Apple says that the "new" Airport card will not work on this computer and they don't sell the "Old One".
So, what is the model of the old one and where do you get it? Is Apple after sales support always this difficult?

    Hi
The first generation of eMac (700/800MHz, 100MHz bus) uses the original Airport card. All newer and faster eMacs use the current Extreme card. Your roommate can check their specs through the Apple menu - About This Mac - More Info - and check the speed and system bus size.
If it's the original eMac, you can try links through lowendmac.com to try and find the Airport card.

  • What's the best Airport card for a Quicksilver Mac?

Way back in 2001/2002 when I bought my Quicksilver (dual-gigahertz), wireless stuff was pretty new. I didn't have any routers and there was no need for an Airport card. Over the next year or two, I started to accumulate more computers and roommates with computers. As it so happens, the very day I came back from a several week-long job and decided to finally purchase an Airport, that was the very same day of the Mac Conference and Steve Jobs introduced a fancy new Airport Extreme that had the new 802.11g technology. Well, needless to say, my order took a little longer than forever to arrive, and when it did, I found that they had accidentally sent me an Airport Extreme Base Station instead of the normal Airport Base Station that I ordered (802.11b). However, they did not accidentally send me an 802.11g card for my Quicksilver.
So, for years now, I've been using my Mac with a 802.11b card in it. For the rare times that I've had to transfer a significant amount of files between computers (and I didn't have an external drive that I could swap back and forth) I'd usually just leave the computer on overnight because it takes an extraordinarily long time to transfer at 802.11b speeds.
Now, I've recently purchased an Apple TV. It's constantly syncing up movies and video podcasts and now the difference between the 802.11b and 802.11g speeds are becoming more and more noticeable.
So, my first question is, can I even upgraded it? My preliminary searches have found the 802.11b card has been discontinued, is there another option?
My next question, if it is possible to upgrade, is what is the maximum network speed I can possibly achieve wirelessly? I tend to upgrade components, and if - at some point in the future - I upgrade my airport to 802.11n and I have another device with 802.11n capability, can I upgrade my Quicksilver to be able to communicate with that device at 802.11n speeds? Or does it look like 802.11g is going to be the max I can get?
    Thanks!

You can get a 5770 radeon ATI MAC card
Avoid the 5770 cards on ebay and Amazon - many are black market or manipulated cards.
Buy it from Apple online store or B&H photo or Macconection
And in my case, I was able to sell my old 2600 XT card on ebay for $65 and put that money toward a 5770 card (Which was about $230 minus the $65)
I installed the 5770 in my early Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 and it works great

  • Airport Card for PowerBook G4

How do I know if my PowerBook G4 is airport ready? What kind of airport card would I use?

According to Apple Specifications, your PB would require the original AirPort Card.
Unfortunately, Apple no longer supplies these, however, there are several vendors (Caveat Emperor) out there that still do.
A few examples, doing a Google search for "AirPort Card":

  • Where (and what) to get airport card for PM 1.0 GHz FW800?

I dont know if I should be getting the airport card or the airport extreme, and even if I knew, I have no idea where is reliable. I've seen it on amazon.com for $42 new w/o box, and one unopened for $60 on craigslist(there are pictures, Im pretty sure its legit). Does anyone know where is reliable(and preferably cheap)?
    Thanks!

Hi! It's not an option your machine will only be able to use an airport extreme card. A regular one won't work. As for the site I've never bought anything from them and as with most internet sites it's a gamble. If you are worried then buying one purported to be as "new" on eBay with a seller with 99-100% ratings is probably a safe bet. Tom

  • Where can I buy the airport card for the G3 ibook?

    Hi
I recently purchased an old ibook G3 and am wanting to use it wirelessly. I can't seem to locate the airport card that is needed to make it work. Can i buy it from the mac store online? Also, i have the airport extreme at home...will it work on that network with the airport card?? Cheers

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
No, the original AirPort card the iBook needs is no longer available from Apple.
I just checked these links for the original AirPort card today (ranked in order of price, lowest to highest, shipping not figured):

Yes, it will work with your AirPort Extreme Base Station.
    Good luck with the iBook.

  • Correct Airport card for Dual MD FW800

I have an old Mac G4 dual processor 1.25 mirror door, firewire 800. I am trying to find an airport card or other wireless connectivity device to allow it to connect to my home wi-fi network.
I have ordered and returned the *Apple Airport 802.11b Wireless Card* (that was listed for PowerBook G3 FireWire; all PowerBook G4 'Titanium' models; all iBook G3s; PowerMac G4 AGP Models 350-1GHz; PowerMac G4 Cube, eMac G4 700/800MHz. System Pulls with 1 Year OWC Warranty.) This one does not fit. After discussion with tech support they realized that it did not fit the 800 FW models. SHe directed me to buythe Airport Extreme card.
The *Airport Extreme* does not fit; it is too small and does not fit the given slot.
Does anyone know is there another Airport card that goes in this computer, or have other solution to get this computer on my wifi network without running ethernet. I would like to put it in a workshop/studio on the back of our lot for internet and music sharing. Ideally, I don't want to run dig and bury cables.
    Thanks!

But do you mean that I install the airport extreme I. The PCI slot?
There is a dedicated loaction for the card away from the PCI slots. Look at this image:
In this view, the card goes in the lower left corner. The connector is the small dark rectangle on the left edge of the LB, and the light gray square on the case door is the bracket that positions the card. The little loop of white wire in front of the small cooling fan is, I believe, the antenna for the card.
Note that in this image, the processor card, RAM, video card and PCI cards have not yet been installed.
