Airport card suddenly gets no signal--not network problem

Hi all, I have an original Airport card that's been working fine in my G4 TiBook for the past 5 years. Today suddenly my network connection dropped. At first I thought it had to do with the base station, but two other computers in my house (both with Airport Extreme cards, if it makes any difference, though I don't see why it would) both connect fine, and resetting the base station makes no difference. The TiBook still recognizes the Airport card, turns it on and off, etc., but it itself can't see the base station or the network or the other two computers' computer-to-computer networks. When the TiBook creates a computer-to-computer network, my newer AlBook and PowerMac can't see it. I haven't installed anything recently, I haven't dropped the computer, I haven't even looked at it funny. As you can tell, I'm pretty exasperated and at a loss as to where to even begin looking for a problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, we're on totally different generations of powerbooks. Mine is the 2nd gen. Gigabit Ethernet TiBook, so the battery definitely isn't the issue. I'm also using a replacement battery, not an original Apple batt. I also find it hard to imagine a scenario where the battery would suddenly start interfering with the Airport, esp. since the recall defect has to do with overheating.
I went to sleep last night and when I woke up this morning, it was working miraculously. Then, I left and came back a few minutes ago, and it was out again. I think I'm gonna open it up and reseat the card, etc., since it seems like some kind of loose connection. But I have no idea if I'm even in the right ballpark. Ach....
Let me know if you manage to work any miracles.

 menu/About this Mac/System Information (at the bottom, may be called something else) - run that and see if the Airport card is detected.

  • +Added Airport Card to G4 867 Quicksilver - Not seein' any wireless signals

    Hi hello there,
I got this G4 running 10.5 for surfin and music - but I can't seem to get the Airport workin on it.
I have a laptop that is currently using the Airport Express... So I know how to set it up. And I know it's sending out the signals
I installed an Airport card - It's in my "About this mac" so I know it's recognized.
I rebooted (held if for long until it beeped {thanks IT guy}) I zapped the p-ram - It's ON. I got a lil Amber icon next to it in the Network controls. And It's in my Shortcut Airport menu - but I don't see nobody - no networks.
    What am I doing wrong?

Download & try MacStumbler @ http://www.macstumbler.com/ to see if it can detect any signal.

  • AIrport express not reading my airport card suddenly..

After a short period I managed to get my airport express to work thru my laptop. Then it was on to my PC for about 5 hours. That didn't work at all and in the process now I can no longer use express on my laptop. I tried hard resetting and reinstalling the software.
This message keeps coming up when I tried to go thru the setup:
There was an error communicating with your AirPort card. Please make sure it is installed properly and try the AirPort Setup Assistant again.
My DHCP is on and working fine.. I'm quite confused. Please help thanks

  • Airport Card Suddenly Stopped working at Home

I am using a PB G4 with an Airport card firmware 9.52. All software is up-to-date. (OS 10.4.6)
The airport works fine in other locations -- seeing many signals and getting onto internet.
But at home it is not working. My roommate has an iBOOK and it works fine on our home network. He sees and gets signal and connects to internet. He also SEES many of our neighbors signals.
My laptop doesn't see OUR signal -- nor does it see any of the other signals.
If I connect directly with ethernet cable, I am online. But not with airport.
We have cable with a dLINK 2.4 GHZ wireless Broadband router.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Your PowerBook G4 800 MHz has the original, 802.11b, AirPort pre-installed.
If your roommate's iBook is a G4, it has the 802.11g AirPort Express installed.
If the network at home (and neighboring networks) is operating in '802.11g only' mode, you will not be able to use them but your roommate will.
Ensure that the base station at home is operating in an 802.11b compatible mode (either '802.11b/g mode' or '802.11b only mode').

