  • 2011 Macbook Pro Airport card Issues

    Hi guys,
I have been having a problem with my 15" 2011 Macbook Pro. Over the last week my wifi has been malfunctioning. I will be able to succesfully connect to my WiFi for about 30 minutes, but then the signal drops. When I click on the connection reticule on the top right it says my WiFi is on, but that no hotspots can be detected. There are at least half a dozen hotspots near me.
After this, if I turn off the WiFi it will not turn back on. I have to restart my Macbook to regain connectivity. This has not coincided with any recent installations of hardware or software.
If anyone has solutions I would be very grateful. I have tried resetting my PRAM. I am about 2 months out of warranty. So, if this does require service I would appreciate any estimates on the cost.
    Thank you!
    Ryan

    Your router is likely fine.
You should first update the Airport firmware for it, simply run the Airport and Software update.
    See this
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3802
And then go to your System Preferences > Network > Advanced > TCP/IP and for IPv6 turn : OFF
Reboot and see how that goes.
When you connect to the router it gives you a lease on a IP address, if your computer's time and date are off this could make the lease expire and you connect and then get disconnected. So check that, see if it holds.
    Reset your SMC and NVRAM/PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Go to your <home> /Library/Preferences and drag the
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
file to the desktop and reboot, it will be rebuilt, hit your Sytem Preferences and reset them.
drag the useless file on the desktop to the trash.

  • No Airport Card - Reinstall OSX?

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro that has seemingly always had airport card issues. Whenever it powered down (my kids are super bad at taking off with the laptop and not connecting it to a power source), most of the time the airport card would disappear and I'd have to shock the PRAM to get it back. This worked swimmingly until about a month ago. I have tried several things online to try to get the airport card back, but it isn't showing up at all.
I took my macbook to a non-Mac certified repair place because it was closer than going to a mac store. (Of note, my mac is out of warranty and the nearest mac store is 2-1/2 hours away, and the nearest certified repair place is 2 hours away.)
They charged me a fee to run diagnostics and then told me that the card is fine and the wireless is fine, but the osx is corrupt and they will have to reinstall the OSX to fix it. They said it would wipe all my current information off the computer, but that for another $50 they could back up the computer and migrate the information back over.
It confused me that reinstalling the OSX might fix the issue. I haven't seen this as a fix anywhere online. The guy I talked to didn't sound confident and really dismissed me when I tried to understand this proposed fix. Because I have (or think I have) the OSX install disk, I chose to pick up my Mac and do more research.
Which brings me to the Apple Support Community. Before I try to figure out reinstalling, does this make sense as the next step? Are there other things I can do or try to diagnose what is really going on. Of note, the laptop works fine on an ethernet cord plugged in to the router. Just doesn't show an airport card.

After trying various ways involving restarting the mac and holding command+alt+P+R and other various ways I decided to open up the mac and take a look myself. Turns out it was just unplugged. It's a very small connector right next to the DVD drive. It looked a little loose and turns out it was. I reconnected it, started up the computer and my wifi worked immediately! No need to contact apple or take it in for a costly repair.

  • Macbook Says Airport Card is Uninstalled?

I bought a Spring 2010 13" Macbook Pro refurbished from Apple in late April of 2011. Two weeks later the airport card failed and Apple installed a new one for me. Everything was fine until July 28th 2012, since then i've had nothing but problems with both the airport card in my computer and the service at the local Apple store.
Sometimes when I wake my computer back up the WiFi symbol isn't connected and it says something along the lines of "No Airport Card Installed" or "Airport card Uninstalled". At this point I have to make an Genius Bar appointment and drive to the Apple store and they give me some kind of band-aid solution that only works for the day, or just a couple hours and then I no longer have internet again.
I went through this process (no connection, Genius Bar appointment, and then my airport card fails later that day or the next day) about 5 times. Sometimes two appointments with the genius bar in the same day.
Finally one of the Geniuses recommended that pay $107 for a new airport card and this would fix the problem, so I did. When I got my Macbook back it worked for 3 days, so then The Genius bar gave me yet again another band-aid solution (zapped my P-Ram or something) and sure enough it worked for a day and then I lost connection again.
I brought it back again and one Genius said they would take it in, look at it and go over the whole computer carefully. He also said that it is not an Airport Card issue, but possible a connection to the airport card. He also said that I might need to buy yet another part, but that the $107 I already paid would go toward that part, which I appreciated.
So I got my computer back 2 days ago and all they did was install another Airport card and today my Aiport card failed again. Did they even listen to me? When I got it back from them and told me they put a new airport card in I said we talked about this and that wasn't the probelm, and they just corrected me and said that it was the problem. What?! They didn't even read over any of the notes they took down from my last visit!?
I have been to the Genius Bar about 7 or 8 times now (I would have gone more but I was out of town for a week) and I'm not getting the right answer for a busted computer that I have only had for about a year. Are they keeping something from me? This has been an awful experience despite how kind everyone acts at the apple store.
Thanks for reading, I hope someone out there has a solution for me.

