Airport Card: how and why

Hello!
I am thinking about making my iBook wireless as I am moving to a new house (an apartment or a flat as it is called in the UK) in Tokyo. Right now, I have a wired network in which I have my computers connected to internet via long ethernet cables that I managed to hide it beneath the carpet... however, this is not gonna be an option for my new house...
I am wondering if any body knows where and how I could possibly purchase the original Airport card in the UK. I've searched eBay, but I am not sure if I could trust them... I was also amazed at how expensive they were!
Also, in general, do people find using airport very convenient?
any advice would be grateful!

Original AirPort cards are hard to come by and expensive since Apple quit selling them. I have links to sources. I checked out the first one, iFixit:
http://www.ifixit.com/cart/customer/product.php?productid=98&cat=&page=1
Which does ship to the UK and Japan:
http://www.ifixit.com/cart/customer/help.php?section=conditions
Check out some of the other links for other possibilities:

http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=10061
http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/apaicau.html
Click on their "Terms and Conditions" or "Shipping" pages to see if they ship internationally.
AirPort is VERY convenient, indeed. I wouldn't be without it.
Installation instructions can be found in this Apple Knowledge Base article:

How and why do I use Xpn files in Photoshop cc 2014. in windows & SP2. I have been given about 20 .XPN files with a Photoshop course. I believe they are PS presets. I have no idea what to do with them.

To be honest, i don't what those are either, as far as photoshop is concerned.

Java stack holds application data at the file system level (/usr/sap/SID/JC00). Also the configuration of the Java stacks are saved in the database level and also present in the configuration files at the file system level. sapinst will take care of all the configuration changes during the export and import.
The export and import for Java stacks was mandatory for the Java systems based on the previous Netweaver releases. The systems based on the newer Netweaver release don't need export and import

  • ITunes Match has deleted my music files. How and Why?

I have used iTunes Match since January 2012 however I have noticed that fewer and fewer of my songs are available on my linked devices (iPhone, iPad). When I go to the iTunes Media Library folder to see the original files, many are missing. Typically there are only 1 or 2 song files in an album folder and the rest are just not there.
On an IOS device the songs still appear in the playlists but if selected it will just jump down the list until it finds a song that it decides it can play.
My iTunes library folder was transferred on to a 2GB network attached Lacie drive as it was too big to put on my MBP Retina in July 2012. Currently I use a 2009 iMac for the main iTunes however it is still pointing to the iTunes folder on the Lacie. MBP and iMac are authorised with iTunes store and Home Sharing is on. MBP is set to use Home Sharing, so is not syncing with Match. Apple TV 2 can also access Match and Home Sharing.
To fix this I am now working my way through a backup from June 2012 and manually checking and synching my 1200 top level iTunes folders. Honestly most album folders have only 1 or 2 tracks so I am copying back all the missing tracks one folder at a time. (iTunes has 14000 songs). I cannot merely replace the corrupt new library with the old library backup as the last 12 mths of acquisitions would disappear.
Further there are tracks that have been renamed and filed incorrectly. I have tracks labelled as Bowie or Daft Punk, in Bowie or Daft Punk playlists that are actually from an album of recordings of bird and animal sounds from sub tropical tropical rainforests. Now that kills the party when Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger crossfades into the sound of the mating call of the green tree frog let me tell you.
I have rematched my library several times over the last 12 months. When moving to the Lacie and MBP, then again when moving to the iMac for iTunes but leaving the files on the Lacie.
It's a big mess that will take me about 12-15 hours of filing to (mostly) fix. I'm up to "J".
Why and how did my original files disappear off my Lacie drive? This software/service should not have those rights.
I am a Mac fan and a college IT Teacher so run a well organised home network and am just at a loss.
    Please advise.
    MBP Retina 256GB 16GB 10.8.4, iMac 21" 2009 500GB 4GB 10.8.4, iPhone 4s 32GB 6.1.3, iPad2 32GB 6.1.3

iTunes Match does not have the ability to remove local files.
The service operates by comparing the selected iTunes Library with the iTunes Store content and 'matching' or 'uploading' - it is very straightforward a 'match' provides equivalent access to iTunes Store content as a recognised 'purchase'; upload simply copies a 256k AAC variant into the cloud.  There are no elements of this activity that can erase the local library content.
Would suggest you explore possible alternative causes of file loss.  Given the pattern described of selective deletion, leaving many Songs intact - would suggest making at least 2 secure offline Song file backups and starting the library again from a fresh install of iTunes once a thorough sweep of the system has been completed for virus.  It is also worth assessing the physical security of the system - who has access & with what privileges.
To access Songs from the cloud, you would have to manually delete the Song from the library or open an empty library - so even when accessing content, iTunes Match provides no local deletion capability.

  • A refresher: what actually is the SIM card for and WHY is it removable?

I am sure that this topic has been addressed before. However, since I am a bit familiar as to WHY smilar SIM cards are removable and changeable in, say, European phones, I am wondering WHY the iPhone has one, and what purpose does it serve especially since the iPhone is so closely related to its own particular flavor of ATT service..
    Thanks!