  • Switching airport cards to solve 10.5.2 network issue

Ever since 10.5.2, i can no longer get online on various routers. my friend who has also updated can get on these same networks that i can't.
i have a macbook w/ the following airport card: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x87)
    Firmware Version: 1.2.2
    Wireless Channel: 6
he has a macbook pro w/ the following airport card: Airport Extreme (0x168C,0x86)
    Firmware 1.3.2
    Wireless Ch. 6
i am wondering if it would be possible to change my airport card to the one my friend has - or will it not be compatible with my macbook. does anyone know?
i am hoping this will solve my problem after 10.5.2
today apple care basically responded to the issue with "blah blah blah 3rd party blah blah blah compatibility blah blah blah" and pretty much said they weren't working on a fix for this as it was not an issue with 10.5.2.
they said i could go back to 10.5.1 (which i already have) - problem is, besides their screw up with the networking - they also did a lot of other fixes that i would like to have since i spent the money on leopard and should be able to do the upgrades w/out losing things like network capability.
i hoping swapping the airport card will fix it.

yes, switching back to 10.5.1 did solve my problem. not really a solution though is it... not if you would like to have the benefit of all the other fixes that came with 10.5.2.
as far as someone having a solution - i've been following these threads for awhile now and most "solutions" involve making changes to the router. this is not a solution since not all routers that people use w/ a laptop are accessible. i would think that most of us use routers in a variety of locations other than our homes ranging from work to coffee shops to hotels etc.
i don't think coffee shops and hotels are going to allow you to go in and play with their networking system.
as far as i see the only fix is for able to change whatever they did - but seeing as they won't even admit to creating the problem, i am not holding my breath for a solution from them.
i am more and more disappointed with apple. sure, they are coming out with some amazing technology, but as they do their customer service is slipping away as well as the quality of their craftsmanship and attention to detail. i for one wish that apple would slow down a bit on the "toys & gadgets" and get back to paying more attention to their basic items - ie computers. i mean, really, did we really need "the thinnest notebook ever"? i'm not sure i really understand the point, especially when they haven't solved all the glitches with their products that are already out there.

  • My Airport card suddenly stopped working

My hard drive crashed, so a friend replaced it for me. Works fine.
But my airport card is another story. Sometimes I can connect, but only for a few moments before it loses the signal and can't find it again.
Do you suppose it's possible the card got nudged while my friend was repairing the hard drive, and is that something easy to fix?

The computer entered Single User Mode, but repeatedly froze before it reached the command line. After repeating this process many times, I was eventually able to get to the command line. I ran fsck and it modified my file system. I ran it again and it did not modify my file system and did not say that my file system was OK.
Again, I repeated the process many times until I got to the command line. I ran fsck and it came up the first time with the message "The volume Mac appears to be OK." I then typed "reboot" into the command line and my computer began to startup. It displayed the Apple logo, then the rotating progress indicator, then froze.
The computer would still not start up normally after this, and would not boot into Safe Mode, so I ran fsck again. This time it came up with *** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED*** the first time, so I ran it again. After the second time, it said "The volume Mac appears to be OK." I typed "reboot", and still the computer froze during startup.
After all of this I tried again to boot the computer from the Mac OS X Install DVD, and still the same freezing issues. When trying to boot from the DVD the computer does not even attempt to read the disc -- I can hear it spin when I hit "alt" to select my boot disk, but after I select the icon for the DVD, I cannot hear anything happening. I tried again to boot from an external drive, and that still didn't work either.
Note: I don't if this has any significance, but one thing I have noticed is that very occasionally, the computer will boot up, but the display will not turn on.

  • The AirPort card on my MBP says "Not Configured"

I am traveling overseas and all of the sudden my AirPort card won't function. It says "Not configured" and I have not been able to turn it back on in order to log into WIFI networks. I tried the Network Assistant and it tells me the AirPort is not on but it is also unable to turn it on. Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks!