Given your experience I believe it's unlikely the problem is due to a failed AirPort card. You replaced it twice and it failed twice. I would pursue another cause, but there is nothing left to do on a MBP except to replace its logic board.
If you did not purchase AppleCare your warranty has now expired, and a new motherboard will approach the cost of a brand new MacBook Pro. Considering the circumstances, I would appeal to a Genius to consider the repair efforts conducted so far and discuss the most inexpensive solution. Good luck!

  • Switching airport cards to solve 10.5.2 network issue

Ever since 10.5.2, i can no longer get online on various routers. my friend who has also updated can get on these same networks that i can't.
i have a macbook w/ the following airport card: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x87)
    Firmware Version: 1.2.2
    Wireless Channel: 6
he has a macbook pro w/ the following airport card: Airport Extreme (0x168C,0x86)
    Firmware 1.3.2
    Wireless Ch. 6
i am wondering if it would be possible to change my airport card to the one my friend has - or will it not be compatible with my macbook. does anyone know?
i am hoping this will solve my problem after 10.5.2
today apple care basically responded to the issue with "blah blah blah 3rd party blah blah blah compatibility blah blah blah" and pretty much said they weren't working on a fix for this as it was not an issue with 10.5.2.
they said i could go back to 10.5.1 (which i already have) - problem is, besides their screw up with the networking - they also did a lot of other fixes that i would like to have since i spent the money on leopard and should be able to do the upgrades w/out losing things like network capability.
i hoping swapping the airport card will fix it.

yes, switching back to 10.5.1 did solve my problem. not really a solution though is it... not if you would like to have the benefit of all the other fixes that came with 10.5.2.
as far as someone having a solution - i've been following these threads for awhile now and most "solutions" involve making changes to the router. this is not a solution since not all routers that people use w/ a laptop are accessible. i would think that most of us use routers in a variety of locations other than our homes ranging from work to coffee shops to hotels etc.
i don't think coffee shops and hotels are going to allow you to go in and play with their networking system.
as far as i see the only fix is for able to change whatever they did - but seeing as they won't even admit to creating the problem, i am not holding my breath for a solution from them.
i am more and more disappointed with apple. sure, they are coming out with some amazing technology, but as they do their customer service is slipping away as well as the quality of their craftsmanship and attention to detail. i for one wish that apple would slow down a bit on the "toys & gadgets" and get back to paying more attention to their basic items - ie computers. i mean, really, did we really need "the thinnest notebook ever"? i'm not sure i really understand the point, especially when they haven't solved all the glitches with their products that are already out there.

  • HT4628 I did the security update on 4-2-13 and now my airport card will not turn on. OS 10.6.8 Intel imac 4,1 core duo. My macbook pro did not have this issue and wifi here is working on that. Is there a setting that was changed? Thank you!

Airport card will not turn on after security update yesterday. worked normally (for the download of the update) until then. Wifi here works fine with my Macbook Pro right now so the issue is with the card / computer / software not the provider. Did the update change something?
OS 10.6.8 imac core duo.  The indicator is on the tool bar but is empty.

  • MacBook wireless issue (ongoing) & DIY airport card replacement

    Hello,
With reference to the ongoing MacBook/OSX (10.5.3) Leopard intermittent wireless issues discussed in this forum has anybody gone ahead and taken matters into their own hands and purchased and installed a new Airport card for their MacBook from www.ifixit.com?
    Further details at: http://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-Core-2-Duo-Santa-Rosa-Penryn-802-11n -Airport-Extreme-Card/IF186-062
If so, did it resolve your intermittent Airport issues?
It seems to me that when the MacBook is running on battery power only the Airport card does not realise that the MacBook has come out of sleep sometimes and therefore does not always function correctly. Maybe the Airport card does not receive sufficient power when the MacBook comes out of sleep mode whilst running on batteries only?
Typically when I run the MacBook connected to power the intermittent wireless problem does not occur.
This issue has been a recurring problem for me for 6 months now and unfortunately I have not seen Apple address this issue.
My MacBook is 6-months old and is a black MacBook using a 2.2GHz processor running Leopard OSX 10.5.3.
    Cheers,

Visit Apple Store and replaced the Airport card.