A SIM card or Subscriber Identity Module is a portable memory chip. The SIM card makes it easy to switch to a new phone by simply sliding the SIM out of the old phone and into the new one. The SIM holds personal identity information, cell phone number, and on some models of phones, teh phone book along with other data. It can be thought of as a mini hard disk that automatically activates the phone into which it is inserted.
A SIM card can come in very handy. For example, let's say your phone runs out of battery power at a friend's house. Assuming you both have SIM-based phones, you can remove the SIM card from your phone and slide it into your friend's phone to make your call. Your carrier processes the call as if it were made from your phone, so it won't count against your friend's minutes.
If you upgrade your phone there's no hassle involved. The SIM card is all you need. Just slide it into the new phone and you're good to go. You can even keep multiple phones for different purposes. An inexpensive phone in the glove compartment, for example, for emergency use, one phone for work and another for home. Just slide your SIM card into whatever phone you wish to use.
High-end cell phones can be very attractive and somewhat pricey. If you invest in an expensive phone you might want to keep it awhile. Using a SIM card, it is even possible to switch carriers and continue to use the same phone. The new carrier will simply issue you their own SIM card. The phone must be unlocked, however, and operate on the new carrier's frequency or band.
A SIM card provides an even bigger advantage for international travelers -- simply take your phone with you and buy a local SIM card with minutes. For example, a traveler from the U.S. staying in the U.K. can purchase a SIM card across the pond. Now the phone can be used to call throughout England without paying international roaming charges from the carrier back home.
SIM cards are used with carriers that operate on the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) network. The competing network is Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), a technology created by U.S. company Qualcomm. As of fall 2005, CDMA cell phones and CDMA carriers do not support SIM cards in most parts of the world, though this is changing. A CDMA SIM card called the R-UIM (Re-Useable Identification Module) was made available in China in 2002, and will eventually be available worldwide. Expectations for the future include a cell phone market that supports both SIM (GSM) and R-UIM (CDMA) cards by default.

Hi Matt - the following extract from iMovie Help should get you back on track:
    From iMovie '11 Help ( http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3b0fbc0a )
To pin background music to video
In the Project browser, move the pointer along the upper-left edge of the background music well until it turns into a hand, and then drag the top-left corner of the background music well slowly to the right. A pin icon appears in the corner of the background music well, and the background color changes from green to purple.
Continue dragging the pin until it’s positioned above the video frame where you want the music to begin playing. The background music well turns to purple, indicating it’s been pinned to a video frame.
After you pin music to a video frame, unless you “unpin” it, the music stays with that frame even if you rearrange the order of your video clips.
    To unpin background music
If you’ve pinned background music to a video frame and now you want to rearrange the background music clips in your movie, you can unpin it.
In the Project browser, click to select the background music well (it becomes outlined in yellow), and then choose Clip > Unpin Music Track.
The Clip menu appears in a light gray bar across the top of your computer screen.
Here's an alternative method for adding music to your video (which I use in preference to the back ground method) -
Rather than dragging the music to the grey background area, drag it directly on top of a video clip, close to where you want it to start. When you drop the music, a narrow green strip (bar/track) will appear below the video thumbnails. You can slide this back and forth in order to get it to start in the exact position. You can also drag the ends in to shorten or trim the music track. Or drag them out again to lengthen the track. You can also split the audio and show the audio waveforms, adjust volume within a track and so forth. Check iMovie Help for more details.

  • Airport Card installation and compatability

I had set up my mac with Tiger and I noticed it has no Wi-Fi uses. I want and have to use my Wi-Fi router but I'm unsure if installing a card and using my current router is the ticket.

Do you mean that you have set up your system and subsequently discovered it has no wifi?
if so, and if it is an early G4 Mac mini (2 USB ports on the back - later Intel models have 4 USB ports) then it may be one of the models which was sold with no Airport (Apple's name for wifi) installed. The first minis had it as a build to order, but not as standard.
If it has no Airport hardware inside, you can add wifi by buying an Airport upgrade kit for it, but these are not easy to find and are quite expensive. Alternatively, you might find a USB wifi dongle that works, but this is typically not a reliable way to network systems.