Can you see the AirPort card in System Profiler (Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info)?
Here are some things to try to reset the connection settings on your Mac:
    1) Use the AirPort menu bar item to turn AirPort off, then on again.
    2) In the Network panel of System Preferences delete the AirPort item from the left column, then add it back.
    3) In the same panel as (2), define a new location and see if you can make that work.
    4) In the same panel, select the AirPort connection item, click the "Advanced" button, select the "TCP/IP" tab, then click "Renew DHCP Lease".
    5) In the folder /Library/Preferences (not <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences), move the folder SystemConfiguration onto the Desktop, then restart your computer. See if you can now make your AirPort connection work.
They may not help, but they'll only take a couple of minutes to try. Before you try these, note all your network settings, because the latter steps will destroy them.

  • Airport card 1.2.1 does not work with Ibook G3 with OSx.4.2

I just purchased a brand new airport express base station. It seems to be up and running on my G4Imac just fine as a server.
    For the client,
I have an ibook G3 and now have OSX.3.4 on it.
I installed my ancient Airport card- 1.2.1 into the Ibook.
I installed the new software from the new Airport base station.
I tried to install the old software from the Airport 1.2.1 card but dont have Classic- so would not install.
Now, the Ibook does not allow me to choose Airport in the Network Preferences section- does not seem to recognize there is a card installed. So, no way to connect to the base station.
    My questions:
1.can OS X..3.4 recognize the old Airport 1.2.1?
    2. Does the software from the new base station support the old card when used in the client?
    3. Do I need different software for the card in the iBook other then the base station software? ie, is there card software that needs to be installed, and if so what is it in system X?
Im trying to figure out if I have a hardward problem- ie the card or slot is not working- or s software problem.
    Can anyone help?

MacOS 10.3.x has all the software to use an Airport card already installed. All I would recommend you do is install the Airport 4.1 update provided at:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport41formacosx.html
The software that ships on the CD that came with the Airport Express is only used to configure an Airport Express. It doesn't provide any software updates for the MacOS itself, nor for the Airport card installed in that Mac.
First thing I suggest you do - run the System Profiler utility on your Mac. See if it identifies that an Airport card is installed. If it does not then recheck the installation of the card - ie pull out the card, then plug it in again and make sure it is fully seated into its socket. Remember to also attach the antenna cable to the card. If the System Profiler still fails to "see" the installed Airport card, then the card itself is likely defective.
[Side note: Airport 1.2.1 was the version of the Airport software required to provide software support for the card in ancient MacOS versions. Airport 1.2.1 is not actually installed on the Airport card itself, so if you install an original Airport card into another Mac it makes no difference what Airport version was installed on the Mac the card was pulled from.]

  • Suddenly getting UserNotFoundException: User Not Found: Could not load profile data from the database