  • Macbook Pro, accidentally uninstalled airport card somehow. Reinstalled OS and everythng, appears to be software issue, but I don't know what to do.

Dad's Macbook Pro (10.6.3, from 2010) had perfect wifi, he accidentally uninstalled(?) it somehow, has no idea how he did it.
It said "no airport card installed" when I'd click the little wifi icon on the bar, or go into network settings.
I have wiped hard drive, reinstalled OS, reset SMC and PRAM, to no avail, and now there is no wifi icon at all.
I ran a hardware test (both regular and extensive), and nothing is coming up.
It's like the computer just CAN'T use wifi- I can't select it from any menu, for example:
-in the main "Network" window (under System Pref) it shows only Ethernet and Firewire on the side bar
-when I select the "+" to add a service/interface, only Firewire, Ethernet, Bluetooth DUN, VPN, 6 to 4 and PPPoE appear
-in "Network Setup Assistant" only DSL modem, cable modem, LAN are choices. "AirPort" is there, but is grayed out and cannot be selected.
Airport Untility is still installed, and will open but says unable to find any devices.
And when I ran System Profiler, under Network > AirPort, I have the following
    "Software Versions:
         Menu Extra: 6.2.1
         Configd plug in: 6.2
         System Profiler: 6.0
         Network Preference: 6.2.1
         AirPort Utility: 5.4.2
         IO80211 Family: 3.1"
I simply don't know what to do.  At first I thought I might need a physical "card" replaced, but hardware test says everything is fine, so I feel it must be software, but I wouldn't know what to try besides what I've already tried- I thought reinstalling the OS would do the trick, honestly, but it hasn't. Please help.

System profiler certainly does suppy information of installed hardware. Not sure why you said it doesn't.
If there is no wifi card found in the syetem then the info I outlined would be there.

  • 10.4.8 - Major Issues with Airport card on Intel 17"

    Hi -
I have installed the new terrorist update 10.4.8....To me it seem more like installing a virus than an update on an OS. My computer which was soooo fast (MacBook Pro 17") has now lost about 50% performance on all flanks... My Airport card is ERRATIC as HE** and I hate my self for updating.... I've already done repairing of any of the usual suspects
    DONT UPDATE TO 10.4.8

    for airport try this
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304482
    open shell anf type:
sudo update_prebinding -degug -root / -force
    restart
    check the performance.

  • Mac Pro airport card boot issues

I've taken an old airport card from a Mac Mini, and installed it in an Early 2009 Mac Pro.
The unit should be fully compatible, but when I boot, it just hangs at the 50% mark on the startup screen.
If I remove the card, the machine boots just fine.
Is there a firmware update I need to make to the system, to tell it about the new wireless card?

What makes yo think it is compatible? It seems not to be.
Also these do not list a Mini card being compatible with a Mac Pro desktop card

    Hello Aldric, welcome to discussions.
It's quite suspicious that your Airport card and one of your memory modules have suddenly "disappeared" at the same time.
This could certainly indicate a hardware issue, but I won't speculate as to what caused it. Sure, a power surge could do this... have you had one recently?
I would try taking the memory module, and the airport card out of your system, and then re-install them.
If your situation does not improve, then you should probably take your machine to an authorized Apple service center.

  • New Airport card, no service...Help

I just bought an airport card for my iMac G4, I have wireless internet and two other macs, they work perfectly with their airport cards. I put my airport card in and nothing, keeps saying there was an error connecting to airport network, ive called my internet provider, apple, and the router supplier. None helped whatsoever, I even lost 50 dollars to apple for no help HA. It must be my computer because ive used a working airport card from my macbook and it still did not give me signal, if anyone could throw me some advice, or something im doing wrong or not doing, or some software that i need, I would be very grateful. Thank You.
    - The knight of ewigkeit

hey there Knight & welcome to discussions,
i had this issue w/ a friend's Mac & the problem was pilot error-- the card wasn't snapped in tight to the cable. as soon as i did that the Mac immediately found my network & asked to join. i am assuming you have the correct card-an Airport Extreme made for this computer, it should be wireless b/g compatible, not the original Airport Card. see this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=26237. step by step instruction w/ pix. how i installed Airport Extreme card in a 20" iMac G4.
    good luck.