  • Upgrade - how and why

These questions are bound to sound very basic, but here goes.
I have a G5 iMac that is almost 3 years old running on 10.3.9. My wife purchased Adobe Creative Suite 3 (which she needs for her business) without checking the system requirements.
The disks basically wont install unless we are on 10.4.8 or higher. I soon realized that I need to 'upgrade' instead of updating if I want to use this software.
    My questions are these:
    1) Do I upgrade to 10.4, or straight to the just released Leopard? Why would I do one vs. the other - limitations of my computer? Is 10.4 still available now that Leopard is out?
    2) If I upgrade to 10.4 or Leopard, will I have to reinstall all of my applications (iTunes, iPhoto, MS Office apps, etc.)? If so, will I potentially have to buy new versions of those that will run on the new OS, or will the old versions work (or are the upgrades free)?
    3) In doing all this, will I lose any of my files or have any other trouble that I cant foresee right now?
I am worried that I am opening a can of worms here, and that I will be regretting it if I do go forward with any OS upgrade because of all the additional upgrades that come along with it.
    Thanks,
    - Bob

    Hi Bob!
"Do I upgrade to 10.4, or straight to the just released Leopard?"
That would depend on if the iMac G5 meets the Leopard System Requirements, which it probably does, and whether you want the latest version of OS X.
"Is 10.4 still available now that Leopard is out?"
Tiger 10.4.x, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Leopard 10.5.x, is the most up to date OS.
But, if you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased, sometimes less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, etc.
Some Apple retail stores, or Apple resellers, may also still have Tiger 10.4.x in stock.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.
    Additional info in these links.
Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs
What's A Computer Specific Mac OS X Release
Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
"If I upgrade to 10.4 or Leopard, will I have to reinstall all of my applications..."
Not if you perform a Simple Upgrade of Leopard 10.5.x.
"...will I potentially have to buy new versions of those that will run on the new OS, or will the old versions work (or are the upgrades free)?"
That would depend on the application.
I think all of the Apple applications should be compatible, but for Third-Party applications, you would have to check with the developer.
"In doing all this, will I lose any of my files or have any other trouble that I cant foresee right now?"
If your iMac is healthy, and the upgrade is done properly, you shouldn't have a problem.
But you should create a system backup, or at least back up any data that you could not bear to lose, on the off chance, that the upgrade is unsuccessful.

  • Heat!!! :( how and why is the computer so hot

    how can i fix this

The reason that it is hot is because you have a hot i7 CPU in a small enclosed box. A small fan with radiator will help, but it is limited. Check out this Intel website: http://ark.intel.com/products/43560?wapkw=i7+620m You will see that under the specs the Tjunction is rated at 105 degrees Centigrade. Which is hot enough to boil water! You can do better with a larger box and more space, but not with a laptop. With my laptop, I normally use an external monitor, mouse and keyboard. Keep the laptop on a hard flat surface and don't notice the heat.

  • How and why routers bind subnet mask to updates received

    Dear friends
Can someone explains how routers bind subnet mask to routing updates received from other routers when they themselves have some interface of that class itself and what are the different cases and treatment.
    Like
    1. when routers dont have entries of that class of network
    2. when routers have interface configured for that class and the same class of routing update is coming from other neighboring routers
    3. if they have more than one class of subnet assign to its interface but different subnet mask and when they receives update from other neighboring routers what are the actions they take.
I am taking the case with Classful routing protocols
Please explain point by point if possible with example also

  • Blackburst Generators....what when how and WHY ???

    Hi,
I have started using FCP 7 years ago while I was still studying. Started working with DV, small projects, no money, no idea about the technology, learned it all by making mistakes are spending lots of time on forums like this one and reading lots of articles. Now I have started to work for bigger companies, I'm editing for the telly, and things are going well. I know some things about the decks and hardware I'm using, but a lot I don't know.
Now, one company I work for, they use a blackburst generator. The other company doesn't. The one without the bbg tends to have problems capturing or playing out materials onto their decks. I was wondering whether the bbg might have something to do with this.
This may just be the dumbest thing I have asked on this forum so far. But bear with me, help me overcome my stupidity. Make me smart (don't care much about handsome) and happy. Please.
What exactly does a blackburst generator do?
    Why would I need one?
What might happen if I don't use one (working with BetaSP and DigiBeta decks)?
Any thoughts, any help is much appreciated. Maybe there are books on this, but I haven't found any. And the manuals I have read so far are a wee bit too technical for me.
    Cheers and thanks a lot,
    Colin

What exactly does a blackburst generator do? < </div>
Any good video technology book will clear this up for you. It's not complicated but it is technobabble. amazon.com and search for video text books. Your local library may have a couple.
"Black" is a composite color NTSC video signal that contains all 6 kinds of timing signals (vertical sync, vertical blanking, horizontal sync, subcarrrier, and umm, some others). Most modern video gear has the ability to use black as a genlock source and strip off any timing components it requires. Note that providing one or more timing signals to various components is quite different from providing genlock.
    Why would I need one? < </div>
You don't. If you do,, you don't need to ask because your gear manuals will clearly indicate where it gets hooked up.
What might happen if I don't use one (working with BetaSP and DigiBeta decks)?< </div>
Open the manuals to see if you need one. It will be obvious but I repsectifully disagree with the others about the artifacts that are created when sync or timing signals are or are not present. Most video decks do not require sync or genlock to playback, you Macintosh certainly doesn't and most decks will use any coherent input signal (your camera) as the sync reference. However, unless you have a timebase corrector on it, another deck will NOT be sufficiently stable to provide proper sync when dubbing. Maybe.