Starting yesterday (I believe) we are suddenly receiving a "User not found" error when trying to view a user's profile page when clicking on their name (in search or elsewhere) via the url
    https://www.contoso.org/Person.aspx?accountname=contoso%255Cmyuserlogin
This is happening for all users. (but profiles exist and seem ok, and sync with AD is running fine) When looking in the logs I see the error  (full ULS log is later below)
Exception in LoadRequestedUserProfile: (Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.UserNotFoundException: User Not Found: Could not load profile data from the database.
The only clue of what MAY be going on is just before that I see the following two lines which came up after I changed the Database logging to Verbose:
    ConnectionString: 'Data Source=INSTANCE;Initial Catalog=UPAPROFILEDB;Integrated Security=True;Enlist=False;Pooling=True;Min Pool Size=0;Max Pool Size=100;Connect Timeout=15;Application Name=SharePoint[w3wp][3][UPAPROFILEDB]'    Partition:
    NULL ConnectionState: Closed ConnectionTimeout: 15
    SQL connection time: 0.0456 for Data Source=INSTANCE;Initial Catalog=UPAPROFILEDB;Integrated Security=True;Enlist=False;Pooling=True;Min Pool Size=0;Max Pool Size=100;Connect Timeout=15;Application Name=SharePoint[w3wp][3][HNet3_Svc_Prod_UPA_Profile]
If I am reading that correctly, does it mean the connection to the database is timing out instantly? I am able to use powershell to pull up profiles and print them to the screen while on the webservers. And it's only the one specific page that is not
    working.
What sort of tests or further debugging can I do for the error above?
We are on premise, SharePoint 2013 sp1, sql2012, server 2012, claims using the full SharePoint Profiile Sychronization against AD.  Farm has been running since last august. Last week the admin team did run windows update on all servers, I can't be sure
if it was broken for 5 days and no one noticed or if it broke yesterday.
    I already did the following:
Verified the profiles do exist in central admin.
I can still access their personal sites directly via
    https://www.contoso.org/personal/myuserlogin
I checked the ProfileDB database and made sure the service accounts for the UPA has dbowner, so does the farm account, and the web application pool has SPDataAccess.
Verified the AD sync account has proper rights in AD.
I reran a full synchronization which ran with no errors.
File systems on the webservers and appserver have plenty of free space.
    Rebooted every server in farm
I even checked the bin directory of the mysite webapplication, (since once I had a weird problem where access to bin was removed.) WSS_ADMIN_WPG, WSS_RESTRICTED_WPG_W4 have full control and WSS_WPG,IIS_IUSRS all have read and execute.
I opened powershell on the webserver I can indeed load profiles and print their values.

  • Airport Card suddenly not able to get an IP address

This happened all of a sudden... My wireless Internet connection was just fine, then it stopped working. It says it's connected to the wireless network, and that's true -- I verified it with the AP. But it won't get an IP address from the DHCP server. I tried clicking the "Renew DHCP Lease" button, but that doesn't do anything.
Now, I found something that does work. The following two commands entered in Terminal will fix the problem:
    sudo ipconfig set en1 BOOTP
    sudo ipconfig set en1 DHCP
But, if I restart my computer the problem returns.
    Any ideas?

Try opening the Network pane of System Preferences and changing the setting to BOOTP from DHCP, saving the change, and then changing it back. The changes made by those Terminal commands are lost the next time your Internet configuration changes, which is on startup, and often on sleep. If you can't get the setting to stick from System Preferences, you can create an application which will implement the change when opened by opening the Script Editor in your /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and typing or pasting in the following:
do shell script "ipconfig set en1 BOOTP" with administrator privileges password "yourpass"
do shell script "ipconfig set en1 DHCP" with administrator privileges password "yourpass"
do shell script "sudo -k" with administrator privileges --line added to help secure your system
Give this script your password and save it as an application. When run, it will execute the Terminal commands.

  • Safari 8 has suddenly become painfully slow (Not network related)

Since yesterday, Safari has stopped working properly. Nothing has changed in my computer set up or in the applications that I use. I’m running the latest update (Version 8.0.2 (10600.2.5)) on OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 (14B25). I have a 21" mid-2011 iMac with a 2.5GHz Quad-Core i5 and 16GB of RAM.
Here are the symptoms: Safari lags like a drunk cow. It takes about 9 bounces to open after which it hogs 2 GB of RAM according to Activity Monitor—that’s with two tabs open. Webpages take upwards of 30 seconds to open. Opening a contextual menu can take 10 seconds. Opening a new tab takes 2 seconds. Everything else on the system runs smooth as butter. I’m able to edit video, sling huge files around, edit huge Photoshop documents, run processor-intensive Logic projects and browse the web (in Chrome) at lightning speed. It would therefore stand to reason that this is not a network issue or a hardware issue.
I really want to keep using Safari as it’s been my main browser for years and old habits die hard, but this is just insane. I will leave my rant about the recent nosedive in Apple’s software quality for another post as I really would like to know if there is any hope or if I should sign away my privacy to Google and live in blissful ignorance.
I’ve tried all the tricks I know: emptying the cache, clearing the history, booting in Safe Mode. Nothing helps. This is also different, on the surface at least, from the DNS Cache bug that I dealt with immediately after upgrading to Yosemite. With that bug, the progress bar would stall at 20% for 30 seconds at a time but the rest of the interface remained snappy. This is different. It's like the whole browser got dunked in molasses.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Can't connect to internet via AirPort, but am getting full signal strength.

