Airport card (old one, not Extreme) and WPA2?

seems it doesn't support WPA2, is that right?
10.3.9, iBook G3, Airport 4.2 software

Good question - it isn't an issue someone has mentioned here before (and I never checked). If that is the case, it sounds like Apple forgot to change the programming to make sure that option wasn't provided (after you click "other") on Macs with original Airport cards. Suffice it to say - WPA2 most certainly is NOT supported on a Mac equipped with an original Airport card.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • My airport card appears as "not installed" what now?

My airport card appears as "not installed" what now?

    Hi Pastorjtc,
More than likely HP is not going to support hardware for Windows 8 on any system purchased before Oct 1st 2011.  Most Windows 7 drivers will work in Windows 8.
Check out this page to see if your computer has been tested by HP with Windows 8.
You can run the Upgrade assistant software, which will scan your PC and generate a report on what is currently installed on your PC is compatible with Windows 8.  This upgrade guide for Windows 8 provides a lot of information that is needed for anyone considering upgrading.
    I hope this helps.
    Good luck!

  • Airport (not extreme) and WPA encryption with G4 Titanium.

I just purchased the Linksys WRT150N router and basically it works great-with 3/4 of my Macs. However, my 'old' G4 TI 550 with an airport card refuses to work with the WPA Personal security. It either says this network does not support this encryption, or there was an error joining the network. I've updated to OS 10.4.10.
Apple says that this card should work fine with WPA. I've seen talk of "Airport" software, but in the OSX app folder I only have Airport Admin and Airport set up-(there is an app called Airport in the OS 9 folder--and this Arpt card was first installed under sys 9). My software updater doesn't show any recent Airport upgrades so I don't know where I am with that. The TI works fine with the router w/out any security ;-( so that's what I'm doing currently.
    Ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

Checked the WPA2 idea--definitely using WPA (not 2) Personal. Actually it won't connect thru WEP either.
(Here's another factoid about this machine... its ethernet port got fried in a lightning storm years ago-which actually forced the purchase of the airport card rather than buying a new motherboard)
    What else?
    thanks

  • MacOSX 10.3.8 system with original Airport card can't connect via WPA/WPA2

    Hi all,
My WiFi network consists of an Airport Express running a WPA/WPA2 Personal network and 802.11b/g compatibility, upon which 3 Macs (all with Airport Extreme/G or /Draft-N cards) and 2 PCs (both G compatible) merrily connect to.
I have an old PowerMac G4 which I've just fitted with an original non-Extreme Airport card, and having updated MacOSX 10.3.8 with Airport 4.2 to enable WPA access, it still refuses to connect to the network; I get the "There was an error joining the Airport network ..." when the correct password is entered.
My understanding is that while the old Airport cards don't support WPA2, they do support WPA and thus if the Airport Express network is set to WPA/WPA2 and b/g compatibility (which I'm assuming is some kind of all encompassing compatibility mode, given there's also sole WPA2 options) then it shouldn't have any problems connecting to the network. What am I missing here?
    Cheers, Ben.

I am having the exact same problem. Powerbook G4; original factory installed airport card; with Panther 10.3.9 OS plus updated 4.2 Airport Admin. Utility. It will NOT connect to my Airport Express set to the WPA/WPA2, which is working fine with my iPod touch.
When I get to the screen requesting password for my chosen airport network ("Wireless Security: WPA Personal), the "OK" button is grayed out and it will not even let me submit a password to connect. Can somebody help?

  • Airport card with G4 - not connecting

I have an Airport Extreme base station connected to my home Windows computer. It appears to be set up fine and broadcasting fine. I get a good signal on my laptop MacBookPRo. I just installed a Airport Card in my older G4 733MHZ PowerPC. I believe it is installed right. The system profiler recognizes it. The base station is upstairs at my house, the G4 downstairs. I am not getting a signal to the G4. The laptop is getting a signal sitting right next to it. Distance is only about 20yards between base station and computer although it is downstairs. Seems to be something wrong with Card or the cards ability to read a signal compared to the built in card in the MACBOOK PRO. I have moved the base station as close as I can. Not sure why one would get the signal and not the other. Any ideas.

Your Power Mac G4 733 MHz requires the original 802.11b AirPort card. This card's maximum wireless speed is theoretically 11 Mbps.
There are two reasons why the card may not be receiving a signal:
    (1) The network is configured to operate at 5 GHz or 802.11n only. You would need to ensure that your AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) is configured to operate in an 802.11b compatible mode for the Power Mac G4 733 MHz to be able to see and connect to the wireless network.
    (2) The antenna wire inside the Power Mac G4 733 MHz is not connected to the AirPort card. You would need to find and attach this wire to the card.

  • Airport card for a Powerbook G4 and DVD hardware upgrade

Hi all, my sister has Powerbook G4 titanium onyx model # 48407 and needs to find an airport card and have it installed. Can you advise us where she can look to purchase one. Apparently apple nolonger makes them.
Also, our second question is: Can a DVD player be installed also. If so, where can she locate one.
    Here are her machines specs:
    Machine Model: PowerBook G4
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 667 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
    Memory: 512 MB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.2.6f1
    Serial Number: QT1470P6KVB
    Sales Order Number: Z03Y00RSA

These products are available, although I would think hard about the expense considering the value of the computer, even more so if you pay for installation.
The old original Airport cards can be found at many used parts dealers like iFixit:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Products/Titanium-Onyx/Wireless/43/25
Remember that these are 802.11b only, not the newer G or any other variant of Wifi, but it would still work on all common wifi networks. It also will not do the better WPA encryption, only the old minimal WEP encryption. Installation is not difficult (iFixit has excellent instructions), or you'll have to find a shop to install it.
You can get wifi cards that use the PC card slot, but last time I looked, it was a nightmare figuring out which ones were compatible.
The optical drive can be replaced with a combo (plays DVDs) or Superdrive (burns DVDs) from places like MCE or OWC:

    http://store.mcetech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&StoreCode=MTOS&CategoryCode=SVCPBG4
Oh, there is a specific titanium section of these forums you should try, as these for the aluminum G4.

I've always just connected to the internet via an ethernet cable to my router/modem, but now I don't want the long cord going from the phone line to the office within the house. I have a Airport Express and was wondering if I could set this up in the lounge and connect my computer/laptop/stereo etc.
To do this do I need to have an airport card installed. If so, which one and are they easy to instal?
    Appreciate any help.
    Cheers

If you remove the side door and look down at the mother board, you can observe if the airport card is there. You can also use ASP . There are kits for the bluetooth and airport card available. Installation is not difficult. The difficult part is finding the connector wires. these are tucked at the top border of the mother board. The other issue is which lead goes to which connector. You can find the answer on the internet, just Google it.
Bottom line on the original Mac Pro the wireless reliability with that card is short range. Must have not too much interference.

  • Airport card (802.22b) not receiving wifi signal(?)

The subject line pretty much says it all. I am currently receiving the internet via an ethernet cable since it seems that my old eMac is unable to receive wifi signals from anywhere, even from my own modem which is roughly three feet from my computer. I have tried reconnecting the antenna wire to my Airport card and reseating it in the computer without success. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance to all who answer!

I checked System Profiler and this is what I got:
    Wireless Card Type: Airport
    Wireless Card Locale: USA
    Wireless Card Firmware Version: 9.52
Current Wireless Network: wireless network not available
Note: Airport was turned on at the time I checked System Profiler