  • Can I use Airport Extreme instead of an internal Airport Card?

+Sorry I realise there are various queries all over the web relating to this same issue, however I can't seem to find a consensus anywhere, or a setup that specifically relates to my situation...+
I currently have a G5 iMac (OS X 10.5.6), which connects wirelessly to my 2Wire "2701HGV-W Gateway" ADSL2+ modem/router. I also have a Lexmark wi-fi printer wirelessly connected to the network. This setup has worked flawlessly for nearly a year now. Occasionally a friend comes over and connects his XP laptop to the same network, again without any problems.
I use WPA2 security and my wireless network is set to 802.11b/g (said friend's XP laptop runs on 'b' only; my iMac and printer run on 'g').
Yesterday I inherited an old eMac (1GHz, 80GB, 512MB RAM, superdrive, 56kb modem, no airport card). In lieu of buying a really long ethernet cable or going to the hassle of finding and installing a suitable airport card (I'm not a technical guy!), I wondered if I could simply buy an Airport Express, and connect that to my eMac via a short ethernet cable, this enabling the eMac to get online? The setup I'm imaging goes something like this:
    *eMac > ethernet cable > Airport Express > (((wireless connection))) > 2Wire modem/router > internet.*
Is this a feasible solution? Would it enable me to connect to the wi-fi printer and also share files with my iMac?
Also, if it would work, could I simultaneously connect my Time Machine HD (or another external HD) to the USB port on the Airport Express to share it with both my iMac and eMac?

Not unless you're already using an AirPort base station as the router. The AeroPad mini meets your requirements.

  • "No airport card installed" only in swedish mode?

Hi all, got this problem with my Macbook pro!
Recently when I was reconfiguring my wifi-network (assigning my time capsule as main router and the modem I got from my ISP as a "bridge"), I noticed that my airport card was acting strange.
The problem is that it says "No airport card installed", but I still got internet connection and can surf/download stuff without a problem. Also, when I go into "System preferences/Network" I can see my airport connection and turn it on/off. Although when I click "Advanced" nothing happens.
I've tried several things but none seems to work, and I'm not sure its an hardware issue. Anyway, this is what I've tried:
    1. Rebooting (several times) = Didn't work
    2. Resetting PRAM and NVRAM = Didn't work
    3. SMC-reset = Didn't work
    4. Rebooting into Windows XP via bootcamp = Airport card detected and working just fine
    5. Restoring older save via time capsule = Didn't work
    6. Format and reinstall Snow leopard and restore older save via time capsule = Didn't work
    7. Format and reinstall Snow leopard (again) = Didn't work...-ish?
Now, here's the strange bit. As I log in to a new account with english as main language I notice that the wifi-icon on the top dashboard now is filled (it was greyed out and only said "No airport card installed [in swedish ofc]) and I can now click it, change network and all that stuff. Although, when I go to "System preferences/Language & text" and change my preferred language to swedish and log out & in, the same problem occurs (greyed out wifi-logo, no airport card installed etc.)
    So, I'm totally confused. Halp?

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.
If that doesn't do it, the card has likely died.

  • How do i know an airport card is installed & not working or not installed?

    My Mac details are:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
I've always just connected to the internet via an ethernet cable to my router/modem, but now I don't want the long cord going from the phone line to the office within the house. I have a Airport Express and was wondering if I could set this up in the lounge and connect my computer/laptop/stereo etc.
To do this do I need to have an airport card installed. If so, which one and are they easy to instal?
    Appreciate any help.
    Cheers

If you remove the side door and look down at the mother board, you can observe if the airport card is there. You can also use ASP . There are kits for the bluetooth and airport card available. Installation is not difficult. The difficult part is finding the connector wires. these are tucked at the top border of the mother board. The other issue is which lead goes to which connector. You can find the answer on the internet, just Google it.
Bottom line on the original Mac Pro the wireless reliability with that card is short range. Must have not too much interference.