I can connect to the network, but can't connect to any website on the internet. My laptop PC is able to connect to internet & network wirelessly..... but it's just my MacBook that can't.
    Thanks & happy thanksgiving.

what ip address to you have in your laptop?
is it set to DHCP or did you manually enter in a ip address in your network preferences?

  • Airport card 802.11b sees other networks but NOT my network!

Hi. Having a very strange tech issue today...
I have a 1ghz ti-book that no longer wants to connect or even SEE my home network after waking up from sleep. Up until today there has never been an issue. My home network is distributed via a Netgear 802.11b and g wireless router. Again, I have never ever had any issue whatsoever connecting to my network. WEP is enabled. There are also 6 other computers all connecting to the same network via wireless too. No problems.
The crazy thing is I know the card is still functioning properly because I can still see all the other available networks around in my area. Even when I place the ti-book RIGHT NEXT to the antenna on the netgear router, it refuses to acknowledge that it is there. Meanwhile, it is showing all of my neighbors networks just fine!
The only variable in this equation is that the hinge of the display is damaged, such that it won't stay open "by itself". The display normally has to be propped up against something. The machine works fine otherwise, no issues. The weak bezel breaking is an issue that many ti-book owners faced and it has been broken for a LONG time with no performance issues at all. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the wire to the antenna for the Airport card goes up the side of the display and somehow the wire is damaged or frayed. I don't know if this is how the ti-book was designed....does anyone know? Specifically, if the wire for the airport card runs along inside the case of the display on the 15 inch 1ghz ti-book?
If it does not...and it seems like it is not hardware damage to the cable because how else could I still be getting other networks but not my own...then I am stumped as to how to trick my machine into recognizing the network again. I have done the basic things such as booting into single user mode and rebuilding my index, logging in as root and other users to see if the preferences were corrupt, and even installing a bunch of wifi wardriving apps to force recognition of my network and still nothing!
Again the machine is right next to the access point, so what is causing it to no longer "see" it? I also updated the firmware in the router and checked configurations but no changes have been made and all the other machines work fine. Also it has NEVER done this before so I don't know how to troubleshoot it!
*What would cause an airport card to reject the signal that it is configured to connect to? How should I go about getting it to see the network again...without reconfiguring the network which would mean having to update all the other machines, etc.* I have macstumbler and istumble running and they see PLENTY of networks except for the closest one. It is so bizarre. It was working when I went to bed and now today, no network. I have rebooted numerous times, etc.
please help!! i need some ideas!!!
    thanks!

a somewhat in depth search across the interwebs has lead me to the conclusion that this problem is also affecting Leopard users as well. (I am on old hardware and running the latest Tiger) To be honest, I can not remember if there was an Apple update right before this problem started to happen. However, it seems real enough and many users out there are having problems re-connecting to their home/work networks after waking from sleep.
    just to clarify:
Using a ti-book with normal airport card installed (b not g)
Connected to a Netgear wireless router (configured to manage both b and g traffic)
WEP 64bit encryption key is being used for network
No problems whatsoever until a few days ago
    what works:
unplugging the power to the Netgear router (cycling power)
    what doesn't work:
    waking from sleep
    restarting
manually entering network name and password
using 3rd party apps to find network
resetting/deleting Network location preferences and creating new one
    deleting AppleAirPort2.kext from /System/Library/Extensions/
using either Diagnostic or Assistant mode to reconnect from scratch
it should NOT be this difficult to solve a networking issue. what is going on here?
